  • On 15 October 1987 a storm was brewing in the Bay of Biscay which was set to wreak havoc across southern parts of the UK. It left 18 people dead and caused more than £1 billion of damage, sparking questions as to why there had been no warnings of what was to come.
In this video we investigate what happened on the 15th and 16th of October 1987 and the improvements that were made to help the public to prepare and take action during severe weather.

I remember that happening. I lived right near the seafront. Carnage everywhere. Mind you, being blown along the promenade on my mountain bike at what felt like 30 or 40mph the following morning, was great.

Spending cutbacks under the Thatcher régime forced the retirement of the only Ocean Weather Ship in Biscay, prior to the storm. The ship would have been excatly where the storm underwent explosive intensification, and the hard data would have been processed by the Met Office to provide a more accurate forecast and warnings. If anyone should point the blame, think of criminally inept government officials making false economies and shortsighted decisions that endangered the public.

What an idiotic comment. Basically your a Thatcher hater and you would blame this on her too if you could. Fact is , I work at the Met Office and have done for 23 years. Back in 87 there wasn't sufficient technology to predict such an event and seeing as it happened 300 years ago last time it wasn't expected.

My father was in this and it was brought up during a conversation about my school being cancelled due to the wind.

Well missing a storm is pretty dire, but the problem is the met office often get the ordinary forecast wrong just 24-hours before, so no pat on the back for them
