Unpopular opinion: There is no „waste“ of paint when you’re doing art. Even pieces you are unhappy with are teaching you what mistakes you did or what you didn’t like so you can avoid it in the future.
I love this because I'm someone who has picked art up and then put it down over and over again. I cannot imagine someone doing this for a living and then suddenly getting blocked. All that matters is that you like doing it and I feel like she finally just said it. Like you said PERIODT!!
unpopular opinion: using reference photos is not making the art "less yours" or it's not "cheating". you don't have less talent if you use reference photos
When I'm not drawing, I like to study things I like so when I get back to it, I've got a lot of material. Once did this for three months and it was awesome.
I share your opinions (though I do love my Pigma Microns 😉). 😊 Regarding Copics, I have some from a subscription box and they're nice but I don't think I'd pay that much for something that's not even light fast. I LOVE Rothko! 😍 I don't necessarily consume his art on a deep level, I just find the shapes and colours very soothing. 😊 Talking about artist statements made me smile because once I had to make three pieces with the theme of emotions. I was feeling bored and mischievous at this point so I just threw stuff together, including one particularly kitsch piece with glitter, pink acrylic paint and plastic doll faces glued to it. It was hilarious to watch my tutors agonise about the deeper meaning of this piece and have a whole class discussion on it! 😂
Unpopular opinion: Watercolour is hella underrated. I think it looks stunning, but more importantly, it’s so hard to control pigment, blending and where the paint actually goes. Credit to watercolour artists out there.
Adding the absurd price of the paper and the low quality of most (even expensive ones) of watercolour brands. I used to love using such medium... sadly , not anymore :(
Unpopular opinion: Don’t compare more abstract art with realistic art, both of them have different standards and goals. It’s rude and illogical to compare two art pieces in terms of how good it is when the application of creativity is different.
Unpopular opinion: You have no obligation to get "better" at art to keep doing it. Most artists want to get better, and people naturally improve at things they do over and over again, but if you're happy drawing stick figures and never getting beyond that - that's okay too.
Dude, I really needed to hear this. I kinda had a lot of trouble with people telling me that drawing anything was pointless if I wasn't constantly improving. One of my supposed friends actually lectured me because at the time I drew really stupid shit post comics that were supposed to look poorly done, and apparently my work wasn't improving enough for his liking. To be fair, he also insulted a lot of the small little characters I would spend a lot of time on after looking through my notebook without my permission. It actually took me a really long time to get remotely comfortable with drawing anything after how critical he had been. He always had an opinion, and he probably would've really hated some of the opinions in this video. Thankfully, I've been doing a lot better creatively since he stopped being in my life. In fact, I haven't been able to draw for a bit due to the lack of resources for my preferred medium (digital) but the moment I can get back to it I've got tons of ideas. I know I went off a bit, and sorry for venting. I really needed to hear that though, so thank you

im glad there r so many artists here who dont want to make it their career, cuz im always paranoid that literally every artist only wants an art career. i DO want (n srsly need) to get mine off the ground, always trying to figure it out n working towards it (literally always), n im lots of times tweaked asf abt if every other artist is being fake or competitive or antagonistic, etc. etc. but being reminded that lots of ppl actually dont wanna make careers outta their art, is nice to see
Plus the fact that a person may have other talents and interests as well. And what you wish to pursue may change with age. People are complex and sometimes taking something you love and trying to turn it into a career can actually take the joy out of it because of the pressure. Rather than relieve stress it becomes a cause of stress. On top of that a person's artwork is a very personal. To have people judge a piece of you is a lot to handle when something you've poured your heart and soul into. So I totally understand why some people choose not to go to art school to become an artist.

She asked me if I was thinking of perusing a career as an artist. I answered her “ no, not really I just do it for fun it relaxes me” she answered me. “ God I hate when people that know how to draw don’t want to become artist, so wasteful!” I still get those comments but eeeh I still love it just for relaxation
Art school can be really expensive and not super easy to get into. It's also not the only way to continue a passion for art. You can use it in so many different ways throughout your life, and the skills you picked up along the way can be really helpful.
Unpopular opinion: In one of my art classes we're focusing on recreating famous painters art, such as Pablo Picasso. We're being graded on how well we replicate his style. Personally, I think that while it's good to learn about different painters techniques and it can be very helpful in understanding different processes we shouldn't just be duplicating their styles. We should instead be learning from their techniques to help us create our own art with our own unique styles, instead of just copying what someone already did.
I totally agree! I had an art teacher in highschool who actually wanted us to do it your way and it was so much better even though I probably didn't appreciate it at the time, I do now.
It is also setting students up to fail. Sorry, but why do art teqchers think that it is in any way fun or motivating to produce copies of different artists over and over again and then be compared to them? Like, what do you think you're getting from comparing a high school student to a frickin world famous artist? This isn't motivating, it's depressing. Nobody would expect a toddler to run at an Iron Man marathon.

