4:20 "Saint-Saëns has said to me personally...". I'll never be able to get over the fact that he played with Saint-Saëns in 1888, when he was 12 and Saint-Saëns was merely 52. Brahms, Dvorák or Tchaicovsky were at the height of their powers and knocking out masterpiece after masterpiece at that very moment. It's no wonder he talks about him as if he was still alive: Casals was 45 years old when he passed away. Elgar still was a totally unknown 31-year old trying to figure out how to get his composing career going, while Casals was already playing with one of the greatest composers in the world. He's 87 in this video. It's easy to forget how extraordinary he was both as a musician and as a human being.

In 1964, it was almost 80(!) years ago when the very young Casals performed that piece with the composer himself.

For me, as a cellist, it's just a piece of most expensive gold in the world. This masterclass... (I'm playing this concerto now btw)

Well, either she was incredibly nervous, or she was trying to impress the Maestro with her blinding speed? I don't think it worked!
In her defense, we should note that the pitch is extremely high, so the video is probably played way too fast 🙂

This masterclass is of the 1960 not of the 1964. Here he was 83.
