The helmet saved my life a few times. One fall (a car stopped and then started forward when I had the right of way) I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt (and the helmet). I left so much skin on the asphalt, the scars are still visible. When I saw the car starting to move I hit the breaks, so this was low speed, probably 20 or 30 km/h by the time I hit the ground. Another time, almost at stand still, my bike slid on a wet rock and it fell. I landed on my knee with my not insignificant weight and the bike on top. If I wasn't wearing padded pants, it would have been good bye, knee. My point? Don't go for the most expensive items, but get full gear and wear it all the time.

That’s not true at all, I ride dirt so the gear wears through really quick, and most of the cheaper stuff actually seems to be just as good quality if not better. like for instance fox racing gloves don’t even last a whole season while other brands that don’t even focus on gloves as much as fox do, last forever
The hands thing is soooooo true. In college rack we were racing on concrete, 40 meters, and I tripped over the guy to my right.. tore all the skin off of the palm of my hand and messed my shoulder/back up pretty bad just from scrapes. Like, bad. I imagine that was right around 20 mph if I was at the top of my run. Imagine a low speed 30 mph on a bike or even 60.. let alone 100+ 😳
A friend bought a full second hand racing outfit. Everything fit except the gloves. So he tried it out on his first ride without the gloves, crashed at around 60mph and slid on the asphalt in front of me. He only had injuries on his hands - but those looked really gnarly. I have never skipped the gloves since then.
In addition to the helmet certifications there's also now ECE 22.06 as well as some brands incorporating MIPS. Both of which include certification for protection against rotational injury.
And MIPS is the cheapest thing a manufacturer can do to protect you. Sad that not many helmets have MIPS. I always make sure my helmets are ECE, and now there are very few manufacturers releasing FIM certified helmets which very few get mainly for MotoGP.
great content sir. i learned first hand about how a boot can save your foot. my doc martens kept a peg from entering my foot just below the ankle. i can only imagine how bad it would have been with low top canvas vans.
I’m in my third year of riding, so not quite a n00b anymore I’d say. On the no-helmet thing….I have taken a large bug-splat in the visor almost EVERY time I get out on the back roads. I shudder to think how that would go if I had no helmet (or just a half-lid!😳)! Good vid as always my dude! 👍🏼
For an inexpensive helmet, my first helmet was a FLY Revolt. It's about 150 bucks and d.o.t and snell rated. Has multiple air vents and a pin lock visor. Visors are easily switchable from clear to tinted ect. I got a bell riding jacket with a removable winter insert for 200.
Dress for the slide, not just the ride. Just because you get away with it, doesn't mean you always get away with it. Be smart or foolish, choose one. Thanks yam!
I'm new to motorcycles but came from a mountain biking background. I'm no stranger to hitting the ground and the thought of coming off a motorcycle unprotected gives me the chills. I'm also 6'6" so buying something off the rack is unlikely. What I've done until I can get something sorted (likely custom) is pick up some Carhartt stuff and wax the crap out of it with about 4 coats of sno-seal. I haven't tested it yet but I've read a bit on waxed cotton on forum threads and they say it works. Its also water and wind resistant. Plus, Carhartt pants fit relaxed enough to add some padded shorts, knee and shin guards if you want to go that route. I figure anything is better than nothing at all.
Spent most of my funds on a Shoei RF-1200, then bought budget friendly gloves, jacket and shoes. Rev’it Arrow shoes are a solid choice and look great as well. Also wear their Eclipse mesh jacket. It’s super comfy and allows for a lot of air flow. Both products are relatively inexpensive ($179 each) and I’d definitely recommend them to riders on a budget. That said, it blows my mind to see riders just wearing helmets around here. Proper gear is one of things that I’d rather have and not need, than need and not have.
bro please get some real boots next, I just broke my ankle wearing hi tops like that. All it took was someone hitting me at 20 MPH, and I fell off. Those shoes are better than converses or work boots...but ultimately don't do shit compared to a real knee high boot.

