      It was a waste of time before. They couldn't deliver the same experience on a handheld that they could on a PC/console. Games that were ported to the switch look noticably different than there PC/console counterparts.
      The steam deck showed everyone that it could be done for PC without sacrificing the graphical quality, and now everyone is jumping on the bandwagon.

    • @1DJRikkiBee
      @1DJRikkiBee 5 месяцев назад +26

      @@castertr0y357 It was never about delivering the same experience as a home console and developers actively choose to make concessions in their games to release them on switch. Nintendo has proven that you can make expansive and interesting games on the switch for years and the switch is one of the best selling consoles of all time surpassing even the PS4. The market has always been there.

    • @castertr0y357
      @castertr0y357 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@1DJRikkiBee To my knowledge, the only games that compare on the same scope are the two Zelda games and Mario Odyssey. Those also utilize stylistic graphics instead of photorealistic graphics like PC and other consoles.
      Nintendo consoles sell extremely well because they retain the rights to arguably the most popular video game characters of all time, and their first-party releases almost always choose innovative gameplay over photorealism. Even the ported Arkham Knight game suffered graphically on the Switch simply due to the sheer lack of power the console has. It's great game that the Switch just can't keep up with. It doesn't mean that the switch is a bad console, but it lends itself more to a certain visual style.
      After the Gamecube, Nintendo chose not to compete with the rest of the consoles on pure power, but rather innovation (and occasional gimmicks). This led them down a different path of innovative hardware, but running different types of games. It had a niche, and did it well.
      However, for modern AAA games, developers don't want to put in the extra work of having to cram everything into a console that's not going to run it well. It can barely run Arkham Knight on it scaled down, and that game is almost 10 years old now.
      The technology hadn't come far enough to make a mobile device that could deliver similar performance to PC and other consoles until Valve came out with the Steam Deck. Other companies are utilizing this new technology leap and making handhelds of their own that can now match the raw hardware performance of the rest of the consoles. This now means that you can game on the go with the same power that you have in your living room.
      Nintendo was ahead of the curve before in terms of hardware experiences, but now that the technology has caught up to the uniqueness of the experience, I think Nintendo is going to have to step up the graphics part or end up going the way of Sega and being a software only company.

    • @1DJRikkiBee
      @1DJRikkiBee 5 месяцев назад

      @@castertr0y357 A few things to note. Scope and graphical style are two completely different things. Console games and PC games also release in various graphical styles that are not just photorealistic. Also if you know a bit about game rendering pipelines, photorealism doesn't always equate to needing more compute power over a stylized game.
      Arkham Knight is not a well optimized game. It had numerous issues on both console and PC launch that are well documented. It's not particularly a great metric. In fact, many large PC releases in recent history have not been optimized all that well and run somewhat poorly even on modern hardware. Starfield is another good example of that. Even the steam deck makes a great many concessions and optimizations, on both the firmware side and the game software, side just to run certain games. It's about the same as laptops, which we've had around forever.
      Nintendo has been doing the one thing that is required for mobile hardware pretty consistently, which is innovation. The 3DS adding stereoscopic vision to the handheld market was a great move. The joycons on the switch are also quite good, as well as the docking model. However, the PS Vita also had quite unique hardware. A front and rear side touch bracket with one of the highest quality accelerometers. It also revolutionized remote play at the time and they had multiple frist party titles that made use of these features. So they aren't the only company capable of making innovative handhelds.
      Now, I completely agree with your take about the way the switch needs to go. I believe Nintendo also agrees with you, because the Switch 2 is targeting a higher hardware quality, according to the information they have released so far at least. It also helps, like you said, to have developer support for making titles that make use of the unique features of the platform or are at least optimized for it.
      The steam deck, and every other handheld to an even greater extent, has that same issue, but they benefit from the fact that it's not a unique software target. This means that they also benefit from the huge pc gaming library that includes many games that don't require high powered hardware to play. Some of the most played games on steam deck aren't high fidelity PC releases, and the ones that are don't run in high quality on the deck.
      I get your points, but its somewhat disingenuous to say that hardware made a huge leap with the steam deck or that handhelds were a waste of time before now. They simply lacked a good library and steam has the best one. A PlayStation handheld that could play PS3 and a handful of PS4/PS5 games would do incredibly well in market and wouldn't have been difficult for Sony to develop. They just didn't want to because they missed one estimate one time.

