I had a ridge vent installed with new shingles after a large hail storm. Recently I hear rodent activity on the roof and in the attic. So far, trapped 5 rats. I have placed wire mesh over the plumbing vents and found several spots where the rodents chewed into the plastic of the ridge vent . My next process will be to shove copper mesh into the gaps and place 1/4 inch X 1/4 inch galvanized wire barrier between the vents and roofing 3 tab shingles . Maybe I will get some sleep once I succeed in stopping the intrusions.

While poor roof installation isn't impossible, it is more often due to animals causing damage. Attic ventilation is often one of the easiest targets. They'll see the holes in plastic vents and such as a weakness and claw, tear, or chew their way through to warmth or shelter.
Someone became a millionaire off this system based off someone's misapplication of a bridge vent if you put it on right you don't have to worry about no squirrels getting in your ridge
How do these fasteners not cause leaks later on? I am a handyman in CO and because of the large temp differentials from night to day, shade to sun, fasteners can easily work themselves out of wood.
If you are concerned about leakage I would recommend Solar Seal be used in the holes and on the screw threads. Drive the screw in, back it out, apply sealant to threads and drive screw back in. Then put a dab over all the screw heads for added assurance.
