Listen: Plants Cry When Dehydrated Or Their stems Are Torn Screaming Sounds Recorded For The First Time.
Plants emit ultrasonic sounds in rapid bursts when stressed, scientists say
Thirsty or damaged plants produce up to 50 staccato pops in an hour, which nearby creatures may respond to, researchers find
    Ian Sample
Scientists detect ultrasonic popping sounds from plants when they are deprived of water - audio
There comes a time in a plant’s life when the head sags, the leaves go pale and the body releases a barrage of sounds that are the ultrasonic equivalent of stamping on bubble wrap.
While any gardener is familiar with the wilting and discoloration that comes with drought, a shortage of water or a sudden wound can also prompt plants to produce staccato pops, which nearby creatures may respond to, scientists say.
The discovery, described as “exciting and thought-provoking” by one independent expert, suggests the plant kingdom is not as silent as it seems, and that ultrasonic sounds emitted from plants might even help shape their ecosystems.
“When these plants are in good shape, they produce less than one sound per hour, but when stressed they emit many more, sometimes 30 to 50 per hour,” said Prof Lilach Hadany, an evolutionary biologist and theoretician at Tel Aviv University.
“They are potentially important because other organisms could have evolved to hear these sounds and interpret them,” she added. “We are now testing both animals and plants to see if they respond.”
Hadany and her colleagues recorded sounds produced by tomato and tobacco plants raised in greenhouses. Healthy plants emitted clicks and pops, but the sounds came in far more rapid bursts when the plants were deprived of water or had their stems cut. The noises could be picked up 3-5 metres away.
If plants are so intelligent, should we stop eating them?
    Emma Beddington
At 40 to 80kHz, the sounds are too high-pitched for the human ear, which has an upper range of about 20kHz. But insects such as moths and small mammals including mice can detect such frequencies, raising the prospect that the noises might influence their behaviour.
Writing in Cell, the scientists describe how the plants’ sounds are as loud as human speech and are emitted more frequently after two days without water. The pops peak at day five or six and then subside as the plant dries up.
On recording the sounds, the researchers trained an artificial intelligence algorithm to identify the plant and the cause of its stress from the popping noise alone. It was not 100% accurate, but demonstrates that the sounds contain information that might be useful to organisms in the environment, they say.
There is no evidence the sounds are an attempt to communicate, any more than a log declares distress by crackling on a fire. But Hadany said the sounds might nonetheless be useful for nearby creatures, perhaps affecting which plants animals feed on or where insects lay their eggs. It is unclear what creates the sounds, but the authors suspect a process called cavitation, where water columns in dehydrated plant stems break down, generating air bubbles.
Whether or not anything is listening to the sounds, Hadany says the discovery could make irrigation more efficient by using microphones alongside other sensors to detect when plants are short on water.

Plants don’t have a nervous system, consciousness, or a brain, and therefore can’t suffer or experience pain. However a cow can. If I had a knife and was going to either A - use it on a dog or B - use it on a cactus plant, which would be the correct ethical decision? Plants may make a cry like sound, but again, no pain receptor, no vocal cords and no sentience. Tomatoes don’t scream in pain lol.

I remember when i was about 6 years old asking my Mother about this as she was a keen gardener. She said no don't be silly as she was cutting flower heads. I said to her, well plants need sun, water, food (soil) etc and they grow from a small seed like us i wonder if they talk to each other in the garden in a language we cant hear. She laughed and said that is some imagination. Funny a few years later we were all watching the TV and Tales Of The Unexpected came on and to my mothers amazement it was a episode all about a man that has a machine that tunes into the frequency of plant, flowers, tree's etc and can hear them express pain when cut etc.
PS Also on a side note, my mother used to take a little battery radio into the garden greenhouse, since she had taken that radio in there the tomato, cucumber crop had been twice as good as the pervious years. Just sayin

In my other study, a drinking glass screams as it crashes down the floor thereby signaling me to check it out and prevented our cat from pushing down the other glasses.

