I feel it's dumb to think that "Well because there's still clips out there and it's still very much out there, just a bit less, it's a bad metaphor for death" because- Well, there's still going to be videos of you once you die. There's still going to be photos of you. There are going to be little snippets of your life once you die, it just won't be the whole picture.

Exactly!! There are always going to bits and pieces and the memories, but that doesn't change the fact that majority of it is gone.

That’s why I’m okay with all of the compilations and stuff
When people die there’s still pieces of them, photos and memories and sometimes even videos
What’s special is that we were there for the whole thing and we’re not peering in through a foggy window, trying to piece the experience together from what’s still around now

It's like hearing about a family member that passed away before you were born, you might know their name and things about them, you might see videos and pictures, but you'll never really know them unless you were alive to be with them, you'll never get the full picture

    • @eaglefan2569
      @eaglefan2569 3 года назад +17

Ironically, evidence of this exists all over the internet. The pictures taken before disaster? The videos of RUclipsrs that have long since died? The cases you always hear of the deceased who are no longer around to provide clarity to how they died?
The fact of the matter is that you can no longer create new memories with someone after they're gone. Reupload or rewatch as many Unus Annus clips as you want, because that doesn't change the fact that there's no more coming. It ended, finished, completed, and nothing more under that name will exist again. Nothing will ever be as powerful as the genuine article, taken at the time it was around, being there to experience that memory firsthand.

I watched Unus Annus from the start, and logically i understood the message, but when it actually disappeared was when the message really sunk in emotionally. Maybe it's odd, but it made me really want to get back into creating again. It was a fantastic ride and I'll miss it, but I look forward to what it inspires!

That’s exactly how I felt throughout the whole thing! I obviously knew it was gonna end, (Thanks to the intro and outro to each video.) but during the last few hours, minutes, seconds, and especially seeing the blank spaces on the YT app where the videos were before refreshing it,
And the silence of my own neon blue bedroom clock ticking on after the channel was Thanos’d...
I had a very similar feeling to when my grandma died when I was in high school...my last year too...
And at the top of this year before everything happened...my uncle, aka, my grandma’s son... passed away too...
It was tragic then, and it still hurts now, but it is also oddly...empowering too? I don’t know why exactly, but like, I miss them, but I’m thankful for them being in my life, and I wanna do everything I can to make them proud!

@Davi Feitoza I think the reason they're quiet about it is because a lot of people think that people like Mark or Jack or Pewds dont desurve to be popular just because those people dont like them, these people usually being popular kids in school like jocks or bullies, the people in my school who do like Mark, Jack and Pewds are like the nerds and the geeks, I am a geek or whatever that's supposed to mean, I'm a gamer is what I mean, I love old music like Queen, Michael Jackson (I dont care about controversy so I will say that he DID NOT RAPE those kids and that IS A FACT), and Metallica, I also enjoy old tv shows and movies such as Looney Tunes, 101 Dalmations, and Tom & Jerry, I'm a kid in a teenaged emo goth body lol

about a week after unus annus had ended i found out that my best friend was moving away in 6 months. at first i thought that was so much time, but then in my head i remembered what unus annus did and how much time they had, and i took a backtrack. i made a note to myself, to cherish the moments me and my best friend will have together, and right now we have only 159 days to spend with each other before he must leave. if it weren't for unus annus, i would have treated these next 6 months as if i had all the time in the world, and i am glad that i was able to find a new perspective because of that.

I was there from the very beginning. the first video was posted only a few hours prior, the clock at the beginning showed 365:00:00:00.
like you said in the video, Unus Annus gave me a routine.
I am unemployed and I don't go to school, in the past year I've been staying at home doing nothing but staring at the ceiling thinking why am I wasting my life like this.
Unus Annus gave me something to look forward to each day, for that year I would happily wait till 9pm and watch their videos.
they really were a beam of light in my cloudy life.
I am someone whose worst fear is losing control of stuff, knowing exactly when it was going to end made me feel calm, because I was able to mentally prepare myself for the day I wasn't going to see their content anymore.
as the days went down I started to panic at the idea of losing something so important to me, so I did the unthinkable: I downloaded about 30ish videos, that are currently in my drive.
the thing is...I still haven't watched them.
I keep watching compilations, animations and other videos like this, but I can't bring myself to watch what I downloaded...it simply doesn't feel the same as watching it daily on RUclips.
don't worry when I will be ready to let go of this, I will delete them. I know I will.
watching the livestream was a blast, I've been there for all the 12 hours, from 9 pm to 9 am (what a great day to be insomniac), but it felt like watching a 2-3 hours video.
as the clock reached 0 and the screen went dark I started crying.
The feelings I was experiencing were different and incoherent with eachother: I was sad because it was over, I was anxious thinking that I wasn't going to have them cheer me up everyday, but I was happy to be there for the time it lasted, and happy to be there to see the end unfold.
the next day I felt empty seeing the clock strike 9pm and there was no new video, and that was the moment I truly realised what had happened.
this was truly a journey that I will never forget.
no really, because I am getting a tattoo as soon as lockdown is over in my country lol.
in the end, I am so extremely grateful to Mark, Ethan, Amy, the editors, and everyone else who worked on Unus Annus, because they made every single moment feel special, from the dumbest to the most serious.
    memento mori, et memento mortuis.
    Unus Annus.