I've said that a lot when I hear someone bitching that art school is a throw away degree and a waste of money. Everything you touch has an artist somewhere in the conception. (People, animals, plants.. things that occur in nature excluded of course) All art is not someone standing at an easel, painting a bowl of fruit.
This is that postmodern "everything is art" thing that grinds my gears. Law of averages. If everything is art, nothing is art. Without standard, most concepts cease to exist. The same with objective beauty, and so on. It's also an insult to people that work their ass off to hone their craft, only to see someone sell a painting called "red square" that is a square painted red for $500,000
In my art class, I had to watch a documentary and it said realism isn’t just the place or object you’re trying to recreate, but rather it’s how the artist sees it. A landscape for example, when you’re drawing or painting it, you have to pay attention to detail and make decisions based on what your own eyes see, what details you include or exclude. Especially if you take your own reference photo or drawing from life, you’re making it from your own perspective, from the angle you saw it in, and paying attention to composition

Exactly. If photographs can be art, photorealistic works can be art. Imagination comes into play in the choice of the subject and composition and whatever one is reproducing in a photorealistic manner.
I kinda stopped doing any realism because my teacher said I need to do other things since realism is "boring" but I enjoyed it but can't do it anymore since I quit :(. I could only do semi realism since I was still inexperienced but still
@@unknownhuman5873 oh man that sucks that a teacher said that. Teachers should never tell students to not do smth. This is actually pretty common and in one of chloe rose art’s videos she was reacting to confessions and one of them said that an art teacher would give the student an A to never do anything artistic again. I think a good way to do things other than realism is to include realism as part of a piece instead of the whole thing so you can still use realism but in a more creative way (as part of a collage for example).

Unpopular opinion: digital are IS real art. However, it IS still a tool just like a ruler or a collection of high quality paints. Meaning, if you have the means to make digital art you're at an advantage in terms of being able to make the best version of your art

I feel like writing is it’s own art form. Through writing we create worlds, characters, and emotions that is also done through today’s modern art. Previously some art was about realism and nowadays it’s going more towards symbolism and emotions while writing has been doing since that since beginning or at least parts of it like poetry. I feel that art and writing can relate on many aspects. Realism can be seen in writing through journalistic articles which is about telling the truth or what’s in front of you like a still life. For example modernist art could be like poetry being an expression of love. As a writer and artist I find so many connections between the two mediums that I work with. It really is thrilling to combine two things that I love very dearly. Whether it be drawing a character for a story for something I’m going to write on the page so I can visually see it or creating the cover of a story I write, I find a deep connection between them.
"Some artists hold their art so near to their heart, they don't want to share it with the world"- I think I feel the same way about my poems and snippets of songs? They are just so personal that I feel they would be someone else's if I post them online/put them out. I have things I want to share, but some are just very close to the heart to share, it almost feels like a breach of privacy
YES! I am a self-trained composer (15-years) and I still have immense aniexty showing people ANYTHING. I have snippets and peices I have been working on for YEARS, and once in awhile, they reach a place I'm satisfied with, but it is very rare. I work as an operational engineer, but when I come home, I play my piano and screw around on Musescore, Famitracker, and *ahem* Anvil Studio 2012 (I'll never give you up my love), and that makes me happy. When I share stuff, people love it, but I'm not looking for adoration.
Idk why I used to think that I'm the only one with this issue lol I feel so bad for not posting art... I've been told that getting art followers helps with my art career but tbh it's all very exhausting to keep up. And things are getting worse since I've started to realise that drawing now has become more of a chore than a hobby I love and a way to escape my problems, sitting down at my desk intensifies my back pains which is just the opposite of escapism lol and I feel way less active with my creativity nowadays :,P

As an artist who primarily draws realistic and photorealistic it's honestly just more fun to me. I enjoy it more. I like drawing things because they are pretty, I'm not drawing it for the meaning (which idk why people find crazy). I can enjoy less realistic takes and abstract art however I enjoy realistic more
I have to agree with this. I work at an elementary school (K-4) and some of these kids little art projects are really good. Not only what they're trying to interpret, but the combination of mediums.
See I usually agree with this but I always think of that one youtuber who did claymations of his sick murder and s-assault fantasies and I guess it's art but I'm definitely scarred from it lol.
My controversial art opinion is that tracing has its benefits. Early on it taught me to get my lines right and perfect shapes by seeing where I was off and what needed improvement.
@UlookBeautifultoday. It can be for some, And a disadvantage for others. I stopped tracing as a kid because i realized that i couldn't draw on my own anymore, Now i can stare at something and basically trace it with my mind using shades and shapes and that's a way to learn as well, It really depends on the person. Something more helpful than tracing is grids because it teaches your brain how to split up your subject. Hope this was helpful 🤔
So much yes! When I was first trying to really get my skills down I traced a lot of things to get an understanding of how the image should be drawn. I got so much crap for it, but now I've developed my own style and understanding of it all. So I'm happy I traced things.

I'm a digital artist that always gets told that what I do isn't real art and it was made by the computer and I did "nothing" so I am glad you believe art comes in many different ways

I'm in the UK and my BFF at uni was bribed by her parents not to pursue a degree in art. They wanted her to be an accountant, so she managed to strike a balance with them by doing something she had a passion for, which was environmental science. She enjoyed it and learnt a lot but when it came down to it she just didn't have the style of learning for science, and barely scraped a pass. And the whole thing also apparently killed her joy for art too, so it was doubly sad. I think in her mind it had translated as people not thinking she was good enough to be an artist, when in reality I think her parents just wanted her to do something with anbit more stability to it. So, what did she do after uni? She became an accountant 🤦♀️. I will say that I don't think you need to study art at university to become an artist. But if that is where your passion lies then don't let people dissuade you from it. I really wish my friend had insisted on studying art but compromised in a different way by instead taking a minor in business studies. I think that would have been a great way to combine both things and understand how to make art marketable, and of course would have provided a fall back plan if being an artist didn't work out.

