    Whatever happens at 29:15 where the treble booster immediately starts to feedback is spine-tingling! One of those notes/moments I play over and over for minutes at a time

    I read in a guitar magazine once that the Treblebooster must go into the Normal Channel. That's supposedly how Blackmore etc. did it in the olden days, also suggesting that this is the way how you get those classic "Smoke on the Water" etc. sounds. It makes a lot of sense after seeing how Dan & Mick struggled with the Treble Booster into the High Treble channel.

    The wet/dry with headroom towards the end is exactly how i use my sv20 and origin50, plenty of headroom wet/dry, plenty of control allowing the wet effects into a 2x12 marshall cab to blossom and then pushing sv20 which is the dry with boosts into a marshall410 cab gives you the plexi character with control….makes me happy!

    These old Marshall amps were actually made for on stage. You both sitting in front of it in a relatively small room is a total different experience. I totally understand not having fun to nót hear wat the sound does, losing the range of definition and all dynamics on maxed out volume.
    You showed the amps still sound gorgeous on lower volumes.
    That’s why I like my 18W plexi clone playing at home. Thanks!

    Star of the show: Strat and fuzz into the Marshall. Perfect chimey cleans with the guitar volume rolled down, and nice rounded, squishy growl with it cranked. I struggled with most of the tones in the video before the wet/dry segment. Unlike seemingly most people, I love the sound of a Marshall at edge of breakup, and hate the sound of a Marshall cranked.

    The 1987 cranked reminds me of an organ with all the drawbars up. All those extra harmonics make it a very different beast, lots of fun but very little definition. When you start carving back out some of that additional upper harmonic content it can cut through the mix with a lot more clarity.

    I am really hoping you do this sort of video with the JTM45...I am really interested in it as a clean amp and a reasonable volume pedal platform. Really want to hear it with a compressor, and just focusing on the amazing cleans. But I imagine I am not the only one to say that. You guys are ace as always.

      I use a Bluesbreaker 1962HW combo as a clean platform, because it's great at that and also because there is basically nowhere you could crank it without being told to turn down. I can confirm it's fantastic.

      Seconding what Ian said. I don't have the HW version, (1992 RI for me). I have it alongside a twin and a deluxe reverb. I don't crank it and am not terribly interested in doing so. It's a fabulous clean amp.

      @@ianbrailsford5843 , My main amp is also a 1962HW and I bought a Fryette Power Station 2..which, along with attenuation and the capability of multiple cabinets etc, gives me an effects loop. So I keep the amp cranked! It is absolutely incredible and something no pedal can touch. Just turn the guitar volume down for beautiful clean tones..The touch sensitivity is absolutely awesome! I mostly use an Analogman King Of Tone when I want to take the gain above and beyond.

    Do you have an episode that goes over the lexicon of guitar tone?
    There are many properties and all sorts of words are used to describe tone, for example, sizzle, chime, chunky, growl, fat, thin, etc.
    I think talking about tone can be analogous to talking about the properties of wines or foods. I think there are pedagogies and lexicons for wine and food, but I haven’t seen one about guitar tone. As a point of clarification, I am not talking about how/why a Vox has a chime, rather I am talking about the fact that “chime” is a facet of tone to consider and gives a sonic example of a tone with no chime, some chime versus lots of chime.

    Blimey. Treble channel dimed sounded absolutely unbelievable. Just really really good. But I can see you working. I think recording knocks some of the overtly raucous edge off, but you can feel the volume. At times you looked like you were baiting a rat trap! Amazing stuff. Thanks gents.

    Well the other thing that one can do is clip the bright cap altogether. Treble at six-seven adds the right saturation most of the times really. Great presentation !!!

      Or replace it with one that isnt so aggressive. Or put a few different bright switch options on a switch including off. I did that on my 2203x (not sure if it should be done on a vintage amp - perhaps a push/pull pot would be better!)

    I wish this had existed when I had a 4 hole Marshall 20 years ago and didn’t have a clue how to use it. Ended up trading it for a jubilee, which was *fine*. Fun video, thanks guys.

