In fairness, Austin Powers actually makes MORE of an effort to explain the new love interest thing than 90% of all spy movies where it's just "Well obviously there's a new girl, do you know what genre you're watching?"

A running joke in my family is for someone to say "(insert) is driving me nuts" with a follow up from someone else "Short drive" which I said to a woman I worked with but she didn't get it till I explained it to her.
switching out elizabeth hurley was probably partly due to conflicting schedules, but yes it's also a spy movie thing. there has been a new "bond girl" for every james bond movie since the first, and it's usually an actress or model who is up and coming. heather graham was briefly very hot in hollywood after boogie nights - another movie you should definitely react to - and bringing her on was likely to capitalize on that.

@@richardb6260 The Bond franchise had to break their own old tread because of Austin Powers, and is greatly influenced by the Bourne series popularity at the time.

Jess Harvell is correct. Dispatching Elizabeth Hurley is basically a reference to the Bond series, where he has a new love interest every movie. There may also be an element of not expecting to make a sequel, so they made Hurley's character "the one" and then realized they had to walk that back if they were going to do another movie. In the beginning, Austin's watching "In Like Flint" which was the sequel to "Our Man Flint", one of many films of that era which parodied James Bond. I'm definitely sure parody/pastiche films like Austin Powers and Kingsman take some inspiration from those movies. In fact, Our Man Flint also has a villain named "Hans Gruber". You guys should watch Our Man Flint.
I looked up the Vanessa thing and it was a gag take on the one time Bond girl trope. This is what was on the wiki: Although Vanessa's reveal as a Fembot was a deliberately nonsensical twist, played for laughs as a reference to all of the James Bond series' one-time female leads, it has become the most contentious moment in the entire Austin Powers franchise, leaving many fans of the character in denial and anger over how she was written out.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights is one of the best dumb comedies of all time, and there is no way it'll get copyright-striked, since you've done other Mel Brooks movies before. Also, Hot Shots (but that's a different director).
The first Austin Powers movie feels like a love letter to the Connery era bond, while this is feels like it is more on the Roger Moore era bond which was much more absurd with movies like Moonraker and A View to a Kill.
Let me clear up the movie title confusion. Its a direct spin on the Roger Moore James Bond movie Called "The Spy Who Loved Me". Plus it's humour pays direct homage to Pink Panther Part 2.
You folks could probably spend the next few months just watching movies referenced in this movie alone if you wanted, but I thought I'd point out Rob Lowe getting hit in the head with the globe is a reference to "The Great Santini" starring Robert Duvall, sadly it is a pretty harsh watch about an abusive father and husband but I would recommend watching the basketball scene to get an idea of just how far Mike Myers was capable of taking such a harrowing scene of fatherly abuse to the light side of comedy, it's funny on it's own because of Rob Lowe's acting but put into the context of the original the dichotomy makes you realize what a ballsy move it was, considering audiences at the time were far more likely to get the reference. Comedy is magic .
Would highly recommend Young Frankenstien if you're looking for good spoof movies. Funny, touching, and all you need is a passing familiarity with the old horror classics. It wouldn't hurt to know the original story of Frankenstien too, since it's kind of a "sequal".
HOT SHOTS would be good for you guys to get into, as you've recently seen a few classic 80s action films. One of my favorites that never gets mentioned is the parody of LETHAL WEAPON and other buddy cop movies, NATIONAL LAMPOONS' LOADED WEAPON 1 (bear in mind there was no sequel, nor was there at any time any plans for one). The NAKED GUN movies were pretty funny too.
@@MrKeychange I loved her even in Anger Management (the Adam Sandler movie). I would have NOT been able to resist her there..... And of course there's Boogie Nights. Everyone who knows her knows about Boogie Nights. I just didn't like that movie that much, so I don't ever rewatch that. Not even her scene.... Oh, and of course there's The Hangover...
Galaxy Quest please! It stars some big actors, and more than a spoof, it is more like a love letter to Star Trek fans and Star Trek universe. And the best part? You don't really have to be a Star Trek fan to enjoy it and get the humor! It is considered by many to be a perfect film. Give it some thought. I would love to see your reaction!
The writing Vanessa out is a trope from James Bond movies of the love interests only lasting for 1 movie. She was never going to have a larger role in this movie, so scheduling was not an issue.
