Solas's Role in Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Solavellan Hell Over?

  • Since the ending of the Trespasser DLC in 2015, a strong and clear motivation was set for the Inquisitor, the remnants of the Inquisition and the new hero in the next Dragon Age game: should they attempt to redeem Solas or seek his demise?
    Whether an elven god can truly be defeated is uncertain, but the expectation was clear: the player’s choice regarding Solas's fate must be resolved in the next game.
    And it brings me so much joy to say that BioWare have confirmed closure and a varied conclusion based on our choices for Solas’s narrative in the next Dragon Age. Which, as a Solavellan, is something so so many of us are ecstatic to hear.
    Game Informer’s Wesley LeBlanc recently spent time with several DA developers and discussed the game in depth. One of the most fascinating topics he uncovered was Solas’s role in The Veilguard and his ultimate conclusion.
    Today, we’re diving into the new bond Rook will form with Solas as the plot takes a different direction. We'll also discuss the varied endings Solas could have. Spoiler warning for those who don’t want to know anything about the latest GI details on DA:TV

      sadly the original story of him was probably better . its not called the dreadwolf for a reason.
      the story was rewritten again like 2 years ago and Solas seems to be downgraded to a soft loser antagonist we will likely have to save instead of the dreadwolf who want to destroy the world we were promised for a decade.

    Given the gems all over Solas' banter with other companions, having him commenting on things like SAM has a huge potential for hilarity to insue.
    I really don't want to believe he would resort to Red Lyrium, given his aversion to Blight Magic, I'm hoping even when desperate he wouldn't cross that line.
    I badly want a happy Solavellan ending to exist...I don't necessarily want that ending to be easy to get, but I want it to be possible!
    And now I am curious about those potential younger Solas (with hair) flashbacks.

    I'm glad they considered the 'players who want to kick Solas off a building'. :') I was very worried we'll be shoehorned into a mild and completely-cooperative arc to keep the plot going, offering little room to roleplay or just even play.
    What you theorised at the end about Solas using red lyrium to further is plan, fits very well with his prideful nature, believing himself and only himself capable of righting every wrong, and harkens back to the conclusion of In Hushed Whispers, where he refused to believe he could succumb to red lyrium.
    Thank you for making these videos, Jack. Much appreciated.

    Maybe we could consider Solas actually succeeding in the end... Just not the way we think. I mean, he is so certain that the only way to restore the world of the ancient elves involves the destruction of current Thedas. But really, we only have his word for it. Maybe there is another way.

    • @Theater00jock
      @Theater00jock 2 месяца назад +4

      I think this is definitely possible. In gameplay Solas said he took steps to limit the casualties, which would tell us that his plan no longer required the death of all of Thedas. That was his original plan 10 years before, but they've obviously changed.

      I think if he did succeed, the Elves would end up in another civil war since it’s possible that not all Elves would join Solas. Plus, Elves who have never used magic before, would likely suffer from shock of having such power and would become vulnerable to evil spirits.

    • @anvos658
      @anvos658 Месяц назад +1

      The issue is there is no way to restore the world of the ancient elves, elves aren't the leaders in magic anymore and are a population vulnerable to extinction from such a massive catastrophe. Solas is also an idiot who forgot to account for just how strong the remaining ancient high dragons and Blighted Ancient Tevintar will be in a world without the veil.

  • @purplecritter

    I do think it would be fun if Solas' fate depends on both his relationship with Rook and the Inquisitor's disposition towards him. Maybe for him to be truly "redeemed" both our protagonists need to convince him, and viceversa if only one or both believe him to be irredeemable he will have a different ending. Not sure how that would feel for new players who haven't played Trespasser, but the Inquisitor is already confirmed to be a major role regardless sooo

As for the Hero of Ferelden, I hope they either give some lore references that they did find a cure and is alive and well or not mention them at all: if they say something like "they disappeared never to be seen again" or "they died in a random cave fighting darkspawn" it's going to feel like a massive anticlimatic let down for me (and I'm wagering many others).

