To be honest, I wouldn't consider the stuff Steven and the Gems are capable of as some form of magic...at least, not in the typical sense. When I think of magic, I imagine powerful sorcerers or god-like beings commanding the mystical forces of the universe with a thought. As for the Gems, they just harness the light energy of their stones to do what they need. The only Gem I can think of whose powers CAN be seen as magical is Rose and her healing powers

You're underestimating the Diamonds. We just don't ever actually see them fight. Remember that all Gems have their powers derived from the essence of the Diamonds, so it's reasonable to assume that all gem powers are directly copied from them, or emerge from the combined essence. Lapis is a gem purely of Blue's court. So we have no reason to assume Blue also can't manipulate water similarly to her.

The difference between a diamond and other gems is the raw power it has. The reason Pink developed so many powers and later steven did the same, to a point he was powerful enough to shatter Jasper, shows that the problem is not that Blue is Weak, it's that she relied on her latent abilities without allowing herself to grow. And once she stoped feeling sad, she just flipped sides. That doesn't mean her only power is making people sad with her aura, or use her aura to make people happy, she literally can use her aura to shot tons of rays at others. The Diamonds are also suggested to be made by consuming entire body of planets, their gem are very dense and strong, and no one truly knows if it's possible to shatter a diamond either. Lapis was made for terraforming, but her anger just turned her own powers into something more latent, and her time with Jasper made her realise how to focalize all that anger into power. But at the end of the day, the only thing lapis can do, is to take water, and control to an extreme level, but she can't change her powers. I think that's what's the Diamonds wanted to actually say when they mentioned each gem has a specific duty, and I think it's more related to their power. If Yellow, Blue and White were so less strict and more open to changes, there's a chance they would develop other powers besides the complete opposite of what they did: Yellow could shatter gems, now she can stabilize them even fi they are shattered. Blue could make everyone sad, but now she can force you to be happy. White could control everyone, now she can let everyone control her. Pink was considered useless, so she became the most versatile diamond. She could Scream and it would break everything, she reversed that to become composed and calm, but in the end, the sheer level of power she has in the end is jut she learning to control her powers and understand how strong a Diamond is. Diamonds give live in the story of Steven Universe, Pink was the sole one who understood this better than the others, to a point she created the pebbles, she learned her powers could be used in organic beings such as Lion, and she even learned how to use her power to create a pocket dimension, she first did it with Lion, then she did it with her room. Note how Pink's rooms in the Gem's temple is different and unique. It's a room that exists solely to do anything she wants, I believe the sole reason the temple can exist is because Pink used some of her diamonds powers to create it overall. But more than that, notice how any new Crystal Gems can't have a Temple room anymore. That knowledge died with Pink, Anyway, I'm not saying Lapis is weak, I'm just saying she would defeat Blue is a bit out of question, not because she's weaker than blue but more because a Diamond is stronger and harder than other gems, even Yellow suffers to poof Blue when she tried, and notice how Lapis got instantly poofed by touching Yellow's rays of electricity, while blue could not be unstabilized at all by it, not as easily. That's all there is to it. Blue just need to step on Lapis, and her gem would crash. After all, her gem cracked by having another simple gem stepping on it.
I also feel like Pink/Rose's want and willingness to change allowed her to explore her powers to their fullest. White, Yellow, and Blue can only do so much because while they certainly changed, it's not an integral part of their personalities. This is also why Steven became so "OP" because a humans natural state is change so it makes sense he could condense Pink's power expansion into such a short time

My head canon on how the magic system works is similar to yours to be fair, I agree that if The Diamonds were forced to be in more compromising situations they would also develop even more powers like Steven and Rose but the point is if Lapis fought Blue Diamond right now, as in ASAP, could Blue Diamond realistically defend herself? I just don't think so. We know that not even the three Diamonds working together could do *anything* to restrain Steven but Lapis using just her water chains could. Maybe the Diamonds are too durable to be shattered through normal means but Pink Diamond "faking her death" and getting away with it implies that the other Diamonds believe that they could be shattered by getting hit with a strong enough sword. 😁
Yeah Steven universe doesn’t dearly care about consistency in its power scaling one minute Pearl can fight someone who can level mountains a side fly and react to lighting bolts and the next connie a human can press her

Four gods exist, three are so strong they never train or grow and exist in ease. The weakest god learns to master their powers finding every tiny nuance within. The weakest god aka Steven/pink diamond would be the strongest. What I mean is that the other diamonds have more potential than Steven but will never find that power making Steven the strongest. It’s more of a theory I’ve always had to explain it
It's genius and accurate, the one time in history that we know about when the other Diamonds were forced to reevaluate their way of life, they all developed brand new powers like Steven have been doing throughout the series whenever he needed them unlocked. It explains a lot, A+ fam. 😁

Each Diamond also discovered their destructive sides first before realizing they had more constructive ways to use their powers. Which is true for Pink Diamond as well, we just learned about her story in reverse, where we saw her best self first.

Gemstones also feed off of light and require light to materialize a form, so you can tire a gem out by "starving" them of light, which is what most likely the tower Pink was being locked in was meant to do: starve Pink out so she'd be too tired to be emotional.

Gems have moods and they can be emotionally and mentally drained, but physically they have infinite stamina. i remember being so hyped during earlier seasons because i thought “if the gems are this powerful already, what kind of power does the diamonds have” then being disappointed because they’ve become so weak despite how they were portrayed as the strongest earlier in the season.

I feel like they stepped away from magic aa time went by and leaned more into the science aspect. Some of the tech and tools in s1 was absolutely BROKEN, like time travel??? By s5 it seemed more like everything was super high tech and just superpowers
Yeah, the gems themselves aren't even magic-- just really fancy tools. They can't cast spells or anything (other than summoning their weapon) And in era 2, tech was able to compensate for the gems' lack of innate power.

I think it has to do with the era's. In peridots episode, Too Short To Ride, she mentions how "they just don't make gems like they used too" Era 1 gems can shape shift and they have all sorts of powers, while era 2 gems can't shapeshift and have little to no powers, so they use technology to make up for it. I think in Era 1 they did use more magical things, and in era 2 they switched to technology for efficiency. the beginning of the show focuses on earth more, and all the gem stuff on earth was from era 1 so it had a more magical vibe then as the show went on they shifted their focus to homeworld, and homeworld was in era 2, so it had more technological vibe.
First off, our lapis is definatly stronger than your average lapis, as shown in SU future, but blue diamond is still stronger and more durable than the entire ocean. Lapis is a conditional gem, in a planet filled with water like the earth, she thrives in power, but in a planet like homeworld with none water seen so far, the only thing she has going for her is the natural small portion of water she can summon with her wings. And we literally saw lapis fighting against blue diamond, and she lost?!?! what is even the point of the discussion?? there is no "prime" lapis, she doesn't age, her powers don't change, as long as her gem isn't cracked, she is in her "prime" so, yes, blue diamond does win, in every single scenario