@@sluggysloth4810 I know how to use a dictionary. Genre is not the end-all-be-all of "creative". You're disregarding creatively-constructed compositions and such that happen to be done in a photorealistic style. And genres like paleoart that require some creative interpretation to re-create what things *might* have looked like, whether the style of a particular piece is photorealistic or not.
About 2 years ago I went to an art gallery in Vienna just to kill time and decided to rent an audio guide. It immediately transported me into a different dimension and I was shocked by realising how much interesting the art is. After that I would just go to art galleries, rent audio guides and I need to covid to fk off so I can start visiting galleries agaiiin
Hey! Google Arts & Cultures has some audio guides. They’re really good with amazing quality and they show the pieces. That’s if you’re okay with the virtual aspect.
If you look at faces really look! Nobody has identical eyes, in color or shape or even placement in their skull! I just think you should take some time and LOOK at your subjects. Just a thought.
regarding modern art: in my psychology class we were talking about this and when people say “i could’ve done that”. my professor said “but you DIDNT” take that guy who duct taped a banana to the wall-anyone could’ve done that, but no one actually DID and that’s what makes it creative.
Exactly!! The "but you didn't" reason just isn't valid. Also, I do think that some modern art I've seen takes skills and techniques, bust honestly, the banana duct tape thing is a joke. Absolutely trash.
*Unpopular opinion* colour pencils are underrated. Like when people think about an artist, they think a person with a paint brush and a palette. And that is ignorant. Period.
I think coloured pencil art is gaining a lot more traction in the past few years and I hope the trend continues. It is a completely valid medium, just like alcohol markers.
That's the reason I switched to watercolor 😂 I don't have the patience for colour pencils. I do use them for sharing though as you get a wee bit more control
Heh yeah, agreed. Most of my digital art is on less than ten layers, unless I'm trying to make it so that I can make one character disappear and another appear without spamming copy-paste, in which case I group them into folders. Either way, I usually never have more than fifteen layers open at once.
There's people that don't consider photo-realism art? I mean, it's literally you using art techniques to create something. I genuinely do not understand the modern fixation on everything being as unique as possible and not taking influence on anything. It's not a bad thing to take inspiration from something or someone. Photo-realism takes a lot of skill and patience.
As a photorealism artist, I very much don't have the creative mind that some people have, the ability to express emotions through art and see and create deep symbolism. I only have the techniques. I think it's just a testament to how broad and individual the art world is. Everyone explores art in their own way using their own talents and I have appreciation for all of them!

yes!!! I love painting on paper way more than any kind of fabric or board but ppl are always so nasty about it. like they think the painting itself is like,,,,,less of a painting just because it's on paper

unpopular opinion: cartoony drawing IS ART. nudity IS ART. as someone who draws cartoony and draws nudity, its hard to express my creativity to other people because they dont like seeing boobs or a cartoony character flashing their boobs, i understand not everyone likes or wants to see that but it makes ME happy to create that type of art and its no different from a naked painting of a women.
I've always drawn in a cartoony style, The cartoons i've grown up with have influenced my life and I love adding pieces of my favorite shows/games into my art, and even sometimes character design, I love character design a LO T
My unpopulair opinion is that colored pencils are underrated. I don't see a lot of "populair" art youtubers and influencers use them. Mainly they use digital art or paint or markers. I would love to see more colored pencils artist like me. I mainly use them for my drawings and it can be a bit difficult but so much fun.
I use colour pencils! :D I think less people use coloured pencils because it's time consuming and you can't get bold, heavy, even colours within a few minutes, unlike markers. I think people just wanna make art faster, especially for influencers who take up so much time just by recording and editing videos. Rae, Kirsty Partridge, and Heather Rooney use pencils though, and they're big influencers :D
Photo realism art is the artist flexing at how amazing they are at the medium they use. Hilariously enough, I had an art teacher that was more like realism is the ONLY art. Let's just say that year of high school was a struggle.
@UCDOq6De32359F8Gy4kxsl5A I agree and the fun things is i like making realistic color pencil drawings myself (though i would call those artistic realism as i play around with things like fx saturation and and shadow to much to call it true 100% photo realism) but i find making cartonish loking art far more meaningfull and far less limiting also i'm kind of stuck with color and graphite pencils for realism as it the only meadiums i'm good enough at to get away with doing realism in. There as for non realistic art i can get away with most mediums yeah i'm still far better at some mediums than others but at least i'm not as limited in that regard.

I'm here for the tea, lol. I hear, "You could be making so much money!" And I get it, it's a talent. But I rarely do commissions because, for me, my art is my happy place. I don't want it to feel like work. I don't want to dread doing it. The process of creating is what I LOVE. Me not profiting financially from my creativity is NOT a waste of talent.
Not to mention that composition is a big part of photo realism. It's one thing to draw a photo realistic ball, another to arrange it in such a way that people actually wanna look at it. That takes skill and creativity.
I always do photo realism and sometimes I thought to myself “Am I making art if I just copy and draw a photo that I see?” I think about this a lot and doubt myself if I’m really an artist. All this thinking led me to actually take a long break in making art but I reflected and thought that photo realism is still art for me at least.
The same happened with me. And social media does not help. Photorealism and realism are are. You still need the skills to draw like that and it takes time and years of practice.
I think anyone who tries to tell you that photorealism isn't art are just jealous of your talent, because it is one of the hardest art styles I can think of. The great thing about photorealism though is that it isn't just copying a photo, because once you can do that then you can: take that photo and use the painting process to highlight aspects in it, or exclude other aspects from the picture, you can change the emphasis or feel/mood of the picture, take two photos and merge them together. Or, you can even create a photorealist painting that didn't even originate from a photo...but it looks like it did. It's _so_ much more than just copying. I live in awe of people who can create photorealsistic art.

