The hooter was more unique to me. It sounded more muscular and no- nonsense like an articulated married to a tug boat. It was on par with the Reading and Northern whistle that sounded like a Squatch screaming in the forest
This whistle (southern longbell 3 chime) suits this locomotive MUCH more. To me the hooter sounds wimpy and i dont really like hooters, and for a locomotive of this size the long bell just fits it so much better
I didn't even know they'd done this until I read about in Railfan magazine last week. Such a great job with putting the temporary C&O marking back on 1309. I saw her in the B&O museum's parking lot in the 90s, never thinking she'd run again
The 1309 is a powerhouse, considering that it is a 2-6-6-6. Though it is not an "Allegany" like the locomotive that is on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit.
@@danielfoster3642 I believe the 1309 is a 2-6-6-2 “H6” mallet, the 2-6-6-6 is the “H8” otherwise known as Alleghenies or Blue Ridges depending on which railroad
Always loves the look of the front of C and O steam locomotives. They just look powerful. Its hard to explain. And i never noticed until now why it was a slower locomotive until now. Its. Compound articulated.
That's what I like to see and hear. A steam loco gettin' down and dirty. Working hard. The scene with the farmer made me think of something O Winston Link would have photographed. Oh yeah, and that long bell three chime whistle, perfection!
I like it better this way. I get that the Western Maryland scenic railroad would want this in Western Maryland colors, but im glad they throw the C&O roots a bone every now and then
That echo from 8:00 to 9:00 is insane. It sounds very haunting, like a ghost train has come back from the dead (scrapyard) to haunt the rails again. Imagine hearing it at night.
That's my whistle I sold to them. It is a Southern long bell three- chime last used on Southern's Asheville Division and likely cast at the foundry at Asheville NC. I think it's one of the prettiest sounding whistles you'll ever hear.
The last Baldwin steam locomotive is back. Chesapeake and Ohio #1309 pulling a coal drag in it's original colors. Unfortunately that was temporary, it's back in its WMSR colors it had since 2021.
Built for the C&O, lived with the B&O, and now works for the WM… she’ll have worked for the WM longer than she worked for the C&O before her next major overhaul! Engines traditionally wear the colors of the railroad they work for, and if you really want to see a H6 in C&O; 1308 is still around.
Doesn’t this C&O H6 (H 1-5 too) have a very unique trailing truck where the truck frame is almost stationary while the wheels move side to side while negotiating curves on an axle within an axle? Must be an interesting story behind that development.
That whistle kind of sounds like a low pitched version of 611's whistle. That's interesting considering 1309's normal whistle is kind of like the one on 1218.
They put a NYC 6 chime on her in Fall 2022 also. It was really unusual since you almost always imagine hearing it from a fast-moving passenger train, not a big Mallet. It sounded surprisingly well on 1309 though.
WAy cool! 1309 gets shrouded in steam to the point that I think visibility from the cab could be difficult at times. Neat. But I think the whistle is using the most steam! What a wonderful lingering echo coming off those hills... Good show, thanks much.

I was on a Lerro charter on the East Broad Top last October and I will NEVER do another one . Pete is a poor tour operator with little organizing skills. They were cutting tall brush DURING the charter on my dime . This type work needed to be complete way BEFORE the charter !! The night shoot was a total joke and chaos was the major theme. This line , though short , has MANY varied photo sites , yet we spent hours on the big fill at Runk Road. At a fee of $ 850 .00 , I expected MUCH more . NEVER AGAIN Pete .
Cold days always show leaks far worse than they seem on warm days. The cold also usually causes a few leaks… it was freezing most of the time on this charter.
That shot with the farmer waving was great, the whole scene looks like it could have been the late forties/early fifties.
That's Helmstetter's Curve for you. 😀😀😀😀
Wonderful! Thanks!
That Ts-1 Whistle is 1309s destined voice. FR that sounds so dang good! ❤
I personally think the hooter suits her better but this is pretty good too

Hooter is Ideal, This Whistle is that, ChillBumps perfection, both the Hooter and this whistle fit it too well
i like the hooter, but THIS is better imo
Great video. Nothing like a steam locomotive on a cold, winter day.
SOOOOO AWESOME!!!!❣️❣️❣️❣️ What a treat to see her as she originally was!!! Wonderful video, Big Jim!!❤
Excellent coverage and compositional choices. Thank you for sharing!