Not only stronger emotions she was powerfull bc she was willing to use her powers in various purpose while the diamonds only use for control and egoistical reasons.
To put it simply, the three Diamonds are basically all Friezas, all three of them never, EVER had any reason to train or get stronger, like Frieza, until they finally had to deal with someone STRONGER than them. Their shit was bound to get wrecked at some point, anyways.
I noticed the diamonds barely use their power, only just a small fraction of it, if anything at all. They use just enough power/magic to defeat the gem they’re fighting, or they think it is enough. I think if they use their full potential it would be a lot more devastating. Blue was seen using a bit more, when she used those lasers when fighting the crystal gems. All yellow diamond does is poof gems with her power. Blue diamond makes everyone said (extra: the lasers), and white only controls gems. This is ALL we have seen them do. Someone also pointed out how their bodies are also more stronger and durable than your average gem. Also that person pointed out how pink had multiple powers, which I have thought of a long time ago. The diamonds powers have a bad side, and a good side. We see this in the Future season, where they all use their powers for good. But they still BARELY did anything. I blame this lack of information on Rebecca sugar. If only we could see more.
The ONE time they used their "full" power, it corrupted the gems. And it's been stated if Pink helped the gems would've been shattered Also, blame it on the steven-only perspective. Interesting thing about roses room: I also took her use of endless void of soft pink clouds to reflect on her desire to feel truly free to be herself unseen as rose or pink diamond and explore her own wants comfortably while on earth away from the diamonds rule and because usually she was locked in a tower w only a little window to look out of and now she has a whole blank open space to just vent and let out whatever she needs to p cool
i think alot of people misunderstand why lapis is so busted. most planets dont actually have much water on them, earth is like 70 percent ocean so a hydrokinesis gem like her would be INSANE on earth because of the sheer volume of water she has access to, but the most we really see her do against a diamond is restrain them. she is not beating blue, def not yellow, and definitely not white or steven. blue was eating destabilization lightning for a long time and still didnt get poofed, while lapis literally gets oneshotted and poofed in her flashback by a regular bismuth punching her. yellow can poof gems by poking them really hard what is lapis realistically gonna do? shes not beating blue by any means, even if she keeps distance blue has ranged magic attacks, and i doubt lapis is realistically doing anything at close range also the fact even gems as OP as lapis or any of the many corrupted gems with crazy worldbending abilities STILL look up to the diamonds like gods just shows how little of their power we truly see for the pearl sandbending thing, i we only ever see her do that on a tiny scale so its kinda brash to assume she has full on Psammokinesis and can fully manipulate it like the dessert gem garnet's stretchy arms would definitely have come in clutch in a lot of circumstances though, but shapeshifting DOES use a lot of energy so theres that i guess
The Bismuth that poofed Lapiz was our Bismuth and Lapiz was off guard. Lapiz is was stronger thrn every crystal gem besides Steven, Alexandrite and Obsideon.
Also not to mention how much raw physical strength the diamonds have, they could literally just walk into something and break it, yellow especially is quick from that one episode we saw when she stomped steven.
The power system really is confusing, in I Am My Monster, the Diamonds COMBINED couldn't restrain Steven but LAPIS by herself can? And I don't know why Steven is the strongest gem. Shouldn't it be White Diamond? BTW, great video!
The diamonds tried one single thing each, and one that would obviously not work. Yellow tried forcing Steven to appear to be okay, to try to revert him back to being human. Of course it's not gonna work, his shapeshifting powers are gonna turn him into a monster again. Blue tried to force him to being happy, but he's already shown in human form to be able to resist the influence of the clouds, of course now that he's having a mental breakdown they're not going to help. White tried to enter his mind, but he was in a corrupted state, his mind wasn't anything like Steven's, and if she tried to keep controlling him, she would probably end up corrupting herself, too. Lapis only grabbed Steven with water, the diamonds didn't try to hold Steven in place.
Lapis in her prime didn't have nearly the same amount of trauma she does now and her trauma is what allowed her to shrug off Blue Diamond's ability... In, may I remind you, the most badass scene of the entire show!
there are Gem's with powers that you'd think could topple a diamond, but you have to remember all the Diamonds have powers that can just shut down other gems. Say you have one of those op gems that control matter, Yellow will instantly poof them, Blue forces them to submit with emotion, and White forces her own will onto it, and all together they can nuke a planet. Lapis was only able to resist blue because she went through centuries of pain,so i imagine you need alot of physical resilience to resist Yellows attack, or mental fortitude to fight off white's influence. It is funny tough that gems have this arbitrary hierarchy, despite many of the lower gems being way more powerful than those up top. I guess thats the point though.
My theory is that Steven being part human made his growth as a gem skyrocket. Gems, as opposed to humans, can't really select their job and powers. What I mean by this is that maybe his human genes broke whatever kind of limit Pink Diamond had in the past. Creating a shield became (almost) energy constructs. Whatever ability she had of healing became so potent that it can repair cracked Gems. Also, since Steven's form isn't made of the energy that makes the solid shape of normal gems the extra energy that would have been used to make a completly solid body, both inside and out, wouldn't have been wasted by it being active all the time and maintaining such a big form like a that Diamonds' So all that energy that would have been wasted just became extra power ups that Steven can (seemingly) create when it's required for his survival.

My personal headcannon is that Steven is the most powerful Diamond, that each Diamonds ability centres around manipulating an aspect of gems in general, Blue - emotions, Yellow - physical form, White - mental state & Pink which I think can manipulate whatever passes for a gems soul, you said the story of the glass ghost is basically what happens after death which has connections to ghosts/souls. Also love the ghost sound effect, that's awesome.
To be fair with lapis, with how freaked out Paradot was with rain it’s safe to assume gems aren’t around water much. On earth she may be the most powerful but there’s not that much liquid water in the universe comparatively.
I think there's an important fact that gets overlooked a lot: a gem's ability is strongly linked to mental and emotional constitution. tons of examples of distracted gems accidentally canceling their abilities, unstable emotions causing spikes in energy at the sacrifice of clarity of form (corruption). that may come off as narrative contrivance, for the sake of the plot, but it's consistent with Gems as Beings of Light and Thought made manifest. Emotions and Introspection dictate appearance, two thoughts can combine in synthesis to create a new idea and relationship (fusion), and a powerful enough idea can shake your worldview and. change your mind anyway, Spinel is the most powerful gem, provided that the animators have an infinite budget. she's this universe's Pinkie Pie, or Monkey D. Luffy, because she has the power of Cartoons, in an animated medium
Sometimes I forget how broken characters in this show are outside of Steven, like you're telling me Lapis while cracked can casually manipulate all the water in earth's ocean.
It feels far simpler than it looks, the diamonds "hatched" from the core of a star. They ARE the megacompressed core of a star. Sentient Beings with a continuously renewable thermonuclear reactor in their chests, if they couldn't bend local reality to their whim i'd be surprised, but they lacked outside-the-box thinking in all their 20 thousand years except Pink and everyone under her influence of new ideas. Its hard to imagine what any gem is truly capable of with the right intent. I like the "there are no rules" approach personally
HOLD IT *slams desk* Steven could still die if he feels old, so if he does live longer than humans do and suddenly feels the years, then he WILL feel the years and idk die? The gem could supply energy like a power bank, but it can't power a tired old shell he was dieing with the gem as he got older when he first had hijinks(control of power which could be sharpened but also dulled so it could happen)