    Item #: SCP-4521
    Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4521 is to be kept in Site-551's Bioterrarium and only accessible by personnel with Level 2 clearance or higher. Additionally, attempts are to be made daily in an attempt to provoke vocalizations from SCP-4521.
Description: SCP-4521 is a Douglas fir tree with abnormal shape and leaves. SCP-4521 was discovered within God's Silence, Oregon after reports of an "ear piercing silence" from within the tree's vicinity. Amnestics were administered, and SCP-4521 was transported by implanted Foundation agents to Site-551.
Currently, SCP-4521's anomalous property is that it is incapable of screaming. No apparatuses are found on SCP-4521 that allow it to scream, and attempting to create one has been met with failure (see testing log). Attempts are being made to provoke screaming within SCP-4521.
No memetic or cognitohazardous phenomena originate from or affect SCP-4521. Multiple attempts using several other anomalies have been made to detect any screaming, but no screaming was detected.
Test Log: The following are attempts made by on-site personnel to eliminate SCP-4521's anomalous ability.
    Test 1: Carve a mouth on SCP-4521.
Outcome: Several holes were placed upon SCP-4521 using a chainsaw. No screaming appears to emanate from these holes.
Test 2: Use an extremely hot branding iron to imprint the word "SLAVE" onto the base of the tree.
Outcome: No screaming detected. Brand disappeared within 2 days time.
Test 3: Place multiple species of spiders upon SCP-4521's base.
Outcome: No screaming detected. Approximately 30% continued to stay on the tree. 50% of the spiders that stayed burrowed further into the tree. No screaming was detected during this time.
Test 4: Take a tree that is genetically similar/related to SCP-4521, and slowly destroy it in a close radius around it.
Outcome: Tree successfully destroyed over the course of 28 hours. No screaming detected.
Test 5: Take a tree that is genetically similar/related to SCP-4521, and [REDACTED].
Outcome: [REDACTED BY REQUEST OF ETHICS COMMITTEE]. No screaming detected.
Test 6: Use a D-Class personnel under the effects of mnestics in the event that SCP-4521's screaming is antimemetic.
    Outcome: No screaming detected.
Test 7: Attempt to communicate with SCP-4521.
    Outcome: See attached audio file.

Dr. Hanz: Can you hear me? Can you even hear me while you're trapped in your mind? Can you see me through the foggy, muddy waters that are your eyes?
    Silence
Dr. Hanz: Come on, the deafening silence is killing me! If you don't want to speak, or at least scream, the tests will continue. It's only healthy.
    Silence
Dr. Hanz: P-please! You're scaring me!
    Silence
Dr. Hanz: Y-you know… when I was a kid, I… I assaulted a kid. I took a bike lock and crushed his skull in. It went on for 6 minutes before being stopped by one of his friends, who I also clocked in the head. I went down the street, and I saw this lady. She fell off her bike. It was the same bike I stole the bike lock from.
    Silence
Dr. Hanz: I took that bike, cut it up into several small, tingly pieces, and fed her the bike, over the course of several hours. She just laid there with her broken leg, and her stomach eventually ruptured. The black ooze that dripped from her stomach indicated that someone might have called the cops, so I went home, and locked my room. Do you want to know what I did?
    Silence
Dr. Hanz: I screamed. I opened my mouth and let out the largest roar that was trapped at the bottom of my lungs. All those wasted opportunities, all those memories, fading away as the calming ring of my torn voice box filled the room. And look where I ended up! I got a doctorate and I'm working for one of the best organizations on Earth. It's not too late!
    Silence
Dr. Hanz: Or… you haven't felt that thrill yet, haven't you. Typical. Outcasts like you, born in some random remote part of Siberia, no other individual in sight. You're too weak to impress anyone, so you just stay by yourself. I see your game.
    Silence
Dr. Hanz: But I can help you! You need to scream!
    Silence
Dr. Hanz: You need to scream! You need to scream! You need to scream!
Dr. Hanz proceeds to say the exact same phrase for 37 hours before being escorted out by onsite guards in order to prevent death by dehydration.
After waking from a short 4 hour nap, Dr. Hanz promised that he "will not stop until this tree finally screams." Testing is to continue.

"Though we may hear this information and feel compassion for the plants' pain, there is no definitive evidence to date that plants have "feelings" in the human sense of the term, Hadany said.
"I think we are not there yet," she said.
"We cannot say the plant feels stress and therefore makes sounds. It might be that the sounds are made completely passively, like a physical process," she said."
This is literally written on the study, but you guys left it out, i wonder why?

They have stated the logic of thr sound, and it does not suggest crying or hurting.
Why do humans like to humanise things that are not made as humans? 🤦🏿‍♂️ And in thr end still treat their fellow humans worst 🤷🏿 I do not understand it.

Animal agriculture actually kills far more plants than vegans do. A vast majority of agricultural land is used to graze livestock and to produce their feed.
Also, the word "scream" was never cited in the study. Nor was "suffering" or "pain". This sound is simply cavitation: a release of gas after damage to the organism. Response to a stimulus in this way does not equate to the same pain livestock feel in the slaughterhouse.