    When cranking the high input only, while lowering the volume on the guitar, that clean tone is so alive that seems to jump off from the screen. It's glorious!

    The Boss LS-2 line selector would work great in that Y situation. You could do A/B channel switching. And it works as a clean boost.

    Strat into Marshall(s) is a sound of ages!
    The wet/dry at the end piqued my interest to see a one manufacturer wet/dry show! Fenders, Mesa, Victory etc. Think it could throw up some nice noises

    P 10, B 0, M 10, T 10, V 10, V 0. No jumper!
    This is the way to get the most gain from a classic Marshall, but it does sound massively different with different cabs and speakers. The cab TPS is probably on of the best ones for that sound. You should do a collab with Johan Segeborn!

    The whole show was an assambly of amazing noises, that most definitely go on the naughty list. However, the cranked wet dry thing was amazing, and even though you prefer headroomier sounds, you got us tones with great character.

    One advantage comes with using an A/B/Y pedal for the jumper method. Then you have basically 3 different sounds at the push of a pedal (channel one, channel 2, and channel 1+2 jumped)

    I really enjoyed listening to this episode. A Marshall cranked where the overall volume is controlled at the guitar is a reminder of how great these critters sound, background hiss not withstanding because once you’re playing, the hiss is no longer evident. Loud is more good! I do concur with the bright cap mod. When the guitar is up and the amp down the treble channel gets like a velociraptor. Very bitey

      I have one (a reissue from around 15 years ago with an effects loop) and I never considered thar mod, till today. My main amp is a Rivera (or, amps. I have 2 and love them). But nothing is like a Marshall.

      @@loulasher I agree that there is nothing that sounds like a Marshall. My original Marshall has no effects loop, but my later JCM 2500 does. I use it through a UA OX and don't have that ice pick issue with it, only with the older, noisier Custom Super Lead Mark II which only has one channel with a hi and a low input

    Both amps on was absolutely glorious! Cranked 1987 to me would work if your just going for the all out balls to the wall "I don't use pedals" player but imho, was really enjoying both amps wet/dry thing... Good show boys! keep em coming!

    So it wasn't just a dream or 80's hallucination!? I thought I saw this when I woke up this morning (Here in the US), and then whoosh! it was gone! Thanks for fixing whatever needed fixing, and we'll give this a go here in just a little bit! I am really looking forward to this! (The homeowner's association decreed that my owning specifically, any 1987X noise making devices, is forbidden, and my castle may be stormed... Might have to move again.... 🙃 ) Cheers, y'all!

    I had a Marshall 50watt small box from 1971 with a Univox 4/12" cab. Not positive what speakers were in it. EV's I think. I used an MXR Dyna Comp with the output and Sensitivity both set at 1 O'clock and that took that abrasive edge off perfectly. Guitar was an early 70's Gibson Les Paul Deluxe with mini humbuckers in it. Plugged in to the high treble channel all knobs on 10. Sounded great.

    You guys did an excellent job "demoing" the amp and you got a lot of really killer tones along the way. Some really great tones with the tele in particular.
    The Les Paul - I've been playing them forever, but I always feel like it takes me 5 minutes to figure out how t get it in tune and play the thing in tune. I can't put my finger on that. Nothing else sounds like them though. More than other guitars, it really feels like you have to warm up with them for a while.
    Bottom line, just try to remember to have fun with this stuff. Trying to be encouraging here because it is well deserved. Playing at those types of volumes is flat out hard, like you hear every nuance of everything and it's like you are totally naked or something. Some really fantastic tones in there though. Also like the spotlight on the amps, and would love to see some more amps kicked through their paces.