id argue that as long as steven stays mentally strong, he wont die. he is capable of healing himself unconsciously, and as his body deteriorates in old age, his gem would probably just heal it (i could also imagine this puting strain on his abilities, but idk, hes pretty powerful, maybe it wont) also he is capable of rasing the dead, but i dont know if he could raise himself from the dead. one way it could go is his gem keeps him alive untill he lets himself die, he lives for so long that he goes insane and can no longer regulate his powers, to the point were nothing is keeping him alive, or he does die or come very closw to death, and his gem automatically resurrects him.
You make a lot of great points, especially the parts where gems showcase a random power that's never used again, but I think the video as a whole is forgetting the main difference between Steven (as well as the other crystal gems) vs homeworld gems. For all the gems that haven't spent any significant time on earth, it's their entire culture and order to only do exactly as they were built to do. They're more like highly advanced robots instead of people, so even though their abilities are CAPABLE of improvement, they don't actually improve because they're not "supposed" to change, they're supposed to just work "right out the box" so to speak. I assume it's much easier and more efficient to work as an army if everyone's exercising as little personality as possible. Of course Steven is stronger than the Diamonds because Pink became Rose Quartz and had to fight her OWN army while heavily outnumbered. Diamonds on paper are the strongest gems sure and they're extraordinarily durable, but she still had to push her own limits and improve herself over thousands of years to even the odds, while Pink's soldiers were just going through the motions. A battle of Quality vs Quantity. And then Steven had to get just as creative when learning to handle the powers he inherited. After all that training while the other diamonds sat around delegating, it's only natural that Pink (and therefore Steven) would become the strongest of them all. Similarly, of course Lapis can easily hold her own against Blue diamond. She's OUR Lapis. Her entire backstory makes her immune to the one significant power that Blue has, and the sad part is? Diamonds are just so inherently stronger than other gems that despite all the crazy hydrokinesis, Blue could just slap her and she'd poof (keep in mind Yellow poofed a Zircon with her finger one time), so the only real question is how long it'll take Lapis to miss a dodge? And nevermind what would happen if all the other collective Lapis fought against her, she'd just use her cry ability and they'd all collapse like everyone else did. Once again, personal experiences (plus a really good matchup) come into play. Now, I'm not gonna say the show has a clarified magic system cuz, well, it doesn't. The way Gems work alone is too far beyond science fiction to really have any kind of "system" to it. But I will say this: Gems are born with abilities, some stronger than others, and then with time, effort and dedication, they can grow and become stronger, gaining new abilities. Every gem has immediate powers and latent ones, and the gems that seem "stronger" than they should be are, more often than not, exercising those latent powers. But they only get them when they make the effort to do so. Jasper never made an effort beyond slamming her head into rocks as training. She never adapted and kept blaming all her losses on fusion, so she kept losing to gems that were supposed to be weaker, even when fused. The other Lapis' never made an effort to learn anything other than terra forming, so that's all they're good at. They COULD do some great damage with their attacks, but they couldn't possibly have the sheer will and resilience it takes to stand up to blue diamond like our Lapis did. The diamonds never once made an effort besides delegating tasks to underlings, especially once they thought Pink was shattered. They figured they could just beam the planet and be done with it. So they eventually lost to Steven, a full fledged diamond who's fully realized his latent abilities. So it does make sense, kinda, you're just forgetting to include the individual in the conversation.
I mean the big thing about the diamonds is that thier powers allowed them to control other gems, white basically could puppet them blue would make most gems unable to move and weep with her. yellow could destabilize gems with a thought. pink was an outlier, but seemed to have a sense of command over gems, making them become friendlier to her. all put together it makes sense that the diamonds ruled, even without world destroying capabilities. I'm a little sad that the idea of each gem having a weapon was dropped at some point, it would have been cool seeing the weapons some of the -kenesis gems wielded or even the diamonds.
Well since the Gems are are actually Aliens they don't really need a Magic System because they basically have Super Powers & not Magic Spells or anything like that, But in all seriousness Steven Universe had great concepts, but wasn't executed very well, I mean the audience couldn't be made aware of anything unless Steven was made aware of it(which would work out well for the First Season or for a Movie, but Not for the Entire F*-_ing Series), the Storytelling, World Building & Character Development for everything/one Not Steven didn't reach it's true potential(unlike Adventure Time which did well with everything outside of Finn & Jake), and because the series got cancelled too soon the 5th Season felt too rushed like they were trying to cram two seasons worth of story into the last half of the final season, and Future was mostly just Steven going through PTSD & trashing his Mom for how she started out as instead of admiring her for how she ended up as, Honestly I seriously hope this Franchise gets Rebooted so that it can have many of the OG's biggest mistakes corrected for the better.
The biggest edge lapis has over blue Diamond is her trauma, as she showed when she yeeted the barn at blue, blues pain is nothing compared to what lapis suffered so she is essentially unaffected
I think with the way the show painted the diamonds while on one side lapis might have more power over the area as a proper terraformer, there's really nothing she could do to keep a genuinely serious blue diamond down in a way that matters. they're basically indestructible, top of the race in raw power, and capable of just making powers up on the fly if they want to if steven and pink are any indication. lapis just kind of shrugs off the main ability blue likes to use and stuns her for a bit, but after all that fighting blue got right back up and talked like nothing happened. she looked like she was honestly inconvenienced at best, and this was with her being straight up the least combatant of the four, even below a serious steven. not counting rose in combat experience.
I like the idea of all gems having small aesthetic powers like shapeshifting, sand/cloud/light manipulation, the bubbles . . . It makes them feel more alien and whimsical. Tho when it's used in an actually powerfulll way like garnet growing to Monster stevens height, it does get kinda infuriating to not see it used in serious moments. Like . . . she could just deck a diamond in the chin with a giant gauntlet . . .
I think after flesh Steven dies of age, Pink Steven is born. I Can see all versions existing but honestly they are all good in context of what the future (no pun intended) looks like.
So here's my theory the magic system isn't actually magic because the gems might just be nanites and the actual gem is just a computer telling the nanites what shape to make and glass ghost can just be a ton of nanites making glass out of sand, that's why glass ghost could instantly regenerate
Honestly I think the power system is pretty great there's litterally only a few nit picky stuff here and there but as for learning new powers and such is probably from how gems are litterally just complex pieces of technology made from massive amounts of life energy of other planets essentially making them immortal even when they shatter they can be put together
/There is a cannon explanation for why the diamonds seamed so week. Its cause they were. They never believed it possible for the Gems to rebell, and when Rose created that Army they realised "Hey, maybe we shoudn't be creating super powerful Gems anymore. Maybe we should make them weeker and more dependant on us!"

Quick thoughts: -Anything that happens INSIDE the gem rooms isn't conducive to the gems real abilities ( Garnet's extendo-arms, Steven't conjuring of various objects and people, Pearl walking on water) -The Diamonds abilities are overlooked as "the opposite" in Future despite the fact that the show's messaging explains what happened! Using blue diamong as an example, her ability was "Emotional Control" not "Instant Depression", however because she erroneously believed that every gem could only fulfill one single purpose (as did all gems) she assumed she could only use her ability in that one way (Depression) but when her mind and mentality was expanded my Steven and the gems she realized she might be able to use her ability in other ways, which we see happening in Future! -The "explosive" Diamonds had for misbehaving gems was twofold, both every single diamond's special ability (Gem Destabilizing, Instant Depression, Complete Control, Actual physical constructs) and also the Diamond Mech! This didn't work on our Lapis Lazuli because she'd been allowed to be fused and abused for a long time, developping some sort of issues that outwheighed Blue's Instant Depression, this would never happen in howeworld or if they used the mech -Glass Ghost's power might be related to the corruption present in all corrupted gems so it would be simple to fix using the diamond extracts/abilities and we technically can't even be sure if it would work on the Diamonds themselves, seeing as they's the ones who corrupted the gems in the 1st place!
I'd care if the power system in JJK is broken (it is) because it hinges entirely on it, but Steven Universe's works well enough for it's own show. There's also just a lot of intellectual dishonesty. We're like 2 minutes in and bro forgot that White can instantly blitz and control any gem 🙏🏼😭