    I have a theory about Solas too. What if by creating the Veil he also stripped himself of his power as a god to the extent that his dark Wolf identity is trapped somewhere in the Black City along with the others. So his relatively weak, but more logical and compassionate self being locked up in the Black City means that he is running out of time till the Wolf finds his way back into the other part of his being. Maybe that is why he is depicted as a monster on this fresco. Maybe Solas knew this would happen to him after tearing down the Veil, and he did not want Lavellan to bear witness... Or am I mad?

      I feel like that's not going to be quite it because in both post trespasser ending slides if you romance him and I believe in Tevinter Nights its mentioned that Solas takes the form of that giant wolf in the Fades. helping the elves in their current form is impossible to do without some bloodshed, the best way to help them would once again be to give them their own homeland, but I feel that none of the human kingdoms would willingly give that. as long as the elves don't have their own homeland, their position is threatened and because of our character, whatever it is, it hardly changes the attitude of all kingdoms towards the elves. + I think the elves have the right to keep their ways if they want. I don't care what the original purpose of tattoos was, they have a different purpose today. A real life example of this is the cross, originally a Roman instrument of torture and execution, nowadays a symbol of hope...etc etc etc... I'll probably help Solas myself, of course to see if it's possible to bring the world back to its original "glory"... "you can't make an omelette without breaking a couple of eggs", etc. it's going to be messy but "it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make".(; but if "resetting the world" is not possible, then I will help the elves in all other ways.(if possible) I think the world would be more interesting if there was an own kingdom for the elves, alternatively it could be interesting to see a post-apocalyptic Thedas / world in future games, to see how "the return of magic affected" what new threats and dangers it would bring. how civilizations would rebuild and adapt to a changed world. + technically those gods were freed because of player interference and not because of Solas. Solas wanted to move them to a new prison, the old one was falling apart. so technically it's the player's fault that those two angry and corrupt "gods" are free. Solas can be blamed for planning and implementing the end of the world, but not for releasing those gods. + "the end of the world" and the beginning of a new world would be a memorable ending and what it meant for survivors and potential new conflicts and stories is limitless. Imagine what great new threats and stories it would bring + the end of the world is not new to this world. many civilizations fell because of the Blight. Blight is like the end of the world especially the first one was like that. something big has to happen to the world, for me at least "status quo" would be a boring way to end the game something big has to happen at the end, something that points to the next game and its events. and at least to me, "the end of the world" and the "beginning of a new world" would be a grandiose way to end the game. it would be interesting to see the rebuilding of civilizations and empires and kingdoms. and so on. maybe it's forced maybe it's dictated by fate maybe the only thing we can do is try to minimize the damage it causes. maybe we could decide who suffers the most. + if it is really possible to break Fade, maybe in the future someone will try it again. maybe it's better to tear it up now and try to do it in a controlled way anyway. with the guidance of its creator.

Seems like the part of himself Solas sees in Rook is how he unintentionally fucked thing up unleashing the two Elvhen, just like how Solas fucked up when creating the veil and limiting access to magic. I can already see the free therapy from Rook (on a good path) working through that and trying to fix things rather than start over and dismissing the status quo and how that will cause Solas to reflect. Not sure how complicated it would be narratively, but I think Solas's redemption might be layered. First, it seems likely he will be indirectly responsible for Varric's death -- and there when it happens. Especially given that they've made it clear in their non-game stories that Solas cares about Varric. If you add that to a good relationship with Rook and then a romanced Lavellan, then maybe the game would allow for a redemption arc. (Sort of harkening back to ME2 here---since they layered survival of party members with multiple choices. So, I think it might be possible.)

