    Point zero blew my mind, and 25 years on it still blows my mind. My absolute number one, trance anthem of all time, no other trance tune, sent me into the same kind of euphoric frenzy than point zero, Matt Darey you legend.

  • @DJJonPattrsn22
    @DJJonPattrsn22 4 года назад +9

    By 1999 Matt was producing and remixing at a level above other producers & DJs and he had established a unique sound. And by the time he took a break and disappeared in 2000 or 2001 he had decisively earned the unofficial title as the king of euphoric trance/dance. The number of great records that he was involved with from ~1997-2001 is really astonishing-and to learn that there was a significant amount of stuff that he didn't even release in those days is even more amazing.
    Matt introduced me to trance and he will always be the kind of trance for me.

All music that I absolutely adore. Gamemaster is one of my absolute favourite tracks, ever. But I love so much of Matt's stuff. My first trance CD was "Pure Euphoria" which I found for $4 at a second hand music shop. I didn't really even know what trance was but the cover and title caught my attention. I also saw a remix of Barber's Adagio for Strings which I'd studied/analyzed in music theory so it seemed like something to create a bridge for me and help me understand dance music better. I had just started going to one of the top rated club nights in the world and most of the people who were regulars seemed quite serious and knowledgeable about the music so I was looking to catch up a bit.
    Disc 2 (of Pure Euphoria) is the best trance CD I've ever heard. It flows so well, it really sounds like one 80 minute long trance "symphony" as it so smoothly progresses from one theme/melody to the next. I really couldn't understand how all that music could be composed and produced by all those different people and come together so seamlessly and intelligently. I really didn't quite understand what a DJ does exactly and I assumed that Matt must have sort of reworked or even remixed all the songs to get them so sound so similar and transition so cleanly.
    That definitely set the bar high, and he was doing things that few other DJs were considering at that time-and he hadn't even started DJing yet.
    His musical background certainly is evident in the way he mixes and in his productions.

    To all the younglings stumbling upon this video: This guy is a LEGEND of trance music. IMHO he can only be compared to Armin. We are talking about the guy behind all time trance classics / masterpieces / timeless tracks, such as Point Zero (as Li Kwan), Gamemaster (as Lost Tribe), Breathe in You (as Tekara)...There was a time near the transition to the current millennium when trance ruled the underground scene and for a reason..No...actually for 2 reasons. Matt Darey and Armin

  • @tiny_toilet

    This track is easily my favorite electronic tune of all-time and, perhaps, from any genre. God, it was so ahead of its time, like nothing has ever been before. People love to say iconic mid-20th century bands like the Beatles or what have you were way ahead of their time, and of course they were...but they were primarily introducing sounds and concepts from other existing genres. While they certainly had enormous influence over shaping the sound and direction of contemporary rock and pop, Point Zero, on the other hand, marked the start of an entirely new genre of music. It was still foor-on-the-floor, synth and sample-comprised EDM, sure, but that's where similarities ended. It had the new, completely alien feel of "Pack your bags for hyperspace, and get ready to be brain-tickled by self-transforming, fractal, machine elves." Musically, it was light-years beyond anything in existence. And now I learn that his primary synth was a JD-990?! WTF??? I had always assumed it was pure analog - not a question in my mind. Hell, they were only just inventing analog modeling technology at that time, and VA in the 90s was nothing to write home about in the first place. That he squeezed the tones he did out of an early model wavetable synth module makes this track that much more of a head-spinning feat. Both musically and technically, the leaps and bounds it took blow anything else out of the water.

Loving the details of his Ministry 'mix' and old productions but heartbreaking to hear he threw some unreleased material 'in the bin' but at least some survived and will be put out at last. And Gamemaster in '3D' or Dolby Atmos, I wonder how the sound engineer he mentions (name?) recreated the original sounds, Matt said it sounds the same but I find that hard to believe as I'm such a nerd regarding electronic music. This track was my first foray into trance. To me it’s kinda that true trance sound before it all went commercial. Think it was on React 10 or something. What days they were.

      @@muzikxpress Oh yes!! Awesome track, so dreamy but with these electrical filter sweeps. I've just looked it up. It was on Reactivate 10 - (Snappy Cracklepop Techno:) - Still have it somewhere... It was one of my favourites. I was v interested to hear about Matt's production. Some of the kit I have is used but I never knew that. Great interview as always.

    Matt Darey’s remix of “Rise” by Gabrielle is probably my all time fav. Do yourself a fav and listen to it again. His remix of anything is always the best version of the track. Too many amazing tracks to list.

    I think the A side was "I Need a Man" ,,, I am sure that female vocal sample from Point Zero was in one of those 90s American movies , the girl was working in a school or rehab type facility..i got Point Zero on a black label with green writing...its a nice loud vinyl pressing too.

    • @muzikxpress
      @muzikxpress  Год назад

      Depends on which release you have, some labels had "I Need A Man" on the A-side indeed. The original release had "Point Zero" on the A-side though. What a track!

    I think that the first DJ mix that Matt did {which was of course for Telstar's Euphoria series} was "Pure Euphoria (Level 4)"- whereas you splashed an image of "Ibiza Euphoria", the first in the Ibiza sub-series which I found a bit confusing; but I very well may be mistaken.

    • @muzikxpress
      @muzikxpress  4 года назад

      The "Pure Euphoria (Level 4)" DJ Mix came out in 2000, while the "Ibiza Euphoria" mix compilation came out back in August 1999 already, so I don't think you're right ;-) And in between there was another mix compilation Matt did, which is from November 1999. That one is just called "Trance" and was a free CD for people who bought the "Fast Car" magazine.

    • @djpee25
      @djpee25 5 лет назад +5

      Lost tribe’s Gamemaster is hard to beat,and a very similar track is his remix of Invisible by Tilt (Lost tribe remix that is). Beautiful’s very good to! Im old school so... ,)

    • @fezmania5078
      @fezmania5078 5 лет назад +3

      So hard to choose a favorite track and remix. A favorite tune would be Beautiful and remix would be Strings for Yasmin.

      @AndrewHudak 5 лет назад +2

      Now that's a tough one. Here's my top 6:
      - Lost Tribe - Gamemaster
      - Tilt - Invisible (Lost Tribe Vocal Mix)
      - Delerium - Heaven's Earth (Matt Darey Remix)
      - Matt Darey Feat. Marcella Woods - Beautiful
      - Li Kwan - Point Zero
      - M3 - Bailamos (Matt Darey Mix)
