  • Heart Disease Reversal Diet - Did the Carnivore Diet Cause My Stroke?
On August 15, I had a stroke after having been on the Paleo, KETO and then the Carnivore diets. All of these diets are extremely high in animal products and saturated fats. Although after my stroke, I initially decided to remain on the carnivore diet, since that time I have studied the research extensively and made the personal decision to switch from the carnivore diet to a whole food plant based diet.
In this video I share information about why I am making the change and also information about a heart disease reversal course Alan and I will be taking very soon.
If you have any opinions about this, or anything you’d like to add, I hope you’ll share the information in the comments section below the video. That way we can help each other! XXOO Beth

I thought I saw Beth say in an earlier video that her stroke was caused by an unknown hole in her heart … not from her diet .
To each his own , I’m not carnivore but I eat meat and plenty of healthy fat and my HDL and trig ratio is now perfect when before when I was on a low fat , high plant diet with grilled chicken and brown rice etc it was terrible , and indicated I was not heart healthy .
It’s very confusing and all these people flip flopping on you tube makes it worse. Everybody has to decide for themselves , for me when I was technically doing a so called “ hearth healthy “ diet I was the sickest I have ever been . Now , I feel great and work out daily.
Maybe there is no set diet for every single person. Some people thrive on carnivore and some may thrive on low fat. People of all diets have heart attacks , vegans , whole plant based , carnivores etc , people with low cholesterol have as many heart attacks as with high cholesterol . Do what your body feels best on .

Carnivore did feel good I have to admit. Unfortunately, though it turns out it is not very good for one’s health. Eating meat and dairy causes a high saturated fat diet. I wish I had known that before I started the carnivore diet. I listen to influencers that seem to know what they were talking about. I found out later however that there are no studies that support carnivore as a heart disease reversal diet. Heart disease is the number one killer in America.

    • @lisd2999
      @lisd2999 6 месяцев назад +17

I can’t speak to just carnivore because I’ve never been strictly carnivore , but I am probably a meat heavy low carb .
Studies are so controversial because they are so often done with a bias from the start or backed by big food , or big Pharma etc . The vegan and plant based community is behind many as well so I take many of them with a grain of salt.
I don’t think any diet has to be for everyone , but it’s become a battle of the influencers on you tube.
What I learned for myself as someone who used to buy into the no red meat , low fat , brown rice , grilled chicken , fruits and veggies etc … was my blood work did not back up that it was heart healthy for me , the ratios that are most indicative of heart health were not good on that low fat diet , they were double what they should have been . I had bad IBS , GERD and felt awful . I began to do low carb and upped my sat fat and it all went away and my blood work became great . I don’t see how a diet that is so bad for you can make your body feel so good and get rid of so many health issues .
As I said above , people on all diets have strokes and heart attacks , carnivores aren’t immune and neither are plant based.
The WOE battles are exhausting , people wanting to blame this diet for this or that .
Basically if people cut out the junk they will be better off no matter what else they eat . People should eat what is working best for their body reflected in blood work and how they feel . I do still trust many of the people like Dr Berry who have many studies of his own about heart health and meat. I do love veggies and eat them as well. Glad you are doing so well .

Humans have evolved over 2 - 3 million years to hunt and eat meat. Our bodies are acclimated to it. We need protein and fat to survive. We are not evolved to eat plans. Our bodies have zero need for plants, carbs, or fiber. We MUST have protein and fat. The reason you think meat and fat are unhealthy is because scientists and media have been paid by corporate food interests to lie to us for the past 80 years or so for profit.

Thank you for sharing this information, Beth. Early last year I had a lumpectomy due to abnormal cells in one of my breasts. My situation caused me concern that I would have a repeat event. Like you, I threw myself into research which lead me to a WFPB diet, as well. Much of the early info I found was from the same sources you’ve named. I (along with my husband out of support) switched to a WFPB diet. Our cholesterol and blood pressure numbers have improved greatly. It’s an adjustment and learning curve for sure, but am so glad we switched to WFPB. So many great sources for recipes, it just takes an open mind to try new habits in the kitchen.