    The biggest hindrance of Game Pass on any other OS than Windows is the incredibly deeply ingrained DRM methods Microsoft is using for XBOX Game Pass on PC. I doubt this would ever change.

      If we're talking about the Microsoft store, I would agree, but as he mentioned in the video, they already have their games on Steam and those games already work on Linux. All they would have to do is get Valve to set up a subscription plan like EA does with EA Play, and then anyone with the plan would get access to those games. Knowing Valve though, I'm sure they get a cut of EA's sub fee, so that may be the real hindrance for Microsoft.

    • @Th3Rom3
      @Th3Rom3 5 месяцев назад +5

      @@hueypautonoman True but remember that EA Play requires the EA Desktop App to run the actual games so even if Game Pass was available via Steam if the backend of how the games are delivered are kept the same (i.e. how EA Play does it) nothing would be gained. Technically, Microsoft didn't definitively say that Game Pass won't be on Steam Deck, but effectively it amounts to the same thing. Technically, since Game Pass on the Steam Deck would most likely be the PC version of Game Pass, which already exists and is not going away, their statement doesn't rule it out. However, since Game Pass is not a typical PC program that just has to have the correct run-time environment to work, but needs very specific parts of Windows to verify identity, it's highly unlikely to ever work on Steam Deck without Microsoft's active participation. It's a similar situation to anti-cheat. Without specific effort by the developer, it's not likely to work.

    The truth of the matter is that Valve made Steam OS/Deck to leave Windows behind. Why would Microsoft say "We agree with Valve's devision to leave us" by supporting the Steam Deck with Game Pass? Game Pass, from what I can tell, is the only thing Microsoft has left. The ROG, Leagion Go, etc. are compaines still supporting Windows because they still think Valve is interested in the hand-held world; they aren't. The hand-held was just Valve making the Steam OS/Linux gaming appealing. Valve isn't interested in supporting Game Pass either.

    • @hueypautonoman

      The ROG, Legion GO, etc. run Windows because they're made by hardware companies who don't know how to make good software, so they have to partner with Microsoft. Valve is a software company, so you're right about them wanting to push SteamOS. I think you're wrong about Microsoft though. I think they know they've already lost that battle. Steam is THE gaming platform on PC, and Microsoft can't stop that. I think the only real thing stopping them from pursuing any action for Steam Deck is market share. If SteamOS really becomes big, Microsoft will chase the money and support it, just like they did with Linux on the server side. They literally have their own Linux distribution now.

They just took Linux and said “here is our new server.” They don’t like admitting it is because Linux is so good. Plus, Azure isn’t a desktop operating system. They’re still making Windows Server stuff. They did that Azure stuff to stay relevant; however, I see your point.

