I love when Kim’s in videos, it’s like the cherry on top of something you already enjoy lol
yeah totaly
Ha! Well said. Lovely couple
Sorry, 'family' now!
Right, i fully agree
Disagree.
I’m in LOVE with this game. I’m still not done but I want it to never end
That stings , right ? I mean , when a game is so good you don’t want it to end , but somehow you still want to finish it. It’s like a double edged sword.
Really? I found everything about Sea Of Stars to be generic and boring.
Combat, exploration, rewards, the story, animations, characters, skills….pretty much every aspect of the game was boring and not well thought out. Only fans of this are those stuck living in the past, because sea of stars is not a good game
@@thesmitty467i feel bad for you bro, the game is great
just finished it with true ending. what an experience!
@@necrosadotor a bad experience from a studio who has no idea how to make a good game 🤷♂️
Can't forget to mention mitsuda was the composer on Chrono trigger! He worked himself so hard he was hospitalized. Nobuo came in and helped finish the soundtrack at the end. Glad you guys are enjoying the game. It's a lot of fun from what I played in the demo.
You guys are so funny together. Kim talking about a side quest mechanic and saying "you know what you can use that for??" and then John almost rolling his eyes, going, yes... cooking hahaha
I'm about 15 hours in and this is exactly what I have wanted from a JRPG for years! Such a beautifully crafted game. The important part is, like you said, they did things that they didn't have to do. That attention to detail pays off so hard.
I agree it looks great. The combat is what is lacking for me.
@@mac1bcis crono triggers combat much better or different?
So you have wanted boring combat, generic story, lame skills, tediously easy combat and horrendous back tracking?
Sea of stars is a flop. It’s only for a niche audience and that Audience is minimal. Bad game by a bad developer who has never created a game worth playing yet
@@SWOTHDRAchrono trigger is better, a game that’s super old has faster and more smooth combat than this boring QTE tedious battle system that gets old after one fight.
@@SWOTHDRA I liked Chrono Trigger combat because your attacks got better and you got stronger over time. I don't see that here.
Mitsuda actually only did 10 tracks for the game. The vast majority of the music was done by Erik Brown. Its a testament to what an amazing job did that some people like you guys couldn't figure out which music was done by who. Mitsuda did great as usual with the little music he did for the game, but Eric deserves most of the credit.
My Sundays aren’t Sundays until a hcg video is uploaded
Absolutely love the game so far. Glad I backed the kickstarter. Excellent results so far!
Can’t wait for the physical copy! It’s a bummer they didn’t release a physical copy right off the bat
I know, it’s tough waiting for it. At least we know we’ll be getting the perfect version of the game once it does release!
Just got mine yesterday
The soundtrack to this game is just something else! The melodies burn into my brain 🧠!
I’ve never seen one of your reviews, but holy cow the chemistry between you two is off the charts. Y’all “interrupt” each other, but in a way that shows how excited you both are. You’re bouncing ideas off each other left and right with amazing energy. If I didn’t already have this game I’d go out and buy it tomorrow just based on how enthusiastic you are
This new wave of RPG of this type is amazing.
Last year I also played Chained Echoes, and it was just amazing
Chained echoes was amazing. Played it a few months ago and loved it
The story of chained echoes is one of the best in jrpf style games i've ever played, awesome game
Outstanding game! The mist and fog effect, the way it parts and reforms as you move through it... Love it.
I never heard of sea of stars until it came out and the 16 bit graphics made me buy it and im enjoying the hell out of it
Love your reviews Johnny and Kim is actually very insightful. Enjoy hearing your thoughts and always put the games you cover on my wishlist. Thanks for the content!
Thank you guys.
What an unexpected pleasure this game sounds to be. I'm in the same generation as you guys and really miss these types of games. I've tried a few of today's old school inspired, here and there, but nothing ever clicked. Plus, I just don't play video games like I used to.
After hearing y'all's review I'm really excited to give this one a go. I can't afford to purchase the the game, but just saw, today, that it was available on XB Game Pass. I'm going to download it today and give it a try.
When you compared parts of it to Chrono Trigger, it was, Hook, Line and Sinker for me. I could even hear the sound of the monsters and the battle theme from CT in my head. Such great memories.
Hearing the excitement and enthusiasm in y'all's voices when talking about it was just icing on the cake. And the graphics... The cherry on top.
Thank you guys for the amazing and honest review, as always.