    Yal put a lot on the line for this video. I would have turned everything off and unplugged everything, from the wall and all, as soon as I heard those whistle notes.
    I'm a fender clean man at heart but my second fav overdrive sound is a Marshall amp I take both every where I can. Great video I never thought about some of those ideas. Pedals were invented for fun and you guys maximize the art of it. Bellissimo! 🤌

    The oldest Marshalls had a 100pF bright cap as in the old Fenders. That's my favourite. Keeps the shimmer intact, but doesn't get overly bright.
    I also run my old 1987 with only the bright channel a about 8. That way you can easily get Van Halen amounts of gain out of the amp, and it doesn't get muddy. Bright channel keeps things tight.
    But, as far as bright caps go, try 100pF. I really think it's the best at just retaining about the same amount of highs throughout the volume pot sweep.

    If you guys want an attenuator that WONT suck the life out of it, the Aracom PRX150-DAG or Pro2. I've tried quite a few attenuators and this one is the only one that keeps all of the character you get from a cranked amp. I use mine with a 1959 circuit Marshall. Gets it more than quiet enough. Most others I've tried will either sap some low end, some high end or even a bit of both!

    Splittah!!! I had an Electro Harmonix Switch Blade channel selector when I was a kid. I combined the normal channel and the deep channel together on my bass amp and had no idea what I was doing. Still don't. Love you guys, now show us your silly walks!

    Yet another great show, very instructive, thank you. Suggestion for a future show: what difference does the wattage do in dynamics / headroom / feel at similar volume levels between a 20 watts Plexi like the sv20h, the 50 watts 1987x and a full 100 watts Plexi?
    Why would you chose one vs the other besides the sheer power?

      The different amp voicings will complicate the results. Really want to test amp dynamics? Record a 100W amp into whichever cab. Then, remove the two outer power tubes and set the speaker Z to half the cab Z. See how it compares at the same settings.

    The tones at high volume are fantastic.
    This could be why for most of us chasing tone via, guitar type, amp type or pedals, it’s not until your playing loud, under fire you begin to understand the full picture?
    A bit like riding the IOM TT course the faster you go the more the track changes?!

      Ha! Yeah, exactly. It upsets people to say it, but all the sims and the attenuators and the low volume… it’s just not the same thing. It might be easier, more convenient, more real-world and all that, but people should never be fooled that it’s //anything// like playing at full chat!
      Nice bike analogy. I always use cars in the same way. Your AMG Mercedes is not a formula 1 car. It just isn’t. Likewise an F1 car is no good whatsoever for going to Sainsburys! Haha! Mick here. :0)

    Many Thanks Mick and Dan, for cranking out 105+ dB of Marshall valve goodness, which most of us with neighbours can only dream of 😀
    As an aside, I would have thought the only difference between jumpering the inputs on the amp vs at the guitar is the length of cable. You'd still be halving the signal to each amp input, but there's less guitar cable that you're pumping through the weakened signal. There's pictures of Jimi with the inputs jumpered with 2m coiled cable. Maybe you need to try that 😃

    Hey guys, I don't know how possible it would be, but since you're based on a farm and have some space to play with, and now that we're getting more that amp shows, it would be super cool to see you guys replicate dave gilmour's pompeii rig, to see all the cabs lined up, and to see the challenge of trying to capture and record it, again, don't know how possible but would be amazing! Great show again chaps, cheers!
    Quick edit: The high pitched frequency with the Y cable was definitely captured, maybe not as loud as in the room, but it definitely hurts my 23 year old ears

    Hey Guys, i don't know if this would be the right topic for a full legth show, but i would love to see a show on utility pedals like for example signal splitter, parallel mixers, aby switcher and expression pedals. I basically wonder if ican replicate the routing or automation options I have in my DAW on my pedalboard. I think like an overview of all the possibilities would be fun.
    Anyway i really enjoy watching you guys doing what you do best. Cheers

    Great video and the amp sounds incredible. You're blessed to have a space to let a Marshall crank! I would have also loved to hear just some straight up palm muted power chords just to hear it chug. I know that's not really what you guys typically do, but it would be great hear some straight up rock as well. Keep up all the great work as always. And any "guitar straight into the amp" content is always welcome!