Bond movies that were parodied here include: The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. In addition to all the other references, there's an anti-reference to those as well. Both of those movies featured Jaws as the privileged Henchman. Jaws was an assassin with steel teeth played by Richard Kiel who was freaky big. Mini-me was physically the exact opposite, but they both attacked by biting. I never put that together before this very moment. Thanks scotch! The Bikini on the beach was taken from Dr. No. Doctor Evil is based on Bloefeld from the Connery years, (specifically You Only Live Twice, but also seen in On Her Majesty's Secret Service). Oh, and the scene where he used the woman as a shield was from a bond movie where he actually did that. She set him up, so she was evil, but he totally spun her into the line of fire. The Fembot thing wasn't a parody of any spy movie that I know of. It was probably more like she agreed to do one, then when the sequel became an option, she didn't want to do it again. There is a sort of thing in Bond movies where none of the women are in more than one movie. They nearly always end with him in bed with one and there's never a mention of her again. The one exception to this was a special case, where she was at least mentioned in other films. There were even references to her in the most recent Bond movie, No Time to Die (particularly in the music in a few key parts. In the 1980's there was a table top James Bond RPG. One of the mechanics of that game was the concept of Hero Points. You essentially earned one for critical rolls and could spend one to improve any other roll at any time. That's kind of what I think Mojo is. When you get to the next one, there are scenes of one of the actors as a much younger person. Those are all from a movie that was shot back then and re-used. Fun fact: In Like Flynn was a sort of parody of Bond movies done in the late 60's and starring Lee Marvin as a super cool. The main joke was that he had a cigarette lighter with 187* uses. 188 if you lit a cigarette with it. It was basically whatever the plot needed it to be. *I don't recall the exact number, it’s been 35 years since I the only time I saw it. Sorry. I could only manage about 442 words. I’ll make it up next time.
These movies are a mash up of previous spy spoof gags with "British Invasion" fashion mixed in. Myers' family is from Liverpool (Beatles birthplace), so this is kinda natural for him. If you watch the TV shows Get Smart (Not the movie version) & Rowan & Martin's Laugh In, you'll understand where he's getting the humor from. (The shoe throwing guy was a Get Smart character.) GS was Mel Brooks' first big project and Laugh-In launched the careers of Lily Tomlin and Goldie Hawn. It's really funny. If you search for the group Peter & Gordon, you'll literally see Austin Powers. 😁👍
What's really funny is that when Austin tells Nigel that Vanessa was a fembot, Nigel says, "Yes, sadly, we knew all along." Haha, what?? So how do you get the audience to accept something that doesn't really make sense? Have it make even less sense, lol.
I've always taken that as acknowledgement that Liz Hurley's acting is robotic but she got the role because for a brief time she was hot property due to her, admittedly incredible, looks. Her acting career faded away very quickly once it became obvious that she's more suited to modelling. "We knew it all along".
My most favorite spoof movie of all times is Loaded Weapon 1. Having seen Die Hard 1 is enough to get it's biggest banger. At least a bit Star Trek knowledge helps, but otherwise - LW1 is self-sufficient in making audience LOVL. The cast is top notch times 20! Other originals: Silence of the lambs, Basic Instinct, Lethal Weapon 3. PS: Spoof of "The Fugitive" is called Wrongfully Accused, it is not as hilarious as other Leslie Nielsen masterpieces, but still fun.
@@-M0LE Agreed. For me LW1 was the first time I noticed the persona of Samuel L Jackson (in previous movies he was just one of the actors to me). Main shock of LW1 is the overload on top actors. Who do deliver top acting as well.
4:12 "It's all staged, isn't it?" My sister was on Jerry Springer (twice). I can confirm that it was all staged, or at the least that they really didn't care if any of the guests were telling anything even approaching the truth so they long as they can maintain character.
Austin Powers draws from 1960’s spy movies. In particular the James Bond series. I would watch Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever. The In Like Flint movie is also an influence. Mike Meyer’s also thrown in the late 60’s swinging London styles.