Right now, 2022, in some countries from Europe (like the one I live at) when you wanna get your motorbike license, and you go to a driving school and do your very first practice... You HAVE to wear Helmet, Jacket, Protection pants and boots. They do not let you take a single practice without the full gear I mention. That's now being done in every single place I know in my country, like by law. If the driving schools don't make you wear it they can get a huge fine. So imagine my face when I see videos of people in other countries riding without even a helmet. It blows my mind really. The quicker we get used to wear gear, and to see people wearing gear every single day on the streets, the better IMHO. Ride safe guys.
@@Yowzoe currently Spain. I don't know for sure if other european countries do that as well. Anyway if you don't bring your own equipment the driving schools let you use some of their own. But you gotta wear it for the practises and the exam.
Cost of PPE is never an excuse. I outfitted myself with a full face helmet, boots, and glove for under $150. Granted - my helmet is not a Snell rated helmet. I will be upgrading each piece as time goes on but there's no excuse to not start with a full set of gear.
examples to wear your gear. one time I was long boarding learning to slide and caught an edge sliding going about 30 mph and I flew in the air flipped all the way over and my hand was the first thing to hit the ground back of the hand too and I had gloves on but just a T shirt and my whole left arm and shoulder got sucked under in between my legs so that arm got road rash and it sucked my face to the ground only had a half bowl helmet on so I had to just put my face down chin to chest and hope my helmet hit first and the helmet hit first thank god and I slid about 15 ft on the helmet and my arm all the way into the curb and also the helmet slide along the curb for about 3 ft so I basically avoided becoming a vegetable or dying. and at best would of had really really bad scares on my face if I had no helmet on. furthermore my cousin did the same thing on a penny board just downhill skating not even sliding without a helmet and he got knocked out cracked his skull open and had to be rushed to the ER. thankfully he is ok. wear your gear.

I have TCX Rush 2 boots. They are quite litterally the most comfortable pair of footwear I own, I wear them 12-14 hours a day sometimes without any discomfort
I think it's a big misconception that denim is a better option than other pants. Have you ever tripped or fallen with jeans? Rips every time and you scrape your skin. Definitely get dedicated pants, denim doesn't do crap to protect you.
Thank you - fashion denim trousers ( pants) offer "ZERO" protection in an accident . Check out Motocap Australia for more information on which "pants" to wear.
After riding for 15 years I was hit by a truck at 70mph 6 months ago. Was just cruising on the highway enjoying the weather and a truck didn't see me and tried to cross the road. Had less then a second to react. Was in the ICU for a week and broke 11 bones, had a brain bleed and had emergency surgery on my knee. Had I not been fully geared (helmet, jacket, Kevlar riding jeans, boots and gloves) I wouldn't be here right now. Craziest part was being conscious the entire time and vividly remembering every second. Listen to Yammie, gear is extremely important. Even when its hot out. I'm pretty much fully recovered minus the knee pain now but I couldn't walk for nearly a month after the accident. Don't skimp out on the gear.
Not sure why so many gurus and sales people talk about track gear, beginner gear, road, gear etc. An off at 30 kph on the track is the same as a 30kph off on the road. In fact the road seems way more dangerous du to all the immovable objects around you like curbs, poles, parked cars etc. As tempting as it is to wear shorts, no jacket etc it is the dumbest thing I see fellow motorcyclists do regularly. I had a few offs decades ago and now its ATGATT or I take the truck. It just isn't worth risking life and limb. Safety first my friends!
Totally agree with getting the right gear as a beginner. I wear my big leather work boots when I ride, currently and I don’t have a jacket yet but gloves and a helmet are a must
My bro bought a Honda VFR 800 at 19 years old for his first bike. first time riding wore gym shorts T-shirt, flip flops and an old football helmet... literally 10 seconds after getting on the bike he laid it down and rip up his hands 🤣
I'm prioritizing the jacket because I already have some riding gear from when I was younger I've got a good helmet nice leather chaps decent gloves so my priority is jacket shoes then better leg protection
Definitely agree after my 2nd fall my hand got tore up nothing broken thank baby Jesus going to get my gear before riding after I get my baby back from the shop
Hey Yammie, you've done some deep dive videos on helmets, but there is one aspect I haven't seen you cover. Determining the shape of your neck bean. I think its too subjective to have someone look at your head and say yeah, it looks like a cantaloupe or no it looks more like a rugby ball. Is there a more accurate method? My husband has always struggled getting a helmet he feels fits well. So this year while he was agonizing (and I'm not being dramatic here) over which helmet to buy. So, I employed a very self proclaimed scientific method to determine his head shape. I know I'm and intermediate oval, I wear a brand of helmet that has always fit me consistently and they are intermediate oval. So, I measured his head front to back, and from ear to ear and comparing measurements. I find only a 0.75" difference between the two measurements. So we ordered a model of Arai offered in Round shape. Viola, that's his proper fit.
Back in 2017 I got in an accident at a low speed in a school zone 😅. A minivan pulled out and hit me (she was at fault). I was wearing full gear from the waist up. So scorpion helmet, textile jacket, and rebut gloves. Had road rash on one leg, broke me left thumb and right wrist. But my head and face were fine, and not a scratch on my upper body. I definitely recommend wearing full gear!
I don't think that lace up boots are a great idea for motorcycle riding. Laces can get caught on shifters or brake levers. Zipper and buckle boots are a big improvement.
Good stuff, but papa Yam for beginners may I suggest some knee guards to go with those gloves, that is if you can't get the pants. I remember the knee pains I had after my first week of riding due to my low speed drops.
@@agawdsparadise3782 thanks for the reply, by the way, I need to know how do riding jeans work? Do you wear them over other apparel or are they meant to be stand alones? I totaly disagree on your stance for helmets, especialy with the ece 22.05 standard which has designated spots they test which can be reinforced just for the test while premium brands like shoei and arai dont skimp and do it so they just barely pass the test, I would rather get a budget jacket and get a 500$ arai or shoei because bones can heal but brain damage cant be reversed. Buy quality rather then just look for the sticker, a D is a pass, but why take a D when you can have a A+.
More or less agreed the only real standard for a good safe helmet is a FIA aproved standard, ECE standard is a little better than nothing, US DOT standard isn't even worthy to mention it in the 21 century.
I recommend a vest (cut) as a minimum for a jacket. It does give some protection from small objects being hurled at you the vehicle in front if you, has a cooling effect if you're sweating and if a little protection if you were to go down.
If your budget is that slim that you cant afford a low lvl, cheap, second hand jacket and trousers maybe you should wait just a little bit longer to hop on that two wheeler. So me and my dad both ride bike, well he mostly rides his 50cc scooter nowadays. But he always made fun of me for investing in a good helmet for the reason "We have helmets at home." We do, it's just that they're those cheap af Chinese helmets you get at dealerships here. So I decided to prove who's helmet was better with a simple kick test(since I'm into kickboxing). I have an MT Revenge skull and roses, so we went outside put the helmets on a dummy and I kicked mine first and it fucking hurt.. But his helmet... You could hear that juice crack of it break.. So I made him get a proper helmet after that otherwise I'd take his keys away.