    I think the brightness of the amp is exactly what makes it work! The classic rock guys knew that bright tones cut through in a recording or live environment. Listen to Jimmy Page’s guitar parts soloed, and they seem impossibly bright.
    I’m also surprised you guys were so overwhelmed by this amp considering you played the far more punishing 100 watt HiWatt. The transients and lack of compression of a HiWatt will take your head off!
    I’ll grant that a modern day 1987x can be harsh sounding, so, Lastly, the importance of the speakers cannot be overstated. A pre-Rola era Celestion greenback very naturally rolls off the high end, removing that harsh edge and sizzle and giving a creamier attack. Check out Johan Segeborn’s channel for videos illustrating what a big difference it makes.

      As we explain, it’s not the volume that’s the issue, it’s the tone. Super happy with bright cranked amps, just like a bit more control around the tone. A 1959 does that a bit better IMHO

    Dan and Mick, great video.
    Are you planning on repeating this with the JTM45?
    My additional suggestions would be;
    Run the bass almost off, mids high.
    Different speakers ( Vintage 30s or G12H 30s)
    Jumper cable but bright channel as main sound with normal channel dialled in ( you run the other way round here)
    Y cable, same idea
    No pedals, grainy tones with guitar volume clean up.
    Need to spread the JTM45 love

    Dan and Mick are on a trip I also did a few years ago. Started with the 1987x but disliked its treble cap. It was too much cranked as Mick said. Bought the JTM45 and set it cleanish with pedals. Ended up with a 1986 bass circuit amp. Basically the JTM with more headroom that goes better with pedals. Nice round cleans and a King Of Tone to give the well known Marshall roar. It's a pity that Marshall doesn't reissue this circuit.

    Bit late to the party (was deep in the YT editing trenches for the new vid), but I need to say that THING 3 is a glorious thing. I did like THING 4, too, though. Well, frankly, I liked all the things for different reasons. I desperately wish I had room for wet/dry. I think I need to try to find a decent, budget treble booster. Great fun, gents!     The thing is, Mick (and Dan) sounds absolutely glorious on that cranked Marshall.
    And I think to myself -what’s he talking about he can’t play in tune? That’s just false modesty…
    Then you set up the wet-dry rig with the Juggler and it becomes abundantly clear there is another plane there for you to play in.
    Brilliant.

    A variety of tonal aspects including attack, sustain, clarity of chord notes and player preferred balance of frequencies are available to the artist. Also, all sorts of distortion, which are the product of signal amplitude variance within certain frequency range, add qualities previously unknown. Pedals are the original and irreplaceable additions to all amplification systems which are limited by their design and beg for help. Helpfulness is in the ear of the "behearer" regardless of instrument being amplified. The need for additional devices (some are called pedals) will, likely, never disappear.

    Thank you for this video, guys! I'm with Mick (and Dan) in that whilst the aggressive GRRR (does clawed fingers sign) is what we've come to love about the Marshall sound, and is great in the band mix, I have been struggling with the raspy, harsh element and have attempted to remove whilst maintaining the heart and character of the amp. Particularly when playing in the higher register. A graphic EQ helps to some extent, as does having the gain set lower and using an overdrive boost to get me in that territory. I am now considering an ABR bridge with nylon saddles and an alnico 2 bridge PU to see what difference that'll make, but I'd be very interested to hear the 1987X after the bright cap mod. Hope to see that video and details in the not too distant future.

      Just try backing off your volume knob on the guitar and use a pedal for more gain. Depending on pots between 6-8 maintains the thickness while removing the unpleasant high end(important not to have a treble bleed on the guitar). Only when doing this does having the EQ(bass low or off) and presence cranked make perfect sense. The sound with the guitar on 10 is unpleasant, but from barely on up to 8-9 gives you every rhythm and lead Marshall sound you could want. If 8 on guitar isn't enough gain, the sound is better boosted instead of going to 10 on guitar with these amps. Also more presence adds gain in these old NMV circuits. This will tame that harshness you speak of while still having the guitar straight in as the first frequencies the guitar volume lowers are the highs and upper mids which softens things up.
