  • Demonstration with commentary covering equipment, colours & tonal values with the focal point of the foreground boat. The tide was out with lots of sand and the lighthouse.
Please excuse the first 20 seconds as I cut my head off when filming - oops! :-) I'm still learning this filming but I hope you enjoy the video with all my plein air tips on oil painting.

I can't believe how kind and polite passersbys are as they ask permission to snap a pic. None of that here in Canada where ppl stand in the view and take pics with complete disregard. I've even seen someone asking to take the painter's brush and pretend to be painting as the hubby snapped her pic. LOL

I agree people are generally really kind and considerate. You always get the occasional unaware people but someone else using the painters brush must have been stressful for the artist!!

I'm intrigued by the way Clare holds her brush, even when detailing small areas. The shaft of the brush at the business end, between the right thumb and forefinger, is oblique to the canvas, but not exclusively.

Hi Robert, holding the brush ‘overhand’ helps me make expressive marks and it just feels better! Thanks for your observations 😊

Hi Clare, Love your painting!. Ive been sketching for yrs and painted a little in watercolour.... and I too love drawing boats. Im moving now into oil painting to give it a go! I have paints and paper and a few old tattered brushes. I'd like to buy a few decent brushes. I was wondering if you could recommend a few sizes for me. I need a small one for doing the initial drawing in of objects. And I'd like a few more ... say a small , a medium and a large,, as id like to try different size brush strokes. Thanks a million. I'd really appreciate it.
