Has anyone mentioned WEC Lemans in the comments yet ? Had fun playing that on the Amstrad back in the day ;-) Faster definitely looks like a great little game though. We needed more racers like this back when the ST and the Amiga were at the forefront
It Looks like WEC, but really, it's Hang-On (the first Hang-On): 1 road, 1 killer tune, tight controls, and raw speed. There are no split roads like in Outrun for example, and the road remains flat.
That's running surprisingly well given the hardware. The ST was a very weak piece of hardware, it was rushed to market after Atari lost the Amiga to Commodore. It was basically a Motorola 68000 in a box with very rudimentary graphics hardware, and despite being technically a 16-bit system it was far inferior to the PC Engine, let alone full fat 16-bit hardware such as the MD, SFC, or the Amiga.
@VideoGameEsoterica Understood. Watching footage is always different to actually playing, but the appearance of ice road physics and necessity to slow down in the corners makes it look frustrating . . .
I never owned an ST but it was on one that I first saw 16 bit graphics in a home system. It was the port of Dragon Breed, probably not the best but coming from the 8 bit I was impressed. The ST doesn't get much respect these days but to be honest it's a very early system that wasn't specifically designed for games and didn't have much in the way of custom chips. This game targets the STE, which is better specced that the earlier models. Still, this FASTER game is a remarkable achievement even when compared to other QUALITY racing games on the ST like the Lotus series, that never got anywhere near to 50 fps (not to mention the various arcade ports on the ST like Outrun, Turbo Outrun, Chase HQ and so on, I think the ST was getting a frame rate close to single digits with those!).
Hi all. I am trying to get this working on an emulator. I have tried Retroarch and Hitari. I have changed system to Atari STE and ram to over 1mb and reset, but I still get a black screen saying it requires an Atari STE and over 1mb ram. Can anyone help please?. I am a newbie regarding st emulation but i really want to play this game. Thanks for any help.
Much better than the actual outrun game on the ST. It was a shit port of the Amiga's already shit version of the game. The atari ST was a great system when games were actually written specifically for it instead of just being Amiga ports.
@@VideoGameEsotericaAmiga OutRun came out later than the ST version i believe? Amiga owners had been hoping the extra development time would mean a better game, sadly not.
@@VideoGameEsoterica I want to see the *Outrun Ferrari Testarossa on the Ridge Racer X start grid. * If not an official license as close as Namco dare.
If I recall correctly it was actually the stronger machine. Problem was loads of games were just ports of the Amiga version, which didn't often work well.
@@danbrittain9530 It could be. I always used to read the reviews in C&VG and noticed the Amiga games scored slightly higher. I had a Master System at the time and was really impressed by the 16-bit computers.
Amiga had hardware scrolling, 32 colours onscreen from 4096,ST 16 from 512,ST had great soundchip, ST had THE awful AY chip. ST had a slightly faster 68000 CPU which meant a slightly faster frame rate when it came to polygon 3D Games.
Looks like it lifts art assets from Konami's Wec Le Mans. Which had an awesome 360 degree spinning arcade cabinet.
I wonder how many of those cabs still exist out there
That's what I thought. It's more like Konami's Wec Le Mans, than Outrun.
I believe WEC Le Mans was one of the inspirations for this - along with Super Hang-on and Enduro on the Atari 2600 😎
Reminds me of WEC Lemans. Konami racing game from the late 80’s
Very similar vibes for sure

Few people have. Def some connections being made
Defiantly more WEC Lemans than Outrun, and controlling the car looks like your driving on ice, looks good though. ST was my go to back in the day.
I just see OutRun everywhere

It’s like 10% of every game haha
It remembers me Outrun 2019 for the Megadrive
Some similar vibes for sure
I got this one working on my MiSTer about a week ago, and it's really good! Very simple, but fun and a graphical showpiece on the STE hardware!
It’s simple in the best ways. Pick up and play
Been following this and it's cool as heck. Would love a core setup video
I’ll get a core vid done in January
AtariST was my first ever computer.. Happy Christmas VGE
I need to find more stuff to play on ST

All the more impressive this game runs as well as it does then!
I used to play 'Truck' on the ste. This games seems to run a bit smoother.
I’ll have to google that one
This looks more like the Konami arcade game W. E. C. Le Mans not Outrun
Has more of an OutRun vibe to me gameplay wise but I’m sure it’s got a lot of inspiration in there
i agree aswell with W.E.C le mans and ive played a hell of a lot of games back in the day 👍
@@VideoGameEsoterica trust me, played it just last week on mame plus plenty of videos on RUclips. Other than that keep up the good work. 👍
Let's call our game Faster and then slow everyone down to a crawl for the corners. That'll work.
It’s just a gameplay mechanic
@VideoGameEsoterica Understood. Watching footage is always different to actually playing, but the appearance of ice road physics and necessity to slow down in the corners makes it look frustrating . . .
I’m glad you recognize watching is diff than playing :) so few people get that so points to you!
impressive game for the st!
Def impressive and a fun 20 minute retro style game to play over the holiday

I rarely hear the ST mentioned it’s true
I love the Atari ST VGE. Its one of my favorite computers of all time. 8^)
I know so little about it personally
Hopefully this sees an Amiga port!
Never know!
Dosent corner very well does it.
Corners about as well as any superscaler
Looks great
Plus it’s fun too. All you need
looks fun
Tons of fun
I dont have Atari ste machine, can i play it with emulator, with one it works good with it sir ?
Yep works via emulation
Awesome game for an older computer. But this games looks more like the WEC Le Mans by Konami, 1986.
YES, I was just about to write this... same car sprites.
Bit of a similar vibe
Good eye
@@VideoGameEsoterica 😉 yes, well I have the board.. somewhere. Also check out Racin Force, what I'd say would be the sequel.

I believe the maker left directions on the itch page
Thanks yeah I have tried but still can't get it working with hitari or retroarch@@VideoGameEsoterica
OutRun? This is Wec LeMan
I see OutRun everywhere
Link?
I’ll add it when I get back in a bit
@VideoGameEsoterica ok
👌

hey look, a video on an fpga device that actually works! lol

So many ports back then just suffered from being unoptimized for the target hardware

Atari ST always seemed like a slightly weaker Amiga.
Honestly unless it’s DOS I have so little knowledge of old school computers I’d just be guessing
The Falcon030 was the best iteration of that line.

You should check out Outrun on the Atari ST. It was a pretty good port, but nowhere near as smooth as this game.
If I ever do a Port Authority episode on OG OutRun I’ll include it
Really! I thought outrun on st and amiga was atrocious
@@16bitfightclub34That's because they were just that.