@@neilbhalodi8797 I am well aware of my mistake on my part. My main point is that the 1309 is a monster of an engine.
That was fantastic 😄 Love US steam and the whistle is magic 👍🇦🇺

Great videos. I was also on that trip. Will post mine probably next week.
Excellent!! And thanks!!
Beautifully filmed
Amazing video Friend!!!
Thank you!!
Sweet. That’s why I miss the America I grew up in. Sweet sound of a big steamer working hard.
Thank you for letting the Steam Engine do all the talking.

Now I understand why they call her a beast!
Отличная работа оператора. Красивые пейзажи, а паровоз просто ВЕЛИКОЛЕПЕН❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Unassisted freight photo op, very cool.
Nice vid of beast of the east Jim she looks snazzy in C&O paint hope to see you at the EBT for the Winter railfan weekend
The crews at WMSR must keep busy swapping C&O with WM and back on the tender. When I rode it last summer, it had Western Maryland on the tender.
This is 1309. This is how it should have come out of the paint shop to begin with 👍🏻. Awesome video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻, She was built for the C&O.
Although the 1309 is classified as a 2-6-6-6 locomotive, she is not an "Allegany" locomotive like the 1601 that is on display at the Henry Ford.
@danielfoster3642 ? Who called 1309 an Allegheny 🤔, 1309 is compound articulated class "H-6" 2-6-6-2 "Mallet" type steam.
@@slagcat Oh, sorry about that. I must have confused the two articulated types of steam engines.
@danielfoster3642 Yes, both the H-6 1309 2-6-6-2 and the H- 8 1600 2-6-6-6 were built by Lima Locomotive, but as far as they go?

No idea what that whistle is but it's beautiful
Long bell 3 chime
A Southern Longbell 3 Chime.
This is probably sacrilege but I prefer the Western Maryland 5 Chime whistles.
@@stgislander I would love to hear #1309 wear a Western Maryland 5 chime. That's not a whistle that is heard very often.
@@razgrizaceblaze259 She'll probably have it on one of these days.

As I have recently learned, it is a Southern long bell 3 chime. Does sound a lot like a Hancock, I agree. Like Frisco 1522.

The locals expressed complaints about the volume of the hooter, so it’s off for now. Long bell whistle sounds amazing, can’t complain!
@@KLTrainz I agree. It's such a shame, though, about the city being upset over an iconic whistle.
I can smell this video!
Be awesome to see that brute slugging it out on the mainline with actual freight.
I am happy that Chesapeake & Ohio 1309 is back to it’s original paint scheme.
It's only temporary. She was painted this way for these charters only. When they are over, 1309 will be painted back into the WM fireball scheme.
Sadly this is temporary
@@TrainsAreReallyCool Is she back in WM colors now?
@@danielfoster3642 I don't know, I haven't seen any updates, but probably.
@@TrainsAreReallyCool Ok.
I wonder where that other 3 Chime is. As in the one it wore in that one short video when it was being boiler tested.
It is privately owned, and at some point was damaged while off WMSR property. It may return one day once it’s been repaired.
Wait a minute when did 1309 get it's original C&O tender put on it?
It’s always had the original tender
Finally it’s back to its original name being C&O

Only for the photo events. It’s going back to Western Maryland paint very soon.
Sou ps4 whistle fits c&o 1309 ex wm 1309
I thought C&O was done using 1309
Why does 1309 have to pull freight 1309 doesn’t pull freight where’s its passenger coaches like the dining car and concession car in the video
It was built as a drag freight engine. It can pull alot more then what you see.
