I tried for days and when I explained to some guy about what I was doing, he let me kill him with the mongoose. I got my armor and I'll never forget that guy. I remember when my little brother and I found out about the Recon Armor, but that Bungie would only gift the armor to genuinely incredible players or RUclipsrs, he cried because it was an armor set we would never have. Then, when Halo 3: ODST (then called Halo 3: Recon) was announced, and we found out about how difficult the VidMaster Challenges would be, he cried again, because he believed we weren’t skilled enough to complete those challenges. I made it my mission to complete the VidMaster Challenges when ODST came out, and after many trials and tribulations, I finally completed the Endure Challenge and unlocked Recon on Sunday Night, January 3rd, 2010. I immediately rushed to my little brother’s room to tell him what I accomplished, and showed him my red Spartan with the Security Shoulders, the CQB Chest and the Recon Helmet...and all I got from him was an unenthusiastic “Okay, cool...” I guess the armor was mythical and amazing when it was impossible to obtain, but as soon as my supposedly unskilled noob ass was able to get Recon, it just lost all its charm?!?! Do you know how long I stayed up at night trying to clear the Deja Vu Challenge?!?!?!?!
343 actually gave it away when they took over the franchise. As the Bungie website was being converted to support Destiny, people would not have been able to obtain Recon anymore. Hence, the giveaway.
I’m 26 now I was a freshman in high school when I completed all these challenges with my dear friends. Watching this video brought my memory back I couldn’t tell you how I got recon but now I remember- I had no life 😂

But as you said, we were only the cool kids for a little bit before everyone got it lol. Remember recon "generators" programs that would give your computers viruses? Lol. OG Halo player. I remember the grind for recon. I did alot of runs on Annual, Deja Vu, and Endure to help people get recon. I got Halo 3 when i was 17 years old, just after the Vidmaster achievements became a thing. Great times
Endure was our last Vidmaster Challenge. We were all playing Sunday night before school. Attempt after attempt after attempt. We got to the last wave and some might say my buddies got careless. It was eventually just me and one last brute chieftain I had widdled the horde down to. The smack of the gravity hammer, the late night cries of three team mates, the powering down of the xbox 360, the lack of recon armor that night until 343 ravaged its purity.. that moment haunts my deepest memories. We never got together to try again.

Crazy to think it was around 11 years ago when this happened, but: We got down to a point where everyone was dead but me, end of a round somewhere within the third set. A hammer chieftain was walking around the walls in ONI Alpha Site. I jumped on top of one of the walls and he smashed his hammer, not killing but throwing me far off. I came back, swirled around him and hit him once in the back. I remember my heart was beating so hard. And I wanted to keep going and see what score we could reach. Everyone else said “screw that!” And left once the achievement popped. To be fair, it was a pick up group and not close friends, but yeah. We got it. Took around 6 hours or something like that.
I was never around during the og days to obtain Recon via Vidmaster or when 343i took over, Had an account lost it.. Made this one on Xbox and just going for all the matchmaking achievements on Halo 3 and it was awesome, only ones left are campaign, a few Lone Wolves and other things to do but considering I started playing on the 22nd of this month and have over half the achievements today really reflects how awesome this community is.

Well I couldn’t do it with 2 other people so I did it with one dude our 2 guest accounts hidden in the back of the map and we nailed it. When we got Recon I was soo happy lol.

I don't even know how I got it, but I think I was from playing 12+ hours in that playlist without quitting or lagging out. There was like, a quarter million people at any given moment that day. I think Recon unlocked for me around July 12th. I remember getting like 30 messages a day asking about how I got Recon, people being sketched out seeing me with Recon in matchmaking, and setting up photo ops with friends in custom games and forge...

Does anyone feel proud, as some third generation gamers, who got the recon through the vidmasters early on, you tried all Bungie competitions and if you weren't rooster teeth and or An Arby and chief creator or some god gamer, but as i grow old, i find it hard to explain what sort of dedication and online ODST coop to achieve. No one can take it from me, salut to the others.

ItsFurn They gave it to everyone for free in 2011 after the Bungie-343 transfer of the franchise. Every player got it free if they didn’t have it already.
