Hey David! I am the lead developer for SacriFire. Thank you so much for taking the time to cover our game. I wanted to pop in and say that your concerns are definitely valid. We need to do a better job on communicating the unusual nature of the battle system to the players. Things like the target selection, tutorialization and other pain points will be improved. Ultimately this is the purpose of this demo - to gather useful feedback and iterate on it. Clearly we have a lot of work ahead of us. Finally, the build you played is the newest one we have, warts and all ;)
the game looks amazing, Im following it since years haha, keep it up! and about the janky hard combat system, its not all that bad, just please dont end up making it too easy when balancing without a difficulty option :) and as long as it gets better while leveling up some jank the first hours of game is not that bad
Thank you so much for popping in, that means a lot to me! I do wish you the best on your game and I only said the things that I said in order to improve it :) I just want your game to be the best that it can possibly be
If you're looking for beta testers, I wouldn't mind to test the game for you for free. I was looking forward to this game for years, and I'm Polish so I can give you feedback in Polish if you like. Most of it would probably be about the combat system, since I think games like this live and die by their combas systems. Hit me up if you're interested.
I have played an early build that is a version after this build. Just to clarify some things, there is/will be a difficulty choice. The combat is very deep and takes time to get used to. The main game will teach/ease you into combat in a more organic way along with training that just wasnt doable in this demo. It took me some time to adjust to the combat as I have not played anything like it before, I really think they have put forward something new here. I am an item hoarder in my rpgs and the combat had me using my items and strategy to make it through. Once the combat clicks it really is quite rewarding, but it does take some time to get into it. The skill tree is really great and I love that we can change up and experiment at any time.
@@davidvinc i will clarify the difficulty was contained in two different builds, but there should be a difficulty option in the final game. I think this is a case where they tried to show a later portion of the game wherein the beginning tutorials would ease into things slower but might not be as exciting so they did it for the demo. I am a prefer turn based combat myself, so it took me a good amount of time to absorb the combat and that I had to think about my strategy. For example, I hate bullet hell and when those bullets were flying I started panic rolling and was easily annoyed. But with the stop and go mechanic and when I took a breadth I was easily able to avoid things and crushed the boss. Did you play the molig mania mini game? I am not a fan of most mini games, but really enjoyed this one.
😆 🤣 😂 @not everything has to be a dark soul difficulty. Completely agreed. Nowadays, if there's an easy mode, I'm all for it, but then again, we're pretty old now.
I backed this game and enjoyed the backer demo but let's not use "spiritual succesor" or "the next of" that seems to set up a lot of unreasonable expectations that lead to bad impressions. I think its good to go with "takes inspiration from" better
I enjoy your critiques, you certainly don’t pull your punches, even when it comes to previews. I’m still excited to see where this will ultimately go, it certainly looks exciting. I’m sure your video will go a long way towards improving this game. Oh and the music playing through the video is fire! Great job as always David!
I've had my eye on this one, and yes, it definitely looks pretty! But it doesn't sound like it plays as well as it appears which is a shame, so I'm unsure if I'll pick it up in the end 😅
I don't really see a problem with character portraits, personally, don't really think much about that. If I do, then I like to kind of imagine a sort of anime-esque scene of what's going on. Something I will agree with you on is the NPCs. I hate when there are clearly NPC characters in the map, but you can't interact with them. They're window decorations. I'm so glad someone else is saying this.
Eh I don't see what the big deal is. it's no different than the background NPCs in Persona or Final Fantasy 7 Remake or similar games. Tokyo Mirage Sessions, though in that game the ones who can't interact with are colored silhouettes. It helps the game world not feel empty while not overwhelming you with 700 NPCs that don't have anything to say.
@@sor3999 I dislike it because it's just clutter on the screen. You don't want the game world to feel empty, but it breaks immersion by bringing a feeling of not being a part of the game world. So no, it doesn't help it feel less empty. It just makes the player feel removed.
