My younger brother had the Game Boy version and we enjoyed it. It adds some invincibility frames when the player is hit and a password system to make it a more humane experience. I was caught off guard by the higher difficulty when I tried the NES version as an adult
To me the biggest problem with the game is the fact it doesn’t give you a single hint about being able to push objects. The manual doesn’t talk about it and there is no animation or stage design pointing to the fact its possible. Once you find out about it, though, pretty smooth sailing from there.
This is one of those games I've always wanted to like because I love the way it looks, I love the way it sounds, I love the overall idea, and even all the cryptic stuff seems really fun. But I just can't get past the actual combat and how the enemies constantly respawn. I guess when it comes to searching for cryptic things I'd rather it be relaxing while doing so.
I love this one. Even though I could get pretty far back in the day, I couldn't beat it completely without a Game Genie. I still really like it and currently own both the NES and Famicom carts.
I love Milon's Secret Castle and still have my hand-drawn maps from when i played through it in 2016. I don't understand why this game gets so much hate while metroid gets so much praise... they're both great!
I played this back in the day and was absolutely perplexed by why it had such a bad reputation. Shooting and hitting everything to see what you find is just so much fun (that's not sarcasm, unlike many games from the era that hide things it rewards you enough to keep it fun, even if it's a drip feed of more money.) I only wish there were more of this, it's pretty short for what it is but understandable for a 1986 Famicom game.
hey shout-out to the Hudson shot watch! I did rent this one when I was younger it was an interesting game... certainly didn't get very far don't think I even made the first boss! one I might have to track down one of these days.
That is crazy that people over in the land of the free hate this game. It seems rather fun. Maybe Super Metroid really made people hate early metroidvanias, because there is a lot of retrospective declining reputation of stuff like Simon's Quest and Metroid as well.
I actually like the US version of the game, but I don't have the Japanese version of it yet, but I want it because I don't have an NES anymore but I DO have a Famicom…

also the music in the palace maze is absolutely rockin
I’ve always loved this game’s enemy sprites so much. They’ve got great designs and a ton of personality for such small sprites.
Hooray, I love these videos!

That is one of the big challenges here.

I think all of the cool people like Milon's while all of the squares rage at it.

didn't expect a positive look on this one

Not many people know this, but there’s a snes sequel on the snes called ‘Do Re Mi Fantasy’, and it’s actually really good

6:55 that's the reason I never finished the first metroid
At least in the US version, there is one level where the money respawns. It's the one with gray blocks seen at 1:56 in your video.

I never got the hate for this game.
