He's is an influencer, he's summing up every option thats new like all the others what canon wants people to say and sum up. I already saw the in camera noise reduction, still beter to do afterwards, only usefull when you need JPG and no editing for example. The upscaling can cause artifacts like aliasing, which I saw on feathers of a bird, so better buy a R5ii and crop 50% and you still have 22MP, while the R1 leaves you with 12MP

R3 user here. The R3 has had Register People to Prioritize for over a year. You can register up to 10 and give each a priority. I'm a Surfing sports photographer. I'm using two R3's. I'm not blown away, it seems to be an R3 upgrade. The preshoot buffer could be added to the R3, and fixed at 0.5 seconds needs to be adjustable. I don't really want another 20 images every time I hit the shutter. The only saving grace I can see of it is the AF. I'll wait until I see more real live stories.

Tip for Kym regarding panning subjects that are emerging from behind an obstacle... Use your ears to follow the sound of the car/bike and then pan with the sound (not always possible in extremely noisy environments, F1 may be such an environment). Prior to shooting, prefocus to the part of the track where the car/bike will be emerging (i.e. roughly where you want to shoot it). Then when panning with the sound, don't use back button autofocus while panning with the sound until the car/bike emerges, but shoot frames from just before it emerges.
A similar situation occurs at turn 9 at Phillip Island (shooting from the inside of this left hand corner) as the cars/bikes emerge from behind an embankment and Marshall station and crest the hill before diving down into turn 10. You can pan with the sound of the vehicle approaching, start shooting frames just as they emerge and then engage autofocus as they come into view. Hope that helps! Cheers, Ross

I just kind of feel like there was a change of plan at some point. The way it is now, there's no space in the line-up for an updated R3, because that's basically what the R1 is.
In terms of concept and target audience, this is basically identical to the R3. Maybe the R1 was supposed to get a global shutter, but Canon either couldn't make it work or wasn't happy with the compromises that come with it .

Damn. I loved that the R3 can use an SD card.
My work is purchasing a R1 for each photographer to go with our R3. Currently, we're on an R32 and a 1Dxiii which means two sets of lenses.
Glad they fixed the loose hotshoe cover though.
Not sure how often 40fps will benefit me over 30fps but I'll take it.
The problem with the pre-recorded frames example you had is that you still need to be panning with the car as it comes into frame or it'll be a blurry mess. But I'm sure it'll be useful for some things. I shoot military stuff. So getting a shot of a tank or artillery firing should become much easier with pre-recorded frames.
Eye forcusing never worked in the R3 for me. The point always seems to be a tiny bit off where I'm looking and I find my eye chasing/following that point around the frame.
Upsacaling has always been a bit of a letdown for me. But if it's built in to the camera and made specifically for shots from that sensor, maybe it'll be worthwhile.

I suspect it will be a while before you get your hands on it. I think Canon were pressured into an early announcement, with limited hands on for the photography press. Many folks were saying the firmware was very early, and buggy at times.
Either Canon got wind of some upcoming Sony announcement, or because the release is delayed until after the Olympics, they were worried about possible defections to Nikon/Sony?
Either way, to me, the R1 seems more like an R3 mk2. Or probably more likely, the R3 was the original R1, but was already outclassed before launch so it was rebranded down to the R3?
That said, despite all the cynicism above, looks a good camera, and will be a good upgrade for those who in the target audience for this type of camera.

I went from the 7Dii to the R6, and don’t regret it for a second. I was worried that spreading the same number of pixels across a full frame would lose me detail, but it’s more than compensated for by the quality of those pixels; partly because the AF is just that much better, but also I can go a lot less cautious with the ISO.

But, for others many think the R5 II is the true flagship over the R1. 26MB may be enough for sports, but not for wildlife for example and certainly not for birds. So, the narrative out there is the R1 is more like a R3 II. Given the AF is pretty much the same perhaps with a very slight edge to the R1, personally I would pick the R5 II instead, but since I already have the R5 I don't think there is enough for me to upgrade to. To be honest, had Canon put the R5 II specs into the R1 unigrip body with dual CFexpress Type B card slots, I think a lot of R5 shooters would be happy to upgrade to that.

Thats the thing though, the 1 series cameras throughout canon's history have always been targeted towards press photographers and sports photographers who need that fast readout and turnaround speed. That has always been the focus of their 'flagship' models since the DSLR days. The 5 series has always been a higher MP camera than their 1 series to keep things fast. When you need to get your photos published mins to an hour after the action happens, and sometimes even from locations with poor data coverage like warzones etc, a 45MB image just slows everything down.

