I absolutely had a blissful wallow in this extravaganza of a vlog. I could listen to you talk about books and life for hours because it never feels like hours because I am so absorbed... and now I am waffling. Have a lovely week, Simon and I look forward to the next eggstravaganza 😅 🥚🐣
I see what you did there 🍳 I love the idea of a blissful wallow. That turns something that people think of as negative into something fabulous. Love it, love it. And thank you for such a lovely compliment. Ps. I love a waffle.
I loved your catch up, thanks Simon, and there's nothing wrong with a longer video when it's you :) Joanna Cannon came to my University in Norwich and was amazing so it was great to see her on stage with you. Elizabeth Day has been too and those were two of my favourite events (I volunteer for LitFest). Thank you for giving me some more books for my TBR and I'm glad you had a lovely birthday 🥚🐔
Love a long vlog! So much great food, lots of Chris, some bin content and of course so fantastic books. I’ve been waiting for Weyward for so long through the library. It should be in hopefully next week. The Key in the Lock sounds really good as well. Looking forward to your Demon Copperhead thoughts. I’m a bit daunted by it. 🐣
I was quite daunted by it too Su. I can’t pretend otherwise. I shall say no more though as don’t want to spoil it… well I don’t know what Mum’s said yet, so I don’t want to spoil my half. Hahaha.
I read Hold Your Fire because of your review! Found some of my favourite short stories in there and reminded me/put in the mood to read more short story collections, which I'm really enjoying! So, all in all, thank you! Put in a reserve at my library for Weyward by 15 minutes into the video and then one for How To Fail, which I definitely need 😅 🥚🐣
First of all, weathered spice was an actual lol moment. Applause for the flawless execution. Second, hope the beanbag is still going strong🤞 I really enjoyed the structure of the vlog and it was a real treat to get to see snippets of your events with the four authors. Plus, the setup along with the dusty rose sofa just looks gorgeous (not that anyone asked…). Related to your reflections on friendships, thank you for sharing. Also, can I just say, Chris is a joy. And finally - sorry for waffling - an hour with you flies by 🐝🐥
What a lovely comment and what a lovely compliment. Thank you! Bean bag is doing great. They literally ignore it. So I have brought them up well. They ignore plants too. I do feel like weathered spice at the moment, literally. Ha.
I recently finished ‘Weyward’ and loved it. I agree with you, I liked each character equally which is quite an achievement for Emilia Hart. I also liked the shorter chapters so I didn’t forget what was happening with each character. I also really enjoyed ‘Cherry Robbers’ by Sarai Walker recently. Thanks Simon x
I think Emilia has written such a great debut. I can’t wait to see what she writes next. I have Cherry Robbers on the TBR, so shall have to get to it sooner rather than later. Thanks for the reminder.
You know it’s going to be a good one when there is a black and white aside right off the bat! What if for the book thoughts before you begin reading you called them your preconceptions? I loved seeing the snippets of your author interviews (one Covid thing I wish we could keep are virtual author events) and oh my goodness Chris and more Chris!! What a treat! Your 42nd year is off to quite a start!! Buying extra popcorn for the Kingsolver masterpiece vlog!! 🐣🐥🥚
Hahaha. I am not sure it’ll be a masterpiece. I’ve only seen (my) half of it and I wouldn’t call it my best work. Hahaha. So maybe mum can save it. Glad you enjoyed the vlog and the mixture of content within it. I’m quite chuffed with it… though it us looooooong.
I really enjoyed The Key in the Lock. I found it gripping and liked the way you would get inklings of the truth but still had the odd surprise. I can't wait to see what Beth Underdown does next. I hope she doesn't wait too many years before publishing her next novel. 🥚
All of these books sound so interesting! I don't read a lot of nonfiction, but I am very interested in the topic of friendship and Friendaholic sounds great. I also really like gothic historical mysteries, but I somehow forget to read them when I have them. Last week, I made myself read The Corset, by Laura Purcell, and really liked it. The Lock in the Key might be the next one I get!
I’m the same with forgetting to read the things I love. That’s one of the reasons I’m trying to read by whim but also head to things/genres/authors I know I’ve enjoyed in the past and see how I get on with them now. I need to read The Corset, that’s been on my shelves a while.
🐥🐦🐧🐓🦆🦃🦅🦢🦉🦤🦩🦜🦚🐦⬛🪿 A whole flock of birds to wish you happy birthday! 😄 I'm late watching this and it's made me want to eat hot cross buns again 😂 such a fabby reading vlog, all those books sounded great! I love a witchy book and A Tidy Ending sounds right up my street of books so I shall be diving into that one. Thanks Simon ☺️

Interesting that you like Isaac and the Egg - I have heard very mixed things until now, but I trust your opinion. P.S. I think ‘expectations’ was the word you were looking for!
Ha. You say that about Isaac and the Egg but remember McGlue. And also we haven’t even got to Women Talking yet. I worry ‘expectations’ might put too much pressure on it. There is a word. I just haven’t found it yet, even more weeks and books on. Ha.
Happy 41st birthday, Simon! I love your new plan of giving intermittent updates on the books as you go. I need that Friend-Aholic book, like now! Chris had a fun time out. Ha! Anywho, great vlog! 🪺🐣
Chris had a fabulous time out. Ha. Thanks for the birthday wishes, I feel like I might be eeking this one out almost as long as I did the last one. Hahaha.

