I gotta look into it I never Bloom finished that well! I know Stutsman did a good job bringing the program back up. But they have been on a nasty decline for a while now, would like to see them compete at a high level like that again.
In the jr. leagues, my very first match ever was against Rico Chiapparelli at 85lbs. At 10 and 11 yrs old he and his brother Lou were already 3 time champs. I didn't know shit but was quick as lightning, he didn't care he pinned my ass in the first period. It was just another day at the office for him. He was an amazing wrestler even as a child.
Rules were sht back then. Terrible out of bounds rule. Way too much focus on weight cutting / day before weigh ins. 3 period over time, no sudden death, criteria. Can't chose neutral. And of course, Dan Gable pressuring the refs all the time.
@@daytonasayswhat9333 well it wasn’t always like that. In some cases they just went with a Hawkeye regardless. For example, Lee Kemp vs Chuck Yagla. Yagla stalled basically the entire match, and barely took a shot, and when in it came to the end of overtime, they chose Yagla when Kemp was creating all the offense
If you have eligibility and are enrolled at the school, you can compete in a sport of your choosing if you're good enough. If you went pro, you're ineligible.
Yeah Heff shoulda won as did Penrith. Kelly def got lucky. But even if ISU loses those two matches Cyclones still win title by a few points as the ended up winning by 25 team points
Heff had wrestled a dual meet vs Krieger earlier in year and was ridden relentlessly by a brutal leg ride, could not get away and took tremendous punishment. He didn’t want to go underneath Krieger in NCAA Finals and gambled that he could score one takedown.
The ref that was officiating the match may argue Kreiger was wrestling defensively. Kreiger wasn't aggressive, moving forward, but he was a defensive style of wrestler. Wait for opponent to make mistake or poor shot then capitalize/scramble. Steve Harmon, you had same opportunities to earn an appointment from NCAA to work as an official. You should have, I guess. The criteria were set up back then to reward OFFENSIVE wrestling. That's why 1st or most escapes were 5th in criteria, after takedowns(2), back points(3), and reversals (4). We all have opinions on the internet, back then the refs opinion was the only one that mattered!
neither iowa st guys were offensive, it was like 40-1 iowa to iowa st shots, should have been tons of stalling calls and pts for iowa, not to mention other legit takedowns that were robbed by terrible officiating
Jeff Reese from NY (Elmira Southside HS) was a spladle master. NY State champion who's life was cut short while sucking weight for a match in college (Michigan). Great guy, knew him and his brother my whole life. Amazing wrestler. RIP
these refs were horrible, penrith took like 20 shots to 0 kelly, should have been couple of stall points easy...penrith wins 1st bout in regulation....around 18:22 hefernan clearly has a takedown, both men are in bounds, what is ref calling? hef had 1-2 other td's also, then about 2pts in stalling easy, and at least 2-3 fleeing mat calls, he should have won in regulation also....but on another note, didnt really see any setups for shots for iowa, just open shots, so gibbons game plan was no shots for iowa st, stall, and sprawl, tire them out and hope for the best....it worked this day with horrible officiating....still cant get over both men in bounds and ref calls hefernan and kreiger out...
Winning two NCAA titles with one spladle... a masterpiece
Bill kelly was my high school coach great guy, coach, and a great individual glad you were my coach at East Chicago Central
Bill was an awesome wrestler.
did you go to de la salle?
Jim Lampley. Had no idea he was once connected to wrestling. A real gem to Boxing.
he does what pays him
Can't believe Bloomsburg finished 5th back in 87'!
They had some tough guys back in the day Bonomo was the man.
I gotta look into it I never Bloom finished that well! I know Stutsman did a good job bringing the program back up. But they have been on a nasty decline for a while now, would like to see them compete at a high level like that again.
When did they go DIII?
Bonomo brothers won like 37 NCAA Titles between the two carrying Bloomsberg on their shoulders. 🙃
that was the best fucking spladel I've ever seen
Jim Lampley?!

You are a loser.
This was held at Cole Field House in College Park, MD!
Wrestlings really evolved since this
Jacob Toledo how?
We uses to say the same thing when we watched film from the 60's. lol
Greg idk watch some more college wrestling dumbass

Miss these days.
Did thy use to have breaks? Considering how it'll cut to commercial or how in the 150 bout after regulation time they both walked to their coaches
Prior to OT they did have a short break
Good ol times right?
Too bad there is not a video of the full finals. There was a good match of Peter Yozzo pinning Pat Santoro. John Smith's excellent first victory.
Christopher Fortunato well they just weren’t able to do that back then
I think Heffernan benefitted from some stall calls because Gable, just by his presence, affected the ref.
I don't, he was in on shot after shot.
20 years of Iowa referee bias. So glad that era is over

That scramble was incredible even by today's standards.
Is there an age cut off for collegiate wrestling in the states? Some of these fellas appear to be a lot older.

I remember Rico from Mount Saint Joe
Lampley said over and over again that Gibbons was 24 years old but he was actually 27....
"Stopped Short Of The Magic X"
Krieger was running away the whole time
Refs missed the fleeing the mat call, the takedown and the stalling. Heff ripped off totally.
RUNNING!!!

Heff got robbed!!! But, I can't believe he picked neutral in the 2nd o.t.

Bro I'm not a ref but the second match here the Iowa state guy fucking fled the mat at least 3 times.
Agreed 100% I was at that match live and thought he should have lost.

Slick way to get your man off top. Did you see how he was twisting the Iowa wrestler ankle at 5:21 when h was cranking 3/4 and had legs in.
That week ass shit for 150lbs match would never fly today... there would have been 4 or 5 stalling calls, and a takedown awarded to Iowa's wrestler.
stop
Who is ‘Bloomsburg’? Is ‘Bloomsburg’ just saying wrestling is for nobodies?
Spladle= pin every time

Spladled in the finals. Embarrassing... I'd rather lose any other way.