First time seeing someone react to Austin Powers. I movie i saw in my teens when it first came out. Love seeing how much they enjoyed the silliness of this movie.
the base plot about a spy frozen and defrosted in "the present" was based on a a 60's British show Adam Adamant Lives!. "In 1902, Edwardian adventurer Adam Adamant is frozen alive in a block of ice by his arch-nemesis, the Face. In 1966"
So great watching you two enjoy these. Made me happy when I saw this was posted. As to getting A list stars, it's hard to underestimate how much of a cultural impact these movies were. They were huge, enormous pop culture touchstones. Everybody from teenage boys to middle-aged wine moms were quoting parts of these movies. I'm not sure if there is a cultural equivalent today, because comic book action movies have all but pushed out pure comedy from top billing spots, but there used to be a time when that was not the case. I second/third/whatever the Top Secret recommendation, and I also hope you do the third Austin Powers as well.
George; your thumbnail skills are legendary. Don’t take it personally if the CineBinge cosplay / calendar only uses this Simone image for May. Simone..oh, behave!
I watched all the James Bond movies growing up, I remember watching reruns of The Saint that came on at like 1:30 at night. This movie made fun of all that shit. I guess the two really big influences are Moonraker which is Bond in space and On Her Majesty's Secret Service where Bond spoiler below gets married and his wife is killed in the very next scene.
I wouldn't say you'd have to watch them for references that you might have missed, but the second movie, "The Spy Who Shagged Me", and the third movie, "Goldmember", are spoofs on James Bond movies, "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977) and "Goldfinger" (1964). Fitting that "Goldmember" is the third because "Goldfinger" was the third Bond film.
One of my favorite reaction channels. Can't wait for you two to watch Goldmember! (Fun Fact, if you watch closely, you can see Beyonce getting lost in the first dancing number she takes part in, and gets back in sync by looking at what the other 2 dancers are doing)
Great reaction! I have a lot of nostalgia for this one! This was an absolutely huge movie in the Summer of 1999 (when I was 17 and about to enter my last year of school so you know a particularly big nostalgic time for me generally.) It actually outgrossed 'Toy Story 2' and 'The Matrix' at the US box office, not to mention the actual canon James Bond film of 1999, 'The World Is Not Enough' (though 'The World Is Not Enough' was a bigger hit internationally.) I did feel bad about Vanessa though. I really liked her in the first movie. :(
This movie sure is cause for lots of giggles and Simone and George both have adorable giggles! It's so funny, when George was questioning some of the logic early on, I thought, "bring on Basil Exposition!"

Let me clear up the movie title confusion. Its a direct spin on the Roger Moore James Bond movie Called "The Spy Who Loved Me". Plus it's humour pays direct homage to Pink Panther Part 2.
you guys gotta watch austin powers goldmember
I never saw The Great Santini as an abusive father. Overbearing and demanding, yes...but...
Would highly recommend Young Frankenstien if you're looking for good spoof movies. Funny, touching, and all you need is a passing familiarity with the old horror classics. It wouldn't hurt to know the original story of Frankenstien too, since it's kind of a "sequal".
Spies like us is a total classic!
One of my favorite sequels in the franchise, cool reaction as always Simone & George, you both take care and have a great weekend
I think it's the best movie in the series
Heather Graham just reminded me of something: Please watch Bowfinger!!!
Mike Myers' _So I Married An Axe Murderer_ 🪓 ❤️ - an essential '90s classic for the list. You'd love it.
Woman. Woah man. Whoooooooaaaaah man.
@@Psilocybin77 this is voice i use to bark orders at my kids to this day...
@@Psilocybin77 "Look at the size of that boys heed... looks like sputnik".
"HEED, MOVE!"
"We have a piper down"
It's a virtual planetoid!
The Tent scene is pure gold
"I suggest you don't worry about all of that and just enjoy yourself. And that goes for you all."
Yes, I love this one even more than part 1.
I had SUUUUUUUUUCH a crush on Heather Graham......
Same!!
Who didn't? She's such a knockout and really smart.
It is rather unmatched.
Since you've watched the fugitive you can now watch " wrongfully accused" , with Leslie Nilsen.
I really didn't think much of that movie, not a fan of Spy Hard either, but another Leslie Nielsen comedy I do love is Repossessed.
A customer came in and I happened to pause @0:06 with the crossed eyes and my heart almost exploded lol
Rob Lowe's impression of Robert Wagner just cracks me up!
Where's Goldmember...you need to watch it now...
It's so nice and a little surreal watching you guys laugh at the jokes that had me keeling over when I was 10 lmao
One thing that always cracks me up is it's the same extra that sees them doing the shadow stuff as the last movie.