Even with the so called "healthy" carbs I'm concerned about weight gain and inflammation returning.
My PA is on keto and she didn't seem overly concerned.Wants to recheck my blood work in 6 mos.

I can relate! I suffered severe enough arthritis to necessity both hips replaced at 49 and 50 years…then in 2017 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thank goodness my Oncologist immediately recommended all sugars and carbs be removed from my diet due to their link with cancer. I began as Keto then morphed into Ketovore. I had an unexpected and WELCOME side effect: inflammation and miserable body aches and joint pain nearly immediately subsided. Getting out of bed in the morning is no longer a five minute process of trying to slowly straighten my back and shuffle out of my bedroom. The veggies I love so much, when I consume them, send me back into aches and pains and trigger an awful bout of diverticulitis. I miss my roasted Brussels and salads…but they make me miserable. I do eat avocados daily - and sometimes sugar not added pickle chips…but that is all. I feel as healthy as I did at 35 (I’m 58). I think each individual needs to follow what works best for THEM. I had been suspicious of all the meat because of the cholesterol…but my labs are always great!

Happy New Year Beth! I am very happy to hear you are on a heart-healthy diet! I went on Carnivore to just " test it out" and I had every bad reaction. I lost 6 pounds in 2 weeks but I got sick. Perhaps younger women can handle it but women our age have to be so careful about their kidneys, heart and other organ failure. I became very frightened on the carnivore diet after I became very light-headed and weak on one side of my body. It wasn't a stroke but I felt terrible...weak. My blood work came back very bad. I am turning 69 and from now on I won't play games with my health. I went on a heart-healthy diet before Christmas and my blood work is good and I feel so much better not being on a meat diet! I have self-control and I don't have to eat one type of food to lose weight... especially meat. I hope your videos on this subject helps many women....xxoo Have a great day! xo Susan & Dez PS: Vegetables I really feel keep cancer away.

Hey Beth! Your video is so courageous! I've been following you for years! Such a sweet , kind and well meaning person you are! I'm so sorry that you are struggling with bad information. I too, in the month of August 2023 had a health scare that I thought was a stroke. I spent 3 days in the hospital with multiple tests but after initial MRI's w/ & w/o contrast, carotid Doppler, echocardiogram, MRI of the spine, ECG x 2, and a follow- up MRI W & w/o contrast meeting with 2 neurologists, 2 cardiologists, and it turned out not to be a stroke at all. I did learn during all of those MRI's that I had an old right thalamic infarct from approximately 10 or so years ago ( a silent stroke). I'm 61 years old and I'm pretty good metabolic and vascular health. I've been on the Keto// Keto/ carnivore diet for approx. 5 years. I fast approximately 18 hours a day and have done so for the last 5 years, practice yoga, pilates, HIIT, and walk my dogs each night. Please keep close watch over your fasting insulin, A1C, lipids mostly your HDL to triglycerides ratio, NMR lipid particle size panel, high sensitivity C-Reactive Protein, homocysteine. Consider getting a CGM, continuous glucose monitor, so that you can learn which foods cause you insulin to spike throughout the day. Even if you just get one for a month it will give you great insight into what effects you individually from a metabolic standpoint. I have actual printed out studies and brought them to my cardiologist and neurologist so they can see with their own eyes saturated fat and cholesterol are not the enemy we once believed but rather that we are metabolically sick. Unfortunately, dr.s are so busy and overwhelmed and overworked in our current "sick care" system that they have very little time to learn of the studies showing the connection between diabetis/ prediabetic and so so many of the illness including cancers, stroke, heart disease, insulin resistance, and preventative medicine. They, for the past, in my experience, are working from what they were taught from studies that were sponsored by big pharma and big food so clearly these studies show bias findings. I have a list of MD.s that do have actual studies about the carnivore and Keto/carnivore diets and how they help the brain. Stroke/ heart disease, Alzheimers, are just some of the classic metabolic diseases that are addressed by Dr Ken Berry (he follows (he discusses studies frequently) yes but there are so many more experts in this field: Dr Chris Palmer (Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School), Dr Mark Hyman from the Cleveland Clinic (functional medicine), Dr Anthony Chaffee (neurosurgeon),
Dr Eric Westman (functional medicine/ an Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University, Dr. Pradip Jamnadas, MD, MBBS, FACC, FSCAI, FCCP, FACP The founder and Chief Medical Officer of Cardiovascular Interventions, Orlando FL., Dr. Rob Lustig (Bachelor’s in Science from MIT, a Doctorate in Medicine from Cornell University. Medical College,), Dr. Phillip Ovadia, a practicing heart surgeon, graduated from the accelerated Pre-Med/Med program at the Penn State & Jefferson Medical College & Cardiothoracic Surgery at Tufts- New England Medical School, Dr Bret Scher cardiologist graduated from MAYO CLINIC in 2005. He also is the host of Diet Doctor which is a great source of education, Dr Ford Brewer Founder of PrevMed Heart Attack & Stroke Prevention and formerly trained and later professor at Johns Hopkins. Neither Cholesterol nor are animal sourced healthy fats or plant based fats (other than highly processed seed oils) are not the driver of stroke and heart disease. I'd hate to see you, seeing what you have already been through, head down a path of extremes. I look forward to more and more beauty tips from such a lovely lady, inside and out!