A huge amount of Lapis would take to defeat a single diamond, even Blue. If the show hasn't insisted enough in their power, corrupted Steven shows how powerful a diamond can be. if i had to guess as to WHY Pearl was able to manipulate sand that 1 time i'd say it can be 1 of 2 things: - Pearl was just using Projection - Pearls are servant gems, so MAYBE they are designed to be some sort of jack of all trades, not only meant for service duty and possibly conversation, but also meant to copy their bosses abilities to a lesser degree, only to help them fullfil some menal tasks on that later example IF true Pearl might have just been making it a hobby to figure out how to unlock all the other potential abilities all Pearls can have all for the purpose of being a more usefull tool for Rose/Pink although on that scenario her not using all those abilities (she MIGHT have) could be seen as her passivly trying to let Steven DIE, since some part of her still thinks that'll get her Rose/Pink back... but that's just a bit too dark for the show's premiss right?
Yeah the magic system is weird, kaiju steven looked pretty underwhelming too in terms of his powers, like his roar could push everyone back and knock them down temporarily but you would expect his roar to be strong enough to crack some of the crystal gems or smth. White Diamond actually seems like the weakest diamond despite her supposedly being the strongest. All she can really do is mind control, we see that Yellow Diamond has a pretty good skillset as she was able to easily crush steven to unconsciousness WHILE he was using his Shield. Yellow and Blue Diamond are shown to fight extremely well too. Blue Diamond basically brushed off most of the attacks that the Crystal gems threw at her. Yellow Diamond appeared from her ship unscathed even though her ship was bodied by the cluster. White Diamond can simply mind control other gems- Like white diamond is supposed to be the strongest but she kinda seems the weakest, she’s exceptionally strong and durable but so are the other diamonds. I do think Blue and Yellow used a good amount of their potential and if they were villains for a longer period, maybe we could’ve seem even more of what they could do.
Gems do get tired, as seen in the episode where pearl dreams about rose and it turns out she's greg. Also blue diamond casually destroyed her water chains. Diamonds just out scale normal gems physically. I can admit tho if all of homeworld worked together they could definitely at least kill blue diamond and maaaaaybe yellow but if all the diamonds work together they all stand no chance

No lapis is strong but she also got poofed by yellow diamond and I believe Blue diamond can do the same thing. But I think she's a bit different because remember she was out here shattering gems and when they fort she was using her grief powers to manipulate the other crystal gems. I have to wonder how she was in her prime before she had her emotions messed up over pink diamond. Because he was colonizing planets as well I think everyone tends to forget that because she's one of the more prettier diamonds but she's just as deadly as the other three. I think the reason why a lapis is so powerful is because she is from Blue diamonds court. I would argue that I believe her gems are more destructive This is something that we can see with every other blue gems we see within the series they're all very chaotic and very dark in their nature. Almost smiling usually with bad intentions from aquamarine, to Holly Blue, to the other lapis lazuli's we see terraforming they all appear to be very very dark while appearing to be happy and playful. This does make me wonder just what the heck blue diamond was like back then before she was emotionally devastated and just how deadly she was as like I said the only people I really saw talking about shattering was the diamonds in general and she was one of the first ones we saw talking about shattering as if it was common. So I do think lapis is really strong I would put her right underneath the diamonds or actually underneath the diamonds and Steven. But it does make me wonder what other gems do they have and just how powerful can they be in battle? Because it blackness is in an area with no water at all her powers are not that strong as far as we can tell if she can control other elements that's completely different. If the show ever continues or has a sequel what they should do is make a lapis forever diamonds courts imagine ones that can freely control air or even the land they stand on almost like the avatar was different powers that would be really cool.

The difference is that lapis, while really powerful, is one of the more important characters in the show so we saw more of her abilties, blue isnt but we are told how she had a part in releasing a planetary blast from another planet and even in the little screentime we got we had blue fighting like 9 characters including lapis while not caring
Correction: Nobody Can die. Yellow diamond can fix shattered gems. Steven can bring any living thing back to life if he’s sad enough about it. Steven himself can technically live forever if he believes he is a certain age and has a confirmed healing factor.

This is true. Also, another reason the diamonds are feared is cause White Diamond can just straight up remove the will of any gem. Even if you could manage to beat Blue and Yellow, you'd just get zombified by White.
The diamonds did have a leash on the other gems, just not a physical one. It was extremely deeply ingrained in almost every other gem that they were subordinate to the diamonds. There are real world examples of objectively weaker beings exerting control over the powerful, such as humans training horses or elephants. Also they're a reasonable approximation of the politically powerful, where nobody wants the system to fall apart so they're afraid to challenge any of it. The crystal gems were (likely? it's been a while) seen as terrorists on homeworld for destabilizing the system. That being said, I 100% agree that if she had enough water and distance Lapis could take the diamonds, and that Steven is the most powerful one. The only danger to Lapis would be getting inside white's mind control range which is never really defined. But even then she's shown herself to be remarkably resilient to being manipulated, she just hasn't faced something on white's level in that respect that we know of.

Well, It's because SU is actually sci-fi) Jokes aside, I don't think Rebecca put much thought in world building as characters internal conflict is already very complicated. The show is more about emotions and love, everything else is probably considered story tools to express said emotions.
This is why when I write fanfics for this show I just make up my own magic system Screw canon I am a god I will make this world make sense if it kills me

I don't really see how Lapis could beat Blue diamond. I don't think she can poof blue diamond even with all her power. On the other hand I think blue can poof or even shatter Lapis just by stepping on her. Despite all her power Lapis lacks durability. Bismuth poofed her in one attack and a regular gem stepping on her made her crack. We also don't know if Lapis can block or tank blues light based attacks. Steven needed to use his shield to block it and even he struggled a lot and needed the other gems to help him. That attack alone could likely take Lapis out. The best Lapis can hope for is to trap blue diamond under the ocean like what she did with Jasper when they were fused but even then I am not sure how long she can keep that up as after a few months she eventually ran out of stamina which allowed Jasper to escape and take control and blue diamond is a lot stronger than Jasper and she was able to break out of Lapises chains after a bit of struggle when she landed on Earth.. Overall I don't think Blue looses here.

One thing that always bothered me is that the Diamonds were really WEAK, how can a couple of gems, not even fused be able to take down Blue Diamond??? For me a Diamond should have the power to take down hordes of gems without much effort, that would justify their status.
they were bum rushing to finish the show. watching the season finale was legit so bizarre, they made blue diamond look so non formidable and lame. when you hear alexandrite's theme start it's like ok ts is getting real but then oh alexandrite is immediately gone💀 this group of unfused gems running circles around BD until she falls down. it was so unserious and the wedding attire didn't help

To be honest, I wouldn't consider the stuff Steven and the Gems are capable of as some form of magic...at least, not in the typical sense.
When I think of magic, I imagine powerful sorcerers or god-like beings commanding the mystical forces of the universe with a thought. As for the Gems, they just harness the light energy of their stones to do what they need. The only Gem I can think of whose powers CAN be seen as magical is Rose and her healing powers

You're underestimating the Diamonds. We just don't ever actually see them fight.
Remember that all Gems have their powers derived from the essence of the Diamonds, so it's reasonable to assume that all gem powers are directly copied from them, or emerge from the combined essence. Lapis is a gem purely of Blue's court. So we have no reason to assume Blue also can't manipulate water similarly to her.

