Even with the low mileage, you might want to stick some new rings in there just because all the big labor is already done. And then you KNOW it's not a high mileage engine.
You raise a good point... If this was a full-on rebuild/restore on the bike of my dreams, I'd certainly do that. But the fact is, this is a low-budget repair on a low-budget bike. All the mechanical bits inside the bike look absolutely great, so 4 new ring kits at $30 a pop... no es bueno. :)
+GS850GLZ 1982 Wow I forgot how shaky my cell phone cam videos were! But to answer your question, I was pretty well prepared so I want to say it all went together in about a day. The hardest part was scraping off the old base and head gasket remnants from the cylinders and head. That took many hours and a lot of patience. She all last summer and no leaks!
Hi, I have a 1980 gs850L and need to find the correct petcock. I have found 2 different petcocks online, one is 44mm from the center of the mounting bolts and the other 50mm any help would be apperciated.
jsandidge1 Yo! Yup, all back together and I've been riding it as often as humanly possible. I have lots of footage in the queue, but finding the time to sit down and actually get any editing done is near impossible these days. :(
Good work Charles! Can't wait to see this baby go back together. Keep us posted!
Thanks and will do!
Looks fun, I have the same project on my '83 this winter. Love this bike.
Wow. You did it in-frame? Maybe I will rebuild the one gathering dust in the back of my shop !! Thanks.........

Still got your 850?
How long did it take to put it back in working order?