Always interested to see what other people think about friendships.
There’s always Blackwells (and free shipping) if Friendaholic isn’t out in Canada yet. I don’t really prepare hugely. I shall talk about that bit more in a future vlog but basically, I read it and see what themes come up for me and then go and chat about it and them. Maybe I’ll try and vlog the process with a few books for future events. The Kate Mosse one could be fun actually.
Happy birthday, Simon! Gosh, I remember you celebrating 40 and it feels like yesterday. How has it been a year? I read around half of Weyward (with the gorgeous US cover, but sadly no flying crow!) but then DNF’d, not because it was bad but because I wasn’t up for reading more about abused women. Plus like you I was hoping for more nature magic, and I thought I knew more or less what was going to happen so it just wasn’t as propulsive. I heard the audio was good, so I’ve put it on hold and will try again when I get it. I’m currently reading In Memoriam, by Alice Winn, and just blown away so far. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s on the Booker list.
Another lovely Elizabeth recommended me In Memoriam only last week, I have it and am planning on reading it post Women’s Prize longlist and Carol Sheilds Prize shortlist. Oh and… time flies when your having fun (or in my case a winter or burn out too. Ha!)
Happy you had a lovely birthday, throwing shade, I had my 74th and yes, believe me, I abscribe to your philosophy, "it is a privelege getting old." I am enjoying Artemis by Andy Weir and several others, including an old Robert Benchley and an old Mary Roberts Rhinehart. Pizza!
Right ?!?! Regarding Billy not my Billy- not mine either and took me a good episode or 3 to like, get over it . Blahdiggityblah, ty for another 💎 of a video Birthday Season Bookworm!!! 📖🪱💚
🥚Love me a really long reading vlog. 🥚 Also, unless you've read a Du Maurier, and didn't put it in a vlog, I'm pretty sure the last one you read was Frenchman's Creek, in the vlog titled 'Books Set By The Sea... By The Sea'. From May of 2021. It's even in the thumbnail.
Simon, what is the name of the book you and your Mum were talking about in a past video, about Eyam during the Plague? I remember learning about it at primary school, and it’s always stuck with me. X
Completely agree about age - it’s a privilege to stay on the planet for longer. The draught excluder immediately made me think - oh Aunty dogs - not a clue what that means except the dog’s look like aunties. Aw what a lovely birthday serenade. I’ve ordered The Key in the Lock. So we shall see. It’s a bit different for me but that’s good - right? I bet you’re a lovely friend. I actually don’t have any friends I’m not saying that looking for sympathy it’s just a fact. I have a couple of lovely neighbours but most of my mates are either living in another part of the world or actually dead and that’s not because of age is because of bad luck! (does that sound harsh. Sorry if it does). I have a lovely husband - he hasn’t got any friends either - We’re weird aren’t we? Great Vlog 🥚🦜
It is a privilege indeed. Especially as, like many people, I have had people die much too young and much too soon in my life (not sure I endorse the term bad luck on this one, ha!) so I try and live a bit extra for them.
Aah 😌 I just loved this vlog saved to enjoy with 🫖 and 🍰 also gave me some more ideas of books I want to read as you always do the never ending list thanks Simon 😆 📚 I do love the long vlogs feels more of an event and you have such interesting chat so thank you 🥚 🦢 🦢
@@SavidgeReads I did enjoy it. You put together a really nice blend of bookishness, shopping, and friends & family. I especially liked the wall of Beatles song titles, the hen do, and Chris singing Happy Birthday. Thank you, Simon.

It’s brilliant how books can make you think and help you find answers, and new phrases ha, in your brain.
@@SavidgeReads for sure!

Someone's bringing sexy back for 41 😝 happy birthday and I hope your next year is filled with great books, fantastic cakes, and even more love.
Hahaha. I don’t think I’ve ever been called sexy before. Hahaha. But thank you. I got a simnel cake yesterday so the world is doing me well!
🥚Love me a really long reading vlog. 🥚
Also, unless you've read a Du Maurier, and didn't put it in a vlog, I'm pretty sure the last one you read was Frenchman's Creek, in the vlog titled 'Books Set By The Sea... By The Sea'. From May of 2021. It's even in the thumbnail.
Wow. What a good memory you have. I haven’t read one since then so it’s been a while. I actually thought it was longer. Ha.

@@SavidgeReads really enjoyed the vlog Simon. I have ordered How to Fail from my library.
Simon, what is the name of the book you and your Mum were talking about in a past video, about Eyam during the Plague? I remember learning about it at primary school, and it’s always stuck with me. X
It’s Geraldine Brooks novel A Year of Wonder.
@@SavidgeReads Thank you so much X

Aah 😌 I just loved this vlog saved to enjoy with 🫖 and 🍰 also gave me some more ideas of books I want to read as you always do the never ending list thanks Simon 😆 📚 I do love the long vlogs feels more of an event and you have such interesting chat so thank you 🥚 🦢 🦢
Awww thank YOU for such a lovely comment. I’m thrilled to be an excuse for tea and cake. Ha.

A pleasure 🦤
I watched all 69 minutes. 🥚
I hope you enjoyed it!
@@SavidgeReads I did enjoy it. You put together a really nice blend of bookishness, shopping, and friends & family. I especially liked the wall of Beatles song titles, the hen do, and Chris singing Happy Birthday. Thank you, Simon.