No. It's valid. Your feelings about the channel, and the time you spent watching Unus Annus, and your story... All of it is an important part of how that wonderful, bizarre, crazy-but-weirdly-heartfelt adventure truly was. Even now, reading your comment, I'm choosing to spend my time reassuring you of how you chose to spend yours, whether it involved speedy downloads of sneakiness or presenting a tiny piece of the chapter of your life story that was this year, or whatever else lies ahead of you. And thinking about it now, I'm pretty sure that's one of the most important things that Mark and Ethan and the gang gave the Unus Annus community. They let us see that when we give someone our time, that's unconditional love at its absolute most basic unit, if such a thing can be measured. We can't just say "Oh you're a jerk, so let me just take back the 2 months I spent trying to be friends with you."
      Life doesn't work that way.
And despite how much we try and ignore it, it never has.
Honestly, I spent most of this year fighting off depression, and I don't think that finding Unus Annus was coincidental. The community surrounding the channel that would eventually die became very quickly a fundamental part of what made the experience so raw and real and tangible. And for me, it gave me a new perspective on a lot of other pieces of the human experience that I personally never considered. Prime example is the concept of distance. My family is currently all over the place right now, and there are days when it's difficult to get together for something as simple as game night. It's usually a roughly 52 mi drive to get to my parents, and don't even ASK how many miles to reach my sister several states away. And it hit me, after being a part of the livestream, that my sister and I were sharing the experience together, even though we were so far apart. So now, any time I make a drive to visit anyone, no matter how far away they are, I don't measure the distance by miles anymore, I measure in minutes. And as those minutes become hours, I spend that time in eager anticipation of how I plan to spend the next portion of my future. The clock stops, sure, but until that final second comes, I want to use the time I have to myself to prepare for the exchange of time between myself and those who share this planet with me. And that's a pretty big commitment, considering I'm an introvert, but you have to start somewhere I guess.
But you want to know the best part about all of this? For me, from that point on....I have no room for depression when the time I could be using to hate myself is being given to someone else. Whether that person of the future is a friend or enemy, whether I meet them irl or on the net, or even whether we agree on the same things or not, I have no clue! But I do know one thing!! The seconds we share together have a weight that will shape our path forward.
So memento mortuis, but also memento viventem...
      Remember the living.

I owe you a great deal of thanks for showing me these clips. They unlocked inside of me a great sadness and pain I had thought locked away forever. It makes me so unbelievably happy that the tears just won't stop flowing. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Thank you! Never has pain ever felt this good. Never have I loved crying more than I do now. I just felt like it was nothing less than fair to let you know. And I want you to know that you helped bring a man back from a very dark place. You deserve to know.
Now I'm gonna hit up Markiplier for the first time ever because his words are what brought me back. And fyi, I had to stop typing every few words to cry and wipe the tears.
Again, From the bottom of my heart, Thank you!

I had heard of Markiplier, but never subbed to their channel.
So understandably I had no idea about this until I saw all the comments on random channels I did watch.
Though I never watched. I understand the message. I get it.
I have had loved ones die, I have lost all contact with some friends I met along the way, I have lost artwork and written work. I can not turn back time to get them back.
I have just my memories, and that won't survive once I leave this mortal coil ( I have no idea when that will be ), but I try to treasure every moment of my life.
The idea behind the one year channel was wonderfully thought out.
Folks will have good memories to share with each other.
Keep living folks. Each moment matters. Soon it comes to an end for us all, one day.
    ♥️

