I live just north of Ft Collins, and 2 years ago I was all in on Old Elk because it was “local”, nearly a dozen varieties in my collection, and w the exception of Four grain and the cigar blend I am sharing as often as possible and sipping through that part of my shelf. For $80+ dollars there are many pours I enjoy more. Great notes and review Peter, thank you. Holding onto that Infinity Blend from a couple of years ago though lol.
I'm a big fan of the Four Grain and Double Wheat. Going forward I'll be replacing those bottles and skipping the rest... probably. 😊
Still haven't tried any Old Elk, because like you said, seems to be a 50/50 split and for me they are a bit pricey. If I ever try one it will most likely be a store pick. Early congrats Peter on the upcoming 100th Sip/Skip episode. The Journey continues.
It has been a great journey so far. Let's keep it going! Cheers!
Boy, what a difference with different offerings from Old Elk. I have a 116 proof wheated bourbon Old Elk store pick, and boy does it just have the worst wheat funk on the nose I have ever had on a bourbon - like stinky feet in a barnyard. It is much better on the palate, but SO HARD to get past the nose to make it nigh undrinkable. Letting it rest helps a bit, but not enough to make me want to save it.
On the other hand, I LOVE the Old Elk Cigar Blends - great concentration of flavors that are great on the nose and absolutely killer on the palate. Great with a cigar, and good on its own.
I have a few bottles, but have not run into anything that off-putting. With the amount of bottles I have I don't think I will be buying another bottle for a while. When I do get another one I think I will stick with the Four Grain or the Double Wheat.
I agree that I wouldn't buy another one. Same, nothing bad. Just not something I need again. My favorite OE products is their Cigar Blend batch 1.
I got so many Old Elk bottles in a short period of time I kind of got saturated with them. The Double Wheat and the Four Grain is where I will keep putting my money if and when I ever run out of their bottles.
I enjoyed a bottle of the Old Elk 88 proof bourbon. I think it's a lower shelf offering but I did like it. I have not purchased a second bottle but maybe.
I have enjoyed all the Old Elk bottles so far. They might be over priced, but they are still good. Cheers!
This is a definite pass for me. I’m not a fan of Old Elk. I seem to be minimizing alcohol intake and focusing on high quality peated scotch. I need to do it for health. Excellent thoughts Peter! Cheers!
Life is too short to drink stuff you don't like. Hopefully we can live long enough to figure out what we like after tasting everything! 🤪 I hope all is well with you. My endoscopy is scheduled for next week. Cheers!
Old Elk is one of my favorites…cheers
We are getting split decisions on Old Elk so far. People either like it or they don't. Interesting 🤔
@@whiskeyisajourney I have the cigar blend and the wheat bourbon 113 proof both are nice pours. Also my daughter goes to ASU I might hit you up for recommendations for a couple of bourbon bar. I’ll be out your way in May to help her at the end of the school year…
@@georgehoward8313 nice! 🔱 Go devils!
I have this bottle and have similar feelings towards it as you did in this video. However, I’ve been blending it with woodford double oak at 2 parts woodford to 1 part straight wheat and it is fantastic that way lol. I call it my poor man pappy.
I am going to try that. Sounds good.
After trying quite a few Old Elk expressions, the only two I am left enjoying today are the Straight Rye (no surprise, right?) and their Cigar Cut Blend.
Some of the TW store picks like the Port Cask Finished bottle offer that extra complexity you said was lacking in core line bottlings.
Overall the lineup is underwhelming, but I do like the Four Grain and the Double Wheat. I know you like rye, but I just can't bring myself to get another bottle from them. Cheers!
The Cigar Cut is excellent finished stuff - its a personal fav.
Might have to give this a try, even if its a skip for you! A soft, easy drinking 50% whisky sounds good. Congrats on 100 Sips or Skips and over 9k subs! Well deserved, Peter!
Thanks! It's been a fun journey so far. There is nothing wrong with this bottle. It's a solid offering. There are so many Old Elk bottles to choose from so when it's gone I'm going to replace it with the Double Wheat or the Four Grain. If and when I ever run out of those. I still have 3/4 or more of each. I just don't drink that much. Cheers!
gave not had that one. I do like the Old Elk wheated bourbon and that is 92 proof so has some character. I have heard the double wheat and 10 year sheat are much better but I am not an old elk fanboy and haven't gotten them. The rum cask finish rye is very good but not worth the $120 they wanted for it when it came out. My buddy is an OE fanboy so I had some of his. That rum cask is very good but Sagamore Rum cask is much better and half the price.
Based on the comments, it looks like people are split on old elk as a brand. They either like it or they don't. That's interesting.
glad I passed on this one. Thanks again for taking one for the team.
It was still good. I would just prefer to drink the double wheat or the four grain. Cheers!
@@whiskeyisajourneyI’ll keep those in mind. I think they were on sale at my local total wine.
Nice review. Not a fan of Old Elk. 🥃
Looks like Old Elk is a brand people either like or don't. Interesting.