This is a real disclaimer at the top of the SU wiki page so I agree that it's extremely debatable if the gems can be claimed to be using "real magic" on the show however we kind of have to believe that this is the case because The Crystal Gems keep telling us that it is real magic. 🤔
The difference between a diamond and other gems is the raw power it has. The reason Pink developed so many powers and later steven did the same, to a point he was powerful enough to shatter Jasper, shows that the problem is not that Blue is Weak, it's that she relied on her latent abilities without allowing herself to grow. And once she stoped feeling sad, she just flipped sides.
That doesn't mean her only power is making people sad with her aura, or use her aura to make people happy, she literally can use her aura to shot tons of rays at others.
The Diamonds are also suggested to be made by consuming entire body of planets, their gem are very dense and strong, and no one truly knows if it's possible to shatter a diamond either. Lapis was made for terraforming, but her anger just turned her own powers into something more latent, and her time with Jasper made her realise how to focalize all that anger into power.
But at the end of the day, the only thing lapis can do, is to take water, and control to an extreme level, but she can't change her powers. I think that's what's the Diamonds wanted to actually say when they mentioned each gem has a specific duty, and I think it's more related to their power.
If Yellow, Blue and White were so less strict and more open to changes, there's a chance they would develop other powers besides the complete opposite of what they did:
Yellow could shatter gems, now she can stabilize them even fi they are shattered.
Blue could make everyone sad, but now she can force you to be happy.
White could control everyone, now she can let everyone control her.
Pink was considered useless, so she became the most versatile diamond. She could Scream and it would break everything, she reversed that to become composed and calm, but in the end, the sheer level of power she has in the end is jut she learning to control her powers and understand how strong a Diamond is. Diamonds give live in the story of Steven Universe, Pink was the sole one who understood this better than the others, to a point she created the pebbles, she learned her powers could be used in organic beings such as Lion, and she even learned how to use her power to create a pocket dimension, she first did it with Lion, then she did it with her room. Note how Pink's rooms in the Gem's temple is different and unique. It's a room that exists solely to do anything she wants, I believe the sole reason the temple can exist is because Pink used some of her diamonds powers to create it overall. But more than that, notice how any new Crystal Gems can't have a Temple room anymore. That knowledge died with Pink,
Anyway, I'm not saying Lapis is weak, I'm just saying she would defeat Blue is a bit out of question, not because she's weaker than blue but more because a Diamond is stronger and harder than other gems, even Yellow suffers to poof Blue when she tried, and notice how Lapis got instantly poofed by touching Yellow's rays of electricity, while blue could not be unstabilized at all by it, not as easily. That's all there is to it.
Blue just need to step on Lapis, and her gem would crash.
After all, her gem cracked by having another simple gem stepping on it.
I also feel like Pink/Rose's want and willingness to change allowed her to explore her powers to their fullest. White, Yellow, and Blue can only do so much because while they certainly changed, it's not an integral part of their personalities. This is also why Steven became so "OP" because a humans natural state is change so it makes sense he could condense Pink's power expansion into such a short time

My head canon on how the magic system works is similar to yours to be fair, I agree that if The Diamonds were forced to be in more compromising situations they would also develop even more powers like Steven and Rose but the point is if Lapis fought Blue Diamond right now, as in ASAP, could Blue Diamond realistically defend herself? I just don't think so. We know that not even the three Diamonds working together could do *anything* to restrain Steven but Lapis using just her water chains could. Maybe the Diamonds are too durable to be shattered through normal means but Pink Diamond "faking her death" and getting away with it implies that the other Diamonds believe that they could be shattered by getting hit with a strong enough sword. 😁

Four gods exist, three are so strong they never train or grow and exist in ease. The weakest god learns to master their powers finding every tiny nuance within. The weakest god aka Steven/pink diamond would be the strongest. What I mean is that the other diamonds have more potential than Steven but will never find that power making Steven the strongest. It’s more of a theory I’ve always had to explain it
It's genius and accurate, the one time in history that we know about when the other Diamonds were forced to reevaluate their way of life, they all developed brand new powers like Steven have been doing throughout the series whenever he needed them unlocked. It explains a lot, A+ fam. 😁
Start craft 3 Gems + 2 sticks in Crafting Table, and enchant it with Looting III, and then mine other gems buried in stone ground, it's strong enough to reproduce gems species.
Each Diamond also discovered their destructive sides first before realizing they had more constructive ways to use their powers. Which is true for Pink Diamond as well, we just learned about her story in reverse, where we saw her best self first.

Gemstones also feed off of light and require light to materialize a form, so you can tire a gem out by "starving" them of light, which is what most likely the tower Pink was being locked in was meant to do: starve Pink out so she'd be too tired to be emotional.
They were mentally exhausted, not physically. They had been going to mission after mission nonstop for days, of course it was gonna be draining. Gems have moods and they can be emotionally and mentally drained, but physically they have infinite stamina. When peridot sends her robonoids to Earth, garnet says they could keep trying to stop them forever, but she just didn't want to

i remember being so hyped during earlier seasons because i thought “if the gems are this powerful already, what kind of power does the diamonds have” then being disappointed because they’ve become so weak despite how they were portrayed as the strongest earlier in the season.

Yeah, the gems themselves aren't even magic-- just really fancy tools. They can't cast spells or anything (other than summoning their weapon)
And in era 2, tech was able to compensate for the gems' lack of innate power.

I think it has to do with the era's. In peridots episode, Too Short To Ride, she mentions how "they just don't make gems like they used too"
Era 1 gems can shape shift and they have all sorts of powers, while era 2 gems can't shapeshift and have little to no powers, so they use technology to make up for it.
I think in Era 1 they did use more magical things, and in era 2 they switched to technology for efficiency.

First off, our lapis is definatly stronger than your average lapis, as shown in SU future, but blue diamond is still stronger and more durable than the entire ocean. Lapis is a conditional gem, in a planet filled with water like the earth, she thrives in power, but in a planet like homeworld with none water seen so far, the only thing she has going for her is the natural small portion of water she can summon with her wings. And we literally saw lapis fighting against blue diamond, and she lost?!?! what is even the point of the discussion?? there is no "prime" lapis, she doesn't age, her powers don't change, as long as her gem isn't cracked, she is in her "prime" so, yes, blue diamond does win, in every single scenario

To put it simply, the three Diamonds are basically all Friezas, all three of them never, EVER had any reason to train or get stronger, like Frieza, until they finally had to deal with someone STRONGER than them. Their shit was bound to get wrecked at some point, anyways.
I noticed the diamonds barely use their power, only just a small fraction of it, if anything at all. They use just enough power/magic to defeat the gem they’re fighting, or they think it is enough. I think if they use their full potential it would be a lot more devastating. Blue was seen using a bit more, when she used those lasers when fighting the crystal gems. All yellow diamond does is poof gems with her power. Blue diamond makes everyone said (extra: the lasers), and white only controls gems. This is ALL we have seen them do. Someone also pointed out how their bodies are also more stronger and durable than your average gem. Also that person pointed out how pink had multiple powers, which I have thought of a long time ago. The diamonds powers have a bad side, and a good side. We see this in the Future season, where they all use their powers for good. But they still BARELY did anything. I blame this lack of information on Rebecca sugar. If only we could see more.
The ONE time they used their "full" power, it corrupted the gems. And it's been stated if Pink helped the gems would've been shattered

i think alot of people misunderstand why lapis is so busted. most planets dont actually have much water on them, earth is like 70 percent ocean so a hydrokinesis gem like her would be INSANE on earth because of the sheer volume of water she has access to, but the most we really see her do against a diamond is restrain them.
she is not beating blue, def not yellow, and definitely not white or steven.
blue was eating destabilization lightning for a long time and still didnt get poofed, while lapis literally gets oneshotted and poofed in her flashback by a regular bismuth punching her. yellow can poof gems by poking them really hard what is lapis realistically gonna do?

