    I'm an electronics design engineer by trade and actually take a lot of value learning from the design stupidities you find in these machines. Thanks to your explanations of where an engineer effed up I'm now paying more attention to seemingly simple things like pad layout around connectors that undergo mechanical stress. Design doesn't end at the schematic and that is definitely not taught well in schools and universities.

    I'm glad this video is here on RUclips. Went into apple to have them try to fix this issue. They told me the laptop was too old and they no longer have parts to fix this. I asked them if they could just add flux and the apple employee went on to explain that the RAM is soldered so there's no way to fix it then proceeded to attempt to sell us a new macbook. Bought my own flux, did it myself and fixed it. Saved me from needing to buy a new macbook. Never going to genius bar again.

    I spent 8 years working for a rather stingy Polish fellow. Reflowing GPUs on PC and older Mac laptops was one of the few things he took the time to teach me, and was a regular part of the work I had to do. Sometimes the repairs would only last days, sometimes months, sometimes years. I would always warn the customer of this beforehand and would always honour the warranty when things went sour, or offer to credit them for the work toward a different laptop while purchasing the remaining parts for a reasonable sum.
    While there were many we couldn't save, the ones we could were kept out of the landfill for at least a little while longer and made the customer happy. I think the practice, when done honestly, is worthwhile for this reason. Far too many people in our culture treat tech like disposable trash because we are spoiled by how plentiful and cheap the machinery has become.

    I had to Google what reflowing actually does. Apparently, over time fractures can form in the solder. Reflowing melts the solder and therefore gets rid of the fractures in it. Thank you Louis for sending me down this shallow rabbit hole. I learned something!

    • @MonzaRacer
      @MonzaRacer 6 лет назад +2

      Stephen Deinema yeah cause environmental types think electronics using 60/40 solder polluted water(sorry but roughly 70% of ground d lead contamination comes from old car batteries and abandoned small scale gas station tanks from when gas had lead in it) and if electronics we're issue just make it rule to recycle electronics, easy enough. So now we have Rhos compliant ie low lead solder, which kills electronics very quickly as high tin content solder grows hairs or crystals. Main reason satellites and such in outer space now fail quickly as crap solder grows those hairs and shorts out faster in zero g. Fun fact.

    Great video as usual. Had an interesting one come in around a month ago. MacBook Air 13" 2012 needed a battery replacement. Ordered and installed the replacement battery, and the machine booted up with 3 RAM error beeps, but only when running on battery power. Connected the power adapter and the machine booted normally. Removed the battery and reinstalled the original one, and the beeps went away. Reinstalled the replacement battery again, and the machine would beep on battery power. DOA returned the battery, installed the second replacement, and the issue was resolved. Customer has been using it without issue for 3-4 weeks now.
    These were genuine batteries (AASP), and I don't know what caused it, but would absolutely be interested to find out and intend to investigate a little more soon. I thought perhaps it was some kind of voltage drop during startup when the battery was placed under load, or other anomalies with the embedded controller (in one instance it passed testing, then failed "No Battery Installed" after reboot) but that's purely speculative - I need to read up on this a little more first to be sure. An interesting one in any case.

    tried doing this on a A1370 since it had the 3 beep error. Set my quick 857dw+ to 450C (max temp) and about 50% airflow. spent a few minutes heating one of the chips up but it never moved as if it was glued in place before being reflowed in the factory. Everything around it reflowed perfectly fine, even one of the capacitors had the audacity to fly off the board while I was trying to reflow that memory chip but the chip never budged.

    I’ve got a question to do with repairing a RAM stick, figured people here would know something useful -
    One of the SMD caps (or resistors I’m not sure) broke off my RAM stick and now it no longer works. If I just shorted the two pads where the capacitor/resistor used to be with a bit of solder do you think there’s a reasonable chance the RAM would work again?

    • @stonent
      @stonent 6 лет назад +11

      No because many times the capacitor is in parallel across the power rails and you'd be creating a dead short.

      stonent Ok, thank you.

    • @brainndamage

      It's a resistor more than likely, knocking off a decoupling cap shouldn't kill it. Unfortunately you need to replace the resistor with one of the same value to fix it.

    • @1337Shockwav3
      @1337Shockwav3 6 лет назад +4

      Jernej: While generally true I wouldn't bet my horses on that ... the faster stuff gets, the more important becomes decoupling. I used to have a bootleg arcade board from the 80s with ~80 chips which had no decoupling for individual chips (just one big bulk electrolytic for the power rail) and worked just fine (CPU clocked at 4MHz) - yet an ARM based expansion for that machine (~200MHz) stopped working when one of the tiny 47nF caps for decoupling the SRAM broke off.
      In either case ... don't short out connections unless you know what you're doing, chances are good it might kill your hardware for good if you don't.

  • @kenben8207
    @kenben8207 6 лет назад

    i think this macbook will come again to you. semiconductors respond to the heat. and i know about flip chip BGAs. but in this case it is like tantal capacitor. after heating it will work some time but it will die again.
    just try next time to heat the RAMs only - not reflow and it will work too for some time. it will be evidence that reflow doesn't work in this case of issue. only replacement in all probability will work.

    What is it flip chip design? Whats the difference between ram and GPU and other bga chip?

    • @CwazyWabbits
      @CwazyWabbits 6 лет назад

      Normal chips use wire bonds internally to link the die to the balls/pads on the underside, a flip chip the die is flipped over and doesn't use wire bonds to link to the pads but instead uses another layer of solder balls internally. See www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/43310/flip-chip

    You should just add camera selections to your live streams, so people can just chose the camera they like to see. 🤗

    I feel like you should just upload the live streams back on the channel because you can't tell which clips are from which streams so you run into repeated content plus the time spent editing. I mean there's a 5 hour stream on there, how many of these videos just this passed week came from that? I hope you see what I'm getting at and I appreciate the content regardless.

    $11 on eBay. Found it in 30 seconds. I didn’t buy one to confirm the seller didn’t post it then do the ol’ bait and switch.

    wouldn't the cost to repair be more than the Mac value? Why would you get this repaired?

    Well, for me this would go like this:
    - Go to Apple Store.
    - Ask to see Macbook Airs.
    - "Is the ram soldered to the board?"
    - Genius answers "Yes".
    - I leave the store and never in my life even think of buying a Macbook Air ever again.
