I’m 38 and I’ve never had any social media accounts, never played online games and didn’t even get a cell phone till I was 22. Kids nowadays live with electronics. At my house my kids don’t get internet or cell phones and we spend two nights a week for family nights where we all play board games or go work on our land. I feel kids brought up with strong family relationships and hard work turn into great adults and great parents.
Spending time online makes ME feel inadequate and depressed, and at my age, I should be impervious. I hate to think what it's doing to kids. Lisa Strohman, congratulations on your pioneering work, and thank you for shining a light on the danger of laissez-faire technology. I hope that as a nation we get on board NOW. Great TED talk.
My Father (RIP) used to make his own lemonade at the table in the exact same manner. He did this no matter how swanky the restaurant. He made a joke out of it when my Mother would say “oh Bob, everyone’s looking at you.” I think he did it even more passionately knowing that he was the center of attention inn a room full of attention hounds. He didn’t care how it made him look. He was proud to be a product of the depression…a survivor. Now I can continue with the subject matter that relates to my 9 year old daughter. I appreciate you.

Of course this video purpose is to outline a series of bad behaviors, but the responsibility to make a safe environment around your kid which by nature doesn't include these bad habits it's up to you as a parent. It honestly reminded me of my mom and grandparents when they were more christian, just going on and on about how games are bad, lightly supporting it with science but without real explainations or measurements, only to conclude ''that one thing that you find fun is actually bad for you at EVERY level'', wich as far as i understand is not true, as videogame addiction repeatedly gets rejected by official health orgs as an actual condition. And more and more studies show benefits that directly contradict the suposed drawbacks explained in this ted talk. Idk, im kinda obliged to watch this for UNI work but the science seems a little shoddy here, tho i doubt ill say that in my writtings

The effects are devastating. As parents, we MUST address these issues with our children. We need to parent through technology. Dr. Strohman gets this right. This Tedx Talk needs to go viral. Our health as a species is at stake.
Humans weren't designed to use their hands to press buttons all day, and our bodies weren't designed to sit all day and neither were we born to keep our heads still all day in front of our screens. We associate sitting with eating, as cinemas and shows encouraged a break involving a snack, which we associate when we watch a film on our tv, and now we are using screens most of the day, watching a screen during our working days, or school days, our evenings, its become sociable to engage on a screen to connect with our families, friends, celebrities, all the while thinking of food, when a break comes on or an advert appears, its time to raid the food cupboard, we are sitting down and eating is easy sitting and near impossible whilst in movement. Family meal times are interrupted by screens, meal times aren't the norm with everyone busy on screens, working from home, your near a fridge, at work snack are easy to have whilst working, and our phones have become part of who we are, the latest model makes you feel more acceptable to society, and today if you don't have one you become isolated from society. The health implications, is the damage done to our skeletal body, physiotherapists are required for injuries caused by sitting still all day, muscles are wasting, mental stress and fatigue, weight gain, are happiness declines as we are no longer taking action in relation to who we are, our thoughts and feelings, and if we aren't who we are, then who are we? Real physical activity is no longer the norm, and physical jobs are becoming the intrusion into our screen time, missing out on the latest tweet or saga on the screen. Technology has become a habit and is controlling the world's subconscious. Love is lost, time for a momentary hug, a kiss, which humans crave, and technology has taken over.
To be honest, I don’t feel depressed from using technology and the thought of suicide never even crossed my mind. Your point was powerful and true, but like for everything, there are exceptions : I spend 7-8 on my iPad yet I use it to communicate with friends and play games. I know it’s a serious issue as I’ve witnessed some addicted people growing up, but if there weren’t ways to communicate outside of school/work/ anything you do in person, people wouldn’t even ask the ones they trust for advice and go ahead to suicide. I get that it’s a cause for suicide, but sometimes it can also be a way to fight that urge, if a person thinking to take their life didn’t tell their friends or people they trusted, they wouldn’t know if their reason was worth it, if they could have another option or if they could have the support needed to live happily and thrive. It all depends on who is faced with this decision. True, young ones take their life more than in the past, but it can’t be fully blamed on technology, of course it was a factor but not the only reason : they could have used substances like drugs ( cigarettes/ drinking ) which led them to not thinking straight, possibly even committing to die while the effects of the drugs were still present. They could have had a fall out with a friend or broken up in a relationship. There are many other reasons too. The point was true, technology advancement is alarming and has been in the past few years, but maybe, just like the first iPhone/iPad/computer/tablet etc. was created, we can find another hobby, one that doesn’t involve our brain rotting but only growing more. Anything is possible.
I think it is hard to compare one persons brain who is “healthy” then comparing it to a completely different brain and person who is online all the time and uses devices all the time. Not only are both those brains very different but both of those people are very different as well. But the scan itself is different because of “newer technology” I mean some people are chemically imbalanced and there brain doesn’t produce enough dopamine. It’s really easy to compare two different pictures but there are so many variables in play here that it is extremely hard to tell. I am sure this is probably true but I don’t think they are looking at the big picture. The big picture is everyone is different and peoples dopamine levels aren’t all the same at all in fact I would like to look at multiple peoples brain scans for the “healthy brain” and I would also like to see multiple brain scans of people who use technology all the time. I think that would show more evidence and prove your point even further if your theory is correct.

Yeah I use to play video games all time 80 percent of my life was video games now most of my time is working paying bills now iam worry stress and depressed let kids play video games because when they get older life sucks
There is no way around technology addiction. Countries are spending millions in supporting science and technology research, and Humans love easy things. Thus, no solution for this. We are stuck.
Your response does not address computers, which can prove to be addicting, yet absolutely necessary. The issue is more complicated than removing one thing from one's life.
