Lol imagine a kid 90 years ago coming to school with those exact crayons and not caring about it but in reality... Rae is treating it so gently lol. Great video!
That kid likely cared just as much.
That’s so crazy….it was in a kids backpack and they drew hearts and happy faces and now there dead

When the older generation tells us things were made to last they weren't even joking. I'm not even that old but I can see a difference in things from my childhood and now and that started when I was 20. I'm interested in seeing a comparison with 80's Crayola as well!
YES. Remember those cool stamping markers from Crayola? I have one from when I was five, it’s still works. It’s been around for 22 years and my kids use it. I bought them markers in the summer and some of them are starting to dry up already.
@@Justinadean1 Yup, I still had all my markers (including the stamping ones) since high school and they worked great still (over 20 years)! Including the Multicultural ones which were awesome lol
Not really an art thing, but...My microwave is older than I am (it's the one my parents used to have before they moved into a house with a built-in one) and it still works fine, as opposed to the newer ones that tend to burn popcorn. (in my experience)
Back then children had wooden toys, now they play with plastic stuff that will break after two or three years..
It makes them happy, so whatever, but still sad that the things today are made to break so people have to buy more and more
The thing is that the old version things are way better than the newest version
When 92 yo crayons crayons are better than modern crazy art crayons
It autocorrected crayola twice 😂
and a bit more dangerous
I was thinking the same thing-
Those crazy z art crayons be leaving chunks of wax on the paper

I had a 120 pack that was from the late 1990's (Circa 1998) from when I was about three, and it lasted me until about 2006. The pigment in the 1990's through about 2009, were just as good as the 1920's crayons, but ever since 2010, the crayons really dipped in quality.
Fun fact: Many people who touched that, are probably dead today.
Scary thought taylor.
Creepy

No what about if their 100 years old?
Ok but that new profile picture just SCREAMS Rae and I love it

I love the old art supplies series! Personally, I use Winsor and Newton tube watercolour paints from 50+ years ago! My grandparents owned an art and music store, and when my uncle bought it from them, he decided to focus on music alone. So many of the art supplies kind of just got left over. Being the family's most prolific (not best, just most obsessive lol) artist, I ended up with all of these amazing watercolours! I had given many of them to friends who are equally as into art as I am, but I always made sure to keep one tube of each colour. I still use them to this day, and there are still SO many of them!!
wow that is awesome! and so lucky!
Wow, over 90 years old!! I'm 82 and live in my van and use my crayons to help keep me sane. 😊 Fun stuff!!

I’m totally with you about old pigments. You don’t even have to go so far back to get the good stuff. I had a set of oil pastels from the 1980s and watercolours from the about the 30s, and when I had to replace them with a modern set I could only find horribly brash artificial pigments, even in branded sets. I stopped bothering with oils after that, no matter how skilled my blending I never could get the same rich colours. 😢
When Rae was about to announce the price, I guess $1. XD so close
Well done you, I thought they were going to be about 50 dollars! 😂

That is so crazy! I HAD to click on this. I got those crayons for Christmas when I was little! It was set up in a kit which was placed in an old tin Crayola lunchbox that probably had the same picture on it that was on the box of crayons. 🖍 It was one of my most memorable Christmas gifts. I’ve never seen any like it since.
Historically, the big deal about crayola crayons was that they were safe and non-toxic for kids, even back then. Just a lil history for you ❤️
I'm so sad how the quality of everything has just completely collapsed. Not just for for art supplies, but for everything. Back in the day people used to own fewer things that just were producded better. I feel like these days it's an evil marketing tactic that everything breaks so easily, you have to be soon replacing what you just bought. This goes especially for clothes.
Though I'm sure there are things that are also better in quality these days because technology has improved. I know this goes for a lot of oil paints in particular. But the mindset of people has changed for the worse.
I actually a video recently about how different clothes are now. Back then, there was like a popular style and you’d get a dress or suit in that style that would last a long long time. Now trends happen so quickly so clothing companies don’t feel the need to make as good of a quality because people will move on in a year or two.
Capitalism
True! That makes so much sense 😂
@@madiz4228 yes I heard that to! Sadly that’s how marketing is now. I hate how they upped the prices of food and clothes now days. Ppl start more thinking ab the money then for the poor.
The crayola back then is more different
I love how the color of the old crayons are more natural, so pretty!

‘Crayon collecting is VERY SERIOUS business’
Indeed, it is.
VERY serious
Highly serious
I understand lol, I am 13 and I love to bird watch (weird ik). Anyway you can make it super competitive, Iike walking up waist deep water upstream for 2 miles, walking thru a grassland field and going thru barbed wire fences in 100+ degree heat. Running outside in -10 degree weather in pj's to photograph a Common Redpoll. Having competitions, finding rare birds, big day birding. Like you can fricken make anything serious
Yup very serious (don’t put this responsibility into my hands..)
Back in the 70s, I got hold of my mom's vintage Sargent brand crayons, and they were so much better than the new Crayola's even back then. IDK when the formulas started changing, I assume probably around some war or another, but vintage crayons are where it's at - they're actually artist quality instead of children-please-don't-eat-this quality. History of crayons could be pretty interesting - were they originally for kids? who made them first?
Probably because most pigments back then are natural but the downside is these pigments are toxic lol probably why people where dropping like flies back then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Children please don’t eat this formula!! Lol…
It probably changed around ww2
7:15 A far more likely explanation than the pigments crystallizing over the years is that the pigments were never mixed well to begin with. I’d put my money on the yellow dots having been there from the start.
Woa nice and unique idea ❤️ these crayon 🖍️ are nice and over 91+ years woww I can't believe keep it up👍🏻nice

You are a master of anticipation! Geech, I’ve never been more excited to see a package open!😃😳😬😵💫Awesome vid!
Crayons made today are completely subpar. I am in my 60's, and decided it was time to get back into crayon work. YUCK! I bought new Crayolas, excited by the idea of going back to where I had begun my love of art. They were horrible. Nothing like I remembered. I thought maybe memory had played a trick, so I dug out my crayons from about thirty years ago, and tested them. Crayola should be ashamed of themselves. Nothing like the real deal. I have since been on a quest to find something similar to what crayons used to be. So far, oil pastels are the closest, but still not quite right. Glad I ran into your channel. You have some really interesting subject matter for artists. Keep up the good work!!

I was really surprised to see that the old crayon box had a Pink in it. Pink was an expensive pigment back in the day.
I have heard that claim about modern pigments, and I suspect it’s not true about either. By the time these old crayons were made, the synthetic dye industry had been around for decades, and so these crayons are basically guaranteed to be made with synthetic pigments, which are all cheap. A pink crayon simply has a smaller amount of magenta pigments and more white pigment (probably chalk). A red crayon will have far more pigment. (Magenta and yellow.)
