Thank Kym. Using all your info for Feature Film "Men of Steel", Budget looks like $200,000,000 and we will not get to it until 2026 or 2027. Keep on shooting. Your insight is priceless.
I use Eye Control on my R3 all the time. It's super handy, but I know some folks can't get it to work well. But so many people crap on it and don't understand it at all. Glad you are not harping on the 24MP. I use my R3 for covers of magazines over the R5 because the files look better. Canon should release a S version of this though for folks who want more MP. A lot want something like the Z9. Maybe the R3 m2 has 45mp, just an idea.
I'd love that pre-capture. The amount of incidents I've missed over the last few seasons. And the multi function buttons, with the set up I use, if I'm just on one body, it's a pain in the arse on a sunny day if I'm on a pitlane and I've got to turn and shoot into a dark garage to catch a driver. Seeing as though I've not drunk for years I reckon I could sell a kidney if the going rate covers the price! By coincidence I did post a vid on my own channel yesterday about working as a Touring Car (BTCC/TCR) photographer using the 90d for the last few years (and the couple of million photos I've banged out with them) never considered upgrading until now!
Back in the day, I enjoyed shooting with Canon 5D Mark II. They were much simpler, but got the job done. It's more about the Glass for me and Canon has some good ones. The problem with the programmable buttons is, in a hurry, you'll end up forgetting what button was set for what function. People are so ignorant when it comes to how big the files must be. It was the same way 20 years ago. My first digital camera was 2 megapixels and I still love going back and looking at those images.
Love the Camera/ photography videos Kym! I would enjoy a follow up, after the rest of your time shooting with the R1 if there are more things worth mentioning.
Great video Kym! But I've watched just about every R1 video that exists and I haven't seen any images captured with the R1 that I couldn't capture with my R3.
Kym 1) you should be Canon Ambassador 2) you are so much more professional than the Petapixel or Tony/Chelsea of this world - it is incredible 3) we love your positive spirit, starting with your choice of words - maybe the Aussie touch 4) you consolidate my intention of buying the R1, just after one or two firmware updates. Thank you for everything! Canon has done incredibly well this year and released the best products in their price segments: R5II, R1 but also C400 and C80. What an amazing brand!
Isn't the light on the bottom left to indicate when the LAN is sending data like a networking switch if you've tethered it to use a network? Great video especially the tip about reducing the menu to your preferred choices.
Great review! So many hidden gems in the customisation menu I didn’t know about! Would be curious to hear your thoughts on the R5 mark II if you get to try it out. They’ve added pre continuous shooting on it too and it’s really enjoyable to use for action and wildlife photography. Autofocus is also greatly improved. Can imagine you’d be able to shoot F1 with it too but much larger files unlike the R1. I think it’s Canon’s best camera on the market.
Hi Kym. Love your videos. Can I ask if you will be able to recommend a setup for someone pretty new to racing photography. I will love to be able to shoot some panned shots in the near future.
05:00 The knurl finished diopter dial such as the ones in Nikon's Z series is better IMO. The half-hidden wheels on Canon bodies are not easy. The dexterity with those wheels is a little limited. The wheels get stuck and become immovable in time. I had to have them serviced at the service centre twice. The hold on diopter dials (like the ones on Nikon Zs) is better and it makes handling easier. Perhaps Canon wants the ergonomics of certain lines to be well-contained instead of projecting out.
Thanks for your review, pleased you got your hands on one. Good to get a real world use review. You need 20 faces to remember at least, get Canon told 😂.
Hi Kym, Have you already replaced your two R3s with the R1? Today I dropped off two Canon EOS R3s at my dealer and took two Canon EOS R1s with me. The transfer of the settings partially worked, but now I have to get to grips with the new ones... perhaps (again) with professional tips from your everyday work.
R3 also has face focus registration. Did you ever use it? Using precapture on R5ii locks out exposure adjustments. Example: While shutter button is half depressed and precapture is active camera will not accept thumbwheel exposure offset inputs. Does R1 have this same annoying behavior?
Kim 2 things, 1 a mere curiosity. What's the tape about over the Canon logo on the camera? is that a directive from Formula one? I'm guessing something to do with the TV side of things? And my understanding is that "LAN" stands for Local Area Network, so that being right beside the little light I'm assuming may potentially have something to do with the wifi of the camera perhaps?
What do you do with the old camera’s after you get new ones? Do you sell them second hand, keep them for if anything happens with the new camera’s or do something else with the camera’s?
they shoot many, so many. If they change the camera, the censor can die everytime. Shooting full speed with digital camera can make censor can die faster, i don't know, maybe 500k shoot 1M shoot.
