    My mothers nose ring still closes up after 20+ years of having it! She needs a retainer when she has surgery. Kept my nose ring in solid for about 2 years and had it out for about a year after that and I popped it back in like I just took it out. Its pretty awesome how each individual, related or not, has different experiences when it comes to keeping the piercing through medical procedures and whatnot.

      Haha same!!!! They made me take the x-ray over again without the metal in place, they said it was in case. There was something behind the metal that was obstructing the view. I got to keep the physical x-rays with the jewelry in because they didn’t want to keep them laugh out loud. It was back in the 2000s when they printed out the x-rays physically still

    I went in for an MRI and they told me I would have to take out my piercings. They lady advised me to have them out. Especially long bars like industrials or anything over an inch. She said it will get really hot and feel like a lightning bolt strikes your ear. So get those retainers, or have some in case of emergencies. Great video!

    I have a silicon heart retainer and it works pretty well. The only downsides are that it's hard to fish it through so you have to pull it with a tweezer inside your nostril, it doesn't quite fit my skintone so it's not invisible (more like a skin tag look), and the stem is long so sometimes it sticks out the front and it looks like I have a booger.

    I have actually never thought about that. It makes sense that you wouldn't get a fresh piercing if you had a surgery or other procedure scheduled in advance, but what happens if it's unplanned? What if you get a new piercing and three weeks later sustain an injury and need an MRI? I'm assuming the jewelry is removed and the piercing is a loss?

      I always have retainers in my backpack because I'm clumsy af. I found the "near natural" plastic retainers with the nude O rings work best. I have 30+ diffrent shapes and sizes in my bag. I'm clumsy. And I was very lucky I had these. About 10 months ago I got hit my a car, it wasn't too bad but they wanted to x Ray me and give me an mri, just to make sure there were no hidden brakes or bleeding. I explained to the nurse (she had 3 visible tats so I knew she would understand the mod life) that I didn't want to loose pirceings and actually did have retainers in my bad, she helped me put them in and took photos of each pirceing and the jewlwery I took out On my phone so I'd be able to put them back in after. I had recently had my 6th lip pirceing ( the top right side of my top lip) done, and tho it hurt to change and change back, it healed fine after. It's not a good idea to do it, if there's an emergency it's always worth a try.

      Most of the time it is only necessary to remove piercings and/or earrings for dental x-rays if the dentist wants to see the area where the piercing is located (because metal blocks the rays and the area would not be visible on the film/digital image). Piercings can cause kind of a mirror effect, though, especially with the Orthopantomograph (the one that spins around the head). So if a person has a lot of piercings or we also want to be sure and see the area where the Piercing is located clearly, the piercings should be removed :)

    I used the plasticy retainers for the septum, they work great, they are super comfortable, too, so if you need to use it daily for your job or something, it works, BUT I suggest searching one which has some form of closure on it, f.e. a silicone barbell in order to hide it. If you don't need to hide it and just need it for short check ups, the plasticy one is great, I think I have it in bioflex. :)

    Retainer I didn’t like: the nose stud with the tiny front ball, and it’s straight with no back. It comes out so easily without being noticed. It’s amazing for hiding but not worth the risk.
    Retainers I do like: anything with two ends that aren’t super flexible (so the shape of the piercing can be preserved). Although, bio flex with a flat back and push top in the lip is really nice. It’s so lightweight too.
    When I had my MRI results was able to keep all my jewelry in and I didn’t feel any effects from it. Also, they were looking at my spin so they weren’t worried about my piercings blocking anything, and they just wanted to know the location so the person checking the scans knew. Granted each experience is going to be different, so yeah the tech will tell you what to do.

It was 3 months after I had gotten them done, so they weren’t new new. I found that when something like that does happen where you have to change a piercing that isn’t fully healed, it’s better to change them in the shower after you clean them.

      I have mri’s all of the time. Generally if the metal of the piercing is either gold, silver, or medical grade titanium they will allow you to keep them in. But that’s only if it’s a piercing that’s hard for you to take out on your own like a daith with seam ring. If you just have something easy like a helix with a labret you should know how to take this out and they will expect you to do so, so be prepared to take it out or have a retainer ready.

    during surgery, they don’t want metal in case they have to take a random x-ray that They weren’t expecting to need to take, once you’re asleep, but most importantly, for cauterization stitching, often times internally, they’ll do cauterization instead of absorbing stitches, and if the metal is close enough to the area they’re gonna cauterize, it’ll heat that metal up And cause burns. I’m not sure how close it needs to be, but I presume like within a couple feet or so.
    Also, they don’t wanna have to worry about anything getting ripped out while they’re scrubbing, pushing your body and repositioning you once you’ve gone asleep.