      Good, because that's a waste of fucking money lol, I mean I could get the short-term benefit of it when you're trying out games, but it's not the kind of thing you want to stay on when you want to own games, like to me it just reminds me of back in the old days when we used to rent movies or even video games from Blockbuster, that's an old ass place nowadays, that place practically doesn't exist anymore, but anyway people used to go to this place to rent physical games and movies and such like that, and they would pay a weekly or a monthly subscription, hell they even had late fees for shit like that, and those late fees went and added up like crazy, I mean the subscription model works for digital, but again it's not the kind of thing you want to rely on or stay on, cuz eventually you come to realize that you waste a shitload of money in that system more than you gain, so it's really just something you use short time in order to try out a game, and if you really like that game finish that one month subscription shut it off before it renews turn around and purchase the game from somewhere else.
      However I do think they're trying to force people in the subscription crap and some games may not offer the option for you to actually purchase the game fully, they're trying to go into this you own nothing future so that they can be happy and you can be very unhappy, that shit needs to go down the drain, but unfortunately people keep paying for this shit and they basically incentivize that future that the vast majority of people don't want, I own all my games well the digital copies I guess, but the point is I haven't had to own an extra dime nickel or anything to my games over the last 15 years, I essentially defacto own them, now one day they may no longer exist on my steam store, that may happen, but it hasn't happened yet, now I know some studios are trying to go to the subscription model, but they keep stabbing themselves in the foot with this idea, especially since some CEO of a very big gaming company decided to announce that people should get comfortable with not owning their games, yeah that didn't exactly go too well and the view of their company, and now people are hating them even more so, so that is something that most people don't want.

      @@sumomaster5585 it doesn't really change it that much since most games are made for Windows. Valve has just spend ages on paying for development of making Windows games run on Linux (called Proton).
      Microsoft themselves would probably still make their games for Windows in mind then just use Proton to make it work on Steam Deck/Linux. It is primarily Microsofts own games that are on Game Pass, they could only accept PC games for Windows from 3rd parties on Game Pass.
      So a reason to do it would be to get Steam Deck users to buy and use Game Pass (without using cloud which Microsoft has actually bothered to support through Edge, lol).
      Then a reason to not do it if Microsoft wants to more heavily compete in the handheld OS market with special Windows version made for such devices, like Steam OS (3) is made for handhelds in mind as well (so far only officially exist on Steam Deck but Valve does plan on having it on 3rd party handhelds too).

Part of the perk to GP is always getting discounts on games in the service, esoecially when/if the game is leaving. They want you building a library of games on the app jsut as you have been or did on the console. Even if GP users don't buy many games directly form the app, im sure they're happy if you even buy 1 or if you purchase microtransactions on a game in GP, they would prefer you to do so on GP than on other platforms.
    Also, I'm not so sure Valve would even want GP on steam.. that would subtract from a lot of sales on steam from some of xbox's bigger games like when CoD drops. I'm not so inclined to bleeive steam would agree to GP. Remember, GP is not like EA play, or UBI +. GP has a mixture of 3rd party games, their own games and day1 games.

    It's basically business reasons with regards to software licenses that Microsoft profits from. If they brought Gamepass to the Steam Deck, that'd mean making it functional on Linux. For years they've argued that most of their own software would never work on Linux (such as Microsoft Office). Microsoft makes a ton of money from the services they provide to companies, and a lot of companies run Microsoft software that Microsoft has made incompatible with other operating systems, even through advanced compatibility layers, for the purpose of charging the companies for bulks of Windows OS licenses. If Microsoft ported Gamepass to Linux, it would demonstrate that there's not really anything stopping all the rest of their software from running on Linux, therefore causing a non-zero amount of corporations to start demanding the rest of the Microsoft software suite to be ported to Linux so they can stop paying for hundreds of Windows OS licenses.
    Gamepass is, of course, a very small service in comparison to their more industrial software suites, and it's only aimed at end-users rather than corporations, but it's important enough for Microsoft's business model to never make it available for Linux.

      Of course it's shackled to windows it's a built in application. It doesn't even play to pc versions of most games on the platform it plays the xbox versions. Linux is also 4% of pc their not gonna make something for 4% of the market. Just look at Rainbow six that game won't run under Linux or a windows virtual machine but all ubisoft has to do is flip a switch.

      Those games play the windows version of the game. It's different from the steam version for pc. Like it's connected to Xbox servers and you only get access to the Xbox versions most time. Unless the game comes with a launcher from the publisher. You also can only play with Xbox users.

    Good time for me to stop my subscription to their services. I still think they have a very good offer but my backlog is huge anyways and the few games I played I could have bought instead, if I add the monthly fees paid in a year compared to the handful of games I really played…
    Cool video, thanks !