I found out about Unnus Annus the day it ended. One of my friends was an absolute wreck because of it, but they _did_ recommend me one video of theirs, specifically the 'making breakfast with sex toys' one because 'if you can only catch one, that's the one you want.' And, honestly? I've had a really rough time as of late, and I hadn't laughed that hard in months. It was silly, but a good silly. I think I saw one other one, way before, without realizing it was Unnus Annus.
I didn't know what it was, I thought it was just some vlogging channel, I thought the name was a goofy rhyme with Anus or something. Seeing it come and go, with so little between...
It feels a lot like seeing someone I know, a face I recognize, pass me by. I don't know much about who they are, I don't know their name, but it still feels like something is gone.
A fleeting fragment of something I didn't take the opportunity to be a part of.
I actually had nightmares the night it ended from the void- the _sinking_ feeling, the knowledge of this thing that meant so much to my friend, that I didn't know about, was going to be gone. And, that in itself is pretty analogous to life, isn't it? Something or someone that you crossed paths with, but never quite made a part of you, yet it's absence stings all the same.

I loved the idea behind Unus Annus , I personally couldn't watch all the videos and most of the time I thought I will watch them later ... but there is no later
I believe a lot of people needed Unus Annus , paraphrasing Mark , in an age where people talk so much about what you put in the internet stays there forever , and with so many backups, streaming services, online entetainment , we ... or at least I forgot how temporary everything is. We have a set a amount of time on this Earth we were born in , we don't know how much time we have and yet the clock will NEVER stop ticking towards it's inevitable end.
Some people will have a big chunk of their life without experiencing loss, of a friend or a family member but it will happen, Not to sound morbit , everyone you know will die , everything you know will one day end , so what will you do ? , cry and be sad cause all things will one day end. Or will you stand up and make every second that you have count , I know I wasn't appreciating the time I had with the people I love and I am making sure to change that now.
So with that said , what are you waiting for?!
the clock started long ago and it is NOT going to stop.

I watched unus annus (technically) from the beginning. I watched the first couple videos when they came out, but then it kind of slipped my mind until 2-3 months had already passed. Then it clicked: this channel isn't going to last forever and if I want to experience it to the fullest, I need to catch up. It took me a bit because I have a busy schedule most of the time plus I'm easily distracted, but I finally caught up around the time COVID really started to hit America.
I'm so grateful I decided to catch up and watch the videos from then on the way they were meant to be viewed (at least how I see them): along with Ethan and Mark (Unus and Annus). To live along side them and create memories along the way. They made me laugh, they made me cry, they made me feel wanted.
Not a day goes by that I don't miss my daily dose of Unus Annus, but I get a sense of comfort knowing that I can watch Mark and Ethan's own channels and get a sense familiarity because, as you said in the video, it was a lot of the same energy for the most part, and also knowing that I'll always have those memories with me. And that was one of the purposes of the channel: for it to become a memory.

I found Unus Annus in January after the video "Emotional vs. physical pain... Which is worse?" showed up in my recommended. Although I had never watched Mark and didn't even know who Ethan was, I clicked on the video. I enjoyed it, so I watched a couple more videos and then decided to actually look at what the channel was. At first I thought it was Ethan's channel, but I quickly realized Mark was in every video, so I scrolled to the first video. That's when I found out that this random channel was something much more special. Little did I know I would go on to watch almost every video and fall in love with the channel. Ethan and Mark became two of my favourite creators/people. I made fan accounts on instagram and twitter and met so many amazing people who shared my love for them. I cried many times over the thought of it ending, especially in the last month. When November 13th came, I tried my best to watch as much of the stream as I could. It went by so incredibly fast, especially the second half and the last hour. In the last few minutes I found myself extremely anxious. My legs were bouncing and my hands were shaking (despite the fact that my hands almost never shake). But then as the clock struck zero and the screen turned black, I felt eerily calm. And oddly enough, I didn't feel sad anymore. The second the channel was deleted was the second I moved from the depression stage to the acceptance stage, and I think that's beautiful. It was truly over, and that was okay. I sat in that profound 1am silence for a few minutes, and then went on social media to see what everyone else was thinking and feeling. After maybe ten minutes I went back to my laptop. I clicked on an unus annus video. Video unavailable. I searched "unus annus" and clicked on the channel. This channel does not exist. After that I wrote out a long paragraph, posted it, and went to bed. I still regret how I never watched about 25 videos, and how I didn't rewatch a lot of the other videos. I'll probably regret that for my entire life. I do have access to the videos, but no matter how much I want to watch them, I can't bring myself to do it. It won't be the same, and I guess I'm also scared that I'll regret watching the videos after they were deleted. So that's my experience and feelings about the channel. Sorry this was super long.
    Memento Mori.
    Unus Annus.

