Noelle Stevenson said that Shadow Weaver’s final act wasn’t really a redemption. She was simply trying to do one good deed and acting like it made up for a lifetime of abuse to both her children. What she did with Adora was also abusive, I feel you used the wrong choice of words with that, her abuse was more subtle by causing Adora to develop that savior complex. Regardless I loved the analysis of one of my favorite shows. I showed my mom this show and she also loved it. I am surprised when bringing up other media you didn't mention Star Wars given all the references the show makes to it. I feel it's a better Star Wars story than the sequels, and this is speaking as someone who liked the first two.
Noelle Stevenson said that shadow weaver wasn't supposed to be seen as redeemed or forgiven her sacrifice is supposed to give catra and Adora some sort of closure.
Interesting. I do still thinknit's a question that was worth asking, and death of the author being what it is, I think a lot of people might have come away from the show seeing her as redeemed, so I felt it was a topic worth looking at. thanks for letting me know though, I hadn't heard of this.
@@QosmicVoid yeah it's the whole death by redemption thing wich happens so many times that it loses its effects noelle once said an interview that she hated those kinds of redemption and it actually shows in the way that it might have been something catra wanted but she had to live to face her actions while for shadow weaver it was her last act and even a final act of manipulation. Notice how unlike catra her last words weren't I'm sorry they were your welcome she even says it with a smile as if to say oh look you have to forgive me now!!!
@@negargeliyerdi3766 It's indeed a trope that has a lot of issues with it. I don't nessesarily oppose the trope though, I think it can work in a few circumstances. To me, I feel like her sacrifice humanized her somewhat, and was her attempt at making SOME amends for the harm she caused, and that definitely seemed to be the intent to me, but I definitely agree that she wasn't "redeemed". It would have been, perhaps, the start of her redemption if it hadn't come at the cost of her life, but it wasn't in and of itself redemption. Her sacrifice showed there was SOME good in her, and that, perhaps in her own twisted way, she did genuinely care about Adora and Catra, in the same way that many abusive parents do. One doesn't have to be pure, 100% cartoonishly evil to be abusive, and an abuser can still, in their own way, care about the person or people they're abusing. It doesn't absolve them of guilt, nor does it excuse their behavior, it's just a simple statement of fact: abusers are people and people are often complicated.