I dont agree, most beginners start out bad. Its not a bad thing, they will evolve but its useless to deny it. Having no undersanding of what you want to do isnt an artstyle. Someone who cooks for the first time will make bad food too its normal
It's funny hearing someone say that about photorealism because growing up I was always told that if my art wasn't as close to that as possible then it wasn't art. I tended to draw cartoons most of the time. Hearing that over and over really killed my love of making art for a little over ten years after being told I wasn't good enough. Starting to dip my toes back in a re-learn everything again and it's been a fun challenge so far!
This video reminded me of my old painting professor in college. He could tell when students were trying to get an easy grade by claiming they wanted to do abstract paintings. He would only agree to it if they brought him a 10 page paper on the history and meaning of abstract art as a way of proving that they understood how much work actually goes into something like that. I think only one person actually did the research and write the paper.

Unpopular art opinion: art is not just hanging out in a vacuum, the art or general content that you consume will influence you in some way-for better and absolutely for *worse* whether you want to believe it or not.
I'm disabled so I draw as a way to kill time. Like my beading, crocheting and embroidery. I actually started getting back into drawing so I could sketch out an embroidery design if I wanted.
Unpopular opinion -- there's no such thing as "talent." There's study, and practice, and work, and practice, and observation, and practice, and focus, and practice, and learning, and practice, and there's also practice and practice and practice. That "amazingly talented" twenty-year-old has been drawing since she was old enough to clutch a crayon in her chubby little toddler hand, and has been painting since her parents got her a set of cheap watercolors when she was seven or eight. She's one of the ones who never stopped drawing (everyone draws as a very young child; most of us stop drawing on our own -- when it's not for a class assignment or something -- by the time we're eight or nine) and has spent the last eighteen of her twenty years drawing and painting, looking at pro art and trying to copy it, drawing manga and My Little Ponies and her dog, looking at art books in the library and watching art videos on RUclips, and trying to do what they taught her, so now at eighteen, yeah, she's better than any other thousand kids her age. That's not "talent." That's *work,* and calling it talent -- as if it's something that was handed to her for free that she didn't have to work for -- is an insult.
I have to disagree mainly due to the fact that some people ARE more talented than others. It's not a knock on anybody it's just reality. To someone who may be complimenting your art by saying "you're so talented" it just means that you have a lot of skill even if you worked hard to get it and it wasn't entirely "natural" (even though I believe working for it is just as natural as anything else) it still is very good. Especially to someone who is not an artist complimenting your work. They may not know that it took a lot of work or they may not know the type of work that went into it and that's not a bad thing they just haven't experienced making art beforelik you have and "talent" isn't supposed to be an insult. That's just how they see it because to them, a non artist who can barely draw a stick figure, it IS talent. And the fact that they're taking the time to even compliment you at all should be appreciated. I feel more insulted when I show someone an artwork and they go "cool" and that's it. Like the response feels like a slap in the face for the amount of time and hard work it took to complete and I think "you're so talented" is a much better compliment.

I completely agree with you on the photorealism! It may not be as "creative" as some other forms of art; but it requires a very keen eye and a type of control and discipline that few "creative" artists could pull off.
Truly Unpopular opinions: 1 Those on Tik Tok who draw over a Disney character and turn them into some celeb are the most boring artist. They are just drawing over something someone else made. 2 Resin art is not for everyone. Lemme explain, resin is not only super toxic but is also usually wasteful. Resin never decomposes so it stays around forever. I fell like people only started using resin because it’s popular know, it kinda of sucks to know down the line there’s just going to be a bunch of useless resin stuff in landfill. If you’re going to use resin at least be somewhat original. 3 There is also far too much guilt tripping, you shouldn’t be manipulating people to feeling bad just to like your art.
Listen the very fact that people look at Modern Art and have that reaction of 'anger' or 'this is too easy anyone could have done it' always causes me to bring up two points: 1. You had an emotional reaction to the piece. You looked at it and it made you feel something, and then you thought about it for longer than you would normally. THAT'S WHAT ART DOES. and 2. 'anyone could have done it' does not invalidate the fact that at the time, *no one else was doing it* in that way. Being the first person to do something that 'anyone can do' still means you've done something revolutionary. You can look at a picture of Rothko's works and maybe not understand what he was doing, but if you look at one in person, the reds are often so vivid they leave an impression on your eyes when you close them. He has somehow painted blacks that seem to *glow*. The use of color never would have occurred to my mind, and that's something to be respected even if people don't personally enjoy it. (Also, I respect the hell out of paint pourers too. It's not a "craft" - nor is "craft" a word that should be used to negatively comment on women's art - and the fact that it's primarily popularized by women rings me suspect as to why people are so negative about it.)
The modern art as she is refering to in the video feels more related to abstract (which I am fine with, I like it) but what gets my bubbles boiling is when its just a white canvasas with a black dot in the middle or ive even seen just a plain white canvas before, stuff like that, yall say the anger you feel looking at it is what makes it art, but when i look at the canvas itself, i feel nothing, along with most people with this opinion, its when you adjust the focus to the thousands of dollars that makes me upset, yall say things like "well you didn't make it" or "well it has a story behind it" well one, i didnt make it because its a stupid idea, and two, if you so much as loved the story behind it, just grab a canvas slap white paint on it then put a small line of black paint and hang it up while thinking of the story for 10 bucks max instead of a million

Also, the pieces that go for that high belong to artists who have worked for decades to build their name and craft. I feel like people are angry, not because they saw the artwork, but because it is being regarded in an amazing light or hanging up in a gallery space when something else could have been placed there. The brush strokes, the colour, and the skill did not cause the reaction. The reaction was caused by thinking it was a waste of time. I love abstract art and think it takes skill to do, but if it's as simple as a blank canvas or some random shapes with no colour theory then like I'm also like "this means nothing and i can't believe they put this up instead of something else that took more skill" Most non-artists are going to think like that. It's okay if you or the artist likes it, but most people are not going to like it.

