The iconic Peugeot rally car from the Group B era of the 1980's made World Rally Championship winning drivers out of Timo Salonen in 1985 and Juha Kankkunen in 1986 and helped Peugeot win the FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers for the same two years. The WRC is the FIA World Rally Championship, a tough motorsport using rally cars on real roads around the world. Watch the best rally drivers battle on gravel and asphalt roads with mud, rain, dust, ice and heat! Watch high speed action as the rally drivers power slide and drift round narrow corners, go flat out over a big jump or through a watersplash, handbrake turn round a hairpin, survive a big moment, or have a massive crash! Rally requires maximum attack and careful tactics to become world rally champion.
Each rally has timed sections called special stages, on closed roads. Drivers complete these stages as quickly as possible. A co-driver reads pace notes that explain the hazards ahead. Rally drivers use the same rally car to travel to each stage on public roads, following normal traffic regulations. The crew which completes all the stages in the shortest time is the rally winner. Championship points are won using the same scoring system as Formula 1. The championship is administered by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), motorsport's world governing body.
Over 30 countries have hosted WRC rallies. Rally Monte Carlo, Rally Argentina, Rally Finland, Rally Portugal, Tour de Corse on Corsica, France, Rally Sardegna on Sardinia, Italy, Safari Rally in Kenya, Acropolis Rally in Greece, Rally New Zealand, Rally Australia, Rally Japan, Rally GB, Rally Catalunya, Rallye Deutschland, Rally Mexico and many more.
Some of the world's greatest drivers have won the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, like Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz, Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Petter Solberg, Ott Tänak. The list of world rally champions includes many Finnish rally drivers like Juha Kankkunen, Tommi Mäkinen, Ari Vatanen, Marcus Grönholm, Hannu Mikkola. French drivers have had success with Sébastien Ogier, and 9 times world champion Sébastien Loeb. Famous drivers from other motorsports have come to try rally driving like Ken Block from Rallycross, and Robert Kubica and Kimi Räikkönen from F1.
Car companies compete for the prestigious FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers awarded to the most successful WRC constructor. Winners include Citroen, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Peugeot. Ford have had success with the Ford Escort, Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta when the M-Sport team won in 2017.
The 1980's featured the iconic Group B rally cars like the Lancia 037 and Delta S4, Peugeot 205 T16, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200 and Audi Quattro.
Japan dominated the 1990s with the Mitsubishi Lancer, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Celica and Toyota Corolla. Toyota returned to the WRC in 2017 with the Toyota Yaris WRC, winning in 2018. The 2019 championship was won by Hyundai with the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. Find out about the latest winners and champions at www.wrc.com

Egal ob Gruppe B, Pikes Peak oder Rally Paris Dakar. Der Peugeot 205 T16 ist immer als Sieger hervorgegangen. Ich liebe Peugeot und den T16 😍

Without doubt, the Peugeot 205T16 is by far the greatest rally car ever. It won the WRC, Paris Dakar, Pikes Peak and rescued Peugeot Automobiles from the clutches of financial depression. The superb engineering spawned other future winners in the Peugeot stable like the 405T16, the Citroen rally raid, the Citroen Xara and the Peugeot 206T16 years later. Hail the Peugeot 205T16!!

@@mark12375 it's not about power, all 3 Lancia drivers that died during group b were caused by lack of safety and proper structure strenght on their cars. Henri Toivonen (The one that died with Sergio Cresto in the Delta S4) actually had ANOTHER near death accident in wich he broke three vertebrae in his neck and ended up in a coma. This event happened in a Lancia 037 around 1 year before his death, this tells you how selfish Lancia actually was.
Looking at how influential Lancia was, who is to say that the cause of the group B ban was out of fear of the negativity that the FIA would receive if they blamed Lancia for the group B deaths and lack of safety?

Along with Lancia Delta S4 and even Ford RS200 the best Gr. B. The three cars that best interpreted the Group B Regulations.
The Audi, no matter how much they modified it, trying to place more weight behind by moving the radiators to the rear, with the engine hanging from the front axle, it was still a "street car concept" (Gr. A) or what is the same as an Audi 80 Coupe Quattro with a bigger engine (and therefore more powerful and all of them surplus of power, +500 hp) but a very understeering car and therefore not as agile in cornering as the previous ones.

It literally took balls of steel to drive them and whoever did, by their own admission, thanked God for even surviving those things. Nowadays things are better because of safety standards but... The WRC spec cars were too good, they didn't like being thrown around like the group a cars and group 4 cars.
Group b was good while it lasted but was self destructive, if it had gone on much longer the cars would have got better and less spectacular as a result.
The best rally cars need the least driver input, but its not as impressive to watch.
And people liked group a because you could go and buy an impreza, evo or cossie.