I've loved your channel for yrs. Love revisiting.
A true love letter to the 16bit JRPG era. Loving Sea of Stars, what a msterpiece.
Love you guys, what a great year for gaming!
Good for you guys getting that recognition and confidence from the developer to sponsor the show....Happy for you Johnny
Great game. I often find myself playing it all the time when I'm off work, quite addicting. Never heard of this developer before but I'm pretty impressed with their work here
I just finished playing the first hour of this game and I am in love. The reason that hooked me in the most is how to combat mimics that of Super Mario RPG. If you are a fan of timed hits or timed defense, this is going to be SO up your alley. I can not wait to dive deeper into this game.
So, turn based but still exciting?
@@lucascoval828 indeed
Sea of Stars is honestly perfection. Way too good
@@nicholasnajibi3082maybe he has done that, and this game is also on their perfection list? What was the point of your comment?
It’s not perfection actually. It has flaws. Stop it
@@GeorgeZimmermenof course! Every game has flaws. But if it has everything OP is looking for in a game, then for them, it’s perfect!
@@nicholasnajibi3082the game is OK. But perfection? It doesn’t do anything new, it just does old stuff pretty well
@@nicholasnajibi3082 As someone who played ff7 when it came out and replayed in the switch, it’s a masterpiece for it’s time but it did not age well like chronno trigger for example, it’s clunky af but nostalgia’s strong.
Still your comment’s point is? You just go around telling people what they should like?
I'm 10 hours in. I'm in love with it. Just like I was with the messenger. As far as I'm concerned sabotage can't miss. And Eric, who did the music, has once again dropped an all killer no filler soundtrack.
This game is a big warm RPG hug
I backed this game, and it's living up to all expectations in my opinion. Sabotage absolutely succeeded in their goal of capturing the feel of games like CT (my favorite of all time) and Mario RPG, but obviously modernizing it. The soundtrack is also fantastic, can't wait to get my vinyl!
Yasunori Mitsuda and David Wise (of Rare/Donkey Kong Country fame) are easily my two favorite composers and seeing them on board with a project is a selling point for me.
David Wise didn't do any music for Sea of Stars, did he?
@@sillyskeleton He did not.
@@thesilverblack708I think they just mean if a game has one of their names attached, they’re on board.
Setting the bar pretty low as to why to buy a game for music HAHAHAHAH
Sea of stars is bad in every single area. Name something you like and I’ll give you points as to why it’s bad with factsz
@@thesmitty467 it has excellent graphics, music, a fun and engaging battle system, a simple and fun story, arguably the best fishing mini game of all time. Go ahead and prove me wrong. 🤷🏻
Was waiting for this review. This game is really good. I really hope this is a start of a good string of games from this company in this world.
Continuation instead of start, the Messenger was fantastic
Out if curiosity, does anyone happen to know if the physical copy is going to be in all stores (like gamestop)? Or is it something you NEED to preorder online?
I downloaded the demo of this game a while back but only got around to it a few days ago. Love the retro meets modern approach to this game. You can tell the developers did such a collaborative effort in making this game shine! I cannot wait for myself to download this game on switch. Love the energy you and Kim bring to this review and touching on a lot of not just the bigger elements that are inspired by bigger classic games but also the little details and sense of exploration the demo gave us a preview to. Keep up the good work. This is my first time seeing Kim in your videos and she has that same level of engagement and excitement around a video game or project she' supports! Yay! Music is 100% awesome.
The messenger proved that this studio is brilliant at world building and script writing and this game is even better. I hope the studio grows even bigger, they deserved it
The Messenger proved this studio can only make sub par to below average video games. And now they release sea of mediocrity and people really just make up excuses to play it lol
Nothing about the game is good
Name something and I can tell you more than one thing that’s wrong with whatever you wanna bring up
Sabotage is not in touch with reality they create miserable games.
@@thesmitty467 wow they killed your mom or something? XD
@@thesmitty467 Why are you going around basically copy and pasting the same message on comments of people who enjoy this game? Give your head a shake.
Ehh the writing kind sucks but there is nothing else like this so I might get it
@@greglyhoblit if you know anything about writing, you'd see how good the script is.
So hyped for the physical version!
Glad to hear a good review from you about this! There's been so many good games released lately but I might have to take a break from them to check this out lol
As someone who has been tired of a lot of rpgs feeling tedious and bloated this has been a great refresher. The dialog is fantastic.
