Cutscene before Mission 1 - Resurrection
    === == = == ===
Walker (Paul Darrow): Sit down, Church. There's something you don't know about the Antaeus cruisers, information that only a handful of people have ever been privy to, and that's been kept classified for the past twenty years.
    Church (Glynis Barber): I'm listening
    Walker: You've heard of Soulcatcher?
Church: Classified 1990s American military program? Theoretical research into storing human brain functions on silicon. It was closed in the late 90s to make funds available for the advancement of the SETI programs.
Walker: Mostly correct. But it was never closed, far from it. Every crew member on an Antaeus vessel was fitted with a Soulcatcher chip. If they ever died in combat, their thoughts, their abilities, their minds were stored on silicon. Ready to be salvaged and used again to pilot a specially adapted craft built using the cruisers onboard nano-factories.
    Church: Christ...
Walker: Thats not all. The Soulcatcher system proved fine for most tasks, but it was crucial that the captain of a cruiser should always be corporeal. A real human with a real mind. This presented the scientists and technicians with a problem. The chips could survive being inactive for years on end, but how could a human be stored? How could they put a human being in stasis? The answer, unfortunately, was that they couldn't.
    Church: So who-?
    Halsey: Walker.
    Walker: Sir.
    Halsey: Church.
    Church: Sir.
Halsey: Have you finished your briefing yet, Walker?
Walker: No sir, I was just...
Halsey: It'll have to wait. I've just heard from Central, and the news isn't good. Of the reactivations, only one has been successful. Antaeus Prototype 00.
    Walker: What about 04?
Halsey: Cerebral damage. It wont respond to the reactivation signal. Well have to go with just the one cruiser. It's within a day of the SpecOps team, and is in a serviceable condition.
    Walker: When you say serviceable...?
Halsey: Propulsion is online. Command is online. The net link is working. Scanners are online. The main guns are down. Replication is offline. Automated lifting is offline.
Church: How much can be repaired using the nano-repair systems?
Halsey: Ah, providing were careful? Enough to hold the ship together. Until we can get it to a disused wet-dock, situated 65 kilometers east of the current position. A Minitech repair team is being dropped into the area at 2300 hours today. They're going to stay concealed, until the cruiser is within an hour of the wet-dock. Just in case were being observed. They'll then activate the automated service systems and dock the carrier.

If salamander is made from an adapted version of an experimental hovercraft made by the Cabal that we steal a couple of missions later, what is it doing in this hologram presentation? Hmmmm 🤔

Being a continuity error in background detail.

I liked it >: And it's not that the player is alive: They explicitly say the player could not be a real human, but yet must be a real human. So there is all kinds of fridge horror as to what kind of abomination the player character is!

Brain in a jar, likely. Instead of neurons on a chip, or likely a living corpse. Comatose. Body is dead, brain is alive, still sending signals. In fact the head of Central even states why Antaeus unit 04 didn't activate: Cerebral Damage.

so DEFINITELY NOT the plot then. They actually thought having the player alive was a significant plot point? This exposition dump... IT BURNS.

I think you're referring to Church going "Christ..." under her breath

but none of the characters ever experience any kind of existential crisis over the fact that they're just simulated pilots. So it doesn't really play into the game at all.
Though to be honest. My comment isn't clear. I really meant the execution of the plot, not the plot itself. The plot isn't too bad, particularly compared to other releases around that time.
