    Thanks for sharing. I do like all these videos highlighting both this product and the Argon8. I think that they are useful to appreciate what Modal Electronics is offering. A wildfire took down my house and my music studio. I am rebuilding and need to have a more minimalist set up than before. Both the Cobalt8 and the Argon8 are more capable than my modest modular set up was and far less expensive. What I get is that all the experience of people exploring modular synthesis has developed some very worthy synths that have learned from the modular world. Modal Electronics, as far as I understand, is finding that if you go completely digital that you can emulate a lot of modular boards without worrying about signal to noise ratio and incompatible voltages, and even pack more virtual circuits in less space. In any case, I am planning to put the Argon8 at the center of the studio and attach a Zoom 70CDR to add more effects to the output. I am still evaluating the Cobalt8 which seems to have a different emphasis and seems to emulate the analogue synths of the past very well. Until I get studio #2 up and running I am going to be learning from these videos.

    I’ve been on the fence watching all the new synths videos, both analog and digital. Every time I’m ready to make a purchase, Sonic State or Andertons posts a video and I’m consistently blown away. This video is no exception. So nice to hear from the good gentleman from Modal. I would love to jam with him! Quite and interesting implementation of technology in Cobalt. I agree that slightly out of whack oscillators is what have been missing in modern DSP and FPGA based synths. We are living in bountiful times! For the price point, and straight forward interface, there is nothing else that can pull my money away from Cobalt 8. Now, the 8 or spring for the 8X?

    • @chitalker
      @chitalker 2 года назад

      You'll make your best music with the synth you get. Meaning, just buy one, master it. Love it. Think when analog synths were all they had. No sincerely, you had to choose a feature that existed on one or another. Print a feature list of the cheapest virtual analog synth, then choose any analog from the 80's. Now, put an oscilloscope on both of them. I promise the only difference you'll see is that you have many more options to get creative. I also promise the only time you'll find you're better off with an analog, is when you need to make sounds that nobody wants to hear. Watch comparison vids. Screeching and grinds, yes, analog is able to make those flow into one another much better.

    This does sound great in a mostly Analog way. Bu I wish that Modal had implemented something like what Waldorf did with the Iridium, where you can choose whether each oscillator is Wavetable, Waveshape or other (it also has FM, Resonator and Granular). So you can get wavetable sounds like the Argon, shapable analog waves like the Cobalt and mix them as you desire. Admittedly, the Iridium is 2.5x the price of this, but if you've bought the Argon and Cobalt both, than you're already most of the way there.

    Can someone please help me with this question? In Jack’s beginners lessons on this channel he teaches you to use your thumb, index finger and middel finger when playing chords. And when I see him play he also plays like that. But when I look up other lessons and look other players they teach you to play chords with your thumb, middlefinger and pinkie. So that you can play suspended chords easier I guess? I’m not questioning his abilities or anything I love his playing and lessons. The thing is I’m learning through youtube and I don’t want to teach myself ‘bad habits’ which may be a problem later on. So I’m wondering if grabbing chords this way is like a ‘hack’ which makes it perhaps easier or that it is better to play it the more ‘traditional way? Also I know that there is no ‘wrong way’ to play anything. Like Mark Knopfler said: ‘I’m a guitar teachers worst nightmare. Thanks and love your videos Jack!

      Hey Nick, thanks so much for taking the time to watch the videos and to leave such a thoughtful comment my good man. You're spot on, it's a self taught hack on my part and if I could make "feel" right to me I would go with a more standard fingering like you eluded too. Dan and Mike who have been in playing on the channel recently both have pretty "unorthodox" fingering too and it made me think the that I think I must be drawn to players like that play in such way and generally I prefer there sound to a "classical" one (Gordon Mote is the same check him out!) If you're starting out then go with the one that makes sense to you on a gut level I'd say mate. Next time I get to film a lesson I'll see if I can explain how I navigate the "posher" chords you mentioned with my Cod fingers!! Sending all my best wishes my G

      @@jackduxbury1632 I think you're making alot of sense to alot of people with your lessons! It's clear, easy to comprehend and fun. My level of playing doesn't alow me to have any suggestions for a lesson 'cause I'm at the very beginning and need to learn everything. But what I would love to learn (and I think alot of people would like) is maybe a ultimate beginner lesson on blues. Maybe like 'thrill is gone' in bm or even 'Drive' by Joe Bonamassa which contain the chords: em am bm. Your lesson: piano lesson for guitar players also helps alot! Reason why I would like to learn this and why I try to learn piano in general is because I play guitar in a 'band' with my dad and some friends at home, we have a small setlist and I wanted to give the songs more depth and 'fullness' (if that is even a word?) by playing piano/keyboard. Anyway sorry for the rambling! Thanks Jack for even reading and replying you're awesome! Have a great weekend. Cheers Nick

    One of the best features of my Alesis Ion and Akai MINIAK's are that I can assign different patches and transposes to, be it a set, or even individual keys. (Eg, Akai MINIAK, I would assign four different drum sequences on the lowest c, C#, d, and D# keys, respectfully, as I would have the rest of the keyboard broken into sections that would have layered sequences with different custom patches, and just an octave with the lead for the song that I could play free style. The MINIAK also allowed key lock, so I could press one key, set a sequence with one sound. Press the key next to it, it plays another custom sequence with a different patch, 12 transposes below it's physical placement on the board, making it the same octave as the patch assigned on the keys next to it. Can this synth do that?

Which I find equally important.
      No single reviewer is my go to solo opinion on a piece of gear. They all serve their purpose.
      Jack = Excitement and cool patches

      Loopop = Most well thought out clearly spoken overviews and demonstrations
      Ricky Tinez = Sweet hidden features and vibes

    @16:40 if thats the limit of the "programmable arpeggiator".. then it does not have a programmable arpeggiator and that is very disappointing..
    what is being demonstrated here is simply no more than a transposable step sequencer.

    The interviewer is incredibly annoying. But even worse, he’s distracting from watching this beautiful Modal Cobalt.

      That mini form factor is quite handy and many people enjoy it, but since it's not your favorite, maybe they will stop making it...