I tried keto too, like five times. Finally went full carnivore, also One Meal A Day (OMAD) - and all calories consumed before noon, or earlier if possible. I figured out that I'm _SO_ insulin resistant and so forth that I had to get super strict. I'm dropping .75 - 1.5 lbs a day now, I feel great, and I don't plan to be this strict forever, but I've done everything except actual vegan (majorly unhealthy for humans) and never got past the initial 15 lbs of water weight loss. I'm down 25 lbs in 27 days and expect that within the next week or so my weight loss number will be larger than my days on the diet number.
If the plant-based doesn't work for you, try what I'm doing for a month: literally "BBB&E." I've tailored the amounts of each to fit my caloric and macro needs. My one deviation is a protein shake (no milk) with it, so I have protein grams equal to my ideal body weight in pounds. And after 4 weeks of basically those for items for my meal, I'm going nuts tomorrow: A 10-oz chicken breast and half of a double batch (24) of egg salad I made with avocado to take the place of most of the mayo. It will be lower fat but I won't even need the shake for protein. Slight carnivore cheat, still WAY below the 20g of carbs keto allows, rewards my last boring 4 weeks and I'll be back to it the day after.
I've come to this realization: you will have to put up with some discomfort and boredom to reshape your body. It didn't get out of hand overnight - and it does *not* want to do anything but get fat. What I discovered was that even 20g carbs was still enough for my body to be able to avoid changing back from obese to properly healthy, like I was a decade ago. Oh yeah, the same food gets boring, but "food as a treat" probably ought to be just that - a treat, at least while you're performing major renovation and repair.

God bless you for all that you share with us here on your channel. You were doing everything your thought was healthy/right, and still had a stroke. As upsetting as that is, it's important for all of us to know. My instincts tell me that a protein-only diet isn't the way to go. First, I'd miss the color on my plate and my tastebuds, but more importantly, 'everything in moderation' seems to always hold true, especially when it comes to our way of eating. I've done significant studying on healthy lifestyles, longevity, etc, and I would caution you to not go too far on the plant-based/low fat approach either. There are two risks with that approach: 1. The body needs the full range of amino acids, and plants-only don't provide all 9 essential amino acids; 2. The body needs cholesterol, especially the brain. It is critical to many functions, especially in older adults. Moderation is the answer - some meat, lots of veggies, and healthy fats, lots of exercise, manage your stress and find joy in every moment you can. Best of luck on your health journey!

