    👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my RUclips channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, RUclips channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

I saw one of Ed's (ha) Wembley gigs, I took my wife as I knew she wanted to see him. Anyway, I was blown away. Because it wasn't just him and a guitar - it was him, a guitar, and a loop pedal. And my god does he know how to use a looper. He would start each song from scratch and make the whole song sound so full by the end of each song - it was amazing to see, almost like we were seeing a magic show as well as a musical performance! I'd be terrified of a mis-step and everything going out of time, but he pulled it off - at Wembley. Brilliant stuff

One of the things sticks out to me about Ed Sheeran is the whole back story. It plays up to the idea that hard work prevails and people really like that. I'm always hearing things about who he gigged with when he first started/what he said when he was busking way back when which just add to his story. I think he also resonates with people because his back story makes him seem real in comparison to a band that have been put together by the X Factor for example. Lastly, his "unconventional" pop look gives us all hope that you don't need to be stereotypically good looking to succeed in the music industry haha.

Let’s not get too carried away... I’m not trying to take anything away from Ed but successful people are often so because they are surrounded by the right people. He’s talented and he understands the game. But his success is a results of a team of people - not just him. And you can probably say the same for many other top artists. I don’t know that Ed sat down one day and specifically picked out the first dance market, nor do I know if he came up with the idea to do Wembley solo with an acoustic guitar. If he did, then the guy is a genius. But I think the more likely scenario is that these moves were made by him and his team.
Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this topic. How important is management, when do you need it, what should you think about, etc...

This is interesting. There’s rarely a single reason. Elvis, Beatles, whoever, it’s all a combination of talent, planning, organisation, execution, resilience, money, opportunity, luck, marketing, brand, timing, graft etc etc. I believe that you can reduce the need for one thing if you have a bit more of something else and the most successful people do one or two things really well at any one time. Whilst respecting the rest but not be dogmatic about it. I think he is a talented musician but I think his real talent was firstly, at a young age, he knew what he wanted and secondly he put himself out there. That had nothing to do with management. He exposed himself to be judged. I recently saw a video from some shit talent show in 2007 that he was on. It showed what he was prepared to do. He continues to put himself out there. No one can do it for you once you cross the line. Doesn’t matter who you are or what level you are at. Only you can grab that opportunity. Only you can fuck it up. It’s all about what you learn from it for next time. Success shines and failure fades, use that to your advantage not your detriment. If your team are shit, don’t make that your excuse, get rid of them regardless of the cost and learn from it.

He is smart... it doesn't matter how bright or right your team is if you don't know which road to take. The artists with the most creative marketing sense - Modanna - Lady Gaga - NIN - Taylor Swift and on and on... started out with nothing. They have great instincts. You are sharing their brillian ideas with us, so we can use them... Thank you !!!

I heartily disagree Damo. Having played the scene with Ed before he was known his self belief and work ethic are the main reasons for his success. He used to gig almost every single night. And he was one of the few acts that when he sang in a pub could silence the room. That and he writes good songs that engage people. He is also a genuine and humble guy that people want to be around. You're talking about all the bells and whistles that the label has sprinkled on after the fact.

      Hey dude,
Great videos by the way, love your channel!
I read your comment nodding and I think we're saying very similar things. I get a lot of hate on this video because I'm being positive about Ed Sheeran who musicians don't like to acknowledge as talented and hard working. I have used Ed in many videos as an example of someone who sacrificed and worked hard and even in this one I mention what a lovely and hard working guy he seems like (i've not met him).
The only thing I would slightly argue on is that I would be surprised if Ed isn't completely aware of these things although (as I point out) he has an amazing team around him (I know several of them and they are the best). He is so clever, he knows how to play the game, or in fact all the games better than everyone else.
But I think what I am guilty of in this video is going straight into some ideas that musicians can learn from without acknowledging how good, how hard working and how brilliant he truly is.
Thanks for this dude, (I have subbed) I agree with you, and keep up the good work on your channel, the more of us doing this stuff the better!

Hi Damian, interesting stuff. I have a couple of thoughts: 1) Ed Sheeran is very focussed on a particular kind of success. I read a long interview with him in GQ magazine (who placed that I wonder) and he said his two main ambitions were to outsell Adele and to become the most successful male recording artist in the world. I couldn’t imagine Bob Dylan, or Neil Young, or Thom Yorke, or Polly Harvey, or Nicky Wire saying anything like that. And that is why he is more ‘successful’ in his understanding of the term than some of them, but less successful in their understanding of success. It’s also the reason why he could collaborate with Justin Bieber but he probably couldn’t collaborate with Jack White. The kind of success you get depends on your abilities, sure. But it also depends on the kind of success you aim at. 2. It also depends on money. Ed Sheeran’s advertising for a long time now has been so colossally extensive it must also have been colossally expensive. He’s like a football player that rich clubs invest in to get richer. None of this is to detract from his real skills. But the trouble with chasing money is that it limits the kinds of success you can achieve. If dedication to musical artistry was the criterion, who would be more successful, Ed Sheeran or Elliott Smith? I think it’s fine for people who want Ed Sheeran’s kind of success to go for it. But it’s important to know that it’s not the only kind, even among people who have made tidy amounts of money. Our culture talks up monetary success and global fame. But is a barrister intrinsically more valuable than a nurse?

