I'm currently (as in last night I hid under a duvet for over an hour just hoping it would go away before finally grabbing myself by the scruff of the neck and getting up and doing something, which is always my personal therapy) going through quite a dark patch. There are several good reasons for this but what I wanted to highlight is one thing you said - we are in a world now where being "strong and silent" isn't necessary any more and the support networks that have sprung up around me personally (and others) over the past few months have been such a support and a benefit when that Black Dog is barking at me and threatening to drag me down. Sorry to hear that, man. For whatever it may be worth, I have depression. I've still got a broken leg. Wife keeps having strokes, lost her job, can't talk some days. And she was the bread winner. So we can pay rent, but are worried about food and medicine now. And my car broke down (transmission failure). Anyways, if you want to talk or vent or something, I might be able to relate.