    my earlobes, i dont know what it is, but they simply do not close. ive left jewelry out for MONTHS and they dont close at all. it was a massive hassle for me to try and close my newer ones that were only about 6 months old, its been a couple years and they’re still not really there, like i could probably still get an earring in there. it is a blessing and a curse lol

    I didn’t know that you couldn’t keep them in for hours at a time. At school, I’m only allowed one lobe piercing per ear and one nose stud. I have… quite a few more piercings than that… so I was wondering what I could do because I’ve paid over £100 for all my piercings I’m not letting my school tell me to take them out. I only have a couple years left at school anyway until I can have as many piercings as I want but just in case I get pulled up on them again, I was wondering what would you recommend to cover up healing piercings?

    Great video. I'm looking at getting some push-in retainers (labret style) and wondering how people are liking those. I don't want to end up having to fight it to get it back out. While the pro is likely that they hold better, that could also be a potential con. Anybody want to chime in?

    This was great to know. Now do they do retainers for all piercings. ie: tragus, daith helix. I need to know as in the new year , I have to get some dental x-rays. And latex or silicone are what I will need. Thanks again for this very informative video.

    • @annonone93
      @annonone93 3 года назад

      They do make retainers in pretty much all shapes. I have labret style for my lip and nose (sized my nose to 16g). I looked up hoop for the daith and they have that too. The retainers you wouldn’t find are anchors for dermal or surface bars. Or at least I wouldn’t ever put a plastic surface bar in me. I’d worry about it snapping for some freak reason.

    • @Lynn-64
      @Lynn-64 3 года назад

      @@annonone93 thank you, it always good to know that they have these. At some point, I might have to get them if I need x-rays or if I need a surgical procedure. I also agree, I sure wouldn't want to put any plastic in me. ie: dermal I will check them out. Again thanks a bunch.

      I have taken my nostril piercing out to wash my face and forgot to put it back in till morning, and it was fine. But this only happens maybe once a year. I've also had this for nearly 20 years and everyone is different, so your mileage may vary. When I was a kid my ear lobes would close up if I didn't wear earrings for like 2 days even years after I had them done.

      I saw that info in different places that retainers not a good idea. Silicone is too flexible, acrilyc is not smooth enough. Teflon is smooth and flexible, but hard enough. It will not stick to the fresh wound, will not react with any substance and safe. (Mostly it's a little milky colored "plastic", but recently someone told me that Bioflex or piercings under something similar name is teflon too and it is clear in color.) :)

      I don't think so. The best answer is "it depends", but even it is not visible/flexible/soft it can be catched. So you risking a rip out or some damage caused by the piercing, even it is just a minor one, but still some damage. But best to ask the piercer who will do/did your piercings.

    • @Mirabylia

      The heart shaped retainer is elastic. It is long, because that act like a little needle. You stick it in the hole, grab the end on the other side, and than strectch it out. The heart shape will stretch to a "line", so you can easily pull it trough. Same method when you want to get it out. :)

      There are large gauge retainers but a little tougher to find. Some people use plastic or acrylic jewelry for those if you can find those in the correct size. Again they are only temporary fixes.

    How long can you leave certain piercings out? I usually go 6 months to a year without putting anything in my labret. but I'm terrified to pull out my 3 month old septum piercing, even if it's just for a few minutes at most.

    • @pewpewcat7679
      @pewpewcat7679 3 года назад

      Gonna vary from person to person. Like he said in the video, you could have had a piercing for years and it'll still close up. I wouldn't leave my septum out too long. I took it out a few times since I got it in 2015, but couldn't say how long, can't remember. I wouldn't chance it if I were you. I also had a super super old labret just close up on me. I mean I've had that fucker since 2008 or something and it just closed up out of nowhere.
      Don't ask me what I did (I had noble intentions of waiting til it was fully healed and closed to have it repierced, but I'm not a patient person. It's pierced again now, not by a piercer tho 😆)

    I'm planning to get a septum piercing but I want to hide it from my parents and my piercer said that I can use a retainer. Is that okay?

    • @Mirabylia
      @Mirabylia 2 года назад

      More likely noo. I want to hide mine while healed because I ws afraid to catch or hit it. I was pierced with a titanium horseshoe and I ask the piercer to flip it up. It was a very easy healing. You can ask for a teflon (Bioflex or something) horseshoe too. It is a little flexible, but not too flexible. It would not stick to the wound, does not react with anything and smooth. I am allergic and with this method blowing my nose didn't really was painful, it was just a little sensitive. Healed fast and easy.
      Two times I hit my nose accidentally, had a little flair up (It was itchy and burning), but with saline soaking those disappeared in a few days. :)
