Sharing a superb tip that was given to me: clean underneath your microdermal with a small angled brush (it's a makeup brush for eyeliner for exemple) choose one with gentle bristles, make sure you clean it before each use and only use it for this purpose, but the way the small angled brush slides under the piercing is so perfect you will be able to get rid of the crusties and clean the entire area as far as the little bar that pokes out of the skin to which the jewel is attached, without moving the piercing it's so easy, efficient and gentle all you have to do is make sure the brush is clean, ma,eup artists even sterilize their brushes from a client to another but you should be good just sanitazing it. I clean it with regular soap, dip it in alcohol and let it dry before using it because i don't clean the area with alcohol it's too harsh I clean the brush with it then use it wet with regular water after the shower for exemple. Once a month, unless I see something bulding up underneath because I did take the habit of checking if the piercing is ok all the time, it's my favorite piercing I did and I want it there as long as possible, I enjoy caring for it

A friend of mine has had 3 flat titanium disks on the side of his neck, a bit on the back, it's hard to describe... and so far they've lasted a good 12 years.
I've always considered this friend an anomaly, as in it shouldn't have held on for that long... plus the "funny" part is that he's not really into body mods, he doesn't have a single tattoo and he doesn't have any other piercings aside from those 3 dermals lined up neatly.
It creates a nice contrast with his "normie" look, if that makes sense.
Thanks to him I've been meaning to get some at some point; but after much research, I've realized just how much luck my friend got, that it never rejected, that he never got them clutched onto something and got ripped...

@@AnnaF33 No it’s doing well so far. I was afraid when I first got it pierced that I accidentally snagged it. It almost looked like I had pulled out the shorter side of the anchor. But once the swelling went down it was better. I also took a couple sets of tweezers and pushed the anchor back down underneath the skin and pulled my skin up and over that side of the anchor that appeared to be coming out. So I may well have pushed it back under the skin on my own. I’m not sure. I am 46 years old so my skin isn’t as firm as it used to be. So sometimes I wonder if it will reject over time. So far so good though!
I was really hoping I could get the original top replaced with a little bit larger one But they say not to change it out until two months after the piercing. I had a beauty mark tattooed when I was younger in the same spot I had them put the dermal in. The top is small so it doesn’t cover completely where the ink was.. But if I get a little bigger top I am pretty sure it will cover it nicely.

Fistula formation on a single point insertion is possible, but it depends on where in the dermal layer it lands. typically 2-2.5mm below the surface fistula can form if the tissue is well disturbed in the original placement. However, it's not a guarantee. It's important to recognize that although a fistula may be beneficial for the longevity of the piercing, the contradictory notions are that a fistula forming in a pocket under the surface creates a haven for bacteria to thrive as the fistula has completely cut off blood flow and in-turn white blood cell supply to that pocket. From a safety point of view, a pocketed fistula is not something one should aim for and instead just remind clients that dermal anchors are temporary and their longevity can rely on numerous factors. Spans of 7-10 years is the upper echelon for longevity, as the skin is constantly in a cycle of abrasion, decay, regrowth and this will ultimately unseat the anchor and reject.

Personally I just got two anchors done under my clavicle (closer to my sternum to avoid excessive movement) and the pain for me was 8 almost 9 when getting this performed. The lady had the experience for it and she performed it beautifully but still its painful because the process isn't quick. She had to create the pocket which that part didn't hurt as bad but when she put the jewelry in and put great amounts of pressure to fit it into place that was gnarly. You can feel it pop into your skin too. First one I handled well but when she did the second one it was giving her a little more trouble to fit it in so she had to create more space. Really thought I was going to hurl but I pushed through lmao. I'd like to mention I have a healed surface bar in between my chest so that wasn't my first rodeo with surface piercings. They're not easy, quick or painless. I wanna say both are at least an 8 out of 10. Scott is right about having the tops changed and it becoming irritated. I had the tops changed professionally for my surface bar and the bottom one became irritated for like a day. I cleaned it with saline and it calmed down but he is right about you needing to be careful with how you handle them once they're "healed"

I had 4 dermals under my collarbones. I was always hitting them and my hair would get caught on them. The first one I ended up taking out myself using a sterilized (autoclaved) scalpel and bactine solution because it was coming through the skin and I didn't have the ability to go to a doctor or piercer at that point. A month or so later I had the three others removed. They were doing okay but I knew they were rejecting as well so I got them removed. Removal for all 4 was much easier than placement. Placement hurt because of where it was - no fault of my piercer, love her. Removal was done by a guy who does it all the time - he doesn't place dermals but he removes them for free. I blame that on scar tissue. He did have to cut all three of them out but as scar tissue often doesn't have nerve endings, I didn't feel it. I have a rather big scar from the first one to go and much smaller ones for the other three.
I won't lie, I've thought about getting them again as I really liked them, but I think I'd end up getting them removed just the same way so I haven't had them done again.
I may try one in a different spot, but for right now I'm just trying to heal my bridge and eyebrow piercings. Plus I have a few other piercings I want before I try a dermal again.

Piercing loving medical professional here! I don’t think dermal anchors can ever heal with a fistula, because by definition, a fistula is a tract that connects two separate compartments e.g. skin and bowel, bowel and bladder, or just a skin flap like regular piercing! A dermal anchor goes into the tissue but does not come out to another compartment, so it is not a fistula by definition. Such a tract is called a sinus (a pilonidal sinus is an example of a naturally occurring tract that goes into the tissue but does not come out)

Of the 22 I've had, these are my last three, so I can attest to not having a long survival rate (1-3 years mostly) except for these three. I love having the sparkles but dang it's sad to lose them and lose that money invested, too.

Not a piercer and definitely not a medical professional but i highly doubt that it would incase the piercing in fistula, because on traditional piercings you have hole A and Hole B but here you have only hole A and its in your body it has no touch with air and if you examine scars are almost always superficial. Again i could be totally wrong but it makes sense to me that it doesent

I had one on the side of my eye and damn.. got it redone 2 times. The first one healed so so so well and was amazing until I accidentally got caught on it and almost ripped it out. Had to take it out, it got super infected and gross and painful. Got it redone twice but it never healed properly for some reason. I'm thinking about trying it again cause I really really liked that piercing it's so beautiful but I really don't think I wanna bother with it again..

I’ve had a dermal in the side of my neck (so it could be seen through my stretched lobes) for over 12 years.
I had my lobes sewn up 9 years ago and the dermal is still going strong.
Most of the time I forget it’s even there, it’s only when someone mentions it or when I clean all my piercings that I remember it’s actually there.
I got one on the side of my face too that’s been there 6 years.
Both are still flush against the skin, I’ve had 0 issues with them and I still love dermals to this day.

It finally got unbearable during lockdown and nothing was open to help me remove it, so I ended up removing it myself! I have a tiny scar from it. It was so cute but I'd never get another one. I miss it tho :(

I got 3 back in 2010. They all were virtually painless. I had one in my throat, one in my hand and one on my temple. My hand and throat rejected within 7 days. The one on my face was professionally taken out today. It hurt like a b!tch. All that scar tissue grew over it!

I have 2 dermal piercings on my upper right cheek. These have healed well and I’ve had the first one for around 3.5 years..
I had 2 dermal on my chest over a period of 2-3 years. I caught one on clothes, and eventually both rejected. One scar is really flat and barely noticeable. The other, not so good. As the second rejected, it kind of moved a bit to the left, and I have a raised keloid which is off centre.
    Hmmm.
I loved the piercings for the time I had them, but yeah. Raised scars are not pretty.