As with a few other people, I do feel that this is the R3mk2 more than anything. I am not suggesting that this is a bad thing, and I can understand a professional sports photographer upgrading from the R3 to the R1.
Does it feel like a flagship camera? Sort of. Nikon and Canon have gone down very different routes, with Nikon having 45mp in their Z9. The Z9 doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the R1, but the sensor makes it more flexible for multiple forms of photography, including, sports, journalism, portraiture, landscapes and product. The R1 feels very focused on sports, journalism and documentary.
Also, do I want AI to upscale my photos?

I could never got the eye tracker/focus to work well with my eye on the R3 (sold it and got Z9) so I hope it’s better on the R1. I probably won’t be getting one due to 24mp, wished Canon could at least pull a 36mp. I know 24mp is enough for journalist and sport like F1 but it’s limited for wildlife photography as you need to crop in tight for animals/birds. But at $7K I will have to pass on it since I’m not a pro and the camera won’t pay for itself. But to those who will be getting one, congratulations and I’m sure it will be a good camera (R3 Mk2?).

Regarding the Canon viewfinder rubber eyecups [EOS 1D X Mark III and my EOS 7D = £12. EOS R3 = £70. Yes, Canon do seem to have ripping-off down to a fine art: something that they started with Pro/semi-Pro camera batteries].
At Silverstone, before they built the new 'Wing' Media Centre, the Photographer's Centre was at Copse.
Between Copse and the Becketts Complex was a roadway where they parked the lorries that transported the F1 TV containers.
Over the GP-weekend, all along this road would steadily become carpeted with broken Canon eyecups as more and more of them became dislodged...
The trick to not lose them so easily is to get some Blu-Tack: the 'chewing gum-like' substance used to fix posters to walls. Roll out a 3cm piece of it out to about the thickness of a drinking straw. Put it like a 'halo' - about 5mm away - around the viewfinder behind where the eyecup fits and gently sliiiiide the eyecup into place. It will now be much more secure than before!

You don’t need to be paying £70 for an eyecup. They’re US$19 out of B&H Photo.

I can tell you are a fan of Canon Cameras. Is there something wrong with favouring a Camera brand? However I think there are some out there who are shooting off their opinions just to promote their content but their opinions have very little practical value. They are all ready on to the R3 Mk II or the R1X or whatever imaginary camera they are dreaming up. The R1 will seriously satisfy REAL CAMERA users. My own view is that Canon has always had what Professional photographers want in their Flagship Camera. 1. Reliability, 2. Ease of Use. From the days of the F1 Series the EOS-1 Series, the EOS-1DX Series there is a common theme Hardened for field use not necessarily the most feature rich. Sometimes other Lines such as the A-Series had more advanced features that appealed to Amateurs (Program, Aperture Priority etc.) EOS-3 Eye Focus, EOS-7NE. The EOS-R3 is just Canon following their method of appealing to their user base. It is not surprising that Canon chose a 24MP Sensor for Professional use, if you cannot get an excellent image from that you are not even a good amateur photographer. The 5-series has always been their high Mega-pixel line aimed at a different user base. Anyhow most people are highly negatively opinionated about the R1 and it is not available as yet to even have a production unit in their hands. For me it would be great to have one but I am also happy with what I am able to achieve for my needs with my 18MP camera. Not that I can afford Canon's Flagship, for those that can afford it I am sure they will be satisfied with it.

I shoot sports, so I don't care about the comparison between the R3, which I currently use, and the new R1. The R3 is a true beast. Some people say they will leave Canon and move over to Sony or Nikon. To those people I say see you later. I'm 100% on board with Canon.

I have used Nikon for 20+ years, and it is the system that I feel most at home with. While I don't regret buying into those other systems (they made sense when I was buying them). I am sure one day, I will return to Nikon.

I’m not a professional so I suspect my comments here will be dismissed out of hand but here goes regardless.
Is this the flagship camera we’ve all been waiting for? I’d say it’s more akin to an R3 MK II. We’ve waited four years for a 24 MP camera?
It wasn’t that long ago and people were losing their mind about how good the R3 AF performed. Suddenly we have a new body that humiliates the R3? Call me skeptical.
I’ve no doubt it’s a terrific piece of tech but it seems a little underwhelming to me for a flagship camera in 2024.
Improvements these days are incremental. Will we see massive jumps ahead like we did from the 5D to the 5D MKII? I’m not sure.

  • @natureredux1957

The R1 is not the R3ii. In fact, Canon USA has already stated the R3 line will continue. In all likelihood, it will be the R3ii that gets a Global Shutter First, way before we see one in a R1. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR Camera (Body Only) still costs NEW, more then the latest and Greatest mirrorless Flagship R1 some several years later. So all these Folks blanking on a Camera in a price Range they would never buy in the first place, Regardless of Brand, basically have nothing else to do but complain.