Thank you both for a great review. Looking forward to a physical version, maybe even some other merchandise too.
This game brings me back to my childhood, which is very rare for a game to do. Absolutely glorious! 🥰
5:51-6:10 That music 😍
Great review guys!
Thanks for this, John and Kim! Man, i been waiting for this old-school vibe. Thanks for the video. It was awesome as always
Fantastic review! You’ve convinced me to pick this up! Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
You guys are amazing! Both of you! I am subscribing.
Great review, this is one of the most charming video games of all time imho. The Messenger was fantastic, and Sabotage really knocked it out of the park with this one!
Can't wait to see what they do next. I like the idea of all their games being in a shared universe, first thing that popped into my mind is a cool Road Rash style game in this universe or a shooter
@@robbykillsThat would be cool! Or even a 2D beat ‘em up style game with RPG elements in the vein of Guardian Heroes!
I checked out the demo on switch last night it's really good and the music is awesome! I wanna try the demo on ps5 now as well. Love your review you two are spot on. It's old-school with a beautiful newage twist. Thanx for the awesome review guys!!!
looking forward to getting into this
Love when you talk about music of game and composer. You know so much that good thank you for talk about him.
No you are winning dude not me. Love your videos keep up.
Takes me back to why I feel in love with video games. Great review.
have been looking forward to a review of this game from you and HAVE to add this is the BEST back and forth from you and Kim ive seen in a video, you guys always do a great job but this is the best ive seen!
Modern/retro perfection is what this game is! Glad you guys liked it!
I mean they got sponsored who knows if they like Really liked it .
@Mr100Rupees dude you must not know Johnny at all if you have to say this.
@@robardian3697 He is just reviewing a game on the internet should I really know him 😂
@@robardian3697 it's best to ignore people like this lol
@@Jakco808 You are funny 😁
Just bought the multi language physical edition for switch on play-asia!
I was blown away. It brought me back to the sense of wonder and intrigue about what this medium can deliver that I experienced the first time I played Chrono Trigger.
Sabotage did some very cool things, just in terms of the graphics, the deliver story beats that they couldn’t have done if they’d gone with 3d. Aside from a couple of times that either the lack of visual depth or my inability to jump platforms I was supposed to be able to jump (really, literally, a couple, maybe three), I had few frustrations with getting around.
It really required my attention, no reminders about what I was supposed to be doing, no hints, no mini map. Combat was pretty challenging at times, in a good way, even with the accessibility options.
I did wish I could toggle those in fights to either increase or decrease a challenge, and that access wasn’t potentially soft locked behind the prologue boss battle. Otherwise, really solid set of options there.
Really been looking forward to your review of this game! Wonderful video. Thank you, guys. All the best from Sweden 🙌🏻
I love your insightful honest reviews and think that you two are simply the best. Sea of Stars is a real treat for fans and newbies alike. Cheers from down-under (Australia).
Man I absolutely appreciate, and love this channel. I always find myself getting dragged down these days by a lot of negativity, but even WHEN you're being critical of something (unrelated to this video of course) you have this positive energy that is so infectious and makes me excited about the video games I love. Thank you for being you man.
Absolutely true. He finds the good in most every game regardless and it's nice to see.
Awesome video Johnny & Kim 😎!
Johnny! I know you don’t do sponsorships lightly, so I am glad you are getting noticed by some of these companies, and able to promote things you love! You deserve it!
Loving this game so much.
❤
Amazing video as always! loved having kim in it made the reveiw much better!!! keep up the great work :D
So glad this game wasn't a flop. I'll wait until the physical release, but God, I'm so hyped to play this.
Is there a physical version?
The look of the battles and that world map reminds me so much of Breath of Fire 3.
Is there a physical copy?
I'm loving this game! It's worth noting Mitsuda only did a few tracks. The vast majority of the soundtrack is Eric Brown
I just started playing this game last night and the first thing I noticed was the music. It's wonderful to listen to!
Such a good video ❤
The battle music is so BOSS
The music has been fantastic!
Awesome review! I’m holding off playing it until I get the physical copy but I cannot wait. The game looks phenomenal and a total throwback to the good ‘ol days!
The game ranks right up there with Chained Echoes! It is blowing my expectations away so far!
Glad you guys did a video on this. I have it ready to go once I'm done with starfield...right around the new year, I imagine.