Absolutely agree on everything mentioned here. My unpopular art opinion is that the Mona Lisa is overrated. And I'm not saying that it's a bad painting AT ALL. I just think there are so many more paintings out there that evoke deeper emotions and /or were more impressive and aesthetically pleasing that don't get immediate recognition like the Mona Lisa does.

On Modern Art: I once went to an art museum that had a genuine Pollux and a display of local Native artists, one who did a Pollux style set, and you could really see the difference between the master and the amateur when you moved between rooms.

Yes!!! I grew up wanting to pursue art until I made a last minute decision to go into science. I have absolutely no regrets about it. After finishing my degree and when coronavirus hit, I spent a lot of time painting and doing commissions to pass time. However I found trying to make money off artwork really sucked the joy out of it for me. I am really glad I decided not to pursue art as my form of income. I will be starting a PhD this year, and I am so happy art will always be my outlet for when I need it. It does bother me when people say that I'm "wasting my talent", but everyone makes art for different reasons and that's fine with me.
I think that when someone looks at a realistic drawing they are very wowed and they realise how much work want into it BUT when they see a cartoon style there not as emprest in it because it looks easy and they don't realise that was default too I HATE THAT

I'm so happy you talked about the not wanting to pursue an artist career, I have had some members of my family telling me that my drawings and paintings are a waste of time and money since I do not sell them, It hurts to hear that when you paint cause is something you enjoy and is not for monetary reasons.

Unpopular Opinion: Watercolor pencils are better then Watercolor tins+ I think so because you can get more shading- Tracing is learning something Now I’m not saying that you should sell the art you’re tracing, but I’m saying tracing is helpful. Sometimes you need to trace to make more sense of the object you are trying to draw.
As someone who has lost their muse long ago, art is something special and anything that take creativity is art in my book. My middle child is an artist, and I have been behind her 100%. I do not want her to loose her muse like I did because of negative nannies.
I find it sometimes works better due to the heat and oil on the skin. So it depends what Im doing. Plus why waste paper when I can just wash my hands if its no difference.

There is no „waste“ of paint when you’re doing art.

Talking about artist statements made me smile because once I had to make three pieces with the theme of emotions. I was feeling bored and mischievous at this point so I just threw stuff together, including one particularly kitsch piece with glitter, pink acrylic paint and plastic doll faces glued to it. It was hilarious to watch my tutors agonise about the deeper meaning of this piece and have a whole class discussion on it! 😂

Dude, I really needed to hear this. I kinda had a lot of trouble with people telling me that drawing anything was pointless if I wasn't constantly improving. One of my supposed friends actually lectured me because at the time I drew really stupid shit post comics that were supposed to look poorly done, and apparently my work wasn't improving enough for his liking. To be fair, he also insulted a lot of the small little characters I would spend a lot of time on after looking through my notebook without my permission. It actually took me a really long time to get remotely comfortable with drawing anything after how critical he had been. He always had an opinion, and he probably would've really hated some of the opinions in this video. Thankfully, I've been doing a lot better creatively since he stopped being in my life. In fact, I haven't been able to draw for a bit due to the lack of resources for my preferred medium (digital) but the moment I can get back to it I've got tons of ideas. I know I went off a bit, and sorry for venting. I really needed to hear that though, so thank you

Plus the fact that a person may have other talents and interests as well. And what you wish to pursue may change with age. People are complex and sometimes taking something you love and trying to turn it into a career can actually take the joy out of it because of the pressure. Rather than relieve stress it becomes a cause of stress. On top of that a person's artwork is a very personal. To have people judge a piece of you is a lot to handle when something you've poured your heart and soul into. So I totally understand why some people choose not to go to art school to become an artist.

She asked me if I was thinking of perusing a career as an artist. I answered her “ no, not really I just do it for fun it relaxes me” she answered me. “ God I hate when people that know how to draw don’t want to become artist, so wasteful!” I still get those comments but eeeh I still love it just for relaxation
Art school can be really expensive and not super easy to get into. It's also not the only way to continue a passion for art. You can use it in so many different ways throughout your life, and the skills you picked up along the way can be really helpful.
Unpopular opinion: In one of my art classes we're focusing on recreating famous painters art, such as Pablo Picasso. We're being graded on how well we replicate his style. Personally, I think that while it's good to learn about different painters techniques and it can be very helpful in understanding different processes we shouldn't just be duplicating their styles. We should instead be learning from their techniques to help us create our own art with our own unique styles, instead of just copying what someone already did.

I totally agree! I had an art teacher in highschool who actually wanted us to do it your way and it was so much better even though I probably didn't appreciate it at the time, I do now.

Sorry, but why do art teqchers think that it is in any way fun or motivating to produce copies of different artists over and over again and then be compared to them? Like, what do you think you're getting from comparing a high school student to a frickin world famous artist? This isn't motivating, it's depressing. I've said that a lot when I hear someone bitching that art school is a throw away degree and a waste of money. Everything you touch has an artist somewhere in the conception. (People, animals, plants.. things that occur in nature excluded of course) All art is not someone standing at an easel, painting a bowl of fruit.