Locking diopter, an essential and simple thing, is this really a first for Canon. Something Fuji have done for years, not that I could shoot F1 easily on my GFX!
Good afternoon. It would be interesting to see in detail how focusing with a matrix works. Isn't the focus dancing like on r3? When you focus on a point on the face, and the face turns out to be in focus, but along the edge of sharpness, while the "points" of sharpness themselves walk across the field of the picture (analogous to the front of focus on dslr cameras and not officially recognized canon problem) . And the second point is whether canon has not been taught to focus the r1 on less contrasting objects and lines... This is a pain for the r3, especially on telephoto lenses.
2:01 - *VOICE NOTES* - One of my biggest gripes with Canon is that the RATE button and Voice Notes are only recorded to ONE CARD, even when set to redundant recording. It doesn't record to both cards, and I can't understand why. I've had this issue with the 5D Mk3, 5D Mk4, R5, and R3. I really hope they fix it in the R1, especially since both card slots are the same type on the R1. It will be more difficult to know which one of the two identical (supposedly redundant) cards contains the RATE and voice notes.
@@KymIllman - I have my cameras set up to record redundantly to both cards, and this is one of my top gripes. Why can't the *RATE* and *Voice Memo* be written to both cards? It seems like an easy fix.
Idk about that. FW 1.7.1 dropped in march 2024. Numerous fixes and updates in that. Did it deliver a bunch of new features that haven't even been fully released for this new camera? No, but how can it be said they've forgotten about a camera when there were 5ish FW releases in 2023? I personally would never buy a camera based on the possibility of future feature updates. If it doesnt provide value at the price at the time of buying then i wouldnt buy it. If i did buy it id be happy with updates but cant blame Canon if they dont make it a new camera 2-3 years later via fw.
The R3 has gotten some absurdly good firmware updates so I'm not sure what that means. They added in the extended recording with higher heat temperature tolerance, face recognition (the 10 faces you can submit in camera and have the camera prioritize them) and they added in 1080p 240fps through a firmware update with that "195 fps" mode. The R3 got a ton of love from Canon.
Kym not sure if you are still using the android wifi FTP setup, can you see how the performance is with the new 6Ghz Wifi 6E? That might be much faster but need a newer hotspot. Also should give you less congestion when near grandstands.
i have a sad new for you, R1 wifi 6E work on 6.0 GHz band Frequency: 5955 to 7095 MH, many coutry only Adopted 5945-6425 MHz and Considering 6425-7125 MHz. Sure you need know the setup up modern to legit everything.
thanks for sharing. but i am nikon shooter all my life expect when i went euro in 1991 had disposable camera kodak camera. or when we owned polaroid camera where made photo for you both could not control camera. i love learning about other brands. i like to learn about canon and sony. since camera buddy's do not use social media for camera stuff or facebook like pages for that stuff too.
It is essential to have two cameras. In the paddock drivers will walk towards you from a long distance, so I will start with a 100-300 mm and as the driver gets closer quickly switch to the wide.
As good as this camera is I just think outside of the ruggedness it and illuminated buttons and that kind of thing it doesn't bring anything new or impressive in comparison with the sony a1 for example that is a 3 year old camera. Yes it has a weird eye follow AF mode but I would never use it. And the sony a9 iii completely destroys it with its global shutter in terms of speed and the pre buffer mode. it is the best choice probably if you want to shoot sports or wildlife strictly with a canon setup though, but frankly if was buying into a system I would choose sony for the 300mm f2.8 lens alone that is just 1.5kg and outclasses anything Canon or Nikon have.
@@KymIllman thanks! I recently got a D850 and I’m looking to start doing motorsports stuff after starting as a landscape/wildlife photographer a few years ago
@@KymIllman not an issue jus checking if lightroom and other softwares can now open the files. I heard some youtuber saying the files are too clean but needs to check the raw files once the softwares can open them
I am actually quite happy that they didn't overdo the pixel size. As in, if your a news photographer. You don't wanna wait 10 minutes for 1 file to be send. You wanna send 100's of files to the news room and then go on shooting. So it being just the amount it is, is fine for me. Quite happy they decided that. I also never got why people wanna have a 50 megapixel or more picture to begin with. Just what it is now is fine. We do not need to forget that all that space that is needed and the stuff that is needed to process this all, will cost a huge load of money to. And nowadays earning enough with news and events photography is already a bit harsh with so much competition and media giving us less and less everyday.