I enjoy technicality in music as much as everyone else, but sometimes I do want to sing from the heart to simple music.

This all reminds of a couple things I’ve learned this week, about intelligent business...
1: A property course I’m on, showed how to make deals in 20 different variations that weren’t the typical idea that most people have about investing in property.
2: AJ beat Ruiz last night, using intelligent boxing, doing what most wouldn’t have expected; he didn’t straight in and suffer knock out like most would.
And today watching this great vid (thanks Damo) learning how one of the music artist masters uses intelligence, and doesn’t just go straight ahead like most other artist attempt; instead he thinks critically about how win the game without necessarily being the ‘best’.(Just like the property course and AJ)

More brilliant arguments Damian, I'm really enjoying your channel. One of my favourite producers Clark of Warp records released aiff stems from his latest album this week free to download for his fans to experiment/remix etc. I think this is another example of winning gratitude from fans. It's gestures like this that have people talking about you. I ran a live music night for a few years and we used to hand out sweets on the door, you wouldn't believe how happy it made our guests. I also remember attending a gig in Birmingham organised by Under The Counter, a guy called Keith Holland was one of the founders and he handed out free t-shirts on the door! I will always remember that gig and the people who ran it because A. I got a free t-shirt - B. It was a really good gig! - C. I still have the t-shirt more than 5 years on! - These are the sort of things that people remember. Simple gestures of kindness and goodwill really do count.

Every successful artist is relative to what's happening at a given time. Ask yourself if Ed Sheeran came out in the '60s, '70s, or '80s, or even '90s, would he have gotten a record deal, and become a star? Probably not... But yes, he's talented and has the full package of skills needed to succeed today. What does that mean? You'll get a different answer from each person viewing the world and music from their experience and understanding as seen mostly within their "one-inch" picture frame. But I guarantee digital technology and more linear homogenous music that digital technology creates has something to do with it... Yes, the bar has been lowered from the days before the digital revolution. I think those of us old enough to experience the days when "editing" was NOT an option know that. Regardless, he's got a lot of confidence, and that in itself is worthy of admiration. If his music moves people that's great.

    ON F*CKIN POINT DAMO!
I totally agree with what you've said. Ed Sheeran sits in the pocket between the cool guys and the famous celebs - thats why he hits home every time! I specifically agree with your point about the acoustic concert at wembley stadium - Noel gallagher from Oasis said a similar thing and it was the reason Oasis were always in the newspaper is that they started things; I quote 'the newspaper can say whatever they want about us, just as long as we're on the front!" Ed Sheeran is the modern nice guy version of Oasis, and the newspaper is social media.
I don't think anyone can say Ed sheeran is shit; because his record speaks for itself. Simple.
It's not a personal thing, it's business and Ed has the business in his hands.

Basically you're saying that those five things for sucess is
    1-write songs for weddings
2-let someone remix your songs in order to get in the club scene
3-do as many pr stunts as You can
4-release and /or write christmas songs
    5-collab with someone famous
You're not talking about anything artistic here.you're talking about business, which is not right or wrong.just a way to handle things
What if your music doesn't really fit into the club scene?what if you're trying to reach another kind of audience which doesn't have anything to do with family parties and weddings?about the "club scene" thing...that became the cheapest way to make a fast buck and get some hits for people who only listens 4 on the floor type music(some of them never care who did the original).
All of that doesn't make this guy better than any of us unkown musicians,or us worst or wrong.once you get into the music you learn what to do or not to do.
Later on,you learn to look carefully on how to make it happen.of course one actually can use all this information and make your "own version", but there's plenty of different ways to do it.don't forget that "market"and "promotion"doesn't work the same way everywhere,in some countrys they use other ways and some music are more or less appealing to different audiences i think there's many things to take into consideration than the sucess of this guy

    • @camrose306
      @camrose306 4 года назад

Comprehension is key. Since you dont understand I'll explain. He never said you HAD to make wedding songs and be in the club seen. He was using those as examples. He WAS saying that you should try to get your music into as many markets as possible though. If your music becomes associated with something, then people tend to have a stronger connection with it. And with the PR stunts its just common sense. Being a successful artist is all about getting In front of as many people as possible and having them like you and your music. When Ed Sheeran goes up to a fan in public he creates a memeory they will never forget and in turn somebody who will likely be a lifelong fan. Also the people who see it will imagine being in those fans shoes and potentially become a new fan or stronger fan.

