Making a Throwing Knife Target

I decided to make a throwing knife target out of some blocks of wood I had lying around! They're a little hard right now, but I think they'll soften up as they age and rot, making it easier for knives to stick

Came here because of burning rocket thingies but appearantly you do more interesting stuff like this!
Cool target but i gotta ask... Why not making it end grain? I have not tried end grain but appearantly its like a knifethrowers dream.
This all from a guy who occasionaly tosses a knife against some sad wooden board.
