- Synth Show - Ep203 - Sound Design - Behringer UB-Xa
So I finally got the Behringer UB-Xa that I per-ordered and will be putting it through its paces, see what we can come up with Live.
Here's a PolyPatch I made with, based upon a Patch I made on the Oberheim OB-X8

Basically it sounds like an Obie, but I agree on that it sounds a little bit ’muddier‘, i.e. lacks those sharp, sizzling high frequencies and separation of voices. It‘s probably easier to make an instantly pleasing patch on the Uliheim, but at the end of the day nothing beats the original (incl. OB-X8).
Your version of 1999 sounds ‘interesting‘, Jamie. 🥴
Have you watched Daniel Fisher Sweetwater PRO 800 x2 ? One synth panned left the other panned right…. The sound is so so rich gorgeous and satisfying NO fx are required whatsoever… No reverb no chorus no nothing.
Thank you for the video always enjoy them. I have the OBX8, got the Behringer UBXA had it for about four days then returned it. I personally did not like the key bed, definitely lacked clarity And also as you discuss in this video, hearing the separation of notes I definitely agree on that one. It is a cool piece of gear for the price though.
I imagine they will update the synth over time.
Gorgeous sounding synth you got there Jamie❤
Great to see you onboard Jaime! I'll definitely be picking up whatever you release for the UBXa. I too notice some differences vs the OBX, but to me the UBXa has a gritty kind of beauty to it, I actually dig. I am looking forward to seeing what Behringer does over the next updates to see if they can bring out some of the pretty sheen like the OBX. Cheers to you, good to see you got yours!
I actually like the sound of it when you switch off voices 9-16. It seams to articulate the individual notes better. At least when comparing to an original OBxa.. at least mine anyway
I have read the keybed is so so, not many reporting on it, not sure why, but B did tease the desktop back in 2019, I would prefer this and be happier as I have an Explorer for PAT duties.
Sure it's not full sized, but I can't fit 61 keys on my desk without losing a ton of other gear.
Thanks for the upload.
🎶🎶👍👌👌
I think you should route the signal of the ubxa through an eq and cut the super lowend off you don't need that and it's weirdly almost always there below 20hz and i don't understand why. It makes it muddy
Thanks, it has 8 'Vintage' Profiles and I was only using 1 of them in the Live Stream, which I did alter some of the settings. The 8 Profiles dramatically alter the Sounds in many ways. I'm hoping there can be User profiles added and for them to be altered and saved per/patch or that the "Vintage' settings can be altered in Mod Matrix.
I have an OB-X8 and while it does have better sound, especially when the voices are combined in the mixer section, the Behringer is not far off.
the ubie has a matrix we’re you can program voice spread and voice inconsistencies
Excited for the spring reverb ...
I absolutely love my UB-Xa. I’m big on drones and was worried by 1 dedicated LFO (and the performance one) but by using a little velocity on the LFO rate and some poly key or poly aftertouch, and you can make each voice’s LFO slightly different which makes for such rich sound.
Everyone mentions the screen. My eyes are not what they once were but I have no trouble with the screen at all. I’m maybe sitting a bit higher over the screen than the average as the space I have for the UB-Xa is a bit low for a keyboard. I’m wearing varifocal glasses.
I'm kinda leaning towards the Pro-800 but I wish it had 16 Osc's, split/ layer and poly aftertouch keyboard. Listening Uli? I'm definitely on board with the poly aftertouch. Should be on everything since it's been around since the 70's.
Isn't that what the PRO-16 will be?
@@UniQueWerkx Hoping. Not sure re poly-aftertouch. As Roger Linn has said, a modern keyboard is just a bunch of on/off switches. Not much expression going on there.
P800 is a bargain. Great sound that seems to be well calibrated (not too tightly) so that it sounds analogue but not 'broken'.
Interesting, thanks. I really prefer the sound without the chorus.
Oooooo I dont know … OB sounding? Perhaps. Not sold though.
It sounds great to me! It sounds nicer than the Oberheim Matrix 1000. I recommended that Behringer bring you on board for the patch creation of this monster! I love your patches for the Deepmind. They really highlight the diversity of that sound engine.
banks a b c d should hold 128 presets each yet i just received mine and am missing about 15 presets - the names of the presets are listed in the ub-xa manual yet only covers bank A- what about the names for the the rest of the presets in bank b c d - certain company states 512 presets yet manual states it should have 403 and mine contains 498- this is too much conflicting info...- spoke to tech and they are actively seeking a way to restore patches/presets- i love it but seems like im missing alot of the meat..
Glad theres all the hype with this poor copy... Makes my Xpander that much more special.
A really nice poly analog synth. But if I wanted the in-yer-face punch of the OB-Xa (or Obees in general), sorry I would't buy this one. The display is a complete disgrace of poor visibility, and of poor view from an angle.
Wow... that really is a huge disappointment that you can't have saw and pulse waves at the same time!! WTH?!?! Makes me lean towards the Pro 800. Not as many voices but....
Well, you can’t on the original, but you can on the Oberheim OB-X8. Having multiple wave shapes at the same time on 1 Oscillator is quite rare, The Prophet 5, Pro 600 and some other early polysynths, but it’s usually a choice of 1 wave shape for each oscillator.
@@GEOSynths I did not know it was that way on the original OB-Xa. Thank you for the rapid response and taking the time to answer! It is very appreciated!
@@GEOSynths can't you layer oscillators?
So layer 1 has SAW, then layer 2 has Pulse with the same patches?