David, you have such charisma and I love how passionate you are about the games you cover. Your videos have become “must see” events everyday for me. I could literally watch you all day. 😉 This game looks very interesting. I haven’t heard of this one before. I hope we get a physical version for Switch. The “rough edges” you mention will hopefully get worked out. Only time will tell… Speaking of time, CHRONO TRIGGER! It’s about time (pun intended) this one drops for Switch. If you have any contacts with the people at SquareEnix, put a bug in their ear, will ya? Thanks for all you do for us. I can’t wait to see more of your videos.
I enjoy your critiques, you certainly don’t pull your punches, even when it comes to previews. I’m still excited to see where this will ultimately go, it certainly looks exciting. I’m sure your video will go a long way towards improving this game. Great job as always David!
I also hope your feedback is taken into consideration. This was one of the indie RPGs I had my eyes on. I normally play games for the story, but a good gameplay is what gets me interested in a game in the first place. It's like story = personality and gameplay = physical attraction, if I was to make a comparaison.
Hoping the battle system can be improved upon for the final game. I like the idea of dodging attacks, but if the enemies get unavoidable attacks as well that can be too much. You may not remember, but the original Star Ocean had a similar issue where you had to press attack and select an enemy before attacking them even if they were right in front of you, meaning that half your button presses accomplished nothing and it was easier to just mash attack.
I hope they’re watching taking notes from you and fans of the OG games, I genuinely hope they produce a solid game! And a physical copy for consoles! 😊
I think this game looks great. For me, it's got the beautiful art style, I like the character portraits and the surroundings. The combat does look a bit difficult/complicated, but i'd still buy it and give it a go 😊 Thanks for discussing this game, David. I look forward to keeping an eye on it 😊
How unfortunate about the battle system. Id assume being beta its far to along to just scrap it and restart lol. What would they need to do to improve itm
This is an opinion from someone who hasnt played this game at all nor knows much about it but this looks pretty top notch. I would have to personally try the battle system to give an appropriate take but it looks like it could be fun. I definitely dont like the character portraits as they dont match the game and I'm also hoping for more NPC interaction as that seems like something the game should definitely have more of (which I presume it will...I hope). I cant find any data to show any sort of physical release, even in the kickstarter and thats unfortunate and will likely keep me from buying it. I hope that changes. Great coverage David, well done!
I agree with the portraits. I think we just dont like the style portraits usually are. If you look at our beloved games like ff6...those portraits are quite different but we love em.
I completely agree about combat difficulty. It seems like so many games, especially indie games, really want to lean into punishing and difficult combat. Whether it's a Souls thing or an NES thing or whatever, it's almost never well balanced or enjoyable.
'It's like VP!' Me: Yeah! 'Combat sucks...' Me: Oh... oh no! God damn it, I was looking forward to this game for years now. I hope they fix the combat system, because I really want this game to be good.
I wonder if you're only going to have the 1 character the entire game or if there's a party. And if there is a party, how the hell is that going to work with this battle system??
I'm surprised about the potrait art criticism. I personally love that as I love the pixel art, but getting to see them hand-drawn adds extra depth to how I see the characters. I saw it as complimentary rather than clashing.
This looks interesting but I'm not really much in to 2D RPGs. I played the first Valkyrie Profile for a few hours but it didn't really grab me. I also gave Exist Archive a shot but got the same result.
I think doing hand drawn graphics is just easier and more time effective, also more people could do it well compared to pixel art on large scale images. That's why they do it for portraits.

Indivisible was great, exist archive was ok but for some reason it would crash for me a couple of hours into a dungeon randomly, it happened multiple times and eventually I had to put it down which I rarely do with games.
Indivisible is an OK Metroidvania with a watered down version of VP's battles tacked on. They're a slog and without the depth or almost any of the underlying RPG elements it really doesn't work well. Still worth playing if you're into MVs though.
@@espfusion I disagree, Valkyrie profiles battle system wasn't any harder than indivisible and is almost identical in it's approach to it, both games provide a decent level of challenge in terms of coming out on top, aside from indivisible having more platforming elements that Valkyrie profile lacks they are similar games, indivisible just has more than one way to scale an environment and Valkyrie profile has a more in depth levelling and equipment system, either way the games function similarly.