I love it when Elis Costello sings in the street
How ya not do goldmember? You've watched these two, ya gotta finish the trilogy.
That coffee joke *"It's a bit nutty"* was a great joke.
You guys should watch Top Secret. It’s Airplane but for spy films.
The ball being thrown to the head and being taunted to cry is from the movie The Great Santini.
17:45 easily one of the best, and most sincere reactions ever "That's not a good joke."
4:12 "It's all staged, isn't it?"
My sister was on Jerry Springer (twice). I can confirm that it was all staged, or at the least that they really didn't care if any of the guests were telling anything even approaching the truth so they long as they can maintain character.
I think there was an actual acting college near their set.
She did answer the question. “ how’d you get into those panes?” “You can start by getting me a drink”.
First time seeing someone react to Austin Powers. I movie i saw in my teens when it first came out. Love seeing how much they enjoyed the silliness of this movie.
Piling on to the TOP SECRET love. You'll both really like that one, and Val Kilmer does all his own singing!
So glad this trilogy is coming to your channel. The third movie is something else as well. A real trip.
Wait, where's the third film, Goldmember? :O You guys need to watch it asap!
Hope to see your reaction/review of Goldmember too!
Did you guys not do Goldmember yet? I could have sworn you had. If not, you gotta!
After you watch Goldmember, I highly recommend Wayne's World 1 & 2 if you guys haven't seen them. Mike Myers best comedies in my opinion.
I think 'In Like Flint' and 'Our Man Flint' starring James Coburn is a must.
Two of my favorites!
Everything in this movie is absurd.
And I live every second of it. 🤣 🤣
the base plot about a spy frozen and defrosted in "the present" was based on a a 60's British show Adam Adamant Lives!.
I died when you clarify the description of Family jewels
George; your thumbnail skills are legendary. Don’t take it personally if the CineBinge cosplay / calendar only uses this Simone image for May. Simone..oh, behave!
Please watch "The Neverending Story"!
11:39 - YES! Mike Myers also plays Dr. Evil, too! XD
I watched all the James Bond movies growing up, I remember watching reruns of The Saint that came on at like 1:30 at night. This movie made fun of all that shit. I guess the two really big influences are Moonraker which is Bond in space and On Her Majesty's Secret Service where Bond spoiler below
gets married and his wife is killed in the very next scene.
Still hoping for the Goldmember reaction
I think you both would love This is Spinal Tap, no pre watching required.
Are you guys going to finish the Austin powers movies?
Mike Meyers first did this Scottish accent in So I Married and Axe Murderer.
Gotta say, yall win the thumbnail game, by a mile they are all so well done.
The best guess is that she got switched during the time of capture while raiding Dr. Evil's layer in the first movie.
One of my favorite reaction channels. Can't wait for you two to watch Goldmember! (Fun Fact, if you watch closely, you can see Beyonce getting lost in the first dancing number she takes part in, and gets back in sync by looking at what the other 2 dancers are doing)
The little lunch-time dance scene is oddly wholesome.
8:45 to answer George's question, remember when he got the cart stuck in the base in the first one
Great reaction! I have a lot of nostalgia for this one! This was an absolutely huge movie in the Summer of 1999 (when I was 17 and about to enter my last year of school so you know a particularly big nostalgic time for me generally.) It actually outgrossed 'Toy Story 2' and 'The Matrix' at the US box office, not to mention the actual canon James Bond film of 1999, 'The World Is Not Enough' (though 'The World Is Not Enough' was a bigger hit internationally.)
I did feel bad about Vanessa though. I really liked her in the first movie. :(
Mojo was created Jim Morrison lead singer of the Doors, part of the song called Mr Mojo Risiin’ which is his full name rearranged.
This movie sure is cause for lots of giggles and Simone and George both have adorable giggles!
It's so funny, when George was questioning some of the logic early on, I thought, "bring on Basil Exposition!"
In the movie itself they mention In Like Flint. That is both one of the inspirations for this movie and arguably a spoof already.
If you like austin powers you NEED to watch classic Bond highlights include
Goldfinger
You only live twice
On your Majesty's secret service
The spy who loved me
Moonraker
The living daylights
A license to kill
GoldenEye
And die another day (for all the wrong reasons)