I bought Sea of Stars for my Switch OLED and I adore this game. It has more than lived up to its hype. I expected it to be a good game, but I didn’t anticipate it being as phenomenal as what it is. All of the attention to the little details is beautiful but the game has a very thoughtful focus on characters and story, the relationships between them. And that is executed in a true to life kind of way. The combat is spectacular, the soundtrack is incredible. Sabotage hit it out of the park. There are so many small nods I see in game(or at least what I’m reminded of) from Chrono Trigger obviously, Lunar, Shining Force, Super Mario RPG…yet this game doesn’t use any of that as a crutch, it stands on it’s own and stands tall. I think this game could stand side by side with those legendary titles rather than be compared to them. And it looks so great even on a 65 inch tv, it just highlights all the details even more. Phenomenal game!
Pre ordered my physical copy yesterday on play Asia 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Great video! Just because I have to be that person… the most of the music from the game is composed by Eric Brown. Yasunori Mitsuda only composed about 10 tracks. I just want to give credit where it’s due because the soundtrack is amazing!
The overworld map gives me mega Chrono Cross vibes. Game looks gorgeous
I've only been able to put 5 hours into this (real life and a TOTK 100% run getting in the way) but i already know this is one of the best jrpgs of the last few years. The shear love and detail in there... awesome.
Love listening to you talk about games, guys, especially when it's a genre you're so fond of. Really perks my Sunday evening up
I'm over 40 hrs in and I'm just now going back to finish up side quests before the final boss. Really enjoying the game
I got Beyond Oasis art vibes from this along with Lunar and Shining Force/Phantasy Star portraits.
Awesome video!
Def going to have to get thos physical copy
You guys are really great on camera reviewing games together! It's an example of 1+1=3. That was awesome. You play off each other perfectly!
I plan on getting a physical copy
My highest compliment is my buddy. My best friend, who was and has been an FF6 and Chrono Trigger lunatic since we were kids, came to my house to demo this on GP.
He played for four hours straight then I had to kick him off for Starfield launch. He immediately purchased the Switch version (we both did to support the effort here) and if he thinks it nails it, I defer to him.
He’s old school RPG through and through, I am Daggerfall/Morrowind nut.
Love the old school RPG vibe 🎩
Very nice review man 🤘
Playing that right now
13:18-13:28 I can’t wait for the physical release of the game. 😊
PlayAsia Physical orders are shipped in December too if you don't feel like waiting for the western release. The game is multi - language and the box art is amazing
So is there a PC Engine version?
When I head Sabotage was making a jrpg style game, I was hooked. But I was sold after playing the first 5 minutes of the demo.
I haven't even played the game yet since I'm moving to a new place, but I bought it on day 1 so i can enjoy it once I settle down. Very excited to play.
Started it up yesterday, played for 7 hours straight and couldn't stop
Playing this on game pass and love this game. Mix of old and new with some new mechanics not seen on other RPGS
Bouncing between this starfield and Balders gate, Spider-Man 2 and Mario wonder are right around the corner, going to have to make games a full time job if I ever want to finish anything ever again.
This Review together has been the best🎉 good weekend!
This game has landed itself a spot in my top 5, possibly even top 3 games of all time.
I'm about to 100% this game once my shift's over, feels good.
I am with you on that, it also landed in my top 5, maybe even top 3 games.
I plan on getting the physical copy of this
oh wow, this is taking me back to the grandia series. we need more colorful games like this
I know a physical copy is coming, but I really wish it was available at launch
My backlog is huge this year!!! Sooo much to play what an amazing game year!!!
looks really great! thanks, you guys!
For the record, I think they said that mitsuda did like 3 songs in the development documentary. One field, one town, and one battle theme.
It's 10 tracks in total from what I've read.
@@razmatazz9310 oh dang. They made it seem like less. The music has been great regardless.
It released on my birthday and i almost forgot to play it. Waiting for it to download now!
Pumped to play this one. Think I might wait for the physical release in Jan.
I'll admit I was a bit worried this game would just be a pretty face, but I was heavily impressed with how much love went into the demo. I'm extremely hyped with Yasunori Mitsuda's inclusion! This year , man - this year is just unstoppable for gaming
I started it last night and now it's all I can think about while at work! Can't wait to get back to it tonight!
You didn't mention Yasunori Mitsuda did almost all of the soundtrack for Chrono Trigger.
Love this game!
