Thank you for this. My son and I are headed to ride from the coast to Basel and the whole train process has me a bit intimidated. I'm also excited to show my wife this since you are using ebikes. Looks amazing. Cheers. -H
Hi David, Thanks for the comments. We travelled in September, so out of the peak tourist season but still pretty busy. The only train where we booked the bikes in advance was Bremen to Basle, which was obligatory. Otherwise, ie in France, we just hopped on with our bikes unreserved. You're right about Lyon-Marseille, it was the one train with a special bike carriage. Difficult to get in and out of the train due to the steps, but there was always another cyclist there to help! As for the costs, it's worth downloading the SNCF-Connect app, where you can try out journeys for yourself. But to give you an idea, Lyon-Marseille costs about €37 on the TER train with the bicycle carriage. All the best, Richard.
Really interesting real world experience of using trains with bikes. The Lyon to Marseille train looked like it had lots of space for bikes. It would be interesting to know what time of year you travelled, whether you booked the bikes in advance and how much the journeys cost. I've always found travelling by train with the bike to be a bit of a stressful experience!
Hi David, Sorry for the slow response. We travelled in September, and booked all the trains in advance. But there was no need to reserve bike space on any of the French trains - they were all regional and it was simply first come, first served. Interestingly, TGV trains from Paris to Marseille have started taking bikes, although there are few spaces and they need reserving.
Excellent video, I just found it on RUclips and I think it's great, but it was 1 year ago. Will you continue publishing videos of bicycle rides, so I can subscribe and publish in my contact networks? Greetings

Thanks! Glad we can help.
Thanks for posting this.
Further to my last comment, just read the info in your link. Lots of practical information here, thanks.

By year end all platforms in Swiss stations will have been raised and train carriages with steps replaced.
Useful info James, thanks.

Hi @macola1970. Yes, we'll be continuing to publish videos on this channel, primarily about the EV8 in Provence. Well be doing an update this summer.