Will have to disagree about no jacket as a new rider. I got assaulted off my Yamaha YBR 125 Custom by some nasty little people (came up behind me and hit me over the head with his hand while the pillion was filming it) and the fact I was wearing full gear allowed me to walk away pretty much completely unscathed. I don't even have a bike yet. Never ridden before. I take the MSF in roughly a month at a harley dealer about a 50 minute drive from me. I've also accidently became a Dainese simp. I got Carbon 3 short gloves, York Air shoes, and I have a Sevilla Air Tex Jacket that will be delivered in a few days. The York Air shoes I replaced the laces with no tie laces. Basically the laces are multiple rubber strands that have an anchor for the top eyelet. You lace them up while wearing the shoe, get the fit you want. Then anchor them down. They've been really comfy. A slight pain to put the shoes on, but when they are on they don't want to come off. Once I get the hang of putting them on they'll be easier to get on. No laces to accidently get caught up on pegs or whatever. I, as a person with 0 knowledge, highly suggest them. I got a 3/4 helmet cheap DOT helmet for the course. I have 3 helmets in mind for when I actually buy a bike and ride. They are the Arai Corsair X, Shoei RF-1400, and Ruroc Atlas 3.0. I'll probably get the RF-1400 first. It depends on what is available when I can afford to buy one. Stay safe everyone.

