Without doubt, the Peugeot 205T16 is by far the greatest rally car ever. It won the WRC, Paris Dakar, Pikes Peak and rescued Peugeot Automobiles from the clutches of financial depression. Henri Toivonen (The one that died with Sergio Cresto in the Delta S4) actually had ANOTHER near death accident in wich he broke three vertebrae in his neck and ended up in a coma. This event happened in a Lancia 037 around 1 year before his death, this tells you how selfish Lancia actually was. Looking at how influential Lancia was, who is to say that the cause of the group B ban was out of fear of the negativity that the FIA would receive if they blamed Lancia for the group B deaths and lack of safety?

The Audi, no matter how much they modified it, trying to place more weight behind by moving the radiators to the rear, with the engine hanging from the front axle, it was still a "street car concept" (Gr. A) or what is the same as an Audi 80 Coupe Quattro with a bigger engine (and therefore more powerful and all of them surplus of power, +500 hp) but a very understeering car and therefore not as agile in cornering as the previous ones.

For example, FIAT withdrew its fast Lancia Stratos and entered the 131 Abarth, even though the Stratos was still fastest for years ahead. The fans by accident got the sport banned due to overcrowding on stages and people getting killed. The current breed of WRC are faster but that’s just progression in tech. We can get videos etc of Group B but back in 80s you would only have heard about how fast they were with no social media.

Tbh all Rally1 cars are basically the same, but the 205 T16 was the first AWD mid-engine rally car to exist. Imagine if antilag was a thing back then? Along with the mid-engine layout, the other reason why the B group cars would not use handbreak on hairpins it's because of the turbo lag
That sort of misses the point of why it was popular, though. They sounded like demons and they damn near were impossible to drive (think RS200) unless you knew what you were doing. It literally took balls of steel to drive them and whoever did, by their own admission, thanked God for even surviving those things. Nowadays things are better because of safety standards but... People are thrilled at amazing feats like undriveable cars being taken to their limits and then some.

The WRC spec cars were too good, they didn't like being thrown around like the group a cars and group 4 cars. Group b was good while it lasted but was self destructive, if it had gone on much longer the cars would have got better and less spectacular as a result. The best rally cars need the least driver input, but its not as impressive to watch. And people liked group a because you could go and buy an impreza, evo or cossie. Wrc spec cars killed wrc. Mcrae said in 2002 that he didn't think his style suited modern wrc cars, because he was an aggressive driver who liked to throw the car around, and group a, group 4 etc. Needed to be thrown around.

You should bring back a proper Rally cars, these current WRC granny hatchbacks are slow and boring. Ford Fiesta or Volkswagen Polo is a car for old lady and not for rally.