  • @flooferdoofer

    So you're saying;
    Option 1: Solas gets freed, gets cleansed and settles down with Lavellan. With everyone somehow forgiving him.
    Option 2: Rook manages to convince Solas to throw all his decade old plans out the window and just admit defeat.. and stays in his prison?
    Option 3: The devs force us to witness the death of our previous character, and only that will convince Solas to give up instead of wanting more revenge? I'd think without Lavellan he'd have even less reason to see the good of the current state of Thedas.
    Option 4: He eats Red Lyrium in an attempt to escape, while the Tainted Evanuris have been tainted for millenia and never got out. Plus this new prison is even stronger.
    Option 5: He'll just die alone in the Fade. Just gave up and wastes away.
    Option 6: Solas completely looses himself and becomes that what he's fought against.
    I'm sorry but none of these feel very.. Solas-y nor very well thought out. With all due respect, I have to disagree.
    Solas sees himself as the underdog, a misunderstood hero. He thinks he's doing the right thing, or at least making amends.
    But these thoughts come from his own hubris combined with having worked on his own most of the time. He's not used to relying on others.
    I think Solas will try to manipulate Rook into executing his plans by talking him into things. Solas loves to answer questions and monologue, and he believes his ideas are right and just.
    We will be making our own decisions for each situation though, either blindly following Solas' words, going against him or somewhere in between. Whatever floats our boat at that time.
    (I mean, this is a game where we make our own choices, despite there being a Bioware canon. So having a linear path when cooperating with Solas is unlikely)
    Rook will resolve issues in their own way, which will determine what our relationship with Solas is in the end. By that time new players will also have caught up to getting to know him.
    Que the big buildup to an angsty finale of some sorts. Who knows he might even become a demon, getting pulled out of the Fade the wrong way and becoming the next big evil.
    Solas is being portrayed as the anti hero, not seeing his own flaws. So he'd need to go through some redemption arc before his grand finale.
    And whatever the ending of Veilguard would be, I doubt it would he as simple as holding Lavellan's hand as they walk into the sunset together..
    I expect Solas to sacrifice himself instead of living through this. And the Inquisitor (whether romanced or not) forgiving him in the end (or saying good riddance)

    I'm not sure that Solas is even planning on mass genocide anymore. Yes, he used to believe that was the only way. But he tells Varric he took steps to limit casualties (which, imo, could be dialogue based on his relationship level with the inquisitor). That is directly in opposition to what he originally told us 10 years before. I think that we will learn that Solas's plan no longer involves the destruction of all Thedas. That there will surely be casualties as demons enter, but that once the ritual is complete he will be able to bring down the veil and still save most of Thedas.

    There is no happy end for the elves to tearing down the veil as the only person who wins there is Tevintar, since they possess the most and strongest mages on the planet currently, meaning they are the only people/nation that could survive the veil being torn down. Also take a moment to think what the rest of the surviving blighted magister lords and dragon priests would be like in a world without the veil and where wielding high magic is easy. Not to mention the surviving Ancient High Dragons would pretty much be gods again with their power boosted by no veil.

  • @dacastardust

    I'm really starting to get the impression that there's going to be at least two endings to Veilguard: either Rook develops a positive relationship with Solas, manages to reason with him and with Lavellan/bestie Inky, finally change his mind and everyone together turns their attention to the real big bad - OR - Rook develops a negative relationship with Solas, inadvertently reinforcing his ideals and plans and pushing him even further down the road to destruction, leaving him so far gone that even Lavellan/bestie Inky can't change his mind, and he succeeds (or dies trying).
    I also think there will be the option to let him die alone or not. If you hate him, leave him in the dirt alone - or, if you love him, you can hold him and stay with him so he at least doesn't have to die alone (despite his actions).
    It would surprise me if no matter what you do in Veilguard, it has no bearing on the ending - if that makes sense?