@@Loganrx i have ece and mips
@@Fo4assaultriflefan92 same here, my instructor always told me if it’s too hot to ride with gear. Then it’s not the day to ride. But to each their own
great content sir. i learned first hand about how a boot can save your foot. my doc martens kept a peg from entering my foot just below the ankle. i can only imagine how bad it would have been with low top canvas vans.
I have arai helmet, taichi glove, alpine jacket and alpine boots. But damn i ride a scooter :)
but the concrete dont care what you ride if you fall :)
Scooter team as well. Since the boots are for pegs and the piercey motorcycle bits, I think they're a waste. Otherwise, I agree, 100% geared baby!
Dress for the slide, not just the ride. Just because you get away with it, doesn't mean you always get away with it. Be smart or foolish, choose one. Thanks yam!
ty papa yam for the safety tips. I always go atgatt & a few years ago it saved my life on the i-10. got a new set of gear from the shop, cheers!
Gear is not the stuff to cheap out on. This stuff can save not only your life , it can safe you from the kind of pain that you can't put a price on.
100% agree, I get knocked on because I bought top tier gear , but I rather be safe than sorry.
@@noahcovell4698 good advice, from someone whos learned the hard way. Squids, listen to this man!
@@noahcovell4698 I had a lowside a couple weeks ago and got a pretty gnarly gash on my leg just above the boot. I’m upgrading to a full height boot with the insurance payout
Wow. What country are you in?
@@Yowzoe currently Spain. I don't know for sure if other european countries do that as well. Anyway if you don't bring your own equipment the driving schools let you use some of their own. But you gotta wear it for the practises and the exam.
@@Mr_Phoskitos It makes obvious sense, I wish they do that in my state in the U.S.
Cost of PPE is never an excuse. I outfitted myself with a full face helmet, boots, and glove for under $150. Granted - my helmet is not a Snell rated helmet. I will be upgrading each piece as time goes on but there's no excuse to not start with a full set of gear.
Right. But what you can until you can buy better. ECE, and Aramid full gear can be purchased for $350.
Gloves come in handy, I love it.
A great video for riders like me! Thanks for taking the time to inform riders of all levels. Peace.
examples to wear your gear. one time I was long boarding learning to slide and caught an edge sliding going about 30 mph and I flew in the air flipped all the way over and my hand was the first thing to hit the ground back of the hand too and I had gloves on but just a T shirt and my whole left arm and shoulder got sucked under in between my legs so that arm got road rash and it sucked my face to the ground only had a half bowl helmet on so I had to just put my face down chin to chest and hope my helmet hit first and the helmet hit first thank god and I slid about 15 ft on the helmet and my arm all the way into the curb and also the helmet slide along the curb for about 3 ft so I basically avoided becoming a vegetable or dying. and at best would of had really really bad scares on my face if I had no helmet on. furthermore my cousin did the same thing on a penny board just downhill skating not even sliding without a helmet and he got knocked out cracked his skull open and had to be rushed to the ER. thankfully he is ok. wear your gear.
i run a MT Draken helmet .. dot and ece .. ran me 68 bucks .. gloves 25 pants and jacket 90 and boots 70 .. so total here 253 for a full set of gear .. and i`m from DENMARK so allrdy expensive as hell.. so there is 0 excuse .remember full set of gear costs less then a wheelchair or casket ...
Boots,
I got into an accident when a car pulled out infront of me. About 15-20mph on impact. My passenger broker her foot, I didn't even have a scratch on me. Wear your boots.
I have TCX Rush 2 boots. They are quite litterally the most comfortable pair of footwear I own, I wear them 12-14 hours a day sometimes without any discomfort
Love TCX
I think it's a big misconception that denim is a better option than other pants. Have you ever tripped or fallen with jeans? Rips every time and you scrape your skin. Definitely get dedicated pants, denim doesn't do crap to protect you.
Thank you - fashion denim trousers ( pants) offer "ZERO" protection in an accident . Check out Motocap Australia for more information on which "pants" to wear.
Excellent message!! This needs to be said, especially by those with the bully pulpit like you. Thanks!
First Motorcycle I rode was a Yamaha 250cc Super Moto (Road-only Dual Sport pretty much)... while rocking Pink Converse!
Don’t ride with anything with shoelaces twice I’ve got them hung on the brake lever and have fallen over at stoplights
Thanks yammie, I just bought a 2020 honda rebel 500 as my first ever motorcycle and I'm super excited to ride😁👍
Great video Yam! Good advice!
Great vid mate.... Thanks for sharing all of these safety tips.
I'm prioritizing the jacket because I already have some riding gear from when I was younger I've got a good helmet nice leather chaps decent gloves so my priority is jacket shoes then better leg protection
I used to do tear off and the toughest Milwaukee gloves would turn into wet paper as soon as I tear some asphalt up. Even the fine kind.
Time to trade my flip flops for motocycle gloves.
and my work gloves for motorcycle boots.
Great background music 😊
Definitely agree after my 2nd fall my hand got tore up nothing broken thank baby Jesus going to get my gear before riding after I get my baby back from the shop
Great info. I agree with everything you have said.
Keep it up thank you!
Just a 10 minute add for his website
Back in 2017 I got in an accident at a low speed in a school zone 😅. A minivan pulled out and hit me (she was at fault). I was wearing full gear from the waist up. So scorpion helmet, textile jacket, and rebut gloves. Had road rash on one leg, broke me left thumb and right wrist. But my head and face were fine, and not a scratch on my upper body. I definitely recommend wearing full gear!
Did insurance cover everything for you?
I love the adage protect the areas of your body you don't want to lose 👍
I don't think that lace up boots are a great idea for motorcycle riding. Laces can get caught on shifters or brake levers. Zipper and buckle boots are a big improvement.
I saw the thumbnail and didn't realize it was a yammy video and I thought Alpha M was dissing my adidas
Good stuff, but papa Yam for beginners may I suggest some knee guards to go with those gloves, that is if you can't get the pants. I remember the knee pains I had after my first week of riding due to my low speed drops.
Facts ,my riding jeans have knee pads I love em
@@agawdsparadise3782 thanks for the reply, by the way, I need to know how do riding jeans work? Do you wear them over other apparel or are they meant to be stand alones? Also, what I had in mind for beginners are those pads that are independent, kind of like the skate board thingies, they don't cost much but they do help alot.
More or less agreed the only real standard for a good safe helmet is a FIA aproved standard,
ECE standard is a little better than nothing, US DOT standard isn't even worthy to mention it in the 21 century.
Spend as much on the LID as you do on the rest of your gear, thats what i was always told. NEW LID and second hand everything else if needs be.
You guys really took your liberties with the effects on this video
I recommend a vest (cut) as a minimum for a jacket. It does give some protection from small objects being hurled at you the vehicle in front if you, has a cooling effect if you're sweating and if a little protection if you were to go down.
If your budget is that slim that you cant afford a low lvl, cheap, second hand jacket and trousers maybe you should wait just a little bit longer to hop on that two wheeler. I lowsided my first bike at 30km/h (18-19mph) and was wearing used goretex pants i bought for less than 80usd and a jacket for less than 50usd. I walked away without a scratch. The gear was torn thou