for the pearl sandbending thing, i we only ever see her do that on a tiny scale so its kinda brash to assume she has full on Psammokinesis and can fully manipulate it like the dessert gem

The Bismuth that poofed Lapiz was our Bismuth and Lapiz was off guard. Lapiz is was stronger thrn every crystal gem besides Steven, Alexandrite and Obsideon.
Also not to mention how much raw physical strength the diamonds have, they could literally just walk into something and break it, yellow especially is quick from that one episode we saw when she stomped steven.
The power system really is confusing, in I Am My Monster, the Diamonds COMBINED couldn't restrain Steven but LAPIS by herself can? And I don't know why Steven is the strongest gem. Shouldn't it be White Diamond? BTW, great video!
White and pink diamonds have the same crystal structure, pink diamonds are just formed under immense pressure. Pink is simply a more dense white.

The diamonds tried one single thing each, and one that would obviously not work.
Yellow tried forcing Steven to appear to be okay, to try to revert him back to being human. Of course it's not gonna work, his shapeshifting powers are gonna turn him into a monster again.
Blue tried to force him to being happy, but he's already shown in human form to be able to resist the influence of the clouds, of course now that he's having a mental breakdown they're not going to help.
White tried to enter his mind, but he was in a corrupted state, his mind wasn't anything like Steven's, and if she tried to keep controlling him, she would probably end up corrupting herself, too.
Lapis only grabbed Steven with water, the diamonds didn't try to hold Steven in place.
Lapis in her prime didn't have nearly the same amount of trauma she does now and her trauma is what allowed her to shrug off Blue Diamond's ability... In, may I remind you, the most badass scene of the entire show!
there are Gem's with powers that you'd think could topple a diamond, but you have to remember all the Diamonds have powers that can just shut down other gems. Say you have one of those op gems that control matter, Yellow will instantly poof them, Blue forces them to submit with emotion, and White forces her own will onto it, and all together they can nuke a planet. Lapis was only able to resist blue because she went through centuries of pain,so i imagine you need alot of physical resilience to resist Yellows attack, or mental fortitude to fight off white's influence.
It is funny tough that gems have this arbitrary hierarchy, despite many of the lower gems being way more powerful than those up top. I guess thats the point though.

It seems like crystal gem Lapis is literally a stronger version of the lapis’ terrorising the blue planet.
My theory is that Steven being part human made his growth as a gem skyrocket.
Gems, as opposed to humans, can't really select their job and powers.
What I mean by this is that maybe his human genes broke whatever kind of limit Pink Diamond had in the past.
Creating a shield became (almost) energy constructs.
Whatever ability she had of healing became so potent that it can repair cracked Gems.
Also, since Steven's form isn't made of the energy that makes the solid shape of normal gems the extra energy that would have been used to make a completly solid body, both inside and out, wouldn't have been wasted by it being active all the time and maintaining such a big form like a that Diamonds'
So all that energy that would have been wasted just became extra power ups that Steven can (seemingly) create when it's required for his survival.

My personal headcannon is that Steven is the most powerful Diamond, that each Diamonds ability centres around manipulating an aspect of gems in general, Blue - emotions, Yellow - physical form, White - mental state & Pink which I think can manipulate whatever passes for a gems soul, you said the story of the glass ghost is basically what happens after death which has connections to ghosts/souls.

To be fair with lapis, with how freaked out Paradot was with rain it’s safe to assume gems aren’t around water much. On earth she may be the most powerful but there’s not that much liquid water in the universe comparatively.

I think there's an important fact that gets overlooked a lot: a gem's ability is strongly linked to mental and emotional constitution. tons of examples of distracted gems accidentally canceling their abilities, unstable emotions causing spikes in energy at the sacrifice of clarity of form (corruption). that may come off as narrative contrivance, for the sake of the plot, but it's consistent with Gems as Beings of Light and Thought made manifest. Emotions and Introspection dictate appearance, two thoughts can combine in synthesis to create a new idea and relationship (fusion), and a powerful enough idea can shake your worldview and. change your mind
anyway, Spinel is the most powerful gem, provided that the animators have an infinite budget. she's this universe's Pinkie Pie, or Monkey D. Luffy, because she has the power of Cartoons, in an animated medium

It feels far simpler than it looks, the diamonds "hatched" from the core of a star. They ARE the megacompressed core of a star. Sentient Beings with a continuously renewable thermonuclear reactor in their chests, if they couldn't bend local reality to their whim i'd be surprised, but they lacked outside-the-box thinking in all their 20 thousand years except Pink and everyone under her influence of new ideas. Its hard to imagine what any gem is truly capable of with the right intent. I like the "there are no rules" approach personally

The gem could supply energy like a power bank, but it can't power a tired old shell he was dieing with the gem as he got older when he first had hijinks(control of power which could be sharpened but also dulled so it could happen)

id argue that as long as steven stays mentally strong, he wont die. he is capable of healing himself unconsciously, and as his body deteriorates in old age, his gem would probably just heal it (i could also imagine this puting strain on his abilities, but idk, hes pretty powerful, maybe it wont) also he is capable of rasing the dead, but i dont know if he could raise himself from the dead. one way it could go is his gem keeps him alive untill he lets himself die, he lives for so long that he goes insane and can no longer regulate his powers, to the point were nothing is keeping him alive, or he does die or come very closw to death, and his gem automatically resurrects him.

You make a lot of great points, especially the parts where gems showcase a random power that's never used again, but I think the video as a whole is forgetting the main difference between Steven (as well as the other crystal gems) vs homeworld gems. For all the gems that haven't spent any significant time on earth, it's their entire culture and order to only do exactly as they were built to do. They're more like highly advanced robots instead of people, so even though their abilities are CAPABLE of improvement, they don't actually improve because they're not "supposed" to change, they're supposed to just work "right out the box" so to speak. I assume it's much easier and more efficient to work as an army if everyone's exercising as little personality as possible.
Of course Steven is stronger than the Diamonds because Pink became Rose Quartz and had to fight her OWN army while heavily outnumbered. Diamonds on paper are the strongest gems sure and they're extraordinarily durable, but she still had to push her own limits and improve herself over thousands of years to even the odds, while Pink's soldiers were just going through the motions. A battle of Quality vs Quantity. And then Steven had to get just as creative when learning to handle the powers he inherited. After all that training while the other diamonds sat around delegating, it's only natural that Pink (and therefore Steven) would become the strongest of them all.
Similarly, of course Lapis can easily hold her own against Blue diamond. She's OUR Lapis. Her entire backstory makes her immune to the one significant power that Blue has, and the sad part is? Diamonds are just so inherently stronger than other gems that despite all the crazy hydrokinesis, Blue could just slap her and she'd poof (keep in mind Yellow poofed a Zircon with her finger one time), so the only real question is how long it'll take Lapis to miss a dodge? And nevermind what would happen if all the other collective Lapis fought against her, she'd just use her cry ability and they'd all collapse like everyone else did. Once again, personal experiences (plus a really good matchup) come into play.
Now, I'm not gonna say the show has a clarified magic system cuz, well, it doesn't. The way Gems work alone is too far beyond science fiction to really have any kind of "system" to it. But I will say this: Gems are born with abilities, some stronger than others, and then with time, effort and dedication, they can grow and become stronger, gaining new abilities. Every gem has immediate powers and latent ones, and the gems that seem "stronger" than they should be are, more often than not, exercising those latent powers. But they only get them when they make the effort to do so.
Jasper never made an effort beyond slamming her head into rocks as training. She never adapted and kept blaming all her losses on fusion, so she kept losing to gems that were supposed to be weaker, even when fused.
The other Lapis' never made an effort to learn anything other than terra forming, so that's all they're good at. They COULD do some great damage with their attacks, but they couldn't possibly have the sheer will and resilience it takes to stand up to blue diamond like our Lapis did.
The diamonds never once made an effort besides delegating tasks to underlings, especially once they thought Pink was shattered. They figured they could just beam the planet and be done with it. So they eventually lost to Steven, a full fledged diamond who's fully realized his latent abilities.
So it does make sense, kinda, you're just forgetting to include the individual in the conversation.