I was not expecting to find this. I do agree with what was said. Me being someone who dropped and then got back into the channel, I wasn't able to see every video. While I may know a lot about the channel,I can't say I know all but I do appreciate its message. I am someone who thinks about death a lot, idealized it, wished for it, questioned it, so Memento Mori, remember death, wasn't a new concept for me. The thing that hit me about Unus Annus is how little I take time for granted. How I always push what I want off the table and put everyone else first when I really should learn to focus on myself. Unus Annus showed that to me in many ways, from me not being as invested in it as I wanted to be, to its year alone, and my life. I've only recently, after Unus Annus ended, have I realized how I want to live my life, it's just hard to get there. It's hard to start when it feels like everything around you is telling you you can't but you feel like you can all at once

Unus Annus really helped me with realizing how much time we have left. I sometimes obsess about it, but it is an important thing. I’m currently working on developing a comic story I want to make in the future at some point (I’m still a teenager, though, so it’ll be quite a bit). It’s a larger one and I’m very excited to work on it one day, but I’m not sure that it should be my first comic. I’m trying to come up with other stories, a little bit more lighthearted but everything I make turns out sad and somewhat depressing. I have some good ones, though. And I think they’re like that due to quarantine, so I shouldn’t blame myself. Anyways, Unus Annus helped me recognize how short time is, but I’m always scared I’m not using it as wisely as I can, even though I know I’m a human being. I just wanted to put something down here. Thank y’all and thank you Toon Ruins.

Their channel meant a lot to me, I was there from start to finish and watched every video.
I never had a good handle on my life, so the 12 hour live stream did feel like 12 hours to me. I've spend a long time using my time wrong and never finishing the things that mattered to me. The end of Unus Annus meant something to me, and I never once thought they would back out of it. Watching the beginning of the end and catching up on everything I missed became my life in those last 2 weeks.
It's not the first time I've watched a channel I loved die, not even the first time in a live stream, but it was the first time I saw it as a choice. They chose to end it. I chose to watch it end. And I moved on, with a new hole in my existence, and the desire to make a change in my life. To be someone different a year from now. To be one step closer to the reality I always wanted for myself. I can't keep asking myself how I'll change, or when I'll start. The clock has been ticking since I was born. I just have to accept that my time is limited, and one day I want to be proud of my life, just like they were proud. I told myself a long time ago that I didn't want to live life at a stand still or in my own limbo. I wanted to really enjoy my life, and I plan to try this time.
I will always love that channel, and I will always miss it. But I respect that it is gone now.

I watched it from the moment I saw Ethan and Mark post about it on their channels. And when it ended, it hurt so much for 2 days. It felt like losing a friend, and only having pictures and memories of them. I agree with you, I cannot watch reuploads of their videos. It just hurts more, and feels so disrespectful. It feels wrong since most of those channels are trying to pretend to be the real Unus Annus. It's like someone impersonating your friend and saying they didn't die when they did. I know that's pretty dramatic but that's how I feel. I also love that people are still talking about it a couple weeks after it ended. It really shows the impact Unus Annus had. Momento Vivire. But the thing that truly matters is, how did you contribute and how many ppl you have affected. Like Mark said, "It'll make sense when it ends".
Everyone is going to die, that's the fact. No one on this Earth is Immortal and you can't take anything with you when you have died.
Whatever you had done, will determine if you are a legend, a name, or a forgotten soul.

And not only grief for the channel- my own fears, the fear I'm wasting my life, the fear I won't be able to do anything about it. I don't know how. I try to think that as long as I'm enjoying myself, and making others happy, it's not wasted- but I could do so much. I could create, I could learn, I could discover. And I have time, I have all the time, but if only I could do something with it.

I like to believe nothing is truly dead until the impact is gonna.... Unus Annus basically revived more so the message “memento mori” with their own wack twist added to it.
I’d like to think that because you (and anyone else who has discovered it post death) are still impacted by it you are still part of it in a way.
Still it is sad, and I wish that you were there because we would have loved to have you on that wack journey (that kinda sounded creepy, but Unus Annus was/is basically a “cult” so-)
      Lastly...
If you don’t have the moment than you have the memories, if not the memories than the friends, if not the friends than the evidence, if not the evidence than the feelings and the message... if not the feelings than the impact....
Nothing ever truly dies but everything is still temporary.

