Emirates A380 Crew Confused By Gate Allocation In Toronto

  • Parking the colossal Airbus A380 is a precise job, and the superjumbo can only fly to certain airports owing to its size. Even then, the allocation of a large enough gate is paramount. You can never be too careful with such matters, and this recently led to confusion in Toronto after an Emirates Airbus A380 touched down.

It is 100% acceptable for a pilot to reject a gate clearance and request another gate, if they feel the safety of their aircraft is in question, in this case the crew did the correct thing and halted the aircraft whilst they asked for clarification from ATC, excellent example of pilots following their paperwork and SOP.

By the same token, pilots maintain situational awareness when taxiing on the ground, and would always question an instruction if they thought it was unsafe. I work at Toronto Pearson Airport. C34 was renovated to accommodate the Airbus A380 specifically for Emirates. The renovation took a very long time to construct and that gate was inoperable for nearly a year. In terms of gating and terminal use, Terminal 1 is for airlines that are a part of Star Alliance (which Emirates is not a part of) and Terminal 3 is for all other airlines. This caused a lot of tension between the airline and the airport after C34 was fully renovated because Emirates refused to switch over to Terminal 3. A lot of money was spent on the renovation just to only be used by an A380 a few times.

There's way more to the story that kinda interesting, based on the ATC recording, couple of things happen at the same time to cause all the confusion:
    1) Emirate's paperwork stated a section of Taxiway A is red (no go), while Toronto has recheck/confirmed that A380 can taxi on A (someone didn't update the paperwork)
    2) There's a NOTAM about the Taxiway being red for A380, but the date for the NOTAM doesn't apply to the date when this event occur, and the pilot misread the date on the NOTAM til later on in the conversation (which the pilot acknowledge)
    3) Both the Pilot and the YYZ Ground was stuck in their own way for a moment (Pilot don't wanna go through A for safety reason, Ground want Pilot to go in because the taxiway is approved)
    4) Finally Both side come to compromise: They will Taxi through the "red" section of A and park at gate C34A with the wing walker for safety.
Both side actually handle the situation really well, but the better lesson is this is the best way to resolve conflict: find out the problem, and focus on resolving the problem at hand.

Terminal 3 did make renovations recently to accommodate such jumbo jets, ATC at YYZ and Emirates both handled the situation well. C34 & C30 gates are suitable for an A380. The designers at Airbus specifically designed the A380 so it could go wherever a B747 could go, that includes runways and taxiways. Thus anywhere a B747 can go an A380 can also.!

At my home airport, Singapore Changi, Singapore Airlines uses most of its A380s at Terminal 3. Only gates B2, B4, B5, B7, A2, A4, A5 and A7 at Terminal 3 typically see the A380. I reckon at Toronto, its even fewer than that. I wonder if the Emirates crew always use the same gates when they bring the big bird into Toronto? If so, the unusual gate allocation will already give the error away, instead of needing to look at his airport charts to see the taxiways are not appropriate.

    • @lzh4950

Think some airports do usually assign the same few gates to each airline e.g. HKG usually gives gates 15-19 to SIA probably as those are the closest to its lounge there

My thought is that if you have a system for moving that sort of information around between parties, and it does not provide a place for the person originating and unusual order to put a... five or six word explanation in, then you should take your it designers out and lay them down in the middle of the runway.

The pilot did the right thing. He is in charge of his aircraft and is ultimately responsible for it's safety. My question is why did his airport chats say yhat the route yo the gate was not suitable for the A380. If they were out of date then that is a problem as all chsrts in the aircraft are stored in the computer system. This would mean that the the aircraft was flying with charts that were not current which from what I understand is not looked upon by the authorities to kindly.
As for the congestion excuse for the gate change, oI don't buy that as we are still in a covid plagued world and the air traffic is still far beliw what it was pre pandemic. This smells of airport politics to me. I actually flew into CYYZ w weeks ago and the Emirates A380 was parked at T1 in it's nirmal gate. I would have been oissed if I were waiting for someone on that flight because the airport website last I checked had Emirates at T1. Having to go to T3 would have taken time and the extra cost of having to pay for parking again at T3.

Obviously, ATC in Toronto was not on top of their game. To use the excuse of congestion is ridiculous if all the other international flights are anything but A380s. Stack them and pack them but make sure you leave the proper gates available for the A380s since there will not be many of them.
This seems more like a result of poor planning and oversight in Toronto.

    • @rault4
      @rault4 2 года назад +1

My understanding is that "congestion" in this case refers to customs and immigration processing, not apron capacity. YYZ T1 is currently undergoing a massive renovation, and CBSA capacity in the terminal has been significantly reduced as a result. This, combined with COVID-related distancing protocols, means that and A380's-worth of passengers would totally overwhelm the system. By having the flight arrive at T3 instead (and, to be clear, T3 does have proper A380-compatible gates, they just don't show up on Emirates' paperwork) the passengers on that flight were able to use the fully-functional CBSA facilities (and probably cleared into Canada significantly faster as a result).
