  • What happens when 25 teenagers enrol in Singapore’s first boarding campus exclusively for children from lower-income families? Will this social experiment prove how the poverty cycle can be broken?
    We chronicle the journeys of students and staff over a year as they navigate uncharted territories and find their paths. Rayyan struggles with his weight and self-esteem. His parents hope that the boarding campus, ‘=DREAMS’ can help him in ways they can’t. Early in the school year, Jovia is already crying herself to sleep after facing problems with her dormitory mates. But her mother is not ready for her to give up. Nick wins the hearts of his peers but has a run-in with adult volunteers. His behaviour tests the disciplinary approach of the staff.

    The lady and the dance choreographer might have the right intentions but just have no idea how ridiculous they sound:
    "You all have to dance because the sponsor will be there and he paid for everything" What are you trying to tell the kids? That some rich guy paid to save them from poverty and they should do something against their wishes just to show gratitude? That's demeaning. And I'm sure the generous donor wouldn't have explicitly stated that all kids must dance as a condition for his donation. She's probably just a staff trying to meet her KPI to please her boss or show face to the donor.
    "I initially didn't want to take the job until I heard your stories" Again, this is just making the kids feel like they have to please some guy with a savior mentality which they never asked for. It's emotional ransom at the subtle level.
    If you want to help, just help. Don't go in with some saviour mentality and feel like the kids owe you.

    • @mythmoon
      @mythmoon 3 месяца назад +32

      i feel that way too... it makes me feel like the kids are being objectified and pitied. they are not to be pitied!

    • @johnwig285
      @johnwig285 3 месяца назад +1

      Diam lah you not helping or volunteering, dont need to step emotional ransom all typical SJW bs. These kids literally need a tough real talk to know where their food etc comes from so that they'll wake up. They are a result of too much pampering by ppl like you.

    • @iamjaydennn
      @iamjaydennn 3 месяца назад +32

      The donor may stop funding the SSA if they find that their funds are not used effectively.
      However, the way the choreographer and the lady communicated with the kids will make them develop a inferiority complex, it's terrible. If they really want to convey funding issues to the kids, they should do it more tactfully. But then, as mentioned in the next episode, she's an external stakeholder.
      What's the point of having the boarding school if all the students developed low self-esteem and/or left the institution.

    Dare to Dream was recently featured in the CNA Insider "Kids in Rental Flats",
    And as the chairman Mr. Stanley puts it, a prototype towards the "gold standard" of what some people consider to be a controversial social experiment.
    But imagine this, the situations of where these kids come from, Jovia who comes from a single parent household, whose mother can't cope with her child's schooling expenses as she is saving up for a house.
    Or like Rayyan who has social awkwardness and self esteem issues. As much as their parents try to be supportive of him, they seem to brush off his concerns as "nervousness".
    It is not the kids fault to begin with when it is their living environment has made them this way,
    Therefore I see the remarkable approach taken by the team at Dare to Dream, especially Ms Kheng Leng & Mr Mohammad. They talked to the kids straight up in a neutral manner and without sugarcoating the facts. Most importantly, they LISTENED and don't brush them aside.

  • @johnwig285
    @johnwig285 3 месяца назад +36

    My only suggestion is that students from other socio-classes of the same age grp can be invited as volunteers for peer study, play sports together etc. It is like networking. You want to break the cycle, you have to make sure they also mingle with ppl of other social class. I was in the worst class because teachers taught it'll be better. But to me it reinforces our bad habits because we're stuck in a circle of similar ppl. Pros n cons.

      That's a good point you made but which parent can proudly say that they have never make mistake in parenting?
      I'm a dad with two kids. And I'm increasingly looking out for the way I interact with my P1 daughter. My girl and I have really close bond but i can sometimes find it hard to communicate to her when she's being what she is supposed to be at this age - a bit defiant, a bit stubborn, a bit seeking for independence from parents. We have to acknowledge that our kids might not listen to us even half of the time. And we often may make mistakes in our communication to them. Most importantly is how we repair the miscommunication /relationship.
      Hence if most, if not all, parents might make this mistake of miscommunicating to our children, shouldn't we not be exaggerating a mistake that this mom makes for you and I also do the same?

    I think Rayyan made a point about his Form teacher damaging his self-esteem. One major flaw about the education system in Singapore is that the teachers are not trained on how to handle the emotional aspects of teaching. Teaching is not just about what is in a textbook and getting good results. Something needs to be done.

    he doesn't feel ashamed, he's actually very empathetic and doesn't want to trouble people, a behavior that develops and enforced on himself subconsciously because he grew up poor, he doesn't know how to ask for help because he grew up seeing his most loved ones needing more help than him. He tries to be useful with his supreme lack of resources because that is poor mentality that they are stuck in. they don't know how to ask for help

    I lived in boarding school for four years and that has been dark for me. They care whether you break the curfew or forget to fingerprint every day before leaving the school but nobody cares how you feel or if you're lonely or developed depression because of the anxiety of not having private space or a trusted mature adult you can open up and solve the problems with. It's cruel to see children this young being lured away from home with a false impression that this is their new 'home' only to find out it's a cold place out there. And they blame themselves for not doing well or not feeling happy because it's supposed to work. It's sad to see adults putting their own ego or success at the price of bringing trauma to real human kids.
