Why Throw the knife away in favour of a shitty wrist lock. That seems counter intuitive

James, it's a good question, really. This is a reversal demo which makes it more complicated but ignoring that for now. Our focus is to neutralize and disarm but not harm or kill so we don't try to use the knife back on the attacker. Sensei could have retained the knife but he discarded it for the demo and by the way retaining keeps the knife in play which is dangerous so throwing away may be safer for everyone. We use a standard and very effective common lock which you'll find in most arts. And, if the moral code of do no harm doesn't resonate, then consider that your defense could turn into manslaughter, attempted murder or worse pretty quickly. I appreciate the question and hopefully this response is something to consider.