    I've been very much against the idea of Solas getting redeemed/getting his happy ending with the Inquisitor. I intend to be adversarial with him as Rook, no matter how much the game tries to force me to understand/like him. But Jack's idea that he would end up trying to help the Dalish rebuild after the events of this game is intriguing. I could definitely see and accept an ending where Solas has to give up all of his magic and godly gifts to shut down the Fade/stop the bad guys and devote himself as a mortal to helping not his elves, but the downtrodden Dalish elves that exist now. Essentially, this would be Solas losing the thing most dear to him, his magic, as a result of his actions. This would fit nicely with the idea of his pride in his own power being the primary issue with him and would represent a loss to him worse than just dying to him.
    With an ending like this, everyone would get what they want, Solavellans get their romance/redemption, those who befriended him get closure but Solas still pays for his actions. Moreover, it fits with the element of the world passing on to the new generation of heroes as it removes the Inquisitor and Solas off the board as future companions.

  • @Formoka
    @Formoka 2 месяца назад +6

    I know the Solavellans wouldn’t like this theory, but I think Solas dying in the Inquisitor’s arms, would be kind of poetic. After all his fears and all his pain, he fails, but the worst doesn’t come to pass. He’s not alone. He’s with friends/his lover and he finally gets to rest after a lifetime of regrets and mistakes. It would be heart breaking for some, but Solas dying would wrap up everyone’s different opinions on him and everyone’s different choices neatly. Without leading to disparate endings like ME3.

      If they did this, they would not be able to conceivably make a sequel taking both into account. Either the veil will always be taken down, or the veil will stay up.
      A branching path for something like this would literally be impossible. It would be like if Origins allowed the darkspawn to win based on your choices. They wouldn’t be able to make a sequel that would encompass branching paths like that.

    I would rather my Inquisitor be the one to confront Johnny Solas-Hand, and at the END of the major events, not the beginning. The eight year time-skip is also a bad thing since it fast-forwards us past the best of the major events. With Solas trapped, I don't see any good point in the story for the Inquisitor to arrive and confront Solas. Nor do I see anything Solas does with Rook to be plausible past that point. Solas helping Rook isn't going to get him any closer to bringing down the veil, so Solas is essentially no longer a threat. Which means no real reason for the Inquisitor or Rook to convince him anyway. At best, all I see happening is the Inquisitor or Rook finding a way to restore Elvhenan without destroying the veil.
    I could see Solas showing Rook how much better things were in his world, with beings not having to worry about a great risk of death or aging, and how reality could be sculpted by mere thought back then, but that's still not a convincing argument for destroying the veil. Solas could also show how the real world is full of corruption and death, but that's just an argument for fixing those things or making improvements, not tearing it all down. Plus, Solas is going to have a hard time convincing us if the taint is just the result of the evanuris' mad quest for more power anyway.
    All in all, I think BioWare has lost the plot here. This was supposed to be about our Inquisitor finding people Solas didn't know so he could be tracked down and stopped, and possibly so evidence could be gathered showing that Solas didn't have to destroy this world. This is all thrown to the wayside by some random stranger in a bar who helped Harding push a statue over, and Neve who somehow managed to sense Solas' ancient elvhen magic in a city built on ancient elvhen magic. Now everything is on Rook, and I doubt that during these quests we're going to find out a whole lot about the various places promised to us over the last decade. Seems like Tevinter, Nevarra, Antiva, Weisshaupt, etc. will all just be stages for the new combat and main plots to take place. We won't actually get to "live" in Tevinter and see the day-to-day life or explore its peoples, politics, and problems. This is probably going to be even more topical and shallow than DA2.

    He walked among both 'The People' and the 'Forgotten Ones' while both trusted him, as the Inquisition trusted him, as most of us trust him. But the Forgotten Ones were elves, and they seem to be gone. The last of the untainted Pantheon seems to be Solas. Mythal seems to be gone.
    Now Solas seems imprisoned, ready to advise Rook, to draw parallels between them, telling Rook secrets and steps to take, guilting Rook with accusation of a mistake that put tainted ancient Elvhen into Thedas. Does Solas mean to destroy Thedas except for elves and have the magic back as he rules? 🤔
