I’ve often stated my respect and admiration for R R. I really like Arlie’s approach, smarts and calm. My thanks to both Robert and Arlie for their genius.
It's good to hear Hochschild saying this. As a poor white person I've been saying it to my liberal Oregonian friends, family, and neighbors for decades. The problems are based on classism not just racism and classism is not being addressed leaving poor white people left behind.
The feeling of others cutting in line. Unfortunately some worldviews emphasize feelings (*cough* religion *cough* ideology *cough* dogma) over critical thinking that tries to use countermeasures against human biases that are counterproductive to good thinking. Get a mass of people so flustered, without the time to be able to think deeply, but only to feel deeply and just trying to survive, and you can more easily rile them up into mobs with torches and pitchforks.
Professor Robert Reich, I just got Arlie's books, and in particular "Strangers in Their Own Land". Thanks a lot for bringing Arlie to Inequality Media Civic Action. Towards the end you ask her about what kind of leader do we need, and it came to my mind, one like Barack Obama, one that is kind, considerate, and articulate, in his law degree, one that can understand the legislative process, and knows what is going on. In this terms, because everything starts with contracts, people go to the law offices, and draft contracts then go to the banks to get financing, then to the government to get laws passed. Those leaders, must be able to draw knowledge from experts from the various fields, finance, medicine, chemistry, engineering, and anything else whatever is at stake. We need those leaders in the House, the Senate, and at the Presidency, backed by their fellow leaders in the many US Government Departments and Agencies. To be honest, in my opinion, Barack Obama was the best president the USA ever had, capable of juggling with all this, he was the one closest to this ideal goal, and Trump exactly the opposite, he is destroying the US leadership, he (and his administration) is clueless!
Public Professor of World standing. Perceptive, sympathetic and kind sociology that tells it as it is. My students who come from everywhere in the world really get what she says and see it in the evidence of their experiences.
Thank you, I have a better handle on why many of my dear friends are still Trump supporters even though they now see who this man in our White House really is. This is a sad moment in our Country. I pray we will be stronger for it. Thank you again for your insight.
Is it feasible to 'build a bridge' without the use of chicanery or the enticement of a carrot? Ho hum, seems that logic, common sense and decency should be universally understood, and yet.....
I am divided over the benefit of this discussion with Arlie, Robert. On the one hand, if this is an educational video and you are instructing everyone on the "correct" methodology of thinking seriously, then, you succeeded. However, if you are a political resistance, then, why would you send your viewers over to the other camp of thought, such as Rush Limbaugh, as Arlie implies. I took that turn and spent many hours soaking up the "thought" of the other side, and learned things I did not know previously. I came away with a view that supports POTUS in the form of Mr. Trump, when before I was a staunch supporter of the Clintons, the Democratic Party, even Bernie and especially, Obama. Now, after listening to Richard Wolff( who somehow entered that side trip of knowledge), I can see that if we are Capitalist Corporate Business model of economics, then, that is not freedom or democracy for the workers who then expect to vote in a democratic election. Corporations are vertically integrated, as are women of the past whose dependency upon property and husband took away their independence. I hope I am at least informing you of why Hillary did not win, she was not a leader in a top down system of thought, she had no platforms or ideas that "mobilized" the voters. She probably lost fair and square. The problem with Democrats who run for office seems to be that they are in a personal struggle to identify themselves, while the Republicans do not bother, but, instead, spend their campaign making promises that the economy will not allow them to cover anyway. I think that government is meant to take care of the people who are disenfranchised by the "profit motive". The government is now serving the corporates and not asking them to care for the people who are poor because of their policies (as of the tax bill). Until this directive to look at the other side, I had no idea that Mrs. Clinton and her husband were part of a program of enriching themselves ( "we've got to pay the bills, said Bill ), through foundation and public influence and speaking fees. It seems that the choice, for those in the know, was between a "Showman" PTBarnum, and a "secretive" use of power and money. Somehow, in Amercia, people usually vote for the flim flam over the devious. But, I stand by my reason for supporting Hillary, " she was the most rational candidate.
Interesting that you have these 2 books side by side: Karl Marx and Andrew Jackson. Other than the similar eras, is it just chaos chance or purposeful arrangement. Now I want to look for more polarities in your bookshelf, too bad they have a soft focus.
Don't blame the victims of a conman? The other side didn't offer them anything as attractive? Makes no damn sense. How could a candidate/party which constrains itself to promising things which are somewhat realistic possibly compete with a candidate/party which has no such constraint? No, sorry. The victims do have culpability in this case. They must change or else every conman which comes along will be successful. The victims are also the enablers.

The predatory/abusive leader can only develop and grow to power in an environment that fosters and/or tolerates this behavior.

Garry Jones I have copies of the Bible and the Koran side by side on my bookshelf, and I believe in neither of them...