In my art class, I had to watch a documentary and it said realism isn’t just the place or object you’re trying to recreate, but rather it’s how the artist sees it. A landscape for example, when you’re drawing or painting it, you have to pay attention to detail and make decisions based on what your own eyes see, what details you include or exclude. Especially if you take your own reference photo or drawing from life, you’re making it from your own perspective, from the angle you saw it in, and paying attention to composition

Exactly. If photographs can be art, photorealistic works can be art. Imagination comes into play in the choice of the subject and composition and whatever one is reproducing in a photorealistic manner.
You could also draw things that aren’t real in a realistic way to create really interesting and beautiful artworks
I kinda stopped doing any realism because my teacher said I need to do other things since realism is "boring" but I enjoyed it but can't do it anymore since I quit :(. I could only do semi realism since I was still inexperienced but still
@@unknownhuman5873 oh man that sucks that a teacher said that. Teachers should never tell students to not do smth. This is actually pretty common and in one of chloe rose art’s videos she was reacting to confessions and one of them said that an art teacher would give the student an A to never do anything artistic again. I think a good way to do things other than realism is to include realism as part of a piece instead of the whole thing so you can still use realism but in a more creative way (as part of a collage for example).

Unpopular opinion: digital are IS real art. However, it IS still a tool just like a ruler or a collection of high quality paints. Meaning, if you have the means to make digital art you're at an advantage in terms of being able to make the best version of your art

I feel like writing is it’s own art form. Through writing we create worlds, characters, and emotions that is also done through today’s modern art. Previously some art was about realism and nowadays it’s going more towards symbolism and emotions while writing has been doing since that since beginning or at least parts of it like poetry. I feel that art and writing can relate on many aspects. Realism can be seen in writing through journalistic articles which is about telling the truth or what’s in front of you like a still life. For example modernist art could be like poetry being an expression of love. As a writer and artist I find so many connections between the two mediums that I work with. It really is thrilling to combine two things that I love very dearly. Whether it be drawing a character for a story for something I’m going to write on the page so I can visually see it or creating the cover of a story I write,
I find a deep connection between them.
"Some artists hold their art so near to their heart, they don't want to share it with the world"- I think I feel the same way about my poems and snippets of songs? They are just so personal that I feel they would be someone else's if I post them online/put them out. I have things I want to share, but some are just very close to the heart to share, it almost feels like a breach of privacy
YES! I am a self-trained composer (15-years) and I still have immense aniexty showing people ANYTHING. I have snippets and peices I have been working on for YEARS, and once in awhile, they reach a place I'm satisfied with, but it is very rare.
I work as an operational engineer, but when I come home, I play my piano and screw around on Musescore, Famitracker, and *ahem* Anvil Studio 2012 (I'll never give you up my love), and that makes me happy.
When I share stuff, people love it, but I'm not looking for adoration.

My controversial art opinion is that tracing has its benefits. Early on it taught me to get my lines right and perfect shapes by seeing where I was off and what needed improvement.
@UlookBeautifultoday. It can be for some, And a disadvantage for others. I stopped tracing as a kid because i realized that i couldn't draw on my own anymore, Now i can stare at something and basically trace it with my mind using shades and shapes and that's a way to learn as well, It really depends on the person. Something more helpful than tracing is grids because it teaches your brain how to split up your subject. Hope this was helpful 🤔
Agreed and many of the masters used projection to get their proportions right, it is basically tracing.
So much yes! When I was first trying to really get my skills down I traced a lot of things to get an understanding of how the image should be drawn. I got so much crap for it, but now I've developed my own style and understanding of it all. So I'm happy I traced things.

I'm in the UK and my BFF at uni was bribed by her parents not to pursue a degree in art. They wanted her to be an accountant, so she managed to strike a balance with them by doing something she had a passion for, which was environmental science. She enjoyed it and learnt a lot but when it came down to it she just didn't have the style of learning for science, and barely scraped a pass. And the whole thing also apparently killed her joy for art too, so it was doubly sad. I think in her mind it had translated as people not thinking she was good enough to be an artist, when in reality I think her parents just wanted her to do something with anbit more stability to it. So, what did she do after uni? She became an accountant 🤦♀️.
I will say that I don't think you need to study art at university to become an artist. But if that is where your passion lies then don't let people dissuade you from it. I really wish my friend had insisted on studying art but compromised in a different way by instead taking a minor in business studies. I think that would have been a great way to combine both things and understand how to make art marketable, and of course would have provided a fall back plan if being an artist didn't work out.

Genre is not the end-all-be-all of "creative". You're disregarding creatively-constructed compositions and such that happen to be done in a photorealistic style. And genres like paleoart that require some creative interpretation to re-create what things *might* have looked like, whether the style of a particular piece is photorealistic or not.

About 2 years ago I went to an art gallery in Vienna just to kill time and decided to rent an audio guide. It immediately transported me into a different dimension and I was shocked by realising how much interesting the art is.
After that I would just go to art galleries, rent audio guides and I need to covid to fk off so I can start visiting galleries agaiiin

If you look at faces really look! Nobody has identical eyes, in color or shape or even placement in their skull! I just think you should take some time and LOOK at your subjects. Just a thought.

regarding modern art: in my psychology class we were talking about this and when people say “i could’ve done that”. my professor said “but you DIDNT” take that guy who duct taped a banana to the wall-anyone could’ve done that, but no one actually DID and that’s what makes it creative.
Exactly!! The "but you didn't" reason just isn't valid. Also, I do think that some modern art I've seen takes skills and techniques, bust honestly, the banana duct tape thing is a joke. Absolutely trash.

