    “It’s not exactly what is written, but it means that.” The antithesis of what is generally taught in music schools now, the once-self-evident idea that the printed page is only a graphic approximation of the real music, more related to speech than to literature, runs counter to the legacy of the Logical Positivists. They held that the precision of any printed text-music included-was of paramount significance. That may work for Webern, certainly not for Brahms.