    • @misterknightowlandco

Use these principles to appeal to people in your scene. Use social media properly to entertain and inform your crowd. Collaborate with other musicians in your scene who might be a little further down the line with a bigger following. That way you get in front of a bigger audience. Your band might go from playing at a pub in front of your friends to a proper full on club gig with a couple hundred packed in it. Its not pop megastardom but its a massive increase. Find something you can do in your scene that makes you stand out. Ok, your not writing songs for the first dance at a wedding, but maybe write something that makes you standout within your scene. Maybe try remixes or add sone electric beats or something. Just something that makes you different, in a good way, so you can stand out. The principles are the same just for a different crowd on a smaller scale.

Hi there, stoked to discover this channel, just got back from the USA where I met up with songwriters from the online songwriting challenge community Songfight.org (it’s free, it’s brutal, it’s great) aaaaand while I was there @johnmayer played 90minutes away so of course I went. I’m so glad you mention him in this video because I feel like he is doing a bunch of these things himself - we can see this unfolding in real time - he collabs a lot these days (often with people with exponentially more followers/current relevance in the pop scene than he has) has his own IGTV show where he also does mini collabs with the guests (Khalid, Lil Nas X, Maggie Rogers) tapping into all their markets... also the short promo clips he is doing all the time for his current tour are JUST delicious and smart, and really simple. Seeing him again was a great shot in the arm to double down and press on and DO the collabs that local and really cool creators are WILLING to do with me... take them on tour and have some fun making videos in the city mall etc... There are so many people at the party we can be talking to before we need to worry about pestering the host straight away 🙏🏼🙏🏼 I don’t even think I knew about the Sheeran x Mayer collab before this 😯 you know where I’m going rn!! 🖤🌶

I think you make good points and everything you say has value, but it's so depressing that Ed Sheeran is the great example to bands, in the 90's we had Kurt Cobain :(

    • @DamianKeyes

Yeah I see your point however music is subjective.. I hated Nirvana the first time around as I loved metal and Grunge to me was untalented bad musicianship.. I love it now I’m a bit older and wiser but it shows music is subjective and a lot of people love Ed Sheeran

    • @DamianKeyes

+Judas Goat while this is true, in the 90’s I hated Cobain the first time around as I was into metal and to me and my mates he couldn’t play like Dream Theatre or Pantera.
It just goes to show music is subjective and we all love different things. People do love Ed at the moment even if he is a bit bland.
Ps I love Nirvana now 😊

Sure the guy persevered but many others have too. As you said Sheeran is surrounded by very smart individuals and huge record label partners. While I do think anyone could learn a lesson about consumer engagement, suggesting a metal band could foster the same kind of sentiment is kinda silly because said band aren't going to write a 1999 tune either. Breaking the first dance style market, club anthem remix market??? C'mon. I find your advice completely applicable if a manager is selling the fake boyfriend style act, (the act your nana likes, that beta males like etc), but it's not across the board advice.

Yeah, but this is a bit like saying you can have the same physique of an actor in a superhero film just by doing exercise and a having a certain diet, while ignoring the entire industry behind that actor’s success. Sheeran is just a figure head, with millions of dollars in marketing, songwriters, publicists and connections paving his way and pulling strings. If they want to make you a star, they can do it. They have all the mathematical charts showing which “buttons to push,” and how to play on people’s psyche. It’s like the brainwashing of a catchy commercial. Corporations will spend big money on commercials because they know they work, it’s a sound investment. Current Pop music is just a commercial for itself, Sheeran is just the face. He’s like the “Flo of Progressive.”

I want to ask this question I am curious about... Do men and women have to work differently in these examples? When I think of Ed as the voice of the first dance the women sees it as a another mans beautiful voice right? The man sees it as himself showing the women he can do exactly what Ed is singing.... so now I imagined myself singing as a female that story doesn't work.... Now do women in the industry have to search a different lyric approach? or what if they don't act as feminine like a wedding... I know theres more things to do then that but it just hit me to think if gender matters how you sing what you sing and the audience, I'm quite new to this :)

Matthew Hobson but music is subjective so surely that’s an opinion the same way as many people would listen to your music choices and might find them pretentious or over complicated? So please be honest, and embrace the REAL reason he managed to float up there. Because, as an artist, you could try as hard as you want to......and if the club door doesn't swing on you.....well, I think you may get what I'm saying. It's.....evil. And unfair!

He can't write for shit, and for that matter neither can Adele(Except Chasing pavements which is inexplicably good). I agree with your video. He does about everything else right. At this point, you don't need writing. You need vibe, hard work, aesthetics(I mean like aesthetics of sound, not necessarily looks). He sounds good. His recordings are good. He's a good performer.