Especially anyone over 55 on a veg/vegan diet is at risk - our bodies' ability to absorb protein is diminished significantly, which impacts our muscles, joints, skin, hair, etc. It always amazes me how truly wise people from 'back in the day' were - eating iwell-balanced meals n moderation, taking walks after meals, the list goes on - and no Google, no YT. How did they know??? By listening to their bodies, it seems.@@shirlebryant9427

I understand how much you were affected by your stroke, but you seem to be jumping to a lot of unwarranted conclusions, as are some of the "experts" you're relying on. Look up videos with Sally Norton, and you’ll never eat another vegetable again. Fruits, I believe are healthy with lots of nutrition, and not nearly as many plant defenses like oxalates and lectins, etc. I was constantly in and out of the hospital with kidney stones when I was a vegetarian, and then a vegan. it was directly caused by the high amounts of spinach and kale and my joints were hurting so bad I could barely walk not to mention I was obese. Once I stopped eating plants and went carnivore I lost almost 70 pounds and was able to get off all my medication, and that’s because I stopped eating the foods that were causing my body to be inflamed and the plant food in my opinion is so bad for the human digestive system.

I noticed many people writing that they felt great, but not one of them mentioned food that could help prevent clogged arteries, cancer, a stroke, etc. Just because people feel great doesn't mean the inside of your body is doing well. Vegetables fight against cancers and help prevent strokes. Sugar and processed food also kills.

I will say that I do still eat seafood about once per week or so (usually a healthy cut of fish) and my body seems to respond really well to eating this way. I think you should be on the diet that makes you feel your best, regardless of what other people say about it. But I also think you should know that it's impossible that a diet you were on for a couple of years, let alone a few months, causes a stroke. None of us are genetically identical, of course, so you should adapt your diet according to how you feel on it. Seafood seems to be the healthiest type of food there is, save for some heavy metal risk in certain types of it. It can also provide the zinc that you won't get on a pure vegan diet.

Whole Food Plant Based means no animal products at all. The whole food part is eliminating or using very little processed foods such as oil. You get fats from the whole food such nuts and avocados and not oil which is taken out of a plant. I learned you can water sauté and oil isn’t necessary as I always thought it was. It’s a great way to eat once you get a bit of education on how to prepare food in a different manner than you likely grew up with. It took some time to find my way but I’m so glad I did.

@@gretaeberhardt541 Thanks for yr reply. I was wondering why they do not use the term vegetarian then. How do you get enough protein on this? I used to be a low fat eater, back in the days, no oils or butter in pan and ate mostly greens and rarely meat, but sometimes fish. I wasn't well though, underweight and a hurting body. Now I am on low carb, with more fats, and some things improved (the underweight and not being totally dry in skin) but now instead lower stamina from the lack of carbs.. I guess we have to find our ways of what works for ourselves. I personally have come to the conclusion cutting out something totally isn't the most optimal way (at least on me)but moderation and common sense. We do need fats (the brain) and yes coming from greens and nuts is a really good thing, but the amount needed, can it be covered only from those sources? Anyway, Thanks again for yr reply.🌸

Hi Beth. In a previous video you said the doctors found a “hole” in your heart that likely contributed to the stroke. The birth defect is either a patent ductus or septal defect. This is a known higher risk for stroke, though usually unknown until the stroke occurs. My friend had the same presentation as you did, was diagnosed with adult PDA and will be on anticoagulants for life. Your choice of diet is your own, but my opinion is the defect had a greater role than diet.

