I think it was really smart of the show not to tell us what the demon did to get punished. It’s easy to assume that he got what he deserved but we know that not all of Anya’s victims deserved it.

I completely understand Xanders fear about turning into his parents. Lots of people have the same fears. However, he needed to convey those feelings long before the wedding day. Remember his song with Anya in Once More With Feeling, he was having thoughts about it then. I assume he felt he could follow through regardless but the demon’s trick was the final straw.

Anya and Xander's daughter has ears that are not human shaped. This is why she says she knows Xander is not her father, because he's not. Anya at some point must have had an affair.

It's so heart breaking hearing Xander say it wasn't you I was hating, he made the right decision at the worst possible moment

This episode is the culmination of all Xanders arc. We know he had an abusive domestic environment but we never really see it. No wonder he is so messed up. But its a shame he let it get that far. He thought he was mature enough, he thought he could be his own person, but he just cant deal with his family yet and anya got caught on the crossfire

This episode is all kinds of bad writing!! Why the heck would Xander dump Anya for a fake future?! It literally makes no sense!! And if he just wanted to not get married but stay together, why didn't he just say so at the wedding?!

I hate this episode too. I completely understand Xander's fear of becoming like his parents. Point made.
But why is the idea of MARRIAGE so significant to Xander, a non-religious character, that engaging in that seems impossible? As if the prospect of an easy divorce a bit later down the line is not the safety net he would be leaning in to whenever his doubts arise.
I don't buy it. This development has always felt like misery for the sake of misery.

Exactly. This season, the writers were completely ignorant of what they established for their characters since season 1.