Overly expensive art supplies can feel scary to use, So I started to use less expensive ones
I always start off with cheap supplies that way I can practice and not worry about it.
*Unpopular opinion* colour pencils are underrated. Like when people think about an artist, they think a person with a paint brush and a palette. And that is ignorant. Period.
And colored pencils take the longest. You can drawings that look like paintings or even photographs but colored pencils are the slowest medium ever..
I think coloured pencil art is gaining a lot more traction in the past few years and I hope the trend continues. It is a completely valid medium, just like alcohol markers.
It's not ignorant. People who paint are artists too. It's okay to imagine a type of artist when you think of the word artist.
That's the reason I switched to watercolor 😂 I don't have the patience for colour pencils. I do use them for sharing though as you get a wee bit more control

Heh yeah, agreed. Most of my digital art is on less than ten layers, unless I'm trying to make it so that I can make one character disappear and another appear without spamming copy-paste, in which case I group them into folders. Either way, I usually never have more than fifteen layers open at once.

There's people that don't consider photo-realism art? I mean, it's literally you using art techniques to create something. I genuinely do not understand the modern fixation on everything being as unique as possible and not taking influence on anything. It's not a bad thing to take inspiration from something or someone. Photo-realism takes a lot of skill and patience.
As a photorealism artist, I very much don't have the creative mind that some people have, the ability to express emotions through art and see and create deep symbolism. I only have the techniques. I think it's just a testament to how broad and individual the art world is. Everyone explores art in their own way using their own talents and I have appreciation for all of them!

unpopular opinion: cartoony drawing IS ART. nudity IS ART. as someone who draws cartoony and draws nudity, its hard to express my creativity to other people because they dont like seeing boobs or a cartoony character flashing their boobs, i understand not everyone likes or wants to see that but it makes ME happy to create that type of art and its no different from a naked painting of a women.

My unpopulair opinion is that colored pencils are underrated. I don't see a lot of "populair" art youtubers and influencers use them. Mainly they use digital art or paint or markers. I would love to see more colored pencils artist like me. I mainly use them for my drawings and it can be a bit difficult but so much fun.

I use colour pencils! :D I think less people use coloured pencils because it's time consuming and you can't get bold, heavy, even colours within a few minutes, unlike markers. I think people just wanna make art faster, especially for influencers who take up so much time just by recording and editing videos. Rae, Kirsty Partridge, and Heather Rooney use pencils though, and they're big influencers :D

Hilariously enough, I had an art teacher that was more like realism is the ONLY art. Let's just say that year of high school was a struggle.

There as for non realistic art i can get away with most mediums yeah i'm still far better at some mediums than others but at least i'm not as limited in that regard.

Not to mention that composition is a big part of photo realism. It's one thing to draw a photo realistic ball, another to arrange it in such a way that people actually wanna look at it. That takes skill and creativity.

I always do photo realism and sometimes I thought to myself “Am I making art if I just copy and draw a photo that I see?” I think about this a lot and doubt myself if I’m really an artist. All this thinking led me to actually take a long break in making art but I reflected and thought that photo realism is still art for me at least.
The same happened with me. And social media does not help. Photorealism and realism are are. You still need the skills to draw like that and it takes time and years of practice.
I think anyone who tries to tell you that photorealism isn't art are just jealous of your talent, because it is one of the hardest art styles I can think of. The great thing about photorealism though is that it isn't just copying a photo, because once you can do that then you can: take that photo and use the painting process to highlight aspects in it, or exclude other aspects from the picture, you can change the emphasis or feel/mood of the picture, take two photos and merge them together. Or, you can even create a photorealist painting that didn't even originate from a photo...but it looks like it did. It's _so_ much more than just copying. I live in awe of people who can create photorealsistic art.

It's funny hearing someone say that about photorealism because growing up I was always told that if my art wasn't as close to that as possible then it wasn't art. I tended to draw cartoons most of the time. Hearing that over and over really killed my love of making art for a little over ten years after being told I wasn't good enough.
Starting to dip my toes back in a re-learn everything again and it's been a fun challenge so far!
This video reminded me of my old painting professor in college. He could tell when students were trying to get an easy grade by claiming they wanted to do abstract paintings. He would only agree to it if they brought him a 10 page paper on the history and meaning of abstract art as a way of proving that they understood how much work actually goes into something like that. I think only one person actually did the research and write the paper.

"Modern art takes a lot of skill" as someone who tried (and failed) to make a piece of modern art I have to agree
I'm disabled so I draw as a way to kill time. Like my beading, crocheting and embroidery. I actually started getting back into drawing so I could sketch out an embroidery design if I wanted.
Unpopular opinion -- there's no such thing as "talent." There's study, and practice, and work, and practice, and observation, and practice, and focus, and practice, and learning, and practice, and there's also practice and practice and practice. That "amazingly talented" twenty-year-old has been drawing since she was old enough to clutch a crayon in her chubby little toddler hand, and has been painting since her parents got her a set of cheap watercolors when she was seven or eight. She's one of the ones who never stopped drawing (everyone draws as a very young child; most of us stop drawing on our own -- when it's not for a class assignment or something -- by the time we're eight or nine) and has spent the last eighteen of her twenty years drawing and painting, looking at pro art and trying to copy it, drawing manga and My Little Ponies and her dog, looking at art books in the library and watching art videos on RUclips, and trying to do what they taught her, so now at eighteen, yeah, she's better than any other thousand kids her age. That's not "talent." That's *work,* and calling it talent -- as if it's something that was handed to her for free that she didn't have to work for -- is an insult.