Beth, thank you so much for addressing this topic. I've had books by Dr. Dean Ornish for many years. I bought his books for my Mom, who had a history of heart issues. with her first heart attack and bypass in 1991. I tried to nudge her away from a meat based diet to plant based, but she was stubborn, Back in 2014, my Mother had open heart surgery and I took her copy Dr. Ornish's book 'Reversing Heart Disease" to the hospital, and told her I wish she would have actually read it! Her cardiologist came into her hospital room and saw the book laying on the table and said to us " this is very good". Going plant based is not only healthier physically, but ethically for the sake of cruelty - horrid conditions of that animals suffer before ending up on a dinner plate. It often takes something dramatic in our lives to make a change. My cholesterol (as well as inflammatory markers) had gotten so high on a high saturated fat, low carb keto way of eating, my doctor was extremely alarmed and warned me where I was heading...and it wasn't good. After slowly making small changes in my food choices, nothing changed dramatically until I went whole food plant based oil free and my cholesterol went down close to 100 points. My doctor is no longer worried and my digestion and gut is so much better as well. I love Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn who is highly regarded in the field. I also enjoy watching his wife and daughters cooking videos as well as Chef AJ and Plantiful Kiki. We are all different and have different genetics but this has worked for me. I so much appreciate your video. You have helped tremendously.

It is important to know who or what group FUNDS a research study, which can make a difference on the outcome, IMO. Your comments don't convince me that carnivore way of eating causes heart disease or stroke, but I will gladly listen to all that you present and I will do my best to keep an open mind. Yes, please share your comments after the upcoming course/program. You are always encouraging and I wish you much success on your new plan.

I definitely believe that is what happened to her. She has the look that they all have who got it. The propaganda and the brainwashing though has been immense so she likely will believe it’s carnivore even though prior to the technology of refrigeration humans a predominantly meat. They hunted and ate meat and sometimes went days without being able to eat and in cooler climates where vegetables were not available people ate meat and look how healthy our ancestors were eating bacon and eggs and milk fresh off the farm. Prior to the food pyramid being created and the falsity associated with it, there was almost 0 obesity prior to the pyramid. Yet look at the surge since the food pyramid was implemented. Look how obesity crept in five years after the first food pyramid. There is a huge paper trail of proof to support all of this. It is not the meat, but rather the high consumption of sugar and cookies and ice cream and soda drinks and high carbohydrates found in fruit juices and chips like Doritos and pastas and let’s not forget alcohol consumption that are creating these issues, not the meat.

Well, I'm glad you're finally listening to science and not pseudo influencers on youtube! When you first had your stroke, I told you in the comments section about how bad that diet was but you wouldn't listen. Also, you said that doctors told you your stroke was the result of the hours of traveling you had done at that time and you were not wearing compression socks and got a blood clot. You said they told you it traveled up through your body, though a hole in your heart and then went up to your brain. You also said the carnivore diet had nothing to do with your stroke. Do you remember saying that in your video after your stroke? I do. I think you even said how important it is to wear compression socks when traveling over a certain amount of hours and gave links to some compression socks you recommended. I've followed Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. Ornish for decades. You might want to follow Dr. Esselstyn's wife and daughter, who have a whole food plant based channel called "Plant Based With Jane Esselstyn and Ann Esselstyn". I'm also a fan of "Heavenly Fan" youtube channel, who is a Keto/low carb Vegan with really good recipes.

Good luck with your diet changes. Everyone is so bio-individual that one size definitely does not fit all. For me, I tend to shy away from the extreme ends of the scale (strictly carnivore or strictly vegan), but I do try to eat plant forward, minimizing processed foods (there are plenty of vegan foods that are unhealthy because they are also processed). The reason I still eat some meat (primarily low fat chicken, turkey, and seafood) is bc I cannot get enough protein eating only plants. While it's possible for some people to do so, for me, it is not. The sheer volume of plant food that I would need to consume to get adequate protein is simply too much for me, so I only eat enough meat to fill the protein gaps. Pls add 'protein needs for menopausal women' to your list of things to research so you don't end up trading one problem for another down the line. All the best.

    • @FiftyPlusBeauty
      @FiftyPlusBeauty  6 месяцев назад +2

Hi Barbara. Thank you for your comment and I totally agree with your thinking you need a great deal of protein as I felt that way too for pretty much my whole life. I was a bit confused by that belief due to Colin Caldwell’s excellent research that a higher protein diet actually increases the rates for cancer. I am actually listening to a great audiobook called Proteinahaulic by Dr Garth Davis he discusses the evidence that shows Americans eat way too much protein. He believes the most we women need is what the FDA guidelines are at 46 g of protein for women. He even believes that is a bit on the high side. I will be studying that issue more and presenting a video about it as soon as I get everything straight.