Many of the features he pointed out are not new. For example the R3 has face priority as well. Screen info settings is not new. And release priority is not new as well.
Looks a lot like some optical sensor. In official canon photos you can see a circular (most likely) lens inside the white box. Very similar to what you find under laser mice. What light it captures and whether it also sends light to measure something is hard to tell without opening the camera body. As Canon touch screens don't work with most gloves, it could in theory be a "mouse" that you can use to interact how you normally would with the touchscreen.
very nice job with the video. Quick note, the screens are actually different from the R3 to the R1, in terms of size it's the same, but the resolution has been cut in half.

That’s interesting, I never use the writ e button and I only use the voice note to send pictures to an editor.
@@KymIllman - I have my cameras set up to record redundantly to both cards, and this is one of my top gripes.
Why can't the *RATE* and *Voice Memo* be written to both cards? It seems like an easy fix.
The face recognition was added to the R3, but I never really got it to work, does it work well with the R1.
Merci pour votre excellent retour...il ne me reste plus qu'à économiser, Canon ne voudra pas m'en donner un ;)
It would be nice for canon to show some love to the R3 with some firmware updates. Canon have forgotten about the R3,
which is such a shame.
Go to the Canon website and check you have the latest firmware update. Sounds like you haven't.
@@kpopfanphotos oh, they test many in R3 before making them better in R1.
Kym not sure if you are still using the android wifi FTP setup, can you see how the performance is with the new 6Ghz Wifi 6E? That might be much faster but need a newer hotspot. Also should give you less congestion when near grandstands.
i have a sad new for you, R1 wifi 6E work on 6.0 GHz band Frequency: 5955 to 7095 MH, many coutry only
Adopted 5945-6425 MHz and Considering 6425-7125 MHz. Sure you need know the setup up modern to legit everything.
I wish I could photograph these things to.
How is it in low light?
"Don't put that bit in."
Lol
thanks for sharing. but i am nikon shooter all my life expect when i went euro in 1991 had disposable camera kodak camera. or when we owned polaroid camera where made photo for you both could not control camera. i love learning about other brands. i like to learn about canon and sony. since camera buddy's do not use social media for camera stuff or facebook like pages for that stuff too.
Yo Kym curious, how did you learn so much about photography?? Great video -from an audio nerd
By taking a lot of photos
@@KymIllman 🙂
Do yr lenses Kym, camera is one thing… glass is everything! 😊
See my video about my kit that I did at the start of the season for that
Now you have to programme 2 new units in November… unless you can export the settings from your test unit?
I forgot to export them anyway so I will not be transferring them
It ain’t Sony no bologna….. Try an A1. You won’t look back….. Love your videos…..
I recall buying a Canon A-1 in 1982 when I worked in Saudi Arabia. More money than sense back then🤣
Im curious about why you use 2 cameras simultaneously. Is it just to save time changing lenses or are ther other reasons for that?
Kym can you get a adapter for EF and Efs lens?
Yes
What ring do you use on the r3 eye cover?
Some black rubber band that Canon USA gave me in Vegas last year
No BLACKOUT. :)
I still have my Canon F1 and assorted lenses.
Which lens is mounted - any idea?
50mm
Hey Kym! I am an aspiring photographer and I would love if you could give me advice on how I can advance in motorsports photography! Thanks! I
I suggest you watch my photography videos on the channel. There are a number of them.
@@KymIllman thanks! I recently got a D850 and I’m looking to start doing motorsports stuff after starting as a landscape/wildlife photographer a few years ago
They've come a long way from the old Canon AE1 I had.
So many settings, didn't they made it way to complicated?
Did you manage to open the raw files ?
Yes. Is that an issue?
@@KymIllman not an issue jus checking if lightroom and other softwares can now open the files. I heard some youtuber saying the files are too clean but needs to check the raw files once the softwares can open them
@@The_Idea_of_Dream_Vision both lightroom and capture one now support both R1 and R5 mark II
is this the best camera for astrophotography?
Yesss
A step up from a wooden box and flash powder
Many of the features he pointed out are not new. For example the R3 has face priority as well. Screen info settings is not new. And release priority is not new as well.
Oh you mean the R3 mark ii?!
Pricy, but the first EOS-1D (4 mp!) that I bought would be ten grand, USD, in today's dollars.
it's incredible camera... i am more like nikon boy.. but incredible camera
That 'light' on the back of the camera looks more like a sensor.
Light sensor for the display screen auto brightness probably?
Fingerprint sensor for image authentication? Used in medical/ legal work.
Nice