I have to disagree mainly due to the fact that some people ARE more talented than others. It's not a knock on anybody it's just reality. To someone who may be complimenting your art by saying "you're so talented" it just means that you have a lot of skill even if you worked hard to get it and it wasn't entirely "natural" (even though I believe working for it is just as natural as anything else) it still is very good. Especially to someone who is not an artist complimenting your work. They may not know that it took a lot of work or they may not know the type of work that went into it and that's not a bad thing they just haven't experienced making art beforelik you have and "talent" isn't supposed to be an insult. That's just how they see it because to them, a non artist who can barely draw a stick figure, it IS talent. And the fact that they're taking the time to even compliment you at all should be appreciated. I feel more insulted when I show someone an artwork and they go "cool" and that's it. Like the response feels like a slap in the face for the amount of time and hard work it took to complete and I think "you're so talented" is a much better compliment.

I completely agree with you on the photorealism! It may not be as "creative" as some other forms of art; but it requires a very keen eye and a type of control and discipline that few "creative" artists could pull off.
Truly Unpopular opinions: 1 Those on Tik Tok who draw over a Disney character and turn them into some celeb are the most boring artist. They are just drawing over something someone else made. 2 Resin art is not for everyone. Lemme explain, resin is not only super toxic but is also usually wasteful. Resin never decomposes so it stays around forever. I fell like people only started using resin because it’s popular know, it kinda of sucks to know down the line there’s just going to be a bunch of useless resin stuff in landfill. If you’re going to use resin at least be somewhat original. 3 There is also far too much guilt tripping, you shouldn’t be manipulating people to feeling bad just to like your art.
Listen the very fact that people look at Modern Art and have that reaction of 'anger' or 'this is too easy anyone could have done it' always causes me to bring up two points: 1. You had an emotional reaction to the piece. You looked at it and it made you feel something, and then you thought about it for longer than you would normally. THAT'S WHAT ART DOES. and 2. 'anyone could have done it' does not invalidate the fact that at the time, *no one else was doing it* in that way. Being the first person to do something that 'anyone can do' still means you've done something revolutionary. You can look at a picture of Rothko's works and maybe not understand what he was doing, but if you look at one in person, the reds are often so vivid they leave an impression on your eyes when you close them. He has somehow painted blacks that seem to *glow*. The use of color never would have occurred to my mind, and that's something to be respected even if people don't personally enjoy it. (Also, I respect the hell out of paint pourers too. It's not a "craft" - nor is "craft" a word that should be used to negatively comment on women's art - and the fact that it's primarily popularized by women rings me suspect as to why people are so negative about it.)
The modern art as she is refering to in the video feels more related to abstract (which I am fine with, I like it) but what gets my bubbles boiling is when its just a white canvasas with a black dot in the middle or ive even seen just a plain white canvas before, stuff like that, yall say the anger you feel looking at it is what makes it art, but when i look at the canvas itself, i feel nothing, along with most people with this opinion, its when you adjust the focus to the thousands of dollars that makes me upset, yall say things like "well you didn't make it" or "well it has a story behind it" well one, i didnt make it because its a stupid idea, and two, if you so much as loved the story behind it, just grab a canvas slap white paint on it then put a small line of black paint and hang it up while thinking of the story for 10 bucks max instead of a million

I feel like people are angry, not because they saw the artwork, but because it is being regarded in an amazing light or hanging up in a gallery space when something else could have been placed there. The brush strokes, the colour, and the skill did not cause the reaction. The reaction was caused by thinking it was a waste of time. I love abstract art and think it takes skill to do, but if it's as simple as a blank canvas or some random shapes with no colour theory then like I'm also like "this means nothing and i can't believe they put this up instead of something else that took more skill" Most non-artists are going to think like that. It's okay if you or the artist likes it, but most people are not going to like it.

Absolutely agree on everything mentioned here. My unpopular art opinion is that the Mona Lisa is overrated. And I'm not saying that it's a bad painting AT ALL. I just think there are so many more paintings out there that evoke deeper emotions and /or were more impressive and aesthetically pleasing that don't get immediate recognition like the Mona Lisa does.

On Modern Art: I once went to an art museum that had a genuine Pollux and a display of local Native artists, one who did a Pollux style set, and you could really see the difference between the master and the amateur when you moved between rooms.

Yes!!! I grew up wanting to pursue art until I made a last minute decision to go into science. I have absolutely no regrets about it. After finishing my degree and when coronavirus hit, I spent a lot of time painting and doing commissions to pass time. However I found trying to make money off artwork really sucked the joy out of it for me. I am really glad I decided not to pursue art as my form of income. I will be starting a PhD this year, and I am so happy art will always be my outlet for when I need it. It does bother me when people say that I'm "wasting my talent", but everyone makes art for different reasons and that's fine with me.
I think that when someone looks at a realistic drawing they are very wowed and they realise how much work want into it BUT when they see a cartoon style there not as emprest in it because it looks easy and they don't realise that was default too I HATE THAT

Tracing is learning something
Now I’m not saying that you should sell the art you’re tracing, but I’m saying tracing is helpful. Sometimes you need to trace to make more sense of the object you are trying to draw.
As someone who has lost their muse long ago, art is something special and anything that take creativity is art in my book. My middle child is an artist, and I have been behind her 100%. I do not want her to loose her muse like I did because of negative nannies.