    I’m switching to steam deck from Xbox it’s not a big deal to not easily access game pass for me and the only way I can justify paying 550 for an oled steam deck is by using it to replace my Xbox I’ll still play on the Xbox I have lots of games on Xbox that I won’t be buying again on steam but I want to switch over to mostly handheld and the switch doesn’t get a lot of the games im interested in anymore so I guess the deck is replacing that too not a big deal but it will be nice to get off of console and have the freedom to take console games with me anywhere I go

    That's the downside of being an early adopter of high end gaming handhelds. You kinda got burned because nobody ever thought about this in the early years, now it just takes too much cooperation between competitors.

    10 years from now, Valve could dominate the market if they capitalise on Steam Deck and SteamOS. Besides the Steam Deck, they aren't doing much but all the ingredients are falling into Valve's soup and somehow Valve is cooking and it tastes good. You have an entire library of Nintendo IPs through emulation, you have xbox first party games on steam, you have playstation first party games on steam, you have cloud gaming options for xbox and playstation on top of your entire steam library and your PC game/app library through proton. It is just mind blowing how easy it is to own one device for your entire library. Not to mention, it can be your linux desktop computing machine too.

Also, your community of followers have good discussions and comments. There are many channels which seem alright, but seem to attract the weirdest people. Spawn Wave and BeatEmUps in particular just have the strangest communities imo, I facepalm at nearly every comment and community poll for those channels

    I enjoy Game Pass now. Two years ago the offering wasn't great. I got the steam deck and didn't enjoy cloud gaming. Now I have the Rog Ally and have finish a couple of the newer Yakuza games, Doom Eternal, and Lies of P via game pass on the Ally. Even great PS5 streaming while traveling on Ally. Currently playing Persona 3 Reloaded on Ally via gamepass. My steam deck is my Steam game and emulation machine. My Ally is for everything else.

    By installing Edge on Steam Deck, its possible to play xCloud Game Pass games (ie just streaming them). Considering Steam Deck is Linux based, Microsoft would have to embrace Linux even more, make developers have a Linux based version of their games...

    • @UmVtCg
      @UmVtCg 5 месяцев назад +3

      No, they could just use a compatibility layer like Wine or Proton. Make developers create a Linux version ain't gonna work. Also, a Linux open source devs can break a game by an update. So developers have to continuously update their games. Windows does not have this problem, running Windows games through a compatibility layer is sometimes better for that reason.

    The way Sony has forced people to buy a PS4 or PS5 copy of their games will surely go against them if they bring out a handheld. Do I get a licence for the PS4 version of cross gen titles that I bought on PS5 so I can download and play on the handheld (which will presumably run PS4 versions).

    I really wish they'd just pull an EA and drop their games onto Steam with a subscription (EA Play already shows this is achievable and works). Gabe's said in the past that he would support them with it, so it's literally just Microsoft blocking positive progress.

    Microsoft would not have to make a deal with Valve, The Steam Deck has a fully open operating system it's not like a console. Just go into desktop mode (KDE) and run whatever you want.
    The real problem is Microsoft don't want to port UWP to Linux, no dev is gonna even bother to reverse engineer that nonsense. Their plan was to lock their devs to DirectX to force people to use Windows. The fact that people reverse engineered DirectX and translated it to Vulkan and Valve funds it I'm sure pisses them off, especially as in a lot of cases the translation runs better than native which is insane, look at how bad their own translation layer from old DX versions to 12 runs and they have the source code.
    To think DXVK and VKD3D was written by 2 people, one of them just wanted to play Nier on Linux, the other wanted to play older directx games on their Windows phone and did it as a bet because someone said it was impossible.

    Sending game-time? Personally if there was an option to turn off sending game-time, I'd turn it off. I don't like anything being sent from my computer. (Please let me know if there's an option🙏🏻)
    As a player, I never buy first game in a series on a machine, that the sequels won't come out on.
