  • This is our tired, lifeless, dull, worn out, old tarmac driveway. It badly needs a makeover. This can be done at a fraction of the price of laying new tarmac!
    You will need rollers and you will need black driveway sealant paint.
    The stuff to get is -
    Thompson's TDSB5L Drive Seal Black 5 Litre
    It costs between £20 and £25 afor a 5 l tin.
    This stuff can be difficult to get hold of. I tried B&Q, Homebase, the Range, and Scewfix all to no avail. Phone up before heading out to buy so you won't have a wasted journey!
    The best place to buy is at an old fahioned hardware store -if you can find one! Or at a building supplies like Macnaughton Blair Ltd. ( Rosetta Belfast or Lisburn )
    This paint is runny but does a good job. I used 6 tins to cover our front drive. You may need more of less depending on the size of the work.

    Great job Tom well done a friend of mine did his driveway did the edges first with a soft brush to stop splashes and put it on heavy and then used very thick rollers to get the paint in the tarmac and give it a heavy coat but then he had done a few driveways before so had a lot of experience of what worked out the best way to do it that old saying ( practice makes perfect ) thanks for sharing take care 👍

      This stuff really works well RDUK. It means that you delay retarmacing for years and years. I good thick coat will protect it for a long time. Hard work though.

      I'm afraid it does fade. It all depends on how particular you are. We haven't done it since and that is 4 years ago. But it does need a repaint after 2-3 years. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

      Yes Thomas it is very frustrating and it is driving me nuts! lol But I have plenty of wee projects on the go.
      In my view there was no need to lockdown the healthy with the sick. Industry, economy, jobs, futures all under major massive threat now. Mental health is being effected. Suicides up, domestic abuse up. Sweden and other countries didn't lockdown and their rates are in general better than ours! The lockdown 'cure' is proving worse than the disease! All this borrowed money will have to be paid back !!!!
      Rant rant rant! lol

    How did you find the coverage? My driveway is 60 m2 and going off the states coverage I should be able to do it with 2 tins, but I’ve ordered 4 tins just in case

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  2 года назад +1

      Hi Mike, It all depends on how thickly you want to paint it on and also if the condition of the driveway. If your driveway is in poor broken condition it will obviously require more paint cover. We found that tin coverage was not good at all. We used 8-9 tins! They were nearly £20 each. So our driveway was covered with a lot of hard work for around £200. It was and is pricey but the finished job looks like a new driveway. A new driveway will take big money so it is a bargain and is worth doing. I think you may order at least 2 more. If you don't use them then you can keep them for next time. Our driveway is very exposed and takes a fair bit of abuse so it will need another coating next year. Best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland

    Oh boy! What a job! Our entry drive is fairly long and goes downhill towards the door and gravelled but thankfully the previous owners must have done it right as after nearly 4 years being here we have not had to touch it and have no drainage or run-off problems. After saying that I've probably scudded myself! You did a good job (messy!) but as you say it does look a lot better. How did the white shorts survive? 👍

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  4 года назад

      Yes FF not a good choice of clothing colour for painting anything but I was always one to go my own way! lol The white shorts are my old tennis shorts. i haven't played for quite a few years now. -Probably 10+ lol They are no longer white! lol A lot of farmers use concrete now. But any driveway covering is going to be pricey!

      @@TomMcClean Yes, I know that is why we are delighted our gravel is stable on our slope. Heavy grade gravel's good as the water drains. Our next door neighbour's driveway looks like a fine sandy sort of grit and has large ruts and large portions end up out on the road after rain. I think he recently had a quote for bitumen but so far nothing has transpired. How come I am discussing driveways?! Haha! Have just spent the last couple of days distributing another couple of metres of mushroom compost but ran out so will need to order another load. This gardening business is not only a challenge but expensive!

      Hi again Bruce. We last coated our tarmac 2 years ago. We might get away with leaving it another 2 years. Then we will buy lore of this tarmac paint. Admittedly our driveway does take a fair bit of abuse. I reckon 4 years is about the maximum it can be left which isn't bad. However we found that a tin doesn't cover a big area. Maybe we wear laying it down too thickly. It does look really good in the first year after it is laid down. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

      In answer to your suggestion I can only say that our neighbour has been doing this for decades now and there do not appear to be any adverse effects. Instead people who pass his driveway often remark at how good it looks. I have been using it as designed on tarmac. Thanks for your comment.

      @@TomMcClean Hi Tom, fair point - the proof of the pudding is in the eating. But as a qualified paint chemist that's worked in the paint manufacturing industry for 42 years, I can tell you that the vast majority of issues in painting arise from people not following instructions or using the wrong products or failing to prep properly (or a combination of all). As you say it's expensive stuff so surely it's worth a quick phone call to the people that make it - they'd be happy to help. Best wishes John.

      Sorry to hear that CM. Admittedly our driveway also looks a bit worse for wear. Then we are battered by the elements where we are. I reckon it has protected the surface underneath but that protection is largely gone now after 2 years. I'm now looking at other driveway paints but wondering if they would be any better. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills of N Ireland.
