I'm from Minnesota and this bridge collapse was devastating and truly shook everyone to their core. Virtually any Minnesotan around the Twin Cities has a story about them or their friends/loved ones being near the bridge when it collapsed. My uncle is was driving off the bridge just seconds before it collapsed. In some photos you can see his car. This bridge was insanely busy and a common route people took to work. It was a very scary day.
Never thought I'd hear about the 35W collapse on here! I live literally a mile from it (University of Minnesota, East Bank) and every time I pass over it I'm reminded of what happened. I was just a kid when it happened.
Not sure it this totally fits the theme but the Tasman Bridge disaster in Hobart, Australia resulted in the bridge needing to be rebuilt as it was a key connection in the city. A zinc ship hit a pylon and sank to the bottom of the Derwent River causing the middle sections of the bridge to collapse into the water, and damaging the riverbed so they couldn’t put a replacement pylon in the same spot. They used ferries to get across the river until the new bridge was completed.
It's very interesting and sad to learn about these mistakes, as many can be catastrophic economically and very dangerous to the overall local community, as infrastructure is so essential.
$ 1 Billion hadn't been spent on "cleaning". It had been spent on companies saying they "cleaned". Sure...they cleaned that money right out of the taxpayers' hands.
"The new bridge was designed ... to resemble the old bridge as much as possible ... however the memories of that accident remain to this day" - is that so surprising since the bridge LOOKS THE SAME?!
Hi there. Can you make a video on the Padma Bridge? It cost approximately 31 billion dollars. Can explain why is this so expensive? I'm a fan of your videos.
Ottawa, ON Canada. O-train light rail commuter system. Project ongoing. Already cursed with line closures, minor derailments, equipment failures, exceeding cost, time extensions. Brand new system already fraught with partial line shut downs and loss of service intermittently. Considering how small the lines are in comparison to most other rail lines. It seems doomed to fail

11:03 The building at 200 East Randolph Street, Chicago was built in 1973 as The Standard Oil Building. It was first renamed to the Amoco in 1985, and then again to the AON Center in 1998. To Chicagoan's it will always be the Standard Oil Building!
I remember when the Seongsu Bridge in Seoul collapsed, I was a high school student, and my homeroom teacher was saddened by the fact that many female students from the school she taught had died.
There's growing demand for facade based buildings in metro cities of India. We have hot & humid environment almost 10 months & these facades could be faar more dangerous..
The AON Building was not built as such, it was built and originally named the Standard Oil Building, nicknamed "Big Stan" It was renamed the AON Center about 25 years after it was built.
When giving an object as a weight comparison it's customary to use an object EVERYONE can relate to, the weight of a full grown lion is not one of those.
At the end of the day we make the best of life while living on a spinning rock slingshotting across the universe. The fact that we have done as much as we have is a shock l, frankly.
Sometimes architects don't do enough research. Other buildings have been faced with marble, which proved to be an inappropriate material and had to be replaced at a cost of millions.
OK stop, there is zero evidence of global sea level rise anywhere but thanks for playing the "we are too stupid to see the facts" game in the San Fran case against the naval yard mess. Just report the lies as truth to make yourselves feel good.

And well what do you know, Hunter Point/ Bay View has some of the highest rates of cancer in San Francisco. I wonder why. Plus on top of that, it's one of the poorest areas in the city.
What about the Sewol Ferry disaster in South Korea? However, it has to do with sailing, not construction. Glad the SK government developed that emergency inspection program for all its bridges & other construction. EVERY country should have that type of program.
A good reminder that a majority of accidents, construction and otherwise, tend to occur because of human negligence, companies cutting corners tends to be the majority Deepwater Horizon being among the very good examples of what happens when executives try to skimp on safeties.

Let the SF homeless live in those million dollar homes in the radioactive shipyard. They would be living large (for a while) and maybe the city sidewalks won’t have so much human shit.
Thanks for your support on this series! Do you know of any other major construction mistakes? 🏗👇

Craziest thing to me is that Tetra Tech still has the contract. Our government is truly incompetent.
Westgate bridge. Victoria Australia. 1970. Australia’s worst industrial accident. 35 construction workers died in the collapse during the build.
Great content! Love your channel!
Interesting video and one of the first to notice it
Thanks man :D

from just $250 million become $30 billion....and all gone to waste
In my fictional world, all this project already finished and successful

Many die because of greed and people died and they let those greedy murderers continue and the victims are still suffering.

The west gate bridge in Melbourne Australia collapsed when construction was happening.
Full grown lion ? How much is that in giraffes ? AON Center ? I thought it was the Standard Oil tower.
Most of such mistakes sounds like simply going for the extra EXTRA cheap option.