I know it's a comedic cartoon, but I'm starting to think all or at least one of the Warner siblings are autistic. I don't know, but honestly Wakko is my favourite. The middle child doesn't get enough love. All three of those children are my favourite. I don't know, it's a show that has a cult following but I'd like a neurodiverse intake on it? Also keep up the great work. You're the person who got me into Steven Universe. Gives me mad anima vibes and I love it! Peridot is my favourite. Also, do you watch anime or read manga? Hey!
    (Tl;dr at the bottom)
When Unus Annus first started, I was curious, but intrigued. And when I saw the first official video, admittedly, it wasn’t for me, but I still stuck by the channel until the bittersweet end. I watched as many videos as I could and during the livestream I made fan art, and conversed in the chat a bit, and it was really surreal for me to think that everything on the channel was gonna be deleted in only a few short hours...
And those last seconds, they were the longest seconds of my life...ever! To say I was moved by the whole thing is an understatement! I felt sad, happy, thankful, bewildered, somber, and satisfied all at once!
It has helped me put things into perspective and realize that death, while scary and inevitable, can in fact make life much more better, no matter what that life throws at us! Now obviously, there are situations that people shouldn’t ever have to be in and they have every right to want a better life, but even then, you have the power to do something about it instead of just letting life pass you by!
My closing remarks, I’m currently trying to do animation and practicing storytelling, and also working to be able to collab with my artist friends, and the art/animation community in general, but I’m considering, when I retire, or die, (which is a long way off, but still) I might simply end the run of all my projects! I’ll close out all my animated series, I’ll bookend my comics, and somehow, don’t know how, I’ll say goodbye to my friends, family, my characters, my equipment, and most of all, everyone who helped me throughout my life! No matter how my life turns out!
Now of course, that is a long way off, and all of this could be completely scrapped for something different! But no matter what happens, I’ll make the most of my time! And also, (this is for anyone reading this) doing nothing doesn’t make you any less productive than doing something. We all need occasional breaks, and that’s ok. 👍
Tl;dr, Unus Annus changed my life, and helped me to be ok with not having everything in place, and never being “perfect”. Instead, I can make the most of my life right now and do what I can with the time I have. :)
(Sorry for rambling, I hope it’s not too much)

Great video! Unus Annus was a piece of conceptual performance art, and I love seeing people acknowledge that even if it isn't in those exact terms. Mark and Ethan managed to get so many people invested in this. People dressed up fancy for the ending livestream/funeral thing- they managed to get _me_ to put on a hastily thrown-together funerary costume for it at 1 in the morning! This is the power of art. It's not just old paintings of naked people and winged babies, it's this stuff too. Conceptual art is cool. This channel was proof of it.

    My feet are aching
And your back is pretty tired
And we've drunk a couple bottles, babe
    And set our grief aside
    The Papers say it's doomsday
    The button has been pressed
We're gonna nuke each other up boys
    'Til old satan stands impressed
And here it is, our final night alive
And as the earth runs to the ground
Oh girl it's you that I lie with
As the atom bomb locks in
Oh it's you I watch TV with
As the world, as the world caves in
You put your final suit on
    I paint my fingernails
Oh we're going out in style babe
    And everything's on sale
    We creep up on extinction
I pull your arms right in
I weep and say goodnight love
While my organs pack it in
And here it is, our final night alive
And as the earth runs to the ground
Oh girl it's you that I lie with
As the atom bomb locks in
Oh it's you I watch TV with
As the world, as the world caves
Oh it's you that I lie with
As the atom bomb locks in
Yes it's you I welcome death with
As the world, as the world caves in
    As the world caves in

Even seeing these clips of them is giving me all the feels - i pulled an all nighter for the live steam and i know i wasn't the only one crying when the clock hit zero... This was an incredible channel that made me laugh every day and I'm so glad they deleted it because damn, I've never felt anything like I did in that moment. Thank you for giving us this video to help us remember them.

As the clock ticks down we all scatter round and share a laugh or two,
but when that clock strikes down we all gather round we mourn the loss of you,
as life goes on and our own clocks tick we may lose track of time,
yet the clock keeps going and time keeps moving as we’re all trapped in a bind,
when my clock strikes and my time comes I hope that I won’t mind,
I hope to leave with a smile as I drift off and die,
and one last message to give to all and to close out our story,
it’s a mindset for life, and it’s called Memento Mori.

In the blink of an eye, it was gone. One year seemed like all the time in the world, but then it wasn't. And, you know what? I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I took it for granted. I'm sorry I forgot. I am *not* sorry that I watched it.