You can get serious injuries even if you fall at 30mph. I brole my arm and scrapped my palms to flesh just from a bicycle fall at 5mph. Gear is must!
Cow boy boots are the move
Got my first arai helmet last week. The fit and comfort is night and day compared to a cheaper helmet. I’ll never go back to a cheaper one.
Helpful hint.Since the Covid ruined a LOT of small businesses, bike shops put tons of their inventory on Ebay to liquidate.I picked up a new Forcefield CE2 armored under-suit for 90 bucks and a new Astars GP Plus R V3 for 250.There's great deals to be had.Ride safe.
Just be aware counterfeit gear and factory seconds and off the book production runs are a thing. There is a big difference between buying a fake watch or purse and buying fake safety gear.

ATGATT. In Germany if you want your motorcycle licence, you have to own a full set of protection. Including a jacket with a back protector. If you don want to wear them after you got your license, thats allowed, besides the helmet of course thats always required. But if you already own it, why not wear it.

@@babbittron yeah it's kinda weird at first wearing padded jacket and pants and full helmet gloves and boots. I feel so bulky. Still getting used to it.
Also cheep gloves will only last one maybe two slides. I had a cheep pair and protected my hand from the initial impact but on the side they ripped to shreds and I did get some scraps on my fingers.
My Gortex jacket has a hole in the shoulder where I hit road though and they wrote off my bike. Full gear I would personally recommend. Even an off road vest to wear under a hoodie would be better than nothing.
If you want a higher rated cheaper helmet I would recommend the Bell SRT. It’s DOT and Snell approved while it only costs like $220.
Its easy to tell who's crashed and who hasn't. The ones who haven't been down, shorts, no shirt, flip flops, no helmet. The ones who are smart or have been down, proper protection 👍👌😉

A Dianese jacket saved my arm for the lost cost of $170. I’d go with the Shoei helmet over the ruroc. If you like the Arai try it on first if you can. Some of their inner geometry doesn’t quite match the description
@@Otterplus My problem is I wear a XS helmet and not many motorcycle gear places in my area. Fortunately I can order through cyclegear if needed. I'll definitely try the arai on though. Thank you for the tip. I appreciate it.
On the subject of gloves, I've actually seen more than a few riders out her in SoCal wear gloves as their only piece of non-mandatroy sfety equipment (helmets are required out here by law). They'reriding tank tops, shjorts, and tennis shoes, but still wear gloves.
