Is it only me that is seeing the following: If the lowest root note (by fret numbers not sound) is on the e-string it is an e-shape, if it is on the d-string it is a d-shape and so on. The only exception is that if we have it on the b-string it is a c-shape (but that is only because the b-string always behaves quirky by a semi tone...haha). Think about it.
Correct! That's a solid visualisation. I have another lesson coming soon which expands on this further.
@@rickysguitar Looking forward to this. I made a video on my channel where I visualize the pentatonic boxes with Lego and reduce the boxes to a couple simple rules so I can even get rid of the concept of boxes. Feel free to check it out.
I was going to ask the same question....there's no C string!
@@samb759 That is correct. As I pointed out the only exception is the b string where you play the c shape. The b string acts always funny by a semi tone so semi tone from b is c. There you go.
@@rickysguitar Brilliant! Very interested in your next lesson too! Can‘t wait frankly 🎉😂
Thx for all your effort!
Still dont get it, your first box notes are all A not E 🤷🏽♂️
All the circled notes are A. The lesson is spot on dude. Maybe you need this one before you get it. ruclips.net/video/5AcPayDKGgg/видео.htmlsi=Ob3UYBltBvznY42l
I love ALL the visuals you do! Paterns are easier to understand ESPECIALLY since they are all so repeituve! 👍🏻❤👏😉 Thanks!
Sorry to say but even after watching your video I still don't know where to play my solos...
Might be a step ahead of where you’re at. You need to watch some of my other videos
@@rickysguitar maybe you said it and I missed it but I am guessing the idea is that underlying scale pattern will work with the corresponding "chord shape"?
That’s it.
Nice one Ricky........another direct hit , my ignorance is slowly weakening, keep it up please and thanks again.
I bought the book and the ebook. Some of the best information I have on playing guitar. I highly recommend the book and Ricky's utube channel.
Dear Ricky, at first thank you for all the valuable lessons! I bought your book and am working my way through it. Could you please consider doing a couple of videos with easy 10 - 20 minute daily training exercises? I believe it would really help to have a guided practice routine in addition to the stellar lessons you already have provided.
All the best to you mate!
Great video man! The visuals are very helpful. Can you please do a next video to this where you combine the major and minor shapes on same frets? It will be great to see a visual of each of these 5 shapes and how the major and minor are combined in every shape.
It's actually very simple first learn the relative minor concept.
A minor scale is the relative minor of C major scale. That means C D E F G A B C
in case of major you start with C and in case with minor you start with A.
Shape 1 of A minor pentatonic (E shape) is the same as shape 1 of C major pentatonic (G shape).
In case of A minor you start on 5th fret forming the E shape scale and in case of C major you start with 8th fret forming the G shape scale.
try it out Good luck
Thank you Ricky for explaining the CAGED-System so clearly and transparently!! Now I finally understand the whole system!!
Man you are killing it with the videos lately. Every one of them has been a banger.
Excellent ! Light bulb ! Thanks🇫🇷👍🏼🙏🏻🍒
I only watch on my phone and I can’t see well enough to follow
This is the trouble I have understanding these shapes, Ricky. Most look nothing like the chord they're claimed to be. It feels like the highlighter markings are really arbitrary. As if you could draw any chord shape.and it would fit. I don't mean your explanations. It's the whole caged theory thing in general. I still see it as very abstract.
I hear ya Don. CAGED is really just a sequential framework of shapes. It's a visual map that aides transposition of triads through the voices of the guitar . Here's a video that keeps all the shapes in one position. I think the onscreen images might help in seeing what's going on. Notice all the shapes are derived from CAGED cowboy chord grips.

this help me a lot for the basic, very thanks! 🔥🔥
I think this would help me more if the paper was turned to mimic the way we actually see the instrument. I think I would be able to vision and remember the shapes more that way. Looking at the fretboard horizontally is how we actually see it, I think that would help more, for me anyway, what can I say, I’m a slow learner, but then again I’m just starting out at 61, you know the old saying, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Thanks for what you do.
Download the pdf, print it out and turn it 90 degrees 👍
@@rickysguitar yes, that is what if been doing
Turn your phone sideways
@@rickysguitar
I actually take a screenshot on the computer and turn it sideways, my old eyes see better on the computer plus I don’t have all that paper sitting around.
This was very confusing to me. I’m self taught, and whenever I try to learn this stuff, it’s like it reenforces how dumb I feel.
We're all self taught in some way or other. It's nothing to do with being dumb. I'm sure you're not. You have gaps and holes in your foundation knowledge so stuff like this has no context. You need to go back to basics. Fill in the holes and when you're ready, look at stuff like this. Don't be so hard on yourself. Have a great Christmas!
Great lesson, very clear and concise. Downloaded the PDF but when I clicked on the link to Amazon for the paperback book, the Amazon page says it is no longer available. Sad face.
Eyup Tony! Are you outside the USA? If so that's the issue. Baffling that Amazon would not redirect to the viewers country. Change .com to your country domain and you should get to the proper page. :) Thanks for supporting my channel 🎸
I don’t know enough to know what this is for or how to use it. Must not be for beginners.
My solos are better when I don’t think too much.
OK, now for some rocket science. man, you lost me 35 seconds into the video. god, i must be dumb.
Not dumb. Maybe you need some more pre requisite knowledge of the basics.
Hahaha havent got a clue what you are talking about?
Sometimes the technical stuff isn't as exciting as just learning licks but this is really good info. One thing i wondered about is a friend taught me on a 1, 4 , 5 blues progression to play the major scale in what you list as position 2 on the 2 chord and when you go to the 4 chord switch back to minor pentatonic position 1 as they reside on the same fret. It works but I was wondering if there is a way to expand on that or is that just the main "trick"? Also any videos on note choice when soloing and the 5 chord especially as you are only there for 2 bars.. Great video, you make the mundane exciting....
Eyup Matthew! Massive topic. Superimposition is how you get all the colours in your solos. I have a hybrid scale lesson coming up. I did a peek into it in this video here - How To Solo In A Dominant Blues Using Only 3 Strings

Although i know these " before i knew this' type videos will leave me still as wise as i was before, I'm still strangely drawn to them
It funny that CAGED is based on all major chords but some how some way some can manipulate it for minor chords.
I’m lost🎈
What are you struggling to understand? Take a step back. Learn the box patterns first individually.
I'm loving the mood music behind the shapes...!
Oh, and the lesson aint bad either!!!
Good way of explaining! tumbs up.
That's Am if your starting on the 5th fret of the low E string
I'm lost, because em on the first block is different from what I know
Imagine there is a capo at the fifth fret and look at the 2 note shape. What is it? The root note is A, that gives the chord its name, but the shape is an e minor chord.
Can you put another book out with all of this on ? It.s mint.
Damn that's crazy.
Oh I like boxes tho
Hard to see the detail…
Download the PDF . It’s free!