all put together it makes sense that the diamonds ruled, even without world destroying capabilities.
I'm a little sad that the idea of each gem having a weapon was dropped at some point, it would have been cool seeing the weapons some of the -kenesis gems wielded or even the diamonds.

Well since the Gems are are actually Aliens they don't really need a Magic System because they basically have Super Powers & not Magic Spells or anything like that,
But in all seriousness Steven Universe had great concepts, but wasn't executed very well, I mean the audience couldn't be made aware of anything unless Steven was made aware of it(which would work out well for the First Season or for a Movie, but Not for the Entire F*-_ing Series), the Storytelling, World Building & Character Development for everything/one Not Steven didn't reach it's true potential(unlike Adventure Time which did well with everything outside of Finn & Jake), and because the series got cancelled too soon the 5th Season felt too rushed like they were trying to cram two seasons worth of story into the last half of the final season, and Future was mostly just Steven going through PTSD & trashing his Mom for how she started out as instead of admiring her for how she ended up as,
Honestly I seriously hope this Franchise gets Rebooted so that it can have many of the OG's biggest mistakes corrected for the better.
The biggest edge lapis has over blue Diamond is her trauma, as she showed when she yeeted the barn at blue, blues pain is nothing compared to what lapis suffered so she is essentially unaffected
I think with the way the show painted the diamonds while on one side lapis might have more power over the area as a proper terraformer, there's really nothing she could do to keep a genuinely serious blue diamond down in a way that matters. they're basically indestructible, top of the race in raw power, and capable of just making powers up on the fly if they want to if steven and pink are any indication. lapis just kind of shrugs off the main ability blue likes to use and stuns her for a bit, but after all that fighting blue got right back up and talked like nothing happened. she looked like she was honestly inconvenienced at best, and this was with her being straight up the least combatant of the four, even below a serious steven. not counting rose in combat experience.

Tho when it's used in an actually powerfulll way like garnet growing to Monster stevens height, it does get kinda infuriating to not see it used in serious moments. Like . . . she could just deck a diamond in the chin with a giant gauntlet . . .
I think after flesh Steven dies of age, Pink Steven is born. I Can see all versions existing but honestly they are all good in context of what the future (no pun intended) looks like.

So here's my theory the magic system isn't actually magic because the gems might just be nanites and the actual gem is just a computer telling the nanites what shape to make and glass ghost can just be a ton of nanites making glass out of sand, that's why glass ghost could instantly regenerate

Honestly I think the power system is pretty great there's litterally only a few nit picky stuff here and there but as for learning new powers and such is probably from how gems are litterally just complex pieces of technology made from massive amounts of life energy of other planets essentially making them immortal even when they shatter they can be put together
/There is a cannon explanation for why the diamonds seamed so week. Its cause they were. They never believed it possible for the Gems to rebell, and when Rose created that Army they realised "Hey, maybe we shoudn't be creating super powerful Gems anymore. Maybe we should make them weeker and more dependant on us!"
The only power of Steven’s that I don’t like is the aging thing. I would be fine with everything else if he wasn’t essentially immortal. Immortality freaks me out

Quick thoughts:
-Anything that happens INSIDE the gem rooms isn't conducive to the gems real abilities ( Garnet's extendo-arms, Steven't conjuring of various objects and people, Pearl walking on water)
-The Diamonds abilities are overlooked as "the opposite" in Future despite the fact that the show's messaging explains what happened! Using blue diamong as an example, her ability was "Emotional Control" not "Instant Depression", however because she erroneously believed that every gem could only fulfill one single purpose (as did all gems) she assumed she could only use her ability in that one way (Depression) but when her mind and mentality was expanded my Steven and the gems she realized she might be able to use her ability in other ways, which we see happening in Future!
-The "explosive" Diamonds had for misbehaving gems was twofold, both every single diamond's special ability (Gem Destabilizing, Instant Depression, Complete Control, Actual physical constructs) and also the Diamond Mech! This didn't work on our Lapis Lazuli because she'd been allowed to be fused and abused for a long time, developping some sort of issues that outwheighed Blue's Instant Depression, this would never happen in howeworld or if they used the mech
-Glass Ghost's power might be related to the corruption present in all corrupted gems so it would be simple to fix using the diamond extracts/abilities and we technically can't even be sure if it would work on the Diamonds themselves, seeing as they's the ones who corrupted the gems in the 1st place!
I'd care if the power system in JJK is broken (it is) because it hinges entirely on it, but Steven Universe's works well enough for it's own show. There's also just a lot of intellectual dishonesty. We're like 2 minutes in and bro forgot that White can instantly blitz and control any gem 🙏🏼😭
I really have to finish JJK s2, I had to take a break when Yuji regained his consciousness after Sukuna had enough fun, it was too hype, I couldn't binge it all in one sitting. 🥵👌
Also you're right, if White Diamond gets even a chance to mind control she could disarm presumably any gem but it's reasonable to assume that since Lapis pulled *earth's entire ocean* to herself, that she wouldn't need to be in range of White Diamond to do her thing. 😏
The only way steven can die is if he reincarnates pink diamonds consciousness in their gem then pink can take her complete form and destroy Steven's body
1:09 because she contributed 1/3rd of the corrupting light, a SOLAR SYSTEM LEVEL ATTACK, also all Diamonds are the peak of Gem kind, Lapis being one of Blue diamond's gems would make her more powerful by default.
Also, the diamonds simply emerging destroyed a large planet. Also also, Blue diamond being a blue gem wouldnt be a surprise so see her also having hydrokinesis as all diamonds have some telekinetic pull over their country to continent level ships.
So yah, blue diamond wins. Yellow is above her, white is above her, and Pink is above all the rest

A huge amount of Lapis would take to defeat a single diamond, even Blue. If the show hasn't insisted enough in their power, corrupted Steven shows how powerful a diamond can be. And I believe Blue Diamond is stronger than Steven, even though she has never needed to show even the 10% of her power. That's what I think.