High LDL is oftentimes genetic. Diet and exercise will not fix this-only statins, PCSK9 inhibitors and other cholesterol lowering drugs will get LDL to safe numbers (lower than 40 in most cases). LDL over 100, which is considered normal, causes ASCVD.

Lectins present in plants can also be a contributing factor as they agglutinate red blood cells. Which Eat Right 4 Your Type covers.
Many raw vegans or even vegans and those following carnivore in general don't understand we have to eat to our biochemical individuality, and launch into it head first thinking everything will be fine just because they saw someone else on the internet doing it and was fine. Then yes, problems like these can and will still develop.

I'm really glad you are changing your diet, for your sake. My friend and I both did keto together using organic foods. After over a year I began to feel my body telling me something was very wrong (feeling of impending doom, tingling in the arms when I laid down, etc.). I did not want to go off of keto for fear of gaining weight but I finally decided to listen to my body. The symptoms immediately went away so I thought it might be a fluke. I immediately tried to go back on keto three different times _but each time_ my body told me the same thing, 'you will die' (me specifically). Finally, I really listened and stopped.
Like you, I did more research. I found that many of the you-tube keto doctors are taking certain studies out of context (I found this out by actually going and reading some of the studies they had referenced in context). I looked at studies and found pretty consistently that they show over and over that the less animal products one consumes the less overall disease and all-cause mortality. I tried sharing this information with my friend but she would not even look at the studies. Keto _can_ become like a cult-mindset. I was suprised that she would not even look at the studies. We had done keto together for over a year (maybe 15 months) when I stopped. She continued... _and died a few years later._ She passed away last year on February 1, 2023 and I miss her so much. She was a beautiful human being, inside and out. She was only 49. She wasn't even overweight...I think she started out around 122 and maintained at about 115 at 5 ft 4 for those wondering. She was the picture of health. She drank a high quality (expensive) bone broth daily by Jordan Ruben/Dr. Axe. She followed Dr. Eric Berg here on you-tube and also did intermittent fasting (followed Jason Fung for that). Again, she was a stickler about being organic and grass-fed (whether meat or butter). She was not a heavy eater. I add these details just in case anyone is wondering about whether or not organic had a part. She walked pretty regularly but did not do stressful work outs. She wound up getting cancer, TWO different kinds, both in the breast area. I had tried showing her the 'China Study' results around 2017 or 2018 but she would not even look/listen... _which was not like her._ Again, keto/carnivore can become such a mindset...like a cult.
For anyone reading, please understand I am not saying a keto diet can't be good in certain situations or for a limited time. I *am* saying that a _high _*_animal_*_ protein/fat diet long-term, _that ALSO eliminates cancer fighting fruits and vegetables_ is a recipe for early death. That kind of diet (animal keto/carnivore) is *high* in cancer causing food while ALSO reducing/eliminating cancer *fighting* fruits and vegetables. I miss my friend every day. I'm so upset by all of this.
Beth, I'm glad to see that you are listening to a great heart doctor. Dr. Garth Davis is another good doctor in a clinical setting who speaks about this topic. Dr. Michael Gregor is good too (going over all the nutritional studies) as is Diabetes Dr. Neal Bernard and of course Dr. John McDougall. May God bless you in your health journey. All things are possible through Him!

Unfortunately, the Mediterranean diet while better than the standard American diet does not show heart disease reversal. That’s what I am going for. I do agree that people take their diets personally, and each one can seem like a cult, but after the research I have been doing, there is truly only one diet that has been proven and repeated studies to reduce and brewers, heart, disease, and that is Whole Foods plant-based. it is very confusing and I do understand that. I didn’t realize that until I had such a negative event which caused me to really look deeper into things.