Wasn't Lapis poofed by Yellow Diamond? So she can't be as strong as a diamond, unless yellow is stronger than blue.
I think the diamonds have bigger health bars & weaker attacks that's all (except yellow, she actually works out and stuff)
if i had to guess as to WHY Pearl was able to manipulate sand that 1 time
i'd say it can be 1 of 2 things:
- Pearl was just using Projection
- Pearls are servant gems, so MAYBE they are designed to be some sort of jack of all trades, not only meant for service duty and possibly conversation, but also meant to copy their bosses abilities to a lesser degree, only to help them fullfil some menal tasks

Yeah the magic system is weird, kaiju steven looked pretty underwhelming too in terms of his powers, like his roar could push everyone back and knock them down temporarily but you would expect his roar to be strong enough to crack some of the crystal gems or smth. White Diamond actually seems like the weakest diamond despite her supposedly being the strongest. All she can really do is mind control, we see that Yellow Diamond has a pretty good skillset as she was able to easily crush steven to unconsciousness WHILE he was using his Shield. Yellow and Blue Diamond are shown to fight extremely well too. Blue Diamond basically brushed off most of the attacks that the Crystal gems threw at her. Yellow Diamond appeared from her ship unscathed even though her ship was bodied by the cluster. White Diamond can simply mind control other gems- Like white diamond is supposed to be the strongest but she kinda seems the weakest, she’s exceptionally strong and durable but so are the other diamonds. I do think Blue and Yellow used a good amount of their potential and if they were villains for a longer period, maybe we could’ve seem even more of what they could do.
Gems do get tired, as seen in the episode where pearl dreams about rose and it turns out she's greg. Also blue diamond casually destroyed her water chains. Diamonds just out scale normal gems physically. I can admit tho if all of homeworld worked together they could definitely at least kill blue diamond and maaaaaybe yellow but if all the diamonds work together they all stand no chance

No lapis is strong but she also got poofed by yellow diamond and I believe Blue diamond can do the same thing. But I think she's a bit different because remember she was out here shattering gems and when they fort she was using her grief powers to manipulate the other crystal gems. I have to wonder how she was in her prime before she had her emotions messed up over pink diamond. Because he was colonizing planets as well I think everyone tends to forget that because she's one of the more prettier diamonds but she's just as deadly as the other three. I think the reason why a lapis is so powerful is because she is from Blue diamonds court. I would argue that I believe her gems are more destructive This is something that we can see with every other blue gems we see within the series they're all very chaotic and very dark in their nature. Almost smiling usually with bad intentions from aquamarine, to Holly Blue, to the other lapis lazuli's we see terraforming they all appear to be very very dark while appearing to be happy and playful.
This does make me wonder just what the heck blue diamond was like back then before she was emotionally devastated and just how deadly she was as like I said the only people I really saw talking about shattering was the diamonds in general and she was one of the first ones we saw talking about shattering as if it was common. So I do think lapis is really strong I would put her right underneath the diamonds or actually underneath the diamonds and Steven. But it does make me wonder what other gems do they have and just how powerful can they be in battle? Because it blackness is in an area with no water at all her powers are not that strong as far as we can tell if she can control other elements that's completely different.
If the show ever continues or has a sequel what they should do is make a lapis forever diamonds courts imagine ones that can freely control air or even the land they stand on almost like the avatar was different powers that would be really cool.

Didnt blue diamond casually shot a blast from another planet reaching the earth? And not to mention lapis with a fully healed gem tried to restrain blue diamond with water chains and blue broke them off in like one swing while seemingly unbothered or uncaring at most
The difference is that lapis, while really powerful, is one of the more important characters in the show so we saw more of her abilties, blue isnt but we are told how she had a part in releasing a planetary blast from another planet and even in the little screentime we got we had blue fighting like 9 characters including lapis while not caring

Correction: Nobody Can die. Yellow diamond can fix shattered gems. Steven can bring any living thing back to life if he’s sad enough about it. Steven himself can technically live forever if he believes he is a certain age and has a confirmed healing factor.
0:55 can you define "Prime lapis". When I gem gets healed or regenerate that is their prime. Due to the trauma Lapis went through lapis after the war wins

I was thinking that "Prime Lapis" would be a version of her that wasn't holding back, her peakest form. We know that when a gem is cracked they 100% aren't as strong as they truly can be so if cracked Lapis was able to manipulate the entire ocean on Earth while controlling water clones that would've beaten The Crystal Gems if Steven didn't step in with Pink Diamond's overpowered shield then I think it's safe to say that she'd be a monster if she let loose in the present. 😳

This is true. Also, another reason the diamonds are feared is cause White Diamond can just straight up remove the will of any gem. Even if you could manage to beat Blue and Yellow, you'd just get zombified by White.
Yea the power scaling on this show is odd
The diamonds did have a leash on the other gems, just not a physical one. It was extremely deeply ingrained in almost every other gem that they were subordinate to the diamonds. There are real world examples of objectively weaker beings exerting control over the powerful, such as humans training horses or elephants. Also they're a reasonable approximation of the politically powerful, where nobody wants the system to fall apart so they're afraid to challenge any of it. The crystal gems were (likely? it's been a while) seen as terrorists on homeworld for destabilizing the system. That being said, I 100% agree that if she had enough water and distance Lapis could take the diamonds, and that Steven is the most powerful one. The only danger to Lapis would be getting inside white's mind control range which is never really defined. But even then she's shown herself to be remarkably resilient to being manipulated, she just hasn't faced something on white's level in that respect that we know of.

Jokes aside, I don't think Rebecca put much thought in world building as characters internal conflict is already very complicated. The show is more about emotions and love, everything else is probably considered story tools to express said emotions.

Hehehehe, first of all that was only a joke but second of all, I still kind of do. The gems created "The Moon Goddess" and built a temple to worship her, they believe in Goddesses. Rose Quartz had a weapon in her secret armory called "The Heretics Anguish" and if you don't know why that's *massively huge* evidence, look up what the word "heretic" means. 😏🥂
I don't really see how Lapis could beat Blue diamond. I don't think she can poof blue diamond even with all her power. On the other hand I think blue can poof or even shatter Lapis just by stepping on her. Despite all her power Lapis lacks durability. Bismuth poofed her in one attack and a regular gem stepping on her made her crack. We also don't know if Lapis can block or tank blues light based attacks. Steven needed to use his shield to block it and even he struggled a lot and needed the other gems to help him. That attack alone could likely take Lapis out. The best Lapis can hope for is to trap blue diamond under the ocean like what she did with Jasper when they were fused but even then I am not sure how long she can keep that up as after a few months she eventually ran out of stamina which allowed Jasper to escape and take control and blue diamond is a lot stronger than Jasper and she was able to break out of Lapises chains after a bit of struggle when she landed on Earth.. Overall I don't think Blue looses here.

One thing that always bothered me is that the Diamonds were really WEAK, how can a couple of gems, not even fused be able to take down Blue Diamond??? For me a Diamond should have the power to take down hordes of gems without much effort, that would justify their status.

Guys, guys the funniest part is that Rebecca Sugar and The Crewniverse was actually rushed to finish the show *after the wedding special in reunited* so that still means the episode went exactly as planned for them. Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond went to earth without *any backup* for no reason (This is on brand though, these are the masterminds that sent 5 Rubies to recover one of their greatest soldiers, apparently.), they got their butts kicked by a few gems with a Lapis that wasn't even taking the fight seriously and to top it all off... Wait no, that's it. Disappointing ending to a comment isn't it? 😏

We never really care much about power scailing. Just the look and emotional payoff.
